- In the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned, online privacy is on everyone's minds. But according to privacy experts, the entire way we think about and understand what 'privacy' actually means... is wrong.
In this new Think Again, NBC News Correspondent Andrew Stern dives deep into digital privacy - what it really means, how we got to this point, how it impacts every facet of our lives, and how little of it we actually have.

Security for online Banking services
"I don't have anything to hide, so there's nothing to worry about."
Heh. Wait until somebody hi-jacks your bank account.
so what is your solution? we shouldn't own a bank account because someone could do that? I assume you keep your money under your bed... what about your you tube account???
You want to use the internet and take advantage of it? well you have to let these company collect data so they can make a profit and keep all these great services efficient and relaible! and waht is wrong with getting targeted ads? it's actually a service for you.
@Zoom I understand it pretty good actually, definitely more than you paranoid individuals. I know the risks and if you don't want risks just don't use the internet. But don't expect that companies shouldn't profit from you in some ways, it is completely normal and natural. So instead of telling me that I don't understand put your money where your mouth is and delete your social media account or don't use internet, or maybe go use those trash search engines like duck something and those useless VPN services. Even better would you pay a monthly fee to use you tube or Google? Because if they can't track you and send you relevant ads they cannot run these platforms 🤷🏻♂️ as simple as that.
@@antoniodesimone4689 r/whoosh about every point made in this video lolll. Sheep.
These people dont know how the real world works and have never been hacked.
Thats security not privacy
Addresses and phone numbers should never be public from names online. Imagine any stranger that finds out your name , a cashier, a classmate, a bad date can find you.
any identification of yours is your private properties; they have no correct reason to request you to give your private property to them for regime they want
I feel like we are in a dystopian world
My friends think I am just being paranoid about this subject as I refuse to join any social media platform. You have expressed the same sentiment as I have and I was pleasantly warmed hearing someone with the same opinion.
I also think, if the information is mine to start with, if nothing can stop this, I should at least get a cut of the profits.
You're on a social media platform, right now. You signed up with your information on Google in order to make an account to watch RUclips.
@@andra5979 not really...
@@andra5979ok. who asked
I have blackout tape over my camera eye on my computer. Both to be seen and take pictures. Thus I keep getting a pop up screen asking me to speak/say specific words. I don't comply. I don't want my face, eye or voice print known. So, the sudden command to speak increases and sometimes my ability to get rid of this invasion is nearly impossible.....even to shut down my screen freezes for awhile. I think I am upsetting the computer system.
Lol i think your windows got a malware mate. I know microsoft is hungry for data but they dont act this erratic to get yours. Better get that checked
Get Linux Mint.
Ps disable speech services on your phone and turn off background data n background battery on it
Sorry to say that but if you actually want privacy you need to get out of Windows
get malwarebytes dawg
Being completely private and being online, you can only have one. That just how the internet works since day one.
Wait until you find out that most of your guys can instantly find your personal information within 5 to 10 minutes like your address and who you might be living with.
Very thought provoking. I really appreciate the distinction regarding privacy and having agency over what others know about you.
These issues have been known & talked about for a while now, obviously there is a disconnect for most people between individual consequences from their data being collected. Hopefully more content like this highlighting the real & potential risks of data harvesting will lead to more people giving this issue the serious attention it rates.
Is this modern time, I'm more scared of the use that private companies could do with my data than the government use.
Cleverly omiting the name of these "databrokers" and the one he requested a copy of his data from ...
Since the internet, there is no such thing as privacy anymore. 😪
That's not true. Use virtual machines for the fun of confusing the alphabet.
@@circleofsorrow4583 That's... Not the full answer. But yeah, the argument persists: it's still there, but you have to know how to protect it.
I just wish people would apologize for calling me paranoid for the last 2 decades...
@@circleofsorrow4583 And actual paid VPNs are good if not in the Five Eyes Countries. Getting off Facebook and Amazon helps too.

misleading title! There are many ways to have online privacy
This beast is out the box now, given no boundaries.
You mean ' out of the pit'
There is so much you can do but most people choose to be lazy
how do you get one of these reports?
It just goes to show this privacy issue is not just roe v wade, which is important but just tip of the iceberg! Crazy. I knew it.
There’s websites like data seal and one rep that provide services to remove your personal info online
No lie. No one respects boundaries these days.
Google says you don't own your location data, they do. They provided the infrastructure in order to track it so you don't get much choice in how it is used. The best proof of this is if you have a business it is listed by google all without your consent or input including your hours of operation which they know because of the data your phone sends them. You can go online and change the hours of operation manually which they take about a day to approve but the point is they allow this with very little information from you because they know exactly who put in the request just from it coming from a google phone. If you ask them they will tell you this very matter of factly.
Stealing illegal and private data from public individuals is a criminal act that majority of governments say is theirs but if it is theirs then they would obtain from their own mindset instead of stealing and selling someone's else mindset. Bottom Line!
There is no such concept as internet privacy. All internet communication is routinely monitored and can be viewed openly by any public body with the technology to do so. Usually local law enforcement. It is only protected on the stored servers not while being viewed or accessed
Not if it’s encrypted.
Gonna make me build sophisticated network with these modern times
Aaaaaand nothing about neoliberalism or late capitalism.
I would like to know how to legally request a copy of this data gathered and to which databrokers and how to ask for it.
So an antivirus and a vpn isnt the solution 😢
It's refreshing to see professor solov talk about this I thought I was going insane talking about this but not being able to articulate just like this. We don't ask why. We don't ask what you mean? We just make these "inferences"
Not true they just signed a bill 2022 for companies to sell your data. For 1, there were other alternative ways they could have watched what you were buying without looking at your data. Them buying and selling data was just an excuse to break the law. That's why they signed a bill to make it illegal and added it to the privacy protection act.
I'm quite shocked
I requested my file from the broker in the video, I’m still waiting on the request to be approved. Will be interesting to see what’s contained in it, it’s pretty scary how much information that they already knew about me for the identity verification request.
From this video???
@angryox3102 please give an update 🙏
this is why i dont use tech much and remove all the apps from my phone. i dont shop on line i dont use "social media" if i have to sign up or in like google or youtube they dont get my real name

Seems like Tom Cruise has a movie about this 😅.

Geolocation data is real even when you don’t have internet or phone service.
Nope....
@@NTKM-om9vn Fun fact! You can easily get your location triangulated with cellular towers, and now, with 5G out there, this method of triangulation is as effective as if you were to use Wi-Fi to locate a subject, which is pretty darn precise.
But on iPhone, apps need your permission to use your location.
Thank you, sir.
Does Requesting a Personal Information Report help?

There are ways, but it means not being connected! If no one has a connection then no one can see or think (if one cares) about one's opinion or knowledge.
Degoogle ur phones use only tor browser and private messaging apps not the big ones
I use tor
Librewolf is better for casual use on PC and Bromite is better for casual use on a phone (at least it gets recent updates now)
You also have a far better time with Tor on PC with Tails
Y'all should go after the department of motor vehicles and all government agencies since they sell your data...
That's not the Internet. This every day life in the hood 🌅
It is not impossible.
From Privacy , you become attached to Online Piracy, of your identity and life.
this is exactly what I'm talking about.
Get a VPN, that should help keep your information private.
Use cash not cards then they can't track your purchase this is also y you should not use loyalty cards
Suppose the world transitions to paying for everything with cards in the future
This is wrong. Everyone deserves the right to some privacy in their life
This is definitely something to think about if you have a son, daughter etc and you think for a single second that there privacy is not being violated think again pervs are everywhere
Eh, I'm just wanting to make sure that my info is not being used for identity theft....the rest? If u have a debit card or cell phone u have been tracked for years...
Hmm, this might be a dumb question, but couldn't you use a Tor Browser to circumvent some of these issues?
Literally
Unfortunately Facebook apps are preinstalled on newer phones,u can't stop Facebook cuz of it even if u don't have Facebook they have your personal information
your traffic can still be decrypted at the exit node, even with a proxy chain to mask this you are sacrificing lots of convenience and time

That's because Privacy is a Narcissists Unreal Fantasy, and it's never Really Existed. If it ever was real, and legitimate, then we'd never have ever had eavesdropping neighbors, tabloids and gossipers. But we do though, and we're even guilty of invading others privacy. So let's not be so self-absorbed, and move on to a real problem we can tackle.
Eavesdropping can only work whilst your around. They cant get other info like banking info from listening.
