    Imagine finding an area which looks like it'll hold a relic, only for it to just.. not be a relic. It's made of the same material, but it just has no power; it is simple an ordinary object, made of strange material.

    • @pig4295
      @pig4295 День назад +5

      I do wonder if the magic could fade or be used up 👀

    • @SebastienGendron-uk4po
      @SebastienGendron-uk4po День назад +3

      @@pig4295 Huh, good question. A relic could have an infinite amount of magic. Still, the material it is imbued with is fragile and not meant for fighting (only defense, which complicates things even more), or the relic has a limited amount of uses for its magic, once it is used up it reverts back to an ordinary useless object. The fact that wanderers don't know if a relic is cursed or not is already a risk, I can't even imagine a wanderer using up all the magic of a relic and not knowing it until it's too late.

    • @MCPhssthpok
      @MCPhssthpok День назад +4

      Or imagine finding a relic after a long, dangerous journey but not being able to work out what it does. Maybe it's broken or worn out, but maybe it only has an effect in specific circumstances.

    • @SebastienGendron-uk4po
      @SebastienGendron-uk4po День назад

      @@MCPhssthpok Interesting way to look at it, for all the wanderer knows the relic could have a mundane magical use that the ancient people used in their everyday life (no combative uses) like toilet paper. Imagine a world where ancient magical artifacts are revered, their true nature long forgotten after centuries of mythologizing. The wanderer stumbles upon a relic, an ornate, glowing object sealed in a lavish chest, surrounded by intricate carvings that tell tales of its "wondrous" power. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find for any adventurer-legendary and priceless. Scholars might have speculated that it holds the secret to ultimate power, perhaps controlling the elements or bestowing eternal life.
      But as the wanderer carefully studies the artifact, nothing happens. No power emanates, no curses unfold, and no divine revelations occur. With growing confusion, they consult an eccentric historian who specializes in ancient languages. After intense study, the historian discovers that the writings around the relic are not grand proclamations of power but rather... instructions for use. The artifact, as it turns out, is nothing more than a magically self-cleaning object that ancient people used in daily hygiene routines-magic toilet paper, enchanted to remain perpetually fresh, durable, and always ready for use. In the ancient world, it was an indispensable tool for comfort and cleanliness, but nothing more. The twist is not just in the object’s function but in how far-removed modern understanding is from the relic’s original, ordinary purpose. The wanderer realizes that the relic was not revered because of its combat prowess or strategic importance, but because it was simply part of a long-lost civilization’s routine comfort. What was once mundane now seems extraordinary because of its sheer age and rarity. This shift in perspective adds humor and commentary on how history can distort and glorify things. The object might become a coveted piece for collectors and scholars, not for any dangerous power, but as a historical curiosity-a reminder that not all relics have grandiose or combative origins. It opens the possibility that many other “sacred” artifacts might also be everyday items, misinterpreted by those too far removed from the time they were created.
      The idea could be extended to reveal an entire collection of mundane relics. One might be a cooking utensil that magically heats food without fire or a cleaning stone that absorbs dust from surfaces. In this world, the line between the mythical and the mundane is blurred, showing how even the most routine aspects of life can gain mystique over time.

    Years ago...no, decades ago, I guess...I was writing a series of stories based loosely on some recurring dreams & dream themes. When I see your videos, I'm reminded of those old, now abandoned tales. My stories were set in a vast, semi-abandoned structure that looked sort of like a Mediterranean hotel or apartment building from the 1890s or maybe 1920s, though it often blended with other types of structures. Various people were lost within it, sometimes trying to make little communities or what have you. The ocean played an important role, and the structure was often built out over salty water.
    Tonally, my stories were very different, but there was a similar sense of nostalgic ruin about things. I think my stories had a more "pulpy" vibe, though. Like, the protagonist of one was a WWI pilot who got lost in a storm and ended up there, and at one point, he was on the run from some clockwork critters.
    Anyway. Really enjoying this project. And I appreciate having some old memories brought to the surface. Maybe I should dig through the stacks of old papers and see if I can find some drafts. Dust off the ol' brain and write something.

      I'm reminded of _Mythago Wood_ by Robert Holdstock. It's about a small piece of ancient woodland which is much bigger on the inside, and is populated by figures from forgotten myths. It's set in the years after WW2. The further in you go, the further into the past you go, all the way back to the Ice Age. I was particularly reminded of it by the OP's mention of a pilot: the protagonist is accompanied by a pilot, who recognised the wood for what it is after a painful encounter with a similar wood in Belgium in the war. The protagonist is hunting for his brother for plot reasons, the pilot hopes to find a shining city which will cure his scars.

    Well, stolen idea but it was a hit in my DnD campaign: a Soul Lantern. It's a lantern that, when grabbed, traps the user's soul in the lantern. They can only see from within the lantern, but they still can control their body - so their movements are disoriented since they're viewing themselves from the outside. From within the lantern, their vision is enhanced and they can see the true forms of all things, and even see guidance to things they seek. However, their soul becomes like a flame, and their soul perishes if the lantern's flame is doused in water.
