That dog-sized spider is our good friend Shelob who will try and eat Frodo and Sam in a few thousand years! She's got some growing still to do, but orcs aren't the most nutritional meal, after all. She's still a little baby - but mom's dead. Mom tried to eat Literal Satan in this universe. Be thankful Mom is dead. Durin's suspicion of Sauron/Annatar is a nice little callback to a line of Frodo's about suspecting that a servant of Evil would "look fair, feel foul." He can't quite figure out what it is, but something is off about the whole thing to him. That is not the Dead Marshes that Isildir is traveling through. Those are created later. This is just a body in a pit. You're exactly correct, Adam. The eagle DOES NOT favor Pharazon. The Great Eagles are servants of Manwe Sulimo, the Lord of the Valar and Lord of the Winds and Airs - think Zeus in Greek mythology. That eagle was there for Miriel, who is still faithful to the Valar and Numenor's ancient friendship with the Elves. The way it was shrieking and flapping its wings as Pharazon was acclaimed was obvious anger and frustration.
Durin and Elrond being the bros of all time is my favorite thing about this show honestly. They haven't had a single scene together this season so far but they're still on the same Super Bro Wavelength about Sauron and the rings being sus
The most useful thing about Sauron posing as an angelic messenger sent from the Valar..... well he kind of is an Angelic messenger who was the chief lieutenant to a Valar. Posing as an angelic messenger is easy for an angel.
Slight spoiler alert, but Bronwyn’s actress decided to take a break from acting to dedicate herself to some humanitarian work*, which is why the character passed.
burying the lead a little bit here - she's been doing some amazing humanitarian work for her native Iran. she has even spoken in front of the UN security council since the last season was filmed!
Her Wikipedia entry says that she stepped away from the role for other reasons that weren't her activism. I'm hoping she wasn't having a bad time working on the series, because I've loved her for years.
Lore Dump 3/8: The swamp Isildur passes is most likely not the swamp Frodo, Sam, and Gollum go through. In the books, that doesn’t exist yet. Isildur is a hero in the books, but falls to the Ring in the same way Boromir does. Hopefully we see his heroics in the rest of the show. I wish the eagles in the films/show talked like they do in the books. It would keep misunderstandings like this from happening.
Based on the map we've seen in the first season there is already a swamp but primarily Isildur is nowhere near that place. In fact the spider he fought was Shelob, he's basically passed through the location where Gollum will lead the Hobbits to her lair (and in the process scouted a location for the future founding of Minas Ithil/Minas Morgul).
@@Makhiel I hadn’t thought about Minas Ithil! I have no idea why he would build it next to all the spiders, but maybe he/Gondor is the reason Shelob’s the only one there in LotR, and her kids flee north into the Greenwood.
The Numenor stuff suffers from being so disconnected but later will become really involved. If they just plopped them into it when it’s exciting, I don’t know that the impact would be as great. They have to slowly show the discontent going on there so that things make sense later, and also you know who the players are later. Reading on a pages that Numenor was this GREAT realm of men that ranked amongst the elves. And they decline over centuries for various reasons and then something big happens to cause their downfall. Survivors settle great realms of men in Middle and join the last alliance to fight against Sauron. A lot of the action and involvement in the middle earth storyline is much later after all of the events with the rings. So they’re definitely trying to sprinkle the Numenor stuff in to try and build up to the great events
Ya. To me, the 2nd age is all about the rise and fall of Numenorrrr. It's a shame this show doesn't treat their story the same way as the love story between Galadriel and Sauron. 😊
I'm guessing either the people read what they wanted to into the Eagle appearing and he was actually favoring the Queen Reagent, or otherwise he was somehow under the influence of the blonde scheming guy who is friends with Pharazon. The Eagles on Numenor are from the North part of the island where that dude's family has a lot of influence. Eagles are supposed to be semi-divine beings and therefore above corruption, but so was Sauron, so...
"But then what?" "Big. Big bear. Big bear chase. Big bear chase me." "No, that's not until The Hobbit films." Also, I had the exact same thought about why dog spiders are scarier than giant spiders, and basically had the same conclusions as Jay re: evasion and speed.
on a lark .... i cued up one of those weird not-at-all-accurate-but-fun translation sites to see what your LOTR names would be; there were a few options but i like Adarion [Adam] & Jorath [Jay]. and now, on to the show!
2:27 Jay, that's not Tolkien, that's his best friend. 2:35 It's not often that I get uncomfortable watching things, I famously watched the gruesome scenes from Bones while eating food that looked kinda similar. but this scene, these spiders... yikes! 4:42 I had forgotten how much I like this score. 6:33 Why are they humanizing the orcs? they're supposed to be monsters. 9:47 No, that's much later. this is just the show using 'member berries to make you like it. 11:17 oh, there goes my theory of a romance... kinda. 12:00 Cool! 13:46 Now that's the most elaborate and eloquent "You're not my dad" I've heard. I LOVE it! 15:19 OH! I see... 15:47 At first I thought it was the trolls, but that wouldn't make sense to kill their allies, but then I heard the creaking! cool! 16:44 this looks good 17:48 That is exactly it. for all the Dwarven and Human rings, Sauron was very hands on and could manipulate the crafting, connecting them to himself and the one ring.
This should have probably been a longer episode especially for the Numenor storyline. It, and probably the Rhun one with Nori and The Stranger, is probably the most disconnected for now. Though Numenor becomes more relevant after this season.
In both seasons so far I am really enjoying how they are adapting the lore from the books and being able yo make the audience still not quite 100% sure who some of these more unknown/mysterious characters will end up becoming thereby adding to the suspense and entertainment value.
Yeah, that was confusing that Bronwyn (love interest for Arondir and mother of the evil teen) was suddenly dead, since at the end of the first season, she was recovering and was leading her people to Pelargir. But as someone else noted, the actress (Nazanin Boniadi) decided not to return for the 2nd season, and the showrunners -- who had initially planned for her story to continue -- honored her decision and killed off the character. Btw, if you want to read some crazy stuff, Google Nazanin Boniadi + Tom Cruise. She had joined Scientology (which she has since left), and eventually she was groomed to be Cruise's next wife. But at some point, after that fell through, the "church" forced her into seclusion and menial labor for several months. Oo-wee, that cult is more evil than Sauron. Anyway, she's out of all that mess now, thank goodness.
This episode reminded me to ask, how do you gentlemen feel about an Arachnophobia watch along? Or even a future Fix It whence you write your own sequel. Cant imagine why Rings of Power would have inspired that thought lol.
Enjoying this show/season. Too many people are too precious when it comes to books, especially with lore as deep at this. Just watch and enjoy or switch off it it annoys you, nerds! 🙂
The only thing I didn't like was the Orc baby. I"m not interested in feeling bad for any orc dying. I mean, who's having sex with that? I hope that is nobody's ex.
I tried. I really did, but every episode I ended up falling asleep. These characters are uninteresting, and I feel no endearment towards them. I don't mind slow paced entertainment, but in order to implement a slow pace, you have to keep your audience engaged, and this show is at best, subpar in that implementation. I will no longer watch this mediocrity (and that's being generous), and good luck to everyone who wants to keep supporting an uncompelling and monotonous slog of a show. Love you, pReview'd. I look forward to your other reactions.
I'm in this episode :) I'm the dwarf taking the scroll from the King! Fun times
Congrats!
That’s awesome!

She was mortally wounded in the finale?

Isildur at the dirty swamp/pond thing made me think, "what in the neverending story is this?"

I rate this 1/1 Subtle Spell.
Sauron definitely used his Sorcery Points to cast a spell on that Mithril with no Verbal or Somatic components

My guess is that the eagle chose that guy due to him giving massive Prince Vultan vibes.
