so..carl has 45 chrs... but he has a NORMAL chr 13 /chr 14/ AND he has a stuck on chr... so why is he 45 chrs? shoudlnt it be 46 PLUS 1 = 47 chrs ???

carl was normal with 46 chromosome, but then he had a robertsonian translocation (short arms of acrocentric chromosomes disappeared and the 2 long arm joined), now that the 13 and 14 joined together, he has 1 less chromosome
or
carl is supposed to have 2 of each chromosome to have 46, but he only has one 13, one 14, and one 13 and 14 fusion
