I agree. It's something that should be discussed more!

I invest in what i can control. I make no investment beyond that, and anything that comes from that 'beyond' is an accident and a 'Meh'. I have no control over the responses of other individuals - over their subjectivity - so while it may interest me, it's irrelevant too. I have no control over whether or not people choose to invest in me - in the crudest sense, to offer me payment, perhaps - so monetization is not something i'm concerned with as far as my photography is concerned: it doesn't affect what i am interested in and inclined to shoot. My creativity, such as it is, is on par with my intellect in terms of its fundamental importance to my sense of being a discrete individual - i don't jeopardize either of those aspects of myself by surrendering their power to things i can't control (ie: the vagaries and whimsy of other people). There's a valuable lesson that i learned on a journey in International sport that took me to Olympic Games and to winning a World Championship - focus on the process... just perfecting the performance, and not on some fantasy future outcome. If you're making images, just try to make the best images you can and do it subject to your version of what constitutes 'best' (van Gogh did this in painting and, while starving in life, he turned out ok in the aftermath). Photography is essentially about 'The World' and gives tangible expression to our interest in it. Keep that front and centre - the World is far more than merely chasing 'Likes' and 'Lucre'. Relevant video - plenty of us in photography with the potential to crash and burn, or a history of doing same. Have a great day, Colton - always good to have you on screen. Cheers.

Wise words from the mouth of the world champion in an unnamed competition (we'll get the name later!) That's really cool! Congrats on the W! I agree with your statement there. I find that in a capitalist society (or at least the one I'm in) there can be a lot of pressure (and encouragement) to monetize hobbies. I think there are a lot of cases where that can be a great thing to do, but even more where all you end up doing is ruining the hobby. Sometimes it's good to have a hobby just for passions sake. Sometimes its about making art just for your own enjoyment. Sounds like you have a decent grasp of your own goals in photography and that's important! Or maybe you're just putting on a show to throw us off your trail while you actually pursue a second world championship!!! This time the photography world championship! *gasps*.
