Phil, I have been dabbling with various AI models as well as an Industrial Designer.
I have found that it helps to put really careful consideration and be really deliberate about what goes into the prompt. It is akin to writing a good design brief for your team. Secondary, with AI models like Stable Diffusion you can provide negative prompts. The negative prompts helps the model to disregard certain datasets on which it has been trained on. Like in the example you provided, you can give a negative prompt mentioning "Etsy" so that it doesn't generate anything close to those that are on Etsy. This can also be done to negate brands (possibly competition from the same category of products).
Moreover, going back to my initial point that the prompts need to be really well crafted with a lot of context, details, and specifics. AI can't reflect true real-time user research like talking to actual people, that would help you build a persona for your product/ brand. Doing the actual research yourself would eventually help to build the insights for more exacting design briefs and prompts.
    Cool channel, I subscribed! :)

All very true! Midjounrey has negative prompts as well. --no "xxxxx" And I've tried using it a little. It isn't always very reliable though! I hadn't thought about using it to exclude images from certain sources. That's a neat idea! I'm planning on getting into stable diffusion shortly but haven't got round to it yet!

I believe you have a fair point overall. Also, important to notice that if I’m not mistaken the 2021 limitation is not accurate anymore. Plus, not sure if it’s a “HUGE” problem to have AI taking inspirations from the web considering you feed it with your concept as well. Basically you just proved that your own “creation” was not original in the first place. That’s not an AI problem, right?

I take your point. But there is a huge problem if you think that ai is creating a unique concept for you when actually it isn’t. You could end up infringing someone else patent or registered design and make it impossible to protect your concept from other people copying it risking the investing you’re making in NPD.

Yes this is definitely true, Ai is not a designer it is making a collage of all images on the internet. I would suggest to take the out put design and run a Google search with that image. We have been using it to get ideas but ai think it should not be the final design

Absolutely agree and that's a great idea to search the output to help ensure that you're not infringing someone else's design!

Yes! Really sorry but I messed up the audio on the other one - it was out of sync and it was offending my perfectionist side!

It's interesting to see the potential of AI in transforming rough sketches into impressive illustrations.

I have been working as a designer for 15 hrs. One thing I can tell is there is no original design in the world nowadays. Design is a tool to solve problems. Not to gen images. Visualization is a very important step to communicate with your client. To me. AI is kinda handy tool to brainstorm new ideas but not gen presentation renderings. Not for now at least.

I agree with you. I think it is a good tool for idea generation and that the real value in design comes after when that idea needs turning into something that is a joy to use, cost effective to manufacture, durable etc. but I was surprised to find that ai is also highly limited as an idea generation tool in that in it easy to end up pursuing an idea that wasn’t original to start with.

Image models create averages of every token you give it in a prompt. It doesn't really create images like designers do.

    • @ProductInnovationAcademy
      @ProductInnovationAcademy  Год назад +1

That is true. It's also a question of whether designers can use AI to get usable results. It's just a tool currently!

@@ProductInnovationAcademy I'm a graphic designer/art director and I'm using it but it's a miss or Hit kind of situation. I tried to use it to create assets for some digital products I make but the results require heavy editing so I end up using it just as a mild reference or to get some ideas. I have noticed, however that most people don't notice the flaws in the results. For instance. Midjourney is great at creating characters for concept art but the details in the construction of the clothing or getting the right colors or texture for a piece of gear or clothing are not there so I have to edit it. My boss , doesn't really see any difference but the 3d sculpter I work with does and thanks me for it since he doesn't have to guess.

@@ellenripley4837 I find it so frustrating when it nearly gets it but it just isn’t quite right! Have you tried use Dall.e to correct the output from Midjourney? I haven’t tried this myself but have seen from yt vids on it and I think that might be the best way to cut out that final heavy photo editing part. I have just used it to create a logo and again it just isn’t quite right but I’m planning on using a quickly edited version of the output as a brief for a freelancer to speed that up and save considerable freelance costs as I had a clear idea from working with mj on concepts, as to what I wanted/needed the final design to be.

@@ProductInnovationAcademy A tip with working with a freelancer to make your life easier. Create a moodboard of the logos that you like and how they look when they are used or ask them to create a brand stylescapes for you before they jump into making any logos.

@@ellenripley4837 that’s a good tip! Thanks for that. I do think a midjourney and freelancer combination might be a good solution but we’ll see!

AI is just recycling old crap. It doesn't actually create anything original that was never thought of before.
