Classic Lancer issue. Been living with this for over 7 years now, got used to switching hot to cold and back by reaching under and pushing it with my hand. Will try this though, thanks!
Same here! We took it to a mechanic and they said they don't make the parts so u can't fix it but manually change it so thats what we do...i wonder if i buy new parts itll work normal

Wow, thanks so much for this! This was the first thing I broke on my Lancer after I bought it with 168k miles. I broke the knob and never new how to fix it. Everything I've worn out on this little Lancer I've been able to fix myself, from brakes and oil changes to motor mounts, control arms, struts and the ignition switch. All done rather easily. These videos give the DIYer the confidence to dig in themselves. Dash panels are always a puzzle to me haha!
Just this morning my knob turned all the way from cold to hot with out the full feeling that some kind of flap fully switched over. Now my knob will turn from cold to hot but come back about 45 degrees of the way back toward cold leaving me with slightly warmed are. Everything I've looked into over the past hour has led me here and I think this should save me a ton of time and money. Thanks in advance. I'll certainly post back if the problem is fixed.
Thanks so so SOOO Much! I just used this video to repair my wifes Mitsubishi Lancer 2003. It took a couple tries, but then I remembered what you said about matching the "valley" of the small piece to the dimple on the gear. I am in debt to you and your crew.THANKS A BILLION TIMES!
OMG! WHAT A LIFE SAVER! switched to a double din radio and realized... I had no heat.. Tried everything to pull that wire back in, and this video showed me that I could just go underneath and pull it by hand using the gear! Now I have heat again.. Only been 3 days, haven't gone anywhere far... but it is winter time. THANKS A LOT! REALLY HELPFUL! 👍👍👍
Thank you for this video! The mechanic couldn’t figure out how to fix this issue...You saved me so much time and money!!! ❤️ I have actual climate control now.
this worked great!! just bought a lancer for my son got home and realised how stiff the temp knob was. found your video went to dealer they tried to sell me the whole kit with the door. I only bought the gear assembly and the cable. I could have gotten by with just the gears as my cable wasn't bent like yours was. thanks so much!!!
THANK YOU for the video and more importantly for taking a snap of the parts. I got mine, within 4 days, delivered to my door for 33 Cdn dollars total and from a Mitsubishi dealership! The fix is planned. Yay!!
Nice....I had the same problem with the rotation of the heat control. I saw this video a month ago and when I checked under the dash, it was all clear. I did order a new set of gears and just fix it :).... I am so happy, because I was so close to order a new heat control which is around a $200! And the problem would remain! Thanks for this video! Regards from Bulgaria.
thank you so much! i was having exact problem the cable was bending not allowing it to move to heat. Shops wanted me to replace entire climate head $$$ but thanks to this video i found a solution!
Thanks for the video; saved me lots of time and frustration with figuring it out on my own. Something to check out for anyone who does this: I bought a new cable and swapped it out like in the video. Afterwards I was able to manually bend the old cable end back into position. It looks brand new. I'm going to place it into my spares bin.
My Mode selector was also goofed. This video helped bring my MacGyver skills out and i was able to fix that, just by looking at which way the cable was pointing :-) Now I need to get these gears so i can fix my temperature selector too!
Was looking to fix a Lancer that has this problem. Read the horror stories about 1000 dollar plus repair bills. Going to try this and hope it's this simple.
nice solid fix man. Thanks for helping all evos. I did grease and lub job and fixed a lot of it but not as smooth as replacing them like you did. cheers
I recently ran into this problem and have discovered it is common on many Mitsubishi Automobiles. The cause of the problem has been assigned to a lack of a Cabin Filter letting dust and debris into the system, causing the blender door to get difficult to operate. Others have blamed the Shaft behind the Temp Control Knob being made of weak plastic material. These Automobiles are manufactured with the Blender Door Mechanism encased in a Plastic Housing. The HVAC System is mostly Plastic. Plastic Shrinks with age. The plastic housing of the Blender Door will bind it in just a few years of shrinkage. The Cable and Gear system used to move the Blender Door can no longer work properly because the Track it is in has shrunk with age, and the tremendous temperatures we know happen in the Dash area from Sunlight make sure this will happen. There is no fix for this other than replacing the entire HVAC Housing to relieve the clamping effect on the Blender Door. Not an economical solution to say the least. My solution is to attach a lever to the teardrop shaped gear on the side of the HVAC box. Pushing it Forward for Heat and Pulling it Back for Cold. The door is moved easily into any blend position by this method. Manufacturers take note, this is a design fault.
Thank so much for this video. I ordered the parts and I’m attempting to fix mine tomorrow. Your video gave me the confidence that I can do it by myself. Thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars. Update: Got it all together but it’s the round gear to the door blender causing the issue that won’t turn easy. It’s so hard to line up the notch too. Had it apart at least 9 times. I’m cut up bruised, bleeding and ready to sell this car lol. It just reached 110,000 miles for a 2004 Lancer. I can’t find any how to’s on the door blender gear for the climate control. $600 to $1000 if I have to take it in. I will never buy a Mitsubishi again after this. Sad because it’s been a good little sports car with turbo
@@sr2racing391As of now I’m using pliers to pull down the white gear under the dash for ac and a rubber mallet to pound the gear up for heat. I took it to a mechanic and they would have to order a blender door (hard to find that part) and it would cost 1400.00 usd for parts and labor. Blender door was around 800.00. Stupid way of making something. Lol. Frustrating as hell because the door is so hard to turn and you basically have to cut the white sealed box open to get at it. There has to be an easier way.
@@staciemonroe1101 I can still switch heat to cold. That one moves easy. I need to look at the doors inside directing where the air goes. Both knobs are broken and I need the cables. Hey man, this keeps popping up in my recommended so I thought I’d comment. This video helped me a few years back, great detail and narration. If you’re in WI, have you ever run road America? Running my evo there is on my bucket list.
Hello, glad it was helpful. I've been to Road America a few times. Beautiful place! I have no intention of driving my evo there though. I'm not much of a track day driver myself.
I have actually replaced the shaft. My sister roke hers and I was able to take the panel off and replace it. You will need to remove the control panel to make it easier for yourself. Make sure you disconnect all the wires shown in this video and also there are two more wire connections in the middle you need to disconnect. Once you take the panel out just look on the underside and you will see that the outside shaft connects to the a bigger know inside. You can pop it out with a screwdriver.
I've read that you can but a new shaft and swap it out, but I haven't done it myself. I would fix the gears eitherway and then try a new shaft/ knob depending on what is broken. Good luck!
Thanks for the video. So I bought the gears without knowing to buy the cable too. My old cable is kinked and I am going to order a new one but I noticed that the main issue I am having is the "blend door" as you called it in another comment is very stiff. that little gear is very hard to turn. Do you know how to remedy that or if it is difficult to do? (Side Note: after putting the new gears on I found that they seemed to work worse than the old ones when I moved them by hand. which is how I have had to switch from cold to hot for a while now. Anyone else notice that?) thanks again for the video.
I would take a look at the gears under the dash, turn the knob both ways and see if it moves. If it does move, you most likely just need your A/C recharged. If it doesn't move, try moving the gears by hand and see if that works.
If this doesn't fix your problem then you need to replace the HVAC mix door. To do this you have to drain the coolant, evacuate your AC lines with a certified mechanic, remove your dash, and remove your dash support bar. At that point you need to take out the white HVAC box, break off all the tabs on the bottom of it ( don't worry, mitsubishi supplies new screws to replace those tabs with their new hvac door kit), and remove the old door. It's a pain in the ass to do, but well worth it. I know this because I just did it.
I am having the same problem and I found this. www.justanswer.com/mitsubishi/7cusp-mitsubishi-lancer-fix-broken-heater-control-shaft.html. I am going to try this. Thanks for your comment.
hey man, great video, I learned a lot from it. I have a couple of questions though. Will that gear set lever work on a 2002 Mitsubishi lancer? The ones I have are the ones from the factory and I don't know if this part will work on my vehicle. The other one is, that one crank you pointed out with the thing sticking out, just by itself, without the parts that crank it from cold to hot gets kind of hard to turn once it gets around the middle. Now, the heater control wire that I have is crooked so I'm tracking it needs to be replaced. Any advise you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Great video, thanks. A question, I have the new gears and cable, but it is still hard to turn, I read that the damper needs to be changed also, seems like that requires the removal of the whole dash, can this be fixed without the whole thing removal? I really don't want to remove the dash because the damper failure. Thanks.

I have a 2007 Mitsubishi Colt (in Australia) and have the same problem where its permanently stuck on facing the driver and cannot be turned to anything else... do you know if its a more complex procedure with a later model car? I cannot seem to find much on later model cars / colts. cheers
Any advice I turned the knob from heat to cold for just a couple minutes and I don’t know if i did it too hard or what but I can’t get my hear working again when turning the knob back in the same direction it was heating up normal up until I messed with the knob I already did a heater core flush replaced cabin air filter changed thermostat and replaced and topped off radiator with the correct fluid but just recently very little too no heat ever since I turned it to AC. Part of the plastic bit broke off in the knob when trying to fix it. 04 Mitsubishi Lancer same dashboard
This video was a long time ago but I was just wondering if this car model automatically turns off the recirculation for the AC. Mine has to be pressed every time I start the car.
Hi I watched your video on how to change the nobs on your car. I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla and the air is stuck on the highest setting. I was wondering if you knew what it was called - i think it's just the wire that needs replaced, and I want to do it myself. I fixed it before but I rigged it, so I want to fix it properly. I also have a tedious time turning fro foot to defrost (that nob). i guess my question is, can you change the wires inside that are broken or do you have to change the entire unit with the knobs and everything? Any way you can help would be great!
Would this be the reason my heater doesn't work or do I have two problems? My knob is on the "heat" part for the ac but can't go lower, it used to be on the "cold" part but the guys changed it around when I got my car recalled for the airbags.
So my Evo Air Conditioning only works (And quite well) in Max AX. If I hit the A/C button it does not light up at all meaning the green light does not turn on when I hit the A/C Button. Now when I put it on MAX A/C it lights up and goes cold.Any help?
Hey bro, first of all thank you! My car (mitsubishi lancer 2010) have no such a heat lever. Its probably move by electronic, cus it have no mechanical wire going out from the ac control and when im move the heat/cold circle its making a sound of movement only when the power switch is on. Any suggestions where i can find the inner lever?
Man, do you have any idea how to clean/repair the A/C push button? Mine started to misbehaving and works only after I push it multiple times....kind of frustrating.
I bought the new updated gears and wire. Hooked everything up and its still really hard to turn. I greased all of the gears I even sprayed wd-40 its still very difficult. I looked up online it says to replace the heater blend door. Do u think I should? I have no idea how to even try there are no videos online.
I have this same exact problem with my 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. Is the procedure the same to fix it? I looked online for videos but only found this one. Thanks so much for posting
What about the little neck part that sticks out to connect the knob to. I broke that thing to turn the heat on one morning when it was cold. The knob was stuck. Is there a way to replace that part? Do you know what it's called?
@boostedfilmes my cable is completely destroyed and the clip to hold it in place by the gears is gone, I already found a cable and gears, any idea where I could buy a clip for it?
Make sure you don't turn the big knob the shaft connects to because then you are going to have to figure out what position it needs to be in for the correct heat setting.
i had my 8 broken into the other night and they destroyed my heating unit to get the stereo out so is it possible to change to the unit that comes in the MR model?
How do you remove the clips on the wire under the dash? They are super hard to get to for me and Im not tall by any means. They seem to not want to budge and I dont want to tear them out in fear of my new wires not being secure. Plus, thank you very much for this video. I have no idea how you managed to work under that dash without completely removing it! You are a champ
Its been a while since I've done this, but i think you need to use a small screw driver or a needle nose pliers to compress the clip and then it should pop out. Good luck!
At 4:28, you point (with a white dot) to a gear that turns or flips something inside the panel. That is the wear I feel the tension; when trying to flip over from AC to Heat (like easy to turn at first, but then hard to "flip over" to heat and vice versa. It does do to "flip" when I turn it with my hand (and some effort) but too hard for the poor knob and wire to do it. Any suggestions?

OI didn't have to buy anything either I just disconnect / remove those parts and. Rotated the blend door gear manually and walaah David Copperfield
Thank you for the informative video. Do you know where to buy just the heater shaft ?
I have this same exact problem with my 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. Is the procedure the same to fix it? I looked online for videos but only found this one. Thanks so much for posting
What about the little neck part that sticks out to connect the knob to. I broke that thing to turn the heat on one morning when it was cold. The knob was stuck. Is there a way to replace that part? Do you know what it's called?
I think its just called a shaft. I will have to refer you to this video for the fix: ruclips.net/video/d8jNWN6TRzE/видео.html
Boosted Films Thank you.
Sure thing, and good luck. That fix takes a bit more work.
What kind of grease do you recommend?
I did the same thing. Did you happen to find the part for it? I can't figure out what it is.
I just pulled the nob off and put it back on. One can spray a little WD40 . Then I turned the nob with pliers.
Do you know where I can get the 2 clips that hold the wire in place on the back of the controller? Thanks
Does the part 7801A110 fit with Mitsubishi Lancer 2002 ?
Nice style with a couple of jokes
@boostedfilmes my cable is completely destroyed and the clip to hold it in place by the gears is gone, I already found a cable and gears, any idea where I could buy a clip for it?
great video by the way where did you buy the gears?
Make sure you don't turn the big knob the shaft connects to because then you are going to have to figure out what position it needs to be in for the correct heat setting.
My knob also broke off, how can I get a new knob and shaft? is there a website?
i had my 8 broken into the other night and they destroyed my heating unit to get the stereo out so is it possible to change to the unit that comes in the MR model?
I have been searching for years on how to fix this! What are the part #'s and where did you buy them? Thanks!
thank you for this im hoping its the same thing for the 04 lancer. btw where did you buy the parts?
Need a kit to fix your controls? i have few extras -> www.ebay.com/itm/mitsubishi-lancer-Evo-Heater-Control-Fix-Kit/192936274352
Good luck!
Thank you very much, I'm going to try that. It's a shame that everything is plastic and tucked so deep
Will this work for a L300’s Van?
nice vid thanks!
