    Many artists struggle to paint hair that looks lifelike. In this video, I'll show you, using a size #6 round brush, how to add shadows in just the right spots to give the illusion of wet, stringy hair.
    This is the sixth video in our series of the oval acrylic portraits. I'm painting in the acrylic glazing technique so it will take some time to build up the richness of color and depth. You can learn how to do this too! There will be more videos to follow, so subscribe and keep in touch!

    Thank you so much. Pls can you tell me how you get up to the draft you begin with? Do you colour the whole area in brown and then move to whiter shades? Thz love your work!

      Hi Gabrielle! Thanks for the kind words. I use a classical glazing technique, adapted for acrylics. I start very light, mixing a little bit of paint into a lot of clear acrylic medium. Then I very faintly "ghost" in the image, blocking in the entire value and color structure. I add many, many layers, and each time I add more layers, the painting gets more complex with additional nuances and detail. If you check out some other videos on my channel, you'll see paintings early in the process. That will give you a feel for how the glazing technique works. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, I added a comment about how you started this and what colour blonde you used and all I had to do was read through the comments :) I will look further and see if I can get a grasp on what you did. Thank you so much for sharing! Your painting of this child is so beautiful.

    Very nice style, i love this watercolour-ish use of acrylic paint.
    Subbed and liked.
    Can't believe i've only just found your channel. I search for painting portraits more or less everyday. Whilst watching a smartTV i searched acrylic glazing and this among others came in the search.
    I have a question if you don't mind!
    What type of acrylic paints do you use? they look almost like fluid or softbody.
    Cheers from the UK

      @fineartbymattphilleo  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Sniper, I use Novacolor. They are manufactured in a suburb of Los Angeles, and they ship direct to artists. They are fluid, but not as fluid as typical fluid paints. They are designed for muralists. So they have to be smooth enough to cover a wall without too much texture. I love them. They are high quality and way less expensive than what you buy at the art store. But shipping overseas would probably make them too expensive for anyone outside the U.S. Thanks for your kind words!

      @@fineartbymattphilleo Thank you very much. gutted the paints arn't sold over here. I have acrylic ink, procolour acrylics and W&N artists acrylics and it looks like i'll be buying some soft body and some matt medium too. I have a bottle of Gloss medium but didn't haven't really used it. But will definitely be buying some softbody paint.
      Cheers.

    I live in Perth Western Australia and I am finding that even using retarding medium.. my paints dry so quickly (its very hot here.. always over 35C during the summer.. often. up to 42C some times.. was 43C about 3 weeks ago. Anyway.. it makes it hard to use acrylics.. I can't afford oil paints. :(

      pixiepqueen , wow, I thought we had it hot when it got up to 33 C here in the Bahamas, but that is serious heat. I have been fighting that problem for a while now too. I use a masterson wet palette and sometimes use my humidifier in the room. I also use an airbrush with just distilled water and spray the painting before I lay the paint and my palette occasionally too. Sometimes I use different slow dry mediums also.

      I like synthetic golden talkon or white nylon, with an assortment of flats and rounds from 1” to 0. Princeton is a pretty nice affordable brand. I also buy them in multi pack kits too at Hobby Lobby. Fine Touch brand.
