  • hello loves,
    happy freakin' new year! journals and micron pens have been sourced. the excel sheet has been considered, but put away ('cause this is not that serious), but let's sit down and set some 2024 reading goals and reading intentions, shall we? with a dash of chatty reading reflections, of course.

    Your goal around reading articles speaks to me -- I really like to read magazines. Especially Oregon Humanities (free cultural mag for those with an Oregon address), The Sun, Yes!, and Bitch (tragically out of print now). They're the perfect thing to read when I get downtime at work.
    I also find I learn a lot by reading articles, they introduce me to topics I wouldn't have sought out myself. And they're moreso about current events since books take longer to publish!
    A goal of mine is to someday submit a story to one of the magazines I read.

    • @katsfieldnotes
      @katsfieldnotes  6 месяцев назад +1

      Ok dropping all these mag recs, I appreciate you! Ive not heard of any of these! (except for Bitch 😭) I thinkkkk, since were talking 2024 goals, you should make this the year you submit! That would be so incredible and there's never gonna be a better time than right now. Peer pressure has officially begun!

    I absolutely love how deep these reflections are goals are!! This is making me think to also explore non-bookish reads as well as have a low stakes journal spot. I agree that when I don’t put pressure on myself of making the journal look a certain way, more is written and ends up being precious. (Loved the vlog moment too)

    this outfit is soooo cute and cozy!! major agree with not accidentally holding yourself back from chunkier/more challenging books!! same with reading more diversely as well - i feel like there are so many on my radar that i’m interested in but they’re not always what i have access to/pick up. i just picked up parable of the sower by octavia butler in an attempt to get out of my lit fic comfort zone and am enjoying it so far!!

    • @casskrug
      @casskrug 6 месяцев назад

      i’m also attempting to use storygraph more but i think i like goodreads recommendations/suggestions more, and i find so many things from my gr friends. i wanted to try a commonplace/quotes journal last year but i got overwhelmed because i wanted to go back through all my past read books and write down quotes from all of them 😭 maybe i’ll try again this year. basically i feel like you were inside my brain for this entire video 😂

    • @katsfieldnotes
      @katsfieldnotes  6 месяцев назад

      Totally! I think the buzzy stuff to tends to lean toward the homogenous so if were not being intentional, we end up just slipping by without ever getting to them! LOVE that youre reading parable of the sower (and enjoying it!) I am itching to pick that one up!

      YES! Goodreads is more social! Even though I def follow less people on there? But I come away with recs (I dont think ive ever done that with storygraph actually) and omgosh I relate to that impulse! But im sorry that stopped you! Try again and just be super loosey goosey with it! Start it when you start it and fill it up when you fill it up. Honestly turning off all instinct toward perfectionism and doing the literal opposite of what I would normally do has worked like a charm 😂

    Have you read any Claire Keegan? Not a man obviously but I think you might like the Irish voice.
    Also “read more men”? No they’ve had enough readers lol
    Love your idea of reading projects such as the Biggs and Tolentino books and referenced female writers. That will be really interesting to follow.

      I just read my first Keegan last month! I did Small Things Like These and really enjoyed it. Do you have a favorite Keegan?! I'm on the (very long lol) queue for her new collection, but am so curious which you liked best!
      HAHA honestly, I cannot be even a little mad at this statemet. I respect it 😂
      And I'm excited to start it! I do realize Im just giving myself homework assignments, but that's ok 😂

      @@katsfieldnotes that’s my favourite Keegan and the one I’d recommend starting with. Try ‘Foster’ next, or for her short stories ‘Antarctica’ and ‘Walk the Blue Fields’.

    unsubbed after you said reading books by men
    lmao jk then you mentioned Baldwin and i was like aight she got my sub back
    😭😭😭
    also yes yes yes to more lit crit! and lit mags! i feel like they bridge the experience between reader and writer and have us think more critically less of the book, but of the world. and how to move through it. i hope to look at more essays and lit crit with mags and online pubs this year.
    such beautiful goals. by the sounds of it, i know you'll have a rich reading year. can't wait to see what you pick up in 2024!

      Honestly, I deserve it and accept it 😂
      That is the PERFECT way to put it -- totally totally agree. And there is this grit and like the glint of something wild (in the best way) in the writing Ive encountered in lit mags. Less cordoned, maybe. It deserves more of our attention!
      Likewise! Cant wait to see what you get into in 2024!
