As a Doctor Who fan since the 1970's the end of this episode was the most exciting 15 minutes in the entirety of New Who! Those of us familiar with the Master knew exactly which Time Lord it was going to be!
I love how they executed the fob watch twist! Setting it up earlier in the series to bring it back for the master reveal, the Face of Boe's last words spelling out Yana's name while also telling the doctor he wan't the last of the time lords. This is one of my favourite twists the show pulls
Plus the fact the professor is wearing a doctors outfit basically with the chain on it and no one noticed, the episode itself had a perception filter on it for us the audience
7:44 The nice jolly music that plays around the Professor all throughout the episode at various points is the Gallifrey theme. I like how before the big reveal the soundtrack is basically saying ‘look! Look! he’s from gallifrey’ 😂
The music is always great and a lot of time foreshadows loads. When the sphere is on screen in s2 finale before daleks come out, the dalek theme is playing. It’s great and sometimes the music is so iconic that it IS the reveal! :)
Ah yes! The second half of Series 3… Chefs kiss. I was only 11 when this aired and didn’t realise just who THAT was. But my dad watched DW growing up so I knew by his reaction it was important. Knowing what it means now, this was an absolutely fantastic reveal. Derek Jacobi absolutely nailed it.
I've always wished Jacobi got to hang around a little longer. Simm is great, but man... Derek Jacobi feels like he's channeling some of that Anthony Hopkins energy.
I do really like how this episode connects to Torchwood. Hell, even the music that plays when Jack is running to the Tardis at the start is a remix of the Torchwood theme
"Utopia" was another expertly-directed episode by Graeme Harper, the only person to have directed both Classic and Modern Who. He started in the Troughton era as a Floor Manager, working his way up the ranks to become a respected and successful director.
I cannot even put into words what it felt like to watch this live if you knew classic Who. Tennant's performance is incredible. The Doctor hears there's another Time Lord alive and he knows - he just knows - that if one more of his race survives then it has to be The Master. Nobody else could possibly have survived, and here he is. I was so hyped for the whole week.
The music in this episode, especially the one titled “This Is Gallifrey: Our Childhood. Our Home” is my favourite piece of music in any TV show. Murray Gold’s stuff just speaks to me
“Something is going to go horribly wrong” epic foreshadowing lol. One of the best endings to an episode ever, love that you got emotional during The Doctor and Jack’s conversation about Rose💚
I get emotional pretty much anytime Rose is brought up or makes an appearance. I know a lot of people have issues with her (and she certainly has flaws), but I see a lot of myself in her and she was my first companion. So, she'll always have a special place in my heart.
The last 14 minutes of this story for me is the best thing modern who has ever done, its incredible. The drama, the tension and the acting is perfect and for a classic fan like me it was amazing to see the Master return and it being done so well. When yana is looking at the watch you can hear a classic Masters chuckle and then audio from one of the other previous Master's. And Derek Jacobi's acting is incredible. Going from a kind good hearted man to an evil monster within seconds is so well done. I wish he had been the Master for longer to be honest as he kind of represents the classic series Master which I prefer. Simm does a great job though.
Welcome to one of the biggest cliffhangers the show ever had. I remember watching this as a kid, knowing who the Master was from reading stuff online, and seeing that reveal at the end... it was like a brick to the back of the head, it completely blew me away.
You've seen how this pans out so you must be aware that the Master is the Doctor's nemesis. He is the Moriarty to the doctors Sherlock Holmes. The maniacal mirror image.

@robertmartin9029 I appreciate you trying to help me avoid spoilers! The others are correct, though. I just wrapped up series 9 over on Patreon. However, I haven't seen Sherlock Holmes and will likely be reacting to it at some point (and don't know anything about than the names Sherlock Holmes and Watson.. not even sure if that that's a first or last name. lol) So, it was a little bit of an inadvertent spoiler for that.
@@BritanyBinges oops! In my defence though, Sherlock Holmes was written about 20 years after Abraham Lincoln was shot, so.... that info has been around for a little while now.
Every once in a while, I freak out my son by saying "HOOOO-MAHHHHHHNNNNNS!" ... There were internet rumours about the big bad of series 3 being The Master, that Mister Saxon was an anagram for Master No Six. But the entire twist with the fob watch was so good, the Doctor talking with Martha and being actually scared that Yana could see the watch. It was probably the first time I'd been thrilled by the show since the dialogue between the Satellite 5 Controller and the Doctor - my masters in the dark spaces.
By 'everything's changed', the Doctor means that since the last time he met the Master, the Time War has happened and they're the only two Time Lords left.
My favourite episode of Doctor Who ever, I just love the setting, the music, the reveal of The Master and most of all Captain Jack. I mean jumping on the TARDIS how badass, also The Doctor talking to Jack in the radiation room still gives me chills every time
23:30 not sure if it is because he's unhappy or if it is just the weight of being the leader in a serious situation. We see the doctor in both a light-hearted happy mode and a serious mode as well depending on what he is dealing with.

Great reaction to what is easily one of my favorite episodes. I didn't know Jack was coming back, so that was such a fun surprise. This was an outstanding episode let down a little by the next one (IMO) and ranks in my top 5 shows of Nuwho along with “Blink” & “Hell Bent” which I see you are just watching & I hope you like it as much as I did. Love your reactions and REALLY looking forward to eventually watching you watch “He’ll Bent”
So glad you're loving the reactions! I actually released Hell Bent over on Patreon last week. I loved it. I was completely shocked to see Clara again after watching Face the Raven (well, and Heaven Sent).
I watched Torchwood years ago. I don't remember how Jack changed. But it would make sense that he would be more serious without the Doctor. With him everything is a thrilling adventure that you know will turn out well... 99% of the time... For the main characters. When Jack is the head of Torchwood he has all this weight, and all this time on him.
The "skies are made of diamonds" dialogue felt a bit stilted, because the kid wasn't an actor. It wasn't intentionally sinister, the kid just won a competition to be in an episode. But it worked out well when the crew worked that line delivery into the script later on.
It’s funny that Doctor applied to PhDs long before they applied to medical professionals. So a Doctor of everything implies he has degrees in everything. Another thing is that a Master’s is also an academic degree. So their names implies that the Doctor is more advanced than the Master, degree wise.
I know I feel whenever he (or, she, in the case of Missy) randomly pops back up in NuWho. I can't imagine if I had originally known him from Classic Who.
The second half of this episode is sooooo good! One or the best in modern era who! Been looking forward to this reaction, altho i feel you probably have not met the master yet in classic who? Growing up watching the classic series (on vhs of course) this was so exciting to have the master return!!
Eventually at least the pilot will and we'll have to see how well it does to know if it will be worth bringing the entire show to the channel. So, basically, I'll give it a chance and it will depend on the viewer response.
I clearly remember after watching this episode when it was first broadcast, i tweeted, "That was a masterful episode." I got berated by a friend as it seems I did a bit of a spoiler for her 😅 Which was fair...
"Is that what happens, you just get left behind?" "Not if you're blonde." "Oh, she was blonde. What a surprise!" 🤣 And did you notice _how_ Jack said "fantastic" while talking to Ten? You can tell Nine had a big impact on him.
I actually just watched Hell Bent last week so it's still pretty fresh in my mind and I was absolutely thinking about 12's scene with Me/Ashildr. Also, comparing his views on Jack to his views on here is pretty interesting.
I know Classic Who is slowly making it's way onto RUclips but do you plan to post your reactions to Torchwood and Sarah Jane at all? I don't have Patreon soo- if not that's fine lol, just wanna know whether to look forward to it or not
I'll eventually do the same with both Torchwood and SJA that I do with every "new" show to the channel. I'll post the pilot episode as part of my pilot reaction series. Then, I'll use the data (number of views, likes, comments, etc.) and the feedback from viewers to gauge whether or not it seems like it would be worth it from a time/amount of work standpoint to bring the full series to the channel. Given that the vast majority of my audience is here for Doctor Who, it's likely they'll perform well enough to make it to a full series on here.
I know you are well ahead now, but from the perspective of this episode, I guess you're just gonna have to watch the next episode to find out the answers to your questions 😀
One of my Patreon members/moderators who was on a tier where the members get to pick specific things for me to react to had me the first episode of I, Claudius. It was ... interesting. lol

Timelords were neutral, officially. There were just a few good and bad bouncing around the Universe. Sadly The Rani has some copyright issue or something so she can never appear in Nu-Who, The Master's one ofthe Doctor's top 3 villains. The Daleks, The Cybermen and The Master.

It's so hard to explain the Master without referencing anything prior, or anything to come. The easiest way is just to say he's the Doctor if the Doctor was evil / insane.
I never watched Torchwood but Im pretty sure it wasnt really a necessity for this episode. Plus its a nice surprise for people who havent watched Torchwood for Jack to come back. Do you think having watched Torchwood beforehand was beneficial for this episode for you?
@jxsh03 I don't think it was necessary, but it did build up the excitement for this episode for me. Plus, there are a few things in this episode that are callbacks to things in Torchwood beside just having Jack there. I actually really enjoyed Torchwood... more so than most others from the information I gathered from my Patrons as I was going through it.
@obiwankenobi687 I was *really* glad I had already seen series 3 of Torchwood before starting Capaldi's era on Doctor Who. His acting impressed me in Torchwood, so it made me excited to see him as the Doctor.
Series 8... Ok... No spoilers... So - I really wish that they had left Derek in the role. I do love Sims' Master particularly *not* his first run at it... He really knocks it out of the park later... But - Derek Jacobi was great, and could have given so much more. Watching this for the first time, I don't recall if we the audience were meant to know the Master was returning or not... but because of the delays, I certainly knew going in. It's hard for me to watch something like this subjectively because I know the characters, so it's great being able to watch someone who has no idea who the Master is. RTD did do a great job at reintroducing him. As for the Doctor finding a dick of a Time Lord... not every Time Lord is a dick... but... [checks your Classic Who feed] Ok. Well... I'll just say - it's always fun. :)
So, I actually meant to say series 9. That's what I've seen through of NuWho. For Classic Who, I just started the third story of the 7th season. I also COMPLETELY agree with you about Sims' portrayal of the Master. I didn't super care for the character this time around, but I found him MUCH more fascinating the second time around.
@@BritanyBinges Ah, Classic S7 - that's a tough season... amazing new Doctor though, and the final story is one of my absolute faves. And you've met Missy! Had my doubts, but - amazing! So glad you're loving the reactions! I actually released Hell Bent over on Patreon last week. I loved it. I was completely shocked to see Clara again after watching Face the Raven (well, and Heaven Sent).
Yes The Master is from Classic Who. Big BIG B-I-G, recurring BIG! I'm saying nothing more because you asked.
Most Time Lords in general are pompous cosmic jerks. But the Master is one of the few that are evil and maniacal.
So their names implies that the Doctor is more advanced than the Master, degree wise.
aaah one of my all time favourites, this episode is just pure hype
Derek Jocobi. The best Master in such a short amount of screen time.
You already worked out he's a classic who villain. Now imagine how the fans felt after this ep ;)
Is Torchwood coming to RUclips eventually?
Eventually at least the pilot will and we'll have to see how well it does to know if it will be worth bringing the entire show to the channel. So, basically, I'll give it a chance and it will depend on the viewer response.
100 trillion years into the future and there's still some ginger kid with a Scottish accent. Nice to know we still persist.
Saying that the adorable kid saying "The sky is made of diamonds." needs to have a purpose made me feel a bit nauseous.
I clearly remember after watching this episode when it was first broadcast, i tweeted, "That was a masterful episode." I got berated by a friend as it seems I did a bit of a spoiler for her 😅
Which was fair...
That "fantastic" from Jack got me.
"Is that what happens, you just get left behind?"
"Not if you're blonde."
"Oh, she was blonde. What a surprise!" 🤣
And did you notice _how_ Jack said "fantastic" while talking to Ten? You can tell Nine had a big impact on him.
It's been a while since I edited this (and even longer since I recorded it), but I don't think I did pick up on that. That's a nice touch. :)
What i did not know was that he was gonna be a dick. 😂
Another favorite of mine in this season -- the second half, imo, better than the first.
Now you having seen all of Series 9, it's so interesting how Hell Bent's and this episode's takes on immortality compare
I actually just watched Hell Bent last week so it's still pretty fresh in my mind and I was absolutely thinking about 12's scene with Me/Ashildr. Also, comparing his views on Jack to his views on here is pretty interesting.
I have been waiting for this since you started series 3, I adore this reveal and return of a classic character (that i never got to see)
15:17 😔😮💨🙄 15:28 🙄🙄😮💨 15:54 😂😂😂
There is some more meat to the Doctor and The Master's back story in the next episode so don't worry.
P.S. I love how your tissues come out just at the mere mention of Rose :)
I love watching your doctor who reactions it reminds me how I felt he first watching this when it aired
Aww, thank you so much! I feel the same way when I watch other reactors reacting to some of my favorite shows. :)
Dereck Jacobi...one of my favorite actor I know him best as the Roman Emperor Claudius.
One of my Patreon members/moderators who was on a tier where the members get to pick specific things for me to react to had me the first episode of I, Claudius. It was ... interesting. lol
build up to the finale...and WOW Jack is back and callbacks galore including the big bad from the classics....the MASTER fantastic reaction been looking forward to this one...
So glad you enjoyed the reaction! :)
This was such a terrific ep. I've loved Jackobi in everything I've seen him do. Most of all, Sim's take on the Master was genius. I'd say more but...spoilers.
I actually just wrapped up series 9 over on Patreon so, I'm on the Missy version of the Master now. So, feel free to share your thoughts on this version of him. :)
@@BritanyBinges Even though you're ahead of this point, my philosophy is to avoid future spoilers out of respect to the viewers who might be watching the series for the 1st time alongside your reactions. I've done this sometimes with other shows. It's a fun way to follow a show that's new to you, but it always sucks to see a spoiler in the comments section.
“The Dick” would be a better name for him than “The Master”.
I hope you continue with Classic 😊 It really gets overlooked
I have continued! :) I'm currently in season seven over on Patreon.
@@BritanyBinges that is amazing!! You got like 20 seasons more or less to go. And after that you got Big Finish for even more adventures.
@@DamnQuiltyI've actually already started Big Finish! :) I missed 9, so I've started with him. I got his first box set of Adventures that Christopher Eccelstone narrated. After I finished Jamie's time on Classic, I knew I was going to miss him as well and I was wondering what happened to him afterward. So, when I found out there was a story about that (The Glorious Revolution), I got it immediately. lol I haven't listened to it yet, though.
@@BritanyBinges this keeps getting better and better. that is so cool 😎.
My mind was broke too after watching this the first time but I might have had a leg up on you since I was a Classic Who watcher. I had a feeling I knew who this was but this episode was still shocking.
one of my fav episodes, were v past n present colide in a grand way, so well writen n acted, reintruducing v master as prob v drs bigest foe, n him 'hiding in plain site' n martha stumbling upon it n v drs fearful reaction.
It's the mister master😂
Just because the episodes are shown at the same time doesn't mean Jack changed. The event could have happened at a totally different time.
Looking forward to the next episode....have you been paying attention to little things seen in the background through this season?.....
The surprise when you get three parts hehehe
Yeah, it didn't even occur to me at the time that this would actually be the start of the finale story. lol
yes, the master is in classic who. c:
19:03 = Priceless
Completely stunned. 😂
You're lucky, you get to watch the next episode whenever you want to. We have to wait another week to see your reaction to it. 😢
not sure if you ever watched Outlander!! but the little boy that says , the sky is made of Diamonds is ian from that show, he was just a we lit lun in doctor who
WHAT???? That's Ian??? 🤯🤯🤯 I'm two seasons behind and it's been a little while since I watched season five, so I actually just started a rewatch two days ago so I can get caught up. :)
@@BritanyBinges yeh that is ian from outlander in an early role, and yes it has a significance that scene in a later ep , as you mentioned it
It's so hard to explain the Master without referencing anything prior, or anything to come. The easiest way is just to say he's the Doctor if the Doctor was evil / insane.
The Master is the Moriarty to the Doctor's Holmes
Well,you say two-parter.😊
I never watched Torchwood but Im pretty sure it wasnt really a necessity for this episode. Plus its a nice surprise for people who havent watched Torchwood for Jack to come back.
Do you think having watched Torchwood beforehand was beneficial for this episode for you?
Have you still not watched torchwood at all?
@@obiwankenobi687 Nope
@@jxsh03 it gets sooo good. You should hop on it. Series 3 of torchwood is one of my favorite series’s of anything in the Doctor who universe
Yes, Sims was so much better not quite so hyper. He didn't like how he was told to play the role... glad he came back to do it justice.
