We are NOT car mechanics by any stretch, and after reading online about our confusing battery drain problem on the odyssey, we found your video. We are going to replace our relay ourselves. As an elementary school teacher, we are told that we will never know how many students' lives we have touched. You, too, will never know how many people your instruction has helped! Thank you for offering this invaluable information.
I have a 2008 Honda civic that was dead every morning for a week. I called the shop and they wanted 117.00 just to start looking what was draining the battery. I saw this video went to pep boys and bought the ac relay for 16.00 and it worked. I got up this morning praying it would start and it did. Thank you so much.
Thank you. Thank you. You save me a whole bunch of money. I bought a new battery last year and it would drain in the cold air as if I never had replaced it. I came across this video and decided to go by the AC relay at the Honda dealer. As a woman, they looked at me as if I had three heads. It's fixed my problem.i'm so forever grateful
Do It Yourself Bri it's been extremely cold in the Northeast and the car purrs when I turn it on. This had been an ongoing problem since purchasing the car.
Thank you thank you!!! My wife's Honda kept on going dead while she was out of town and the AAA guy said something was draining the battery. She also mentioned she was having issues with the AC and "steam" coming from under the hood. It was a $18 part at Pep Boys. You guys are awesome!
This video just saved me money and fixed my issue. The only thing I would add, is the when you pull the relay and plug it back in you can hear the compressor clutch click in. Since this relay was the same as the blower, I plug the bad relay into the blower spot and the blower came on. Just confirming that the relay is bad. Thanks for post the video.
@@doityourselfbri So, I can't just plug in my AC Compressor Clutch Relay (R8) into the R6 blower motor because it doesn't fit. They have these little plastic tabs on the side of the relays to make sure each relay goes in the right spot I guess. Also, the Blower Motor relay looks like its different in Do it Yourself Bri's video, since the AC Compressor Clutch relay is black and the Front Blower Motor Relay is green. How did you get the AC relay to go into the blower motor spot? Also, is there another way to test if the AC relay is bad?
I'm on my 3rd battery in a year in my 2011 pilot. My AC has continued to work but been shotty. Thank you so much for saving my sanity and money!! I'm so thankful for the wealth of knowledge on the internet and your willingness to share it! It would be really super if Honda would put a battery gauge in the car, instead of no warning and just a dead battery!
Hey! I had the same problem with my 2008 Acura RDX. You have to disconnect the handsfree box. It’s on the passenger side of the middle console. Never had a problem since. The tech was weak back then. Drains the battery. Went through countless batteries and tried everything else under the sun including this. Finally figured it out.
Nailed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 2009 Honda Pilot. First, my AC compressor/fan did not come on but I could feel the cold air within the vents. It was just not being pushed out. Later that day it started working again and the AC was back to normal. The next 3 days every morning that I went out to the Pilot the battery was dead as a door nail. I jumped the battery and went on my way but obviously could not find/understand what was draining the battery. I checked lights and all the common items you think would of caused the drain but still had the battery drain happening. Was very frustrated and getting ready to take it into the shop but thought I would check RUclips first. This video saved me hundreds. It was my exact problem. I changed the AC Relay and have been up and running for about 10 days now without any issues. You can get a relay switch at Auto-Zone or some other parts stores but I decided to pay the 30 bucks and get one from Honda direct to make sure I got one that should work. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 2016 Honda CR-V and thanks to you, it saves me a trip going to the dealer. I replaced the relay and my obdii reading on my vpwr is producing 14V plus and minus and not going down to 12V anymore. Apparently Honda is using a cheap relays.
Tony, I have the same car (2016 CR-V) which has had a parasitic battery drain almost since it rolled off the lot.... just discovered this video and your comment... can you explain where the AC Relay is located on our particular model? I could not locate it based on the diagram that Honda provides... only thing labeled A/C was a fuse under the dash, not a relay switch.
@@marianolopez118 No I didn't. Super frustrating. We had Les Schwab just comp us out a new battery but I guarantee its got 1 year like the last one and well be right back for another due to the same problem.. there is clearly a parasitic draw somewhere but I am not skilled enough to find it and I could not identify which relay I was supposed to replace so I didn't get that far.

Thanks so much! I've had AAA out to the house three times. Bought a new battery and it died twice. I'm looking forward to getting this fixed once and for good!
Just fixed the battery drain on my 2008 pilot! When the AC was turned off you could hear the compressor still running and pushing cold air through the system, even when the car was turned off. For people with a 2003-2008 the relay you need to replace is the "MG CLUTCH" labeled relay. I drove to an advanced auto parts store popped the hood, took the relay into the store and the clerk couldn't find the part in the computer, so he went to the back and was able to manually find a new relay that had the same specifications. I had trouble looking up the part online so that was my solution. Thanks so much for this video!
I have a 2011 Honda Pilot that had a battery suddenly turn up dead with no apparent cause (no interior lights left on, etc.). I replaced the switch identified in this video and recharged the battery. Seems to have fixed my issue. Thanks!
Thank you! After replacing the alternator and battery I found your video. I had these exact symptoms with the freon dump and dead battery and couldn't figure it out.
My 2005 Hyundai Tucson GLS is doing the same thing. The battery keeps dying on me. It's done it several times on me. My car is in the shop now but now I see why testing for this takes so long. Thanks for posting this. It answers my question.
Hi, Sandra Panico. I know it's been quite a while since your post and you have possibly found the issue or no longer drive the Tuscon. However, I had the same issue with mine for over 3 years and mutiple trips to mechanics. Since this may be the same for you, I finally found a fix by removing the fuse to my radio. I'm now without a radio, but the problem is fixed.

Is this a known problem for the Honda CRV as well.. I have a very small battery in my 03 CRV and my battery keeps going dead and it's a brand new battery
I have a 2014 Honda CRV with 15000 miles that has had 5 new batteries and still if I let it set for a few day it wont start. Is there an issue with the Honda manufacturer or can anyone else help with solutions since Honda dealer hasn't a clue.
Hi ! I just bought the brand new 2020 Honda pilot EXL and got battery death . Nothing is on ! Do you think I should change new battery or new Ac relay ? Thank you so much Sir!
Same thing with 2006 crv. As I don't have a new relay to replace, is it ok if I just remove the AC relay? I really don't use AC most of the time so I could live without it at all.. as long as it would solve the dead battery problem.
I went under the hood to check out my a/c relay circuit and there is a huge bar running the width of my engine, making it very difficult to get into the fuse box. Is there an additional procedure for getting into the fuse circuit box on a 2013 Honda Accord?
Holy Cow I have been dealing with battery since I bought my ridgeline 2005 - I know it is officially 2006, but it eats batteries like candy. I stumbled on your video. help please I love my truck, but it has become a don't leave home unless you can walk back situation. Thx
Would this also apply to a CR-V? No freon symptom but if the car sits 3-4 days it's probably dead...a week for sure. Meanwhile my old (2007) Odyssey can sit for a couple weeks no problem....
Hello! I have a Honda Accord 2005, battery drains every day, do you think this solution may work on it as well? I really hope so, my wife is kind of desperate. :(
Hey DIY Bri, when you say the AC relay could fail and your AC isn't working, what do you mean by that? Would it not work at all? Would no cold air come out, no compressor sound? My mom's 2017 Accord Touring has recently been having battery problems. The dealer tested the obvious like the alternator, battery cells, etc and nothing was wrong. But it's constantly dying at random. Sometimes it doesn't even have any crank amps and is dead as can be. Your solution seems very plausible. Being in engineering, I joked with my mom that they weren't thinking outside of the box hard enough, and only looking at the obvious. Little did I know the fuse box may the the issue!
So took my 2000 Honda Odyssey to the dealer because the brand new battery went dead in 3 months. They said there was no parasitic draw. My AC is out too. Should a 3 month old battery with an idle van, only used 3-5 times, go dead?
Honda Accords over at least 30 years window from late 80’s on out, have another similar electronic part Failure issue. The engine rotates with key turn to start, but engine will Not fire up-start and run. Issues Is... The under dash “fuel / starter Relay” switches fail intermittently “. When hot or in warmer weather usually. Not always though. The solder points (all of them) on the relay back side, need re-soldered. As heat makes the original solder connections separate a small amount, killing voltage to the fuel pump but allows the starter to operate. Its a bypass relay! Just locate it, remove it. Get a solder gun and solder or Re-solder all the points on the back of it. Or buy a new one for $ 50.00 or so and IT also will likely fail as their MFG process on them is POOR, the new ones are Not much better! I have had this issue in Three cars and fixed in in two while selling the third unit before fixing it. So the reputation continues Resulting in their known plague failure issues! Hope this helps someone!
Good info . Son hit a curb two tires on passenger side flattened . Fixed tires but realized had to jump start car right at site of incident . No issues two days then can’t start car . I’ve heard about battery sensor now this . Any ideas ?
I have a 2002 CRV. The battery doesn't drain dead but is very slow to start in the morning. The battery is new, tests well and so does the alternator. Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but could this be the same answer in a CRV?
So I see this video is old but my mom has a 2012 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl and unless I disconnect the batter it dies overnight. NO lights left on Alternator and Battery tested fine same with starter. 2 Questions. Will the A/C continue to function correctly when in use and could this be the same problem with my Accord? Any advice would be appreciated as my local mechanic was not very helpful and charged my sister $50 to diagnose and tighten battery terminals with no improvement 😒
Thank You. We are having the same issue with our '09 Honda Ridgeline as well. Replaced the battery a few days ago and today the car won't start. Also, same issue with the A/C where it sounds like water spraying from under hood and then smoke.
Our Honda Accord 2010 battery has had to be replaced 5 times. We only have 30,000 miles on this car. We bought a Honda Accord because it seemed to be the best car out there at the time. I don't know anything about car repair! I watched your video, but I just don't get the easy fix. I'm angry that the Honda battery keeps dying! We also have a 2009 Mazda, and the battery has never died--ever! So what is it with the Honda Accord? We just need some help! Thanks to anyone who might be able to help us.
My Honda Accord 2005 battery dies overnight, and when i use the AC, it shakes the whole car like the compression starts, shakes, stops, then shakes, repeat. Could it be the AC relay? I know you said Pilot only but my car has similat symptom
Due COVID and not going out very much, every single time I try to start my Honda Pilot 2010 will not start and it appears the battery is dead. My battery is a little over a year old and last time it was checked, the technician said the battery was fine. It's January, and I haven't been using my AC at all. Could this AC relay still go out even though I haven't been using it and still draw on the battery? Could it be any other relays that I should check? Thanks in advance!
Looking for help! This whole ordeal has been happening over the past 3 weeks. My 2006 honda pilot keeps dying every morning. Before, I was able to jump it and it would have a charge for the work week. Jumping it once a week worked for the first 2 weeks. But now, I had left it sitting over the weekend and it’s even worse this Monday. It seems as if though there’s not even enough power on it’s own to start the AC. I was able to make it to work from the weekly jump, but later that same day, starting my car to go home, it didn’t start and was in the same condition as this morning. Absolutely no battery. I feel like it’s a battery drain! But also my alternator doesn’t sound quite right. Not sure what to do!:(
Heck, all you need to do is verify that the compressor pulley is rotating even if you have the air switch off. If you can't shut it off, the relay is probably stuck on.
As i can see im not the only one to have battery draining problems on my honda pilot there is like 287 000 views well i gonna give it a try i through maybe it could be my new battery as the alternator charge at 14volt and i did a little trip on the road of 6 hrs last week and less than 10 days later the battery is drain..
My battery drains after a few weeks and is new , you guys think is that relay? It had a new starter a new alternator so idk what it is anymore, please help
I changed the relay but found out that the battery cables were worn out. It stretched out clamp and it’s not holding the battery good. Could that be why it’s draining my battery?
My 2014 Honda Civic is draining, but not every night. I noticed a couple of months ago that I could still raise and lower the power window after the cat was off. I thought that this probably was not supposed to happen. Do you think it could be the delay or do you think it is related to the window? We don't have anything after market attached to drain it, other than plugging my phone in when I am driving. We do have the charger cord plugged in when the car is off, put nothing is plugged into it.
It will, for example, start when I leave work and then not start back up when I stop to get gas on my way home. It does not always die over night. But the draining did seem to start after AC season.
I have a 2013 CR-V with a slow battery draw even with a new battery. The dealership said everything tests good but I still have a weak battery. I tried locking the car even in the garage and still have a weak battery.
Johnny Arcade what was the verdict? We have Fit battery issues in winter time but are now having spring issues. No freon leaks, just dead every once in a while...
I don't get how so many people are saying the AC relay replacement worked. I've dealt with so many Honda's and replaced the damn AC relay just to find out that I wasted $15 on a relay.
Bri I am also having problem the same problem with my 09 pilot. The compressor relay was replaced recently when i also had my a/c compressor replaced this year. I had gone through 2 battery replacement under warranty. Thank god. I am still having the battery draining overnight. The mechanic did a battery test and said the batt is working fine the alternator is also charging. What could my cars problem at this point?
It sounds like you have a draw some place.. Electrical draws can be hard to find... The easy way to find a draw is with a amp meter hooked up to the battery start disconnecting the fuses until the draw gos away... when the draw drops you have found the circuit that has the problem.. then you need to start unhooking everything on the circuit/fuse until you find the problem...Without a very good understanding of electrical systems, wiring diagrams and tools it will be hard to figure out yourself... Would be best to take to a shop that specializes in electrical systems diagnostics
I just noticed one of my lights on the air/heat panel was staying on, I have a 2001 Honda accord, will that light cause my battery to die over night until I can replace the bulb?
+Dana Santana however just replacing the bulb will most likely not fix the problem, the controller may be bad or the wiring to the controller could be the cause your battery dies.

Also wouldn't just removing the bad relay overnight tell you for sure if that was the problem as long as the car started in the morning??? Seems like a good way to be certain this would fix the issue 😉😄
Indeed it would.
Lol the boys at advanced auto told me this wouldn’t cause battery drain and tried to refuse to sell it to me.....I was like I’m buying it now ring me out 😡😡 don’t know if it will work or not but it was $3 with my perks lol. Thanks for the info!
Hi wondering did it work?
Is this a known problem for the Honda CRV as well.. I have a very small battery in my 03 CRV and my battery keeps going dead and it's a brand new battery
GhettoArtKing good question ever get an answer?
I have a 2014 Honda CRV with 15000 miles that has had 5 new batteries and still if I let it set for a few day it wont start. Is there an issue with the Honda manufacturer or can anyone else help with solutions since Honda dealer hasn't a clue.
Thank you . I've been having this problem and keep getting the run around I'll let you know .
Any updates
thank you so much!! This totally fixed my battery draining problem that started last week on my 2009 CR-V. you rock, dude!
I have a 2006 Honda accord 2.2 diesel with similar issue do you think is it worth it to change this AC relay?
apparently bad ac relays cause instant beard growth...amazing
Lol
😂😂😂😂😂
HAHAHA thats hilarious. Didn't notice that the first time.
I saw that instantly and went back to verify lmao

will simply pulling the switch stop the problem until you can get a new one?
Thanks for the simple yet great tutorial!
NAPA part number is AR6242. Pretty common part, cost should be under 9usd
Do the radio and rear lights also have brake lights? My friend at church said it was those items after I found your video at sent it to them.
I don't know what it is about new Honda's in their Electronics but they really suck they're over engineered over thought overcomplicated
Yes it could be however I doubt that year is effected with this problem
Thanks, the slow start sound ended up being a warning that the starter was going. It was replaced, issue resolved.
What fuse is the bottom teal colored one in that same row? Mine is just missing completely and my manual doesn’t label it. Thanks
This is also an issue for the Honda Ridgeline. I have an '09 and replaced the same relay.
Did it work?
Yes, it worked.
Is this just on the body style Pilots shown in your video, or is this common with older ones as well- say 2005’s.
My Honda Accord 2005 battery dies overnight, and when i use the AC, it shakes the whole car like the compression starts, shakes, stops, then shakes, repeat. Could it be the AC relay? I know you said Pilot only but my car has similat symptom
Bri do you know if this was a problem on the 2016 pilot ?
Due COVID and not going out very much, every single time I try to start my Honda Pilot 2010 will not start and it appears the battery is dead. My battery is a little over a year old and last time it was checked, the technician said the battery was fine. It's January, and I haven't been using my AC at all. Could this AC relay still go out even though I haven't been using it and still draw on the battery? Could it be any other relays that I should check? Thanks in advance!
i have a question i have a honda pilot my radio stays on and idk if that may drain my battery cuz i also have a bad ac compressor aswell
thank u so much this video fixed my problem .... but now i noticed that driver side blows hoter air even tho the controls are on low.. any sugestion??
You may have problem with the temperature blend door actuator for that side and or it could be low on Freon.
Can this work on a Honda Civic having the same problem with battery drainage overnight????.... Battery new, alternator good....Posts replaced...??????
Termarkus Scott did it work on Honda Accord?
Termarkus Scott civic I meant
It was an issue on my wifes 08 civic. Replacing the relay fixed it.
Can this also happen on a 2015 Honda CR-V?
Did it?
Would this also eventually kill the alternator as well?
Will the ac still work?
I have an 2003 Honda Pilot and the battery goes dead in about a week but the ac system seems fine. Could this also be a bad relay ?
As i can see im not the only one to have battery draining problems on my honda pilot there is like 287 000 views well i gonna give it a try i through maybe it could be my new battery as the alternator charge at 14volt and i did a little trip on the road of 6 hrs last week and less than 10 days later the battery is drain..
What kind Jump box buttery you use
Yall suppose it would be the same for the 2014 odyssey?
My battery drains after a few weeks and is new , you guys think is that relay? It had a new starter a new alternator so idk what it is anymore, please help
Excellent video and grea explanation!
I changed the relay but found out that the battery cables were worn out. It stretched out clamp and it’s not holding the battery good. Could that be why it’s draining my battery?
Does this AC compressor relay work on a 2015 honda pilot?
can this be diagnosed without buying the part?
What does Freon leaking from hood look like? How would know if this is happening?
Charge your AC with a dyed freon , usually the kit comes with a black light that makes it easier to detect under the light
+MuleMT Try replacing this relay, it's worth a try.
My Fit is doing this, so I'm going to see if this is the issue.
Johnny Arcade what was the verdict? We have Fit battery issues in winter time but are now having spring issues. No freon leaks, just dead every once in a while...
I think this would also apply to ridgeline because it’s based on the pilot
New alternator and new battery. Thing dies for no apparent reason. I’ll check out the relay.
I'm wondering if this problem exists on my wife's 2017 CRV? A dead battery. Am not sure how long batteries last now days.
My mechanic jus told me that the radio needs to be replace because it is draining the battery ,would that be possible?
Just tried it today with my 2006 Honda pilot and the light came back on. I already replaced the alternator and the battery.
I don't get how so many people are saying the AC relay replacement worked. I've dealt with so many Honda's and replaced the damn AC relay just to find out that I wasted $15 on a relay.
What do you find the problem as?
Was my exact problem and a 10 dollar part vs. Who knows what a shop would have charged.
I replaced the ac relay. It fixed my problem. It cost me $24 save me some money to go to a mechanic. Thank you for this video. It helped a lot.
Do you think a bad wiper relay could also drain a battery?
I just noticed one of my lights on the air/heat panel was staying on, I have a 2001 Honda accord, will that light cause my battery to die over night until I can replace the bulb?
+Dana Santana the light staying on defiantly could be the cause your battery dies....Try unplugging the entire controller to see if the battery dies
+Dana Santana however just replacing the bulb will most likely not fix the problem, the controller may be bad or the wiring to the controller could be the cause your battery dies.
Can someone help
Am using Honda pilot model 2015 it can't start everything about the ignition works buh it just can't crank
I didnt know thank you so so much will do tomorrow ty ty ty
Is there anyway to tell if the fuse is damaged?
Yes I test fuses with a fuse tester or test light you can pick up from a part store.
If the part is stuck “on” as you state, won’t the test like or volt meter show that the part is good?
Thank you so.much your video is help full
I'll try it when I get home ! Mine dies I hear what sounds like a clock ticking behind my cluster !
SAME!
