    Why is the song for a film called Charlie's Angels named "DON'T call me Angel". What are you then, flightless birds? Shall I call you emus? Charlie's ostriches?

    Wait wait wait...this movie was Elizabeth Bank’s idea, she’s the only one who wanted it, and she wrote and directed it. Her character is front and centre of the poster, she is the leader of the team, and she’s “the first Angel to become a Bosley”...is this a fucking fanfic? Is this Elizabeth Banks putting her own self-insert fanfic character into a franchise?

      Ciata Yagermanjenson not sure if I misunderstood your comment, but if you mean feminists think that man should be excluded, but then get angry at the same men for not taking part, that isn’t feminism, that’s misandry. I’m a feminist, I believe there are women’s issues we should strive to fix, however I don’t hate men. I hate when people co-opt the feminist movement as a disguise for misandry.

    It's the usual situation:
    - Make a movie starring women.
    - Say you're fighting sexism.
    - Pretend all previous, popular movies starring women don't exist.
    - Insult men as much as you can.
    - Put no effort in your movie, showing how low an opinion of the gender you're supposedly praising you really have, because you expect them to show up just because women star in it.
    - No one goes to see it.
    - Blame men for it.
    If these kind of filmmakers put as much effort in their movies as they put in their constant audience insulting they'd make billions.

    Tangled, Hustlers, Frozen, Mama Mia, The Hunger Games trilogy, Maleficent, Mulan, Alita, Captain Marvel, Little Women, Wonder Woman, Tomb Raider, Moana and the Twilight series (which even had Kristen Stewart as the lead) were all female lead (or so called “female movies”) that scored high at the box office (at least 150M - 1B$). Pretty sure not only women saw those movies if they were able to reach that high.

    "women don't walk into a room and immediately start fighting"
    Well, no, in the civilized world no one does. But if I'm walking into an action movie I darn well expect to see some action. And having seen the other Charlie's Angels movies, I expect some crazy shenanigans as strong, fierce, gorgeous women proceed with the ass kicking, and I say this as a young woman who would also presumably be part of the target demographic.
    I've seen Charlie's Angels and Charlie's Angels full throttle dozens of times and while I can say there is definitely cheese, I always thought they were pretty great in terms of trying to empower women. Yeah, there are a lot of male fanservice moments, but what I always took away was that women could be just as badass as men. And because they were women that would often be underestimated it made those badass moments even greater because they overcame insurmountable odds and came out on top. They were strong, athletic, smart, witty, on top of being absolutely gorgeous and incredibly confident. Everything a girl or young woman could possibly aspire to be. The franchise didn't need a "feminist reboot" and would probably have done much better if the director wasn't framing it that way and challenging and outright attacking people who didn't want to go assuming it was going to reflect her man hating attitude.
    All she had to do was come up with a decent action flick, market it as an action movie that featured strong women, and leave it at that and they'd have been fine. Slapping that manhating feminist agenda is what killed it.
    And no, I'm not saying feminism is the problem. I'm saying the directors version of it is.

    Natasha Romanov (black Widow) is an amazing example of how to write a good character. There is a scene in Avengers Assemble where Nat is tied to a chair during an interrogation, where the men are revealing their evil plans to her because they underestimate her and do not see her as a threat. (So she uses that to her advantage and is really interrogating them) and then proceeds to take down all the people in the room still tied to the chair.

    I’m so glad you made a video on this. Elizabeth Banks’s attitude about this movie is a perfect example of what I call “modern white girl feminism.” Which essentially is socially accepted, beautiful white girls throwing a fit anytime something personally effects THEM, or when people don’t blindly praise them for mediocrity. Taylor Swift being another example.
    I hadn’t seen that clip you showed in beginning but the fact that she had the nerve to say “I’ve been asked to see movies starring men my whole life” as if beautiful skinny blonde white women have never been successful leads in movies. Literally 80% of rom-coms star women who look exactly like Elizabeth Banks. For her to say that when there are literally women of so many different races/ religions/ body types that barley get the same love and representation that she does is appalling to me.

    • @MsCorica
      @MsCorica 4 года назад +82

      I do agree that it is very weird, as well as disrespectful to a great number of people and that there's virtually no reason for these women's statements to exist.
      However, I do not think it has that much of a problematic effect, seeing that the general public does not seem to agree with this behaviour at all and is not afraid to show that. Just judging by how (definitely justifiably) heavily these women get criticized, at least on the internet, I would say that there are not necessarily many people finding this acceptable (Example: Brie Larson).
      Furthermore, I think that this is more of a personal fault in individual women and not necessarily a race thing.
      In short, I definitely think that this behaviour needs to be stopped before more people get the idea that this is a good way to act but labelling it as a "white girl phenomenon" is, in my opinion, taking it a bit too far. A few women's delusional views and excuses do not account for an entire race, especially not if most other women do not agree with these views at all.

    • @bannokelly18
      @bannokelly18 4 года назад +85

      Mumphley I’m speaking from my own personal viewpoint considering that I myself am a white girl. It annoys me how these classically beautiful white women think they speak for the women population as a whole.
      And my critiques aren’t solely based on their races. Like I said I’m white, but I also grew up overweight, financially unstable and awkward and would bet that people like Elizabeth Banks and Taylor Swift do not share my same experience or struggles.
      If I can stick with Taylor Swift for a minute just to give another example, is how Taylor Swift wants to be praised for being a “feminist” who sticks up for women when in actually she sticks up for causes that can be applied to her and sings about things that personally effect her. My example being how she sings about shitty relationships and makes herself out to be the victim in all of them. Yet there are women who have been in actual abusive relationships have survived and pulled themselves out of it, who might see Taylor swifts perspective about men to be irrelevant based on what she’s singing about. Not to invalidate Taylor Swifts feelings, because everyone goes through heartbreak. But she’s the type of person who expects to be praised on the contributions she makes to feminism but never expands on her messages past what happens in her own sheltered world.

      @MsCorica 4 года назад +37

      @@bannokelly18 I do agree with that. I also do not consider what they're doing to be feminism. Especially when they start using feminism as an excuse for completely idiotic statements (e.g. "Men didn't want my film to be a success" or "Men's opinions on my movies are irrelevant because I am a woman" (solely paraphrasing here, I do not have the nerve to watch the actual statements again)). I also do not think it to be feminism or women empowerment if you rip apart men for not answering your text messages or breaking up with you (as shown by Taylor Swift).
      I think their behaviour is problematic in the way that people might think that this is what women believe feminism to be and discredit it further. These people are either scrambling for excuses or just want to be praised for something that's absolutely not worthy of praise and I see how that can discredit people that actually fought for themselves and overcame horrible situations.
      I just had a problem with relating it to race. I know that all the culprits (at least the ones I know about) are white but I truly think that this is primarily an individual problem and people could get the wrong idea if we associated it with race. I do not think their whiteness alone has much to do with their decisions and view points being crappy.
      It's also relieving to see that most people do not agree with these opinions and speak up about them. Thus, I believe the most damage this behaviour is doing at the moment is discrediting feminism and maybe strengthen some people's believes that white girls are entitled and disrespectful.
      Obviously, this is still problematic behaviour as other girls and women could see the women in question as role models and start to behave similarly.

    • @bannokelly18
      @bannokelly18 4 года назад +28

      Mumphley I agree wholeheartedly with what your saying.
      I’m not saying race always plays a factor in these women’s mindset but sometimes it does when it comes to the entitlement. For example Elizabeth Banks and Olivia Wilde throw fits when their movies don’t break the box office and demand the movie going audiences to go support women directors and if they don’t there’s a fundamental flaw in the audiences thinking. However someone like Ava Duverney (I think I spelled that wrong), who is a prominent female black director, I have never heard use her gender or race as an excuse to why her films arent criticality or commercially successful. Meanwhile people like Elizabeth Banks don’t stick their necks out or slam audience members who don’t support Ava, or other female directors (regardless of their race) works because it dosent matter to her.
      I think Elizabeth Banks even got in trouble because she criticized Stephen Spielberg for not having a female lead in any of his films, when in actuality he directed the color purple with Whoopi Goldberg as the lead.
      I hope my message isn’t getting lost, I know this isn’t a race issue, I just think in certain instances these women’s sheltered viewpoints can keep them from realizing that not all women need to praise them, and sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes racial and social ignorance has to do with it.

    • @MsCorica
      @MsCorica 4 года назад +12

      @@bannokelly18 I can definitely see your point about the connection between their entitlement and a secure, sheltered life. People with actual problems or people who actually went through hell are probably way less likely to complain about such petty stuff. Especially in this way.
      In the end, I think a lot of it comes down to extreme ego problems and a weird perception of the world around them. They try to justify their failures in any way possible and especially in any way that prevents them from taking the fall. (As we all know, directors usually do not have a huge impact on a movie at all and if it fails, they most likely didn't have any part in it.)
      And the additional warped sense of reality makes it seem okay to them to throw around disrespectful statements to "safe" their own skin (I can't judge whether or not they believe in what they are saying but you need to some kind of weird reality perception if you think it's alright to blame all your problems on men and publicly insult them).
      And I agree, their defence that they are doing it in the name of feminism and that they want to empower other women completely contradicts the fact that they are only concerned about their own problems and declare them as general social issues while never caring for the problems of other female creators/ women in general or jump to their defence.
      All in all, these women seemingly just can't live with personal issues and failures and make them into nation/ world wide problems while also ignoring actual problems and being extremely disrespectful about it all. Yikes.

      Funny enough, the success of Mad Max: Fury Road (along with the Kamala Khan version of Ms. Marvel) is probably the reason why we have so much SJW media right now. At the time, it was acclaimed for having a strong feminist message in a film franchise primarily for men with women who weren't primarily defined by their relationships that take down an allegory for the patriarchy. Thing is, that's not what George Miller intended. He just wanted to make a film about survivors escaping a dystopic regime. Furthermore, you had positive male characters like Max and Nux who played a major role in Furiosa's victory. A lot of lesser writers looked at this as just a way to say that women are better than men with extremist feminist groups on social media making this view of the world look like what the majority of Americans actually thought.

      The more people say this, the more I question my own memory. From my perspective, Carol had depth, or at least, the depth one could reasonably expect from an amnesiac action star. Maybe I just filled in gaps that weren't there and figured they were implied. I was particularly swayed by Maria and Monica Rambeau

    Best show of the “women approach fighting differently” thing I’ve seen was in Atomic Blonde. Lorraine used a lot of her environment and clever thinking to fight, but it was no less brutal for her being a woman. Her smacking someone into a wall and someone smacking her into a wall felt equally visceral. On the flip side you have stuff like Avengers, where the action is highly stylized. And yet Black Widow’s fighting feels the most extravagant precisely because she can’t just punch someone through a wall (and using the dancer/assassin background of the character). This is kinda ramble-y, but basically you can make more interesting fight scenes than the Charlie’s Angels movie had, even with a “women fight differently” mindset.

      There's an unspoken rule: you can't hurt women. Notice, how male leads are beaten, tortured, pushed and punished? How they are punished sometimes for taking risks? Now do you ever see female leads endure this? No. Because if you do, you're accused of being a "woman hater" and "encouraging abuse of women" when in reality, if someone goes up against an opponent stronger then them, they WILL get beat down, no matter male or female. And because we can't allow female leads to have painful experiences, they feel flatter, more boring and less authentically strong.
