    I'd like to share a little info with noobs like myself: in cold climates you will obviously have heating in your cage/ vivarium. But it is important to have the room warm when getting your hog out for petting/ handling. I thought my hog was really anti-social for our first 5 months, but now summer is starting he has become really happy and friendly! Clearly, our house, heated to 19C in winter, is too cold for him. He was fine having a footbath in warm water, but became grumpy 2 minutes after coming out of it. Headed straight for his snuggle bag asap. Would not unball for handling. But now the sun's out and the ambient temperature is over 20, he loves being held and exploring! I have never seen anyone mention this issue in countless 'grumpy hog' videos, so I'm passing it round to help others.

    As for my own cage I used to use a bin cage but felt it was too small so I upgraded to a 2x3 c&c cage. However now I'm slightly downsizing to a 4ft x 2ft custom diy cage. Sort of like a viv but the whole top is meshed. I want to try bioactive, want something that looks nicer, and something that is a bit more solid/sturdy.

    Omg thank you for saying the tank thing! 👏 I've been saying the same thing that bins hold humidity just as well if not more than tanks do. Some fish keepers even use bins. I personally have steered clear of them because of the debate but I could never understand that main concern. I also do agree there are way better options.

    Im getting my hedgehog soon and i want a critter nation. My house is almost always at 72 and i will use a heat lamp. Will these be ok for him?

    • @friendlyneighbor7221
      @friendlyneighbor7221 5 лет назад +5

      For the heat lamp situation it should be fine but keep in mind if you are keeping a hedgehog in a room with a fan or something then you might want a thermostat because the temperature is changing a lot. For example I live in florida and keep my hedgehog in my room and when I turn the fan on after a few mins I can hear the heat lamp turn on afterwards but the temperature in the cage always stays near 76-78

    • @typicalpixel8228
      @typicalpixel8228 4 года назад +3

      @@friendlyneighbor7221 Hey! I know this comment is old but perhaps you're still active to give me feedback. I'm fairly new to the hedgehog world and a bit confused. I usually like to keep my room at 70°F.
      Question #1: Do i need to put two heating lamps on either side of my Hedgehogs enclosure or is one in the center just fine?
      Question #2: Since I do keep my room at 70°F, which is very cold, would the heating lamps be enough to up the heat levels in the cage to 74-80°F?

    • @friendlyneighbor7221
      @friendlyneighbor7221 4 года назад

      Typical Pixel To answer your first question you could just have one in the center because even if the ends of the cage are 70 he shouldn’t hibernate at all! If you want to make sure you could buy a cheep thermometer and set it at the end of the cage but that’s not necessary If you have a thermostat. For question #2 a heating lamp will be perfect for that! It sounds like you are very well prepared and I’m sorry my response was so long and late! Also keep in mind I’m not a vet just going off of my having a hedgehog for over a year now so do what you want with this info 😊😊

    do you think you could ever make a video on bedding/cleaning a bedding cage for hedgehogs? i also have a midwest cage with fleece, and i noticed he still likes to burrow. he has a burrow box but still likes to try and get under the fleece lol. and he has plenty of hides, he just likes to dig up fleece, so i think it’s going to be best if i switch him over to bedding. i’ve had guinea pigs so i know what it’s like to deal with chips, but i wanted insight as to how much it costs to keep up with bedding and how much work it’ll take

I have three heat lamps under the cage so it’s hot all over the cage and not just the one side that’s hot from just the one. And I add extra blanket when playtime and I have hand warmer pad things lol and extra fleece, warm bed/hut. Is that okay? Will they still get cold? You could also use c&c grids with plxi glass on the insisde so they wont climb it with ventilation holes

    My friend used to have a hedgehog and I don't think they really researched that much before getting him, but I don't know enough about hedgehog care to say wether their care was okay.
    They kept him in one of those under bed storage bins on the bathroom floor with the floor heating on. I'm kind of doubting this was this safe? I don't think they ever really measured how warm it kept the floor, so idk how they would have known if it was alright for the hedgehog.
    They also only had a wooden hide and a (thankfully big) hamster wheel in his bin, so the hedgehog used to always climb out (the bin had very low edges so it was very easy for it to do) and wander around the bathroom floor. They kept detergents and other cleaning stuff in the under the sink cabin, so at least I would have been very concerned about it getting to them. They never bothered to get him a new bin or give him more enrichment, so they just let him do this when ever he felt like it.
    They fed him cat food with corn and rice in it and and sometimes gave him a couple superworms as a treat. To my understanding at least corn isn't really good for them (don't know about rice?) and shouldn't they have more insects?
    The hedgehog has already passed away a long time ago, and I'm not thinking of getting one (at least right now) so this isn't really important anymore, just something I've been thinking about, so if someone more experienced could let me know what they think I'd appreciate it :)

      3. You can make the cage whatever dimensions you’d like as long as they meet 4sqft minimum.
      4. You can do either! :)

    If my room only gets maybe slightly cold during the winter, should I consider a more enclosed cage rather than a wire cage so that the heat doesn't escape or is that okay? I'll still have a heating source no matter what, just wanna be sure :>
    Edit: Because my room isn't too cold at all, I just wanna be cautious

    Hey I’m thinking about getting a hedge hog and am just a little worried about the heating aspect. Im wondering if I were to buy a wire cage some what similar to yours and then decided to modify it so that that there was plastic on all three sides then a shorter set of plastic on the front would that retain enough heat but also enough ventilation?

    I use a plastic bin cage for Toad and have recently got a heat lamp for him. Unfortunately, I had to use the clamp to attach it because I was afraid the plastic would melt(it doesn't have any metal on the lid) so I had to take off the lid. My house is pretty drafty so what would you recommend to keep the heating well in my hedgie's cage

    I have a question abou heating. Where I live it's literally never cold or even chilly, it's actually pretty hot if you don't have the AC on so... do I need to have something that will make the cage a little cooler or do I need a heat setup, or do I just leave it like that?

    I never hear people talking about when a room is too hot, or how to cool it down. So I was wondering how to keep a hedgehog cool if it gets too hot? My room lacks insulation, so it can get up to 85 degrees in the summer (it’s mostly at 78 though) Also, is it okay to point a fan at a cage?

    I love watching these videos they help me a lot! But before I get a hedgehog I have a question. So my mom is making me keep my hedgehog in my room and I’m totally okay with it but my room gets really hot in the summer and the temperature would be good for the animal but not so much me so I was wondering if it’ll be okay to have an AC on while the heat lamp is on aswell? Will the heat heat up my room with a bin cage or will the AC make it so the heat won’t do much? 😕🤔

    Hey Tori! As you’re other hedgehogs grew older did they have any issues with controlling their bodily functions? Such as peeing and pooping? My hedgehog Nala is 4&1/2 and isn’t using her potty area anymore but I can’t figure out if she’s actively choosing to poop and pee everywhere (including her bed) or if she can’t control where she goes. I plan on taking her to the vet soon anyways for her check up but I was just wondering if you had experienced anything similar with your boys. Thanks.

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  5 лет назад

      I didn’t notice much of a difference with my boys but neither of them were potty trained so they were already going wherever they wanted to begin with. I’ve heard of elderly hedgehogs getting messier as they age, but I don’t have a lot of personal experience with it

    I got Finland after seeing a post of someone selling him and he was living in a small storage tub that gave him ZERO room to roam only to sleep and get in his wheel with food and water dishes in between. Made me so sick to my stomach because even though I knew NOTHING about hedgehogs, I knew his living was borderline abuse ... I bought him immediately and bought him a mansion to live in. Then turned to RUclips to Learn everything I could about how to raise him...this is how I found you....you have been such a big part of Finland and my life, I appreciate all your words of advice and helpful hints. He has thrived in my home and is very loved ...his vet said she could tell he is very loved and well cared for ... I've had him almost a year now...
    anyways thank you so much for your videos...they have been beyond helpful.

    Im getting a hedgie. My room is normally at 69 degrees. I've looked at vivariums, but the one I saw is no longer available, so I've been considering wire cages. Would a heat lamp on a wire cage be sufficient enough for the correct temperature? I know you talked about this in the video, but I just don't know anymore. Or do you have any other suggestions for cages? Thanks.
