But it’s actually an undisclosed affiliate link and they do it that way to try and skirt the laws around disclosing affiliate links. @@kayk480 generally people already expect those must haves to be linked through an affiliate link, and there's a difference between an affiliate link that anyone could get for any product and an advertisement like this. After all an influencer can link any amazon product they actually like and get an affiliate commission, they don't need to promote one in specific.
Even if it's not sponsored, if they're popular influencers, they're likely to get better stuff so the company gets a good name, and it is actually "genuine" on the influencers part, but everyone else who buys it gets the badly, cheaply made ones. I learned about this recently fyi, and while not everyone does it, there have been a few companies who find out who's an influencer and who isn't, so the influencers get the good things regardless
it's not my bag, but clearly enough people do like that kind of thing for entertainment, that the Kardashians have made their lives out of it. It's a bit like "I wonder how the other half live" kind of thing
This isn’t even true. At least, it’s only done in public for the cameras. As someone who was fortunate enough to have millionaire parents, being rich isn’t just how much money you have. It’s how much you spend. True wealth is earned by spending less than what you earn and saving. As described in “The millionaire next door” rich people actually live a minimal lifestyle and don’t blow cash on stupid purchases. No salary can sustain someone who constantly overspends. I live on my own, without an allowance, and skills like cooking at home instead of eating out are huge money savers.
In adulthood, struggling to afford being a creative has made me realize how much wealthy kids are gaslighting us. And realizing how wealthy you have to be to be privileged enough to pursue arts full time without fear of not being able to afford rents, heat, utilities, insurance, classes, constant training, etc. It’s tough and I pray a lot bc so much is not in our favor for industries that are already quite elitist.
Hugs and prayers for you. I know the feeling. I have coworkers who only "work" because their parents make them. They act like everyone can afford delivery lattes and trips to Cabo unless they are on meth or something. Meanwhile, I'm eating buttered toast for supper to afford fountain pen ink.
The arts are pretty inaccessible sadly. I would love to do so much and take a ton of classes and really dive in, but I just can't due to monetary issues. I'm definitely not underprivileged, but the arts (or musical theatre in my case) are just so hard to pursue without a ton of money. There is a lovely community theatre I've done stuff with that is working hard to make the arts accessible to everyone, and they've truly been incredible. I try to use the small privilege I have to donate monthly to them so that they can keep the arts accessible. Hopefully in the future more people will be able to pursue them, but for now, it's an uphill battle.
Unfortunately it's pretty insanely hurdlisciously hard to make it as an independent artist unless you pair it with being a RUclips or are producing creative work as part of a larger team or effort. It's definitely possible and has been done but not without either lending your skills and experience as a cog within a larger clockwork for a while or living off of savings for 10-25 years as a "rich kid" yourself.
So I’m a student at Columbia and I gotta say i think this is fake. @@jeffinjoseph8916 pretty sure it's very illegal to not disclose any connection to a product you are advertising, as it can be considered deceptive marketing. Straight from the FTC on their internet advertising guide: "Connections between an endorser and the company that are unclear or unexpected to a customer also must be disclosed, whether they have to do with a financial arrangement for a favorable endorsement, a position with the company, or stock ownership."
I would like to think this is the whole company, purely because if your company has a six person marketing team and not one person working as any kind of legal advisor or anything, then it's not just your app that's badly done, it's the whole dang company!
There's another comment by user Tcbca that claims they worked worked legal marketing with them but they voided the contract in the end bc they couldn't figure it out with the founder..... So I guess they tried but decided it was okay to just give up that part lol
No, they should pay people to do it. There’s also an article about the people in Colombia hired for $2 US per hour to watch abuse videos and be the human moderation aspect of tiktok.
..you know you can pay interns right? And I am pretty sure Federal interns are paid. Intern refers to a specific labor category. You know because it is a different work expectation than a regular employee.
@@k80_ having interns do something doesn't mean you don't pay them. No one should do work without paying (I know it's sometimes not how it is in some industries but that's how it should be. Also federal or state or country office interns are probably paid though? )

Could also try reporting to the Attorney General office. They do a lot of consumer protection investigations and since they're a gov agency they'll work in tandem with the FTC on complaints like this but they're smaller and more local so sometimes easier to talk to.
I agree on reporting to the Attorney General office. My mom worked as a paralegal for the attorney general and she even got them to look into this one has station all the locals knew were price gouging, especially when any winter storms hit.
I almost feel like these rich kids are actually just broke college kids acting rich. bc I can’t imagine why someone would risk their reputation for money or brand deals unless you actually needed the money. or maybe these trust fund babies just got their allowance cut down from 3,000 to 2,000 and now can’t afford their $1,000 shopping sprees 🤷♂️
I thought that was exactly the point. It’s an ad. There’s a script. They all say the same things and reuse the same wording and sometimes even the same footage. They didn’t actually all just buy a new lap top, rent the same apartment, spend a crazy amount on groceries or taxis or whatever. That’s the script, intended to provoke negative interactions to make the video go viral…
Yea, it seems like maybe one of them is actually rich, and the others are kind of riding their coattails, using their footage and purchase history to make it look like they are all trust fund babies
It’s a small start up. These are not college kids, these are workers who likely just out of college (or an intern) and wear many hats: marketing, development, etc. If you ever worked at a start up, it’s pretty evident - you have to do everything yourself to get a modicum of return. And based on the fact their “Oops” footage is basically all the same, they probably connected it to the business’ bank account… so it’s not their personal purchases. Any speculation on their personal finances or “trust fund baby” status is moot.
All of these are filmed at my university, i see them film sometimes on campus and she's in buildings where you need a university ID, so maybe she's a student, prof, or worker idk

Yep. I'm just a multimillionaire on my own merit, and I could never even imagine using an app in lieu of my financial advisor. That's how idiots and their money are quickly parted.
Is it just me or did nobody else see that she spent 16.4k on a 15k allowance. Even breaking it down. She's still over 400 on the 15k not including the 1k from the app. And none of that went to school expenses.
The most improbable part of this is pretend random person actually speaking about how much money they spend. If someone said pull up your bank account and show me how much you spend my immediate response would be yeah no I’m not pulling up my bank details for you in any capacity.
i don't have tiktok so i usually only see the "how i spend 15k in college" screenshots and zero mentions of the app, so i had no idea they were an ad, figured it was just annoying rich people lol it's so so interesting how these apps promote themselves because i usually have zero desire to try them, they always seem shady and barely functional anyway if you want to track your expenses, you don't even need an app (i get the convinience but i already hate how much info apps have about me lol). i just write everything down/keep my reciepts and with a bit of googling you can build an exel sheet to register your expenses 🤷♀ my expenses also tend to be pretty consistent every month, so it's pretty easy for me to keep track
I'm gonna take a wild guess that there's something dangerous about the app - maybe collecting e-mail/password combos (a lot of people use the same password for multiple things, and if you can get into an e-mail account you might be able to get info for and hijack other things like bank accounts), maybe straight up asking for credit card details, maybe just grabbing data about where people are, what they're talking about, or to help spread misinformation... The ads are already super shady and clearly trying to make people want to be in on the 'secret'. There's a saying - "if you're not paying for the product, YOU are the product'. What are the people making this app getting out of people using it? If we don't know how it benefits them, that's a huge problem. The Apple store says the app may collect financial info, identifying info, contact info, and diagnostics - all linked to you. If there weren't alarm bells ringing before, there should be now. Beautiful breakdown, Amanda. More please! Shady companies need to be called out so potential victims have a bit more of a chance to escape.

I have learned in the last 2 months that not only websites but even phone numbers are calling people on automated systems they let it ring once they know you'll call back cuz you it's a local number you think it's somebody you know and they get money from you calling them back and all they do is hang up on you it's maddening and I just found out that IP addresses are included in all the emails you send I know I should have known that years ago I didn't and whenever you look at a website or deal with the website with your email that's why you start getting all kinds of third party crap because they have taken your IP address and sold it so they get money for every little transaction whether you look at the whole video or whether you give it a up or a down or comment everything makes them money that's all this is one giant ad the entire RUclips basically maybe even the entire internet.
Uber Rich kids in fancy schools is a norm for NYC. Advertising it is not. There's always a kidnapping risk. That kind of rich people come to NYC for the anonymity. It's like the connotation has shifted from "this is a way to visually represent info and physicalize theories" to "this is the batshit rabbit hole I've been spiralling down, get ready cause I'm gonna learn you a thing or two
I can see the potential appeal of the "oops" feature, particularly for those who often do spend when they didn't plan to/mean to which is really common among people with mental health issues or ADHD. They call it the ADHD tax for a reason. That said, there are SO MANY better apps! There are apps specifically designed for overspenders/impulsive spenders that when you categorize something as an unintended purchase, it'll prompt questions about the purchase that have you reflect on why the purchase was made without vilifying it because that's the last thing someone who is a compulsive/impulsive/oops spender needs. It's far better that an app ask if it was an emotional purchase and guides you through potential reasons for that and how to handle it better next time or if it was an unintended need purchase like... you forgetting your charging cable at the library... again or an overdraft fee because you forgot to check your bank balance... again or a late fee because you misplaced that statement... again. And apps specifically designed for this help you then think about ways to prevent such things again... like paying that bill as soon as it comes in because if you don't you set it down or getting in the habit of not making online purchases as soon as you fill the cart and instead stepping away or opting for a really brightly colored charging cable so its more likely to enter your field of notice and less likely to be forgotten... the list goes on. The apps I'm thinking of don't give specific answers but are wonderfully worded to help guide you to a solution that might work for you. Mint is great... if you remember to use it... and don't have an issue with spending.
Intoxicated Lifetime Movie Theory: All of the “character” app accounts are a single account. The account is linked to the app’s company card. The charges shown on screen are funded by the company’s “budget” and are written-off as business expenses. All of the footage was filmed in a week that was spent buying Ubers, meeting at we work, finding/purchasing clothes and locations for video variations, lunches, snacks, and getting a MacBook for the office. The company put a few thousand into creating an illegal marketing campaign that they hired “influencers” for. Or maybe some are interns given an assignment. They all received the experience and food/clothes as private gifts instead of traceable monetary compensation for being participants. And then internet sleuths exposed it all. Just a scam plot I’d come up with given the task.
part of me is also thinking it might be related to a class? im a business major and we do a lot of projects related to this type of thing- it is definitely suspicious though

The one thing I can kinda see their side on is the actual "oops" function on the app... I think you're right in saying that you're probably just too good with your money as a default to find a feature like that useful or interesting... I have pretty big impulsivity issues (thanks ADHD you absolute legend) and having a feature in my bank app that encouraged me to go back through my spending and be mindful of whether or not something was actually a good purchase could be somewhat beneficial. The app as a whole does look pretty sucky and the marketing fraud is ridiculous, but I can definitely see that feature helping some people like myself with being more mindful of our spending habits

If you’re working for a company or you’re the founder, you can just enter fake data in and pretend you spent those amounts. Those people could’ve just not spent anything and they’d still have something to show on their screen. I do it myself to test my code.
I genuinely don't understand what kind of audience watches people brag about how much money they spend as entertainment.
It’s meant to get people mad so they’ll comment
Other gullible rich kids, brand deals and/or crypto-bros who think they can cash in on them to promote their coin as a a partnership
i feel like it’s wish fulfillment
it's not my bag, but clearly enough people do like that kind of thing for entertainment, that the Kardashians have made their lives out of it.
The ones about the university are definitely filmed on the public parts of the campus but none in the private/student only spaces like the libraries or any classrooms/workspaces. There’s a lot of obnoxious rich kids here though so hey who knows lol but there’s always people near campus promoting apps to the students 🤷🏼♀️
I think her account is an "art project". A social experiment. Not real at all.
It’s possible they might know other rich kids who go to Columbia and gain access through them.
I could listen to you take apart shady people and companies all day
Same. When she stares at the camera and talks directly to them. I love it
She plays no games
tiktokers need to start being held accountable for undisclosed sponsorships. It’s so insidious
There’s a thing now with brands obviously stealing random users content and blasting it as marketing
I think it's their own app
I like your pfp, and i think you’re right
There's another comment by user Tcbca that claims they worked worked legal marketing with them but they voided the contract in the end bc they couldn't figure it out with the founder..... So I guess they tried but decided it was okay to just give up that part lol
FTC should just have interns that sit and watch social media to get these people.
Also federal or state or country office interns are probably paid though? )
I volunteer
@@k80_ interns can get paid... any reputable big enough company will pay their interns, it's mainly start ups that don't.
The ads on tik tok are out of control and worse is the app is all used be children and teenagers. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. This is another COPPA or something, like a hawk waiting in the background.
Yikes. I'm here for it, if it happens to them 😂
mobile advertising in general is cringe
Yea, it seems like maybe one of them is actually rich, and the others are kind of riding their coattails, using their footage and purchase history to make it look like they are all trust fund babies
agreed, as someone who actually hangs around and went to school with kids who had mad bread they don’t behave like this AT ALL
It’s a small start up.
They can't even afford wigs to pretend they're different strangers when stopped on the street 💀
i wonder if the people commenting 'what is this app' first are also marketing people
Probably. They comment with a dummy account they pin the comment so it looks like multiple people were asking.
@@biazacha yea like those bot threads about investing you see in random comment sections here.
That was my first thought and it's likely most (although not necessarily all) of them are.
Oh that was my immediate assumption, that way they get to say the name without looking like they're advertising it on purpose, even though they are.
Imagine spending $2200 on clothes in a week for a normal person. It's ridiculous that's more than my rent.
I've done that...... once..... for my wedding. Which included paying for everyone on my side of the wedding party lol.
it’s a lie. they’re lying about how much they spend to get comments like this one! question everything when it comes to people flexing on social media lol
Did you even watch the video?
It's possible if it's luxury brands, so in reality it's not a bunch of clothes, could be just a T-shirt lol
@@ellelee8760 That’s what I’m saying. They’re lying to purposefully get people riled up. Someone that’s actually rich who spends that kind of money is poor in reality.
What I've just realized is that there is a possibility these guys are not being paid by the company, and that's if they are the founders. Tbh it does sound like an app that first and second year econ majors in NYC would try to build. But I think they would still have to disclose that relationship.
just listening to that tiktok pissed me off and that in itself pisses me off because I KNOW THAT'S THE POINT, the point is to drum up engagement and negative or confused reactions and man ... I just really hate this way of marketing stuff that's so prevalent on tiktok. anyways thank you for as always for your videos and exposing this stuff!!

If it's NYC she might just not have a parking space for her car. or you know, just likes being wasteful

@@calvinng111 surely when you rent one you'd have to park it though? Unless she does her drive and then takes it back and just gets another one the next day.
Apparently rich NYC people rent a car anytime they want to go anywhere for the weekend and assume everyone does this because why would you put the wear and tear on your own car… this is a conversation I’ve had before. 😏
Amanda is like if Columbo was really interested in TikTok.
Just one more thing...
Lets get Gianni Matragrano to do a Columbo voice over of this video 😂
I’m sorry, Columbo?
If tech billionaires kids posted what “finance” app they use, it’s called Contacts, then they tap on “NAME” to call the person at their family office. No billionaire would be using the “INSERT BANK’S NAME HERE” 1-800 #. LOL. This episode was hilarious! Thanks for posting it! 😂 Rage clicking to the max.
This is true.
lol agree
Yep. I'm just a multimillionaire on my own merit, and I could never even imagine using an app in lieu of my financial advisor.
That's how idiots and their money are quickly parted.

I absolutely love how persistent you are for facts. Its so rare in todays society. Most people want to live in the clouds. Love your content.
Is it just me or did nobody else see that she spent 16.4k on a 15k allowance. Even breaking it down. She's still over 400 on the 15k not including the 1k from the app. And none of that went to school expenses.
Weird from a budgeting app to get the numbers wrong. Maybe its part of the "engagement bait"
It’s obvious that her spending isn’t real, it doesn’t even add up, she spent over 1k in groceries which is insane when she also eats out every day
The most improbable part of this is pretend random person actually speaking about how much money they spend. If someone said pull up your bank account and show me how much you spend my immediate response would be yeah no I’m not pulling up my bank details for you in any capacity.
‘I’m Charlie day with the strings on the wall!’ 😂🎉 I’m here for the content, but I stay for the comedy 🥰🙌🏻🤣
i don't have tiktok so i usually only see the "how i spend 15k in college" screenshots and zero mentions of the app, so i had no idea they were an ad, figured it was just annoying rich people lol it's so so interesting how these apps promote themselves because i usually have zero desire to try them, they always seem shady and barely functional
anyway if you want to track your expenses, you don't even need an app (i get the convinience but i already hate how much info apps have about me lol). i just write everything down/keep my reciepts and with a bit of googling you can build an exel sheet to register your expenses 🤷♀ my expenses also tend to be pretty consistent every month, so it's pretty easy for me to keep track
Shady companies need to be called out so potential victims have a bit more of a chance to escape.
it’s crazy how they thought they would just get away with something so illegal 💀💀💀
As someone who is only able to work part time on minimum wage and was on wellfare only a year ago, this feels obscene.
That's insane and they definitely need to be reported
Thanks for informing us of these shenanigans Swell! 🍿

I'm glad that you're bringing this topic up.

To me these are likely actor/model hires that come to a WeWork to drop off/make content to share online for a business. WeWorks are not that cheap in NYC.
Not like that though. I went to NYU with legit celebrities and ppl weren't dropping THAT kind of money and talking abt it.

You're such a smart content creator. I would've never seen these videos for what they are.
This type of media analysis is what separates you from the rest of the population in a manner of speaking.
I so appreciate your dedicated sleuthing skills
This is definitely a group of rich college students who created this app. I live in NYC, if you need someone to check out leads lol
Anytime the wealthy and well to do try to interact with us “poors“ I immediately know that they’re up to no good.
Also like anytime someone claims to make a lot of money and they'll show you how for a small fee of $10,000. That's actually how they're making money not whatever bullshit they're peddling.
I appreciate the level of investigative journalism. This is amazing!
Every time a young kid says they're rich I'm always like "you mean your parents are rich"
Super unrelated but something I've noticed that the joke at 1:34 made me realize is that as time goes on more and more people (especially on the internet) when referring to the red string conspiracy board refer to Always Sunny rather than the fact it's a tactic used bu police investigators.
It's like the connotation has shifted from "this is a way to visually represent info and physicalize theories" to "this is the batshit rabbit hole I've been spiralling down, get ready cause I'm gonna learn you a thing or two
Thank you for talking about how the app isn't even good!! Somehow, that's the most infuriating part of this to me
you would be a TERRIFYING stalker hahahahaha just for like...the amount of patience and hyperfixation
Does the app show money spent on FTC fines?
Maybe that's the "oops" part
This is such a good joke omg 😂
This degree of sleuthing is unhinged. I am in love with you.
Do y'all not have actual bank apps in the US? Like apps made by the bank that you use.
every single american bank app has budgeting features, so this app is totally redundant
You have by far the easiest to listen to voice of any RUclipsr in this category! Moment your vids pop up I'm on it!
The dedication to the investigation is crazy..I love it
i think oops founder shot herself in the foot by calling the app 'the snapchat of personal finance' 😭
This, but the company is Russian Intelligence
part of me is also thinking it might be related to a class? im a business major and we do a lot of projects related to this type of thing- it is definitely suspicious though

But my fyp is not like this and I received the benefits more than the toxicity of it.
This is an amazing video. Keep calling these sketchy ass scammers out on your platform and expose their sketchy asses! Everyone should report this shit to FTC when they see it. I started doing that a year or so ago and several scammy posts/ accounts have been taken down.

Excellent. What a f•cking world we live in.
If you’re working for a company or you’re the founder, you can just enter fake data in and pretend you spent those amounts. Those people could’ve just not spent anything and they’d still have something to show on their screen. I do it myself to test my code.
