Does the 2024 Dark Horse Mustang really make 500HP? | Results Compared to a 2024 Mustang GT

- By now, there's a lot of info out there on the Internet of the 2024 Dark Horse Mustang. It's good that other folks have these cars and perform similar tests that way on-lookers and potential buyers have as much information as they can get.
Sykora Family Ford in West, Texas gave us a call and let us know they finally received a Dark Horse and asked if we wanted to check it out. Of course, our first question was, "Does it have a manual transmission?". Luckily, this car has the Tremec TR3160 6-speed manual gearbox.
We've seen a few Dark Horses in person, but haven't had the opportunity to drive one or spend time with the car.
In this video, we dyno the 2024 Dark Horse Mustang, talk about the results and the car, and then compare the results to a 2024 Mustang GT with an automatic 10R80 transmission. We were surprised to say the least which brings up the question, "Does the 2024 Dark Horse really make 500HP at the flywheel?". Let us know what you think. Thanks for watching!

I miss the SVT Cobra days, I feel like the jump in price from Gt to Shelby or Dark horse etc is waaay too much. Why can't they just bring back a regular SVT Cobra, take a GT Mustang plop the supercharger on it and some snake badges and minor tweaks and sell it for like only $12,000 ish more than a GT. Something with a blend of uniqueness and affordability.
I own an 04 SVT Cobra terminator w/4900mis. I'm orig owner! Ordering a new '24 Mustang GT 5.0L next mo. -Ohio
@@sycomantz Absolutely 💯 Well said. Will last longer than any BMW as well. -Ohio
Definitely 99 cobra vibes with HP rating.
Yeah, the SVT Cobra Coupe Was around 35K in 2002 and now 70 in these Times for the same performance?
Not to mention, I still see Gen 3 10R80 GT's beating these all Day! 70k My ass!
@@markbreaux6613dark horse is a track monster not a drag car. Take your 10r80 around the track and see it it can keep up with this car. It beat the gt350, gt500, mach 1, camaro zl1 1le around the track.
@@Jimmyxsx
I have zero doubt about a 10R80 keeping up son, It's all over the internet In proving THAT THEY CAN!
You can pay $70,000 for barely in the realm of "Good" performance, Not l.
@@markbreaux6613 lunatic lol a GT 1080r will get destroyed around the track. If a gt500 with 750hp couldnt bet this car let alone the 10r80 Gt😆🤣
@@Jimmyxsx Don't get me wrong, I love the Dark Horse, but for $77,000 - $80,000 (mark up) for a track pack, I would rather get an M4 Competition. BMW gives better incentives on M cars so you can get one close to a loaded Dark Horse with the track pack. You also get a better interior in the BMW and AWD that can be disabled. 11.0 stock in the 1/4 mile. And surprisingly, BMW's reliability is always top 10 since 2019, 3rd in 2022 Consumer Report. Ford is lower mid pack. I've seen carbon edition DH for $90,000+ in the Boston area. The M4 feels like a $80-90k car inside, the Mustang doesn't. You can also get an M2 for a base price $64k. You can say it's faster on the track than so and so, but majority of us won't be able to run those lap times. Driver's margin of error is higher on a RWD DH than an AWD M car.

Not impressed at all for the price broke in or not.
It’s crazy, those 19” wheels look like 17” on that car.
Nice job Landan
Great video👌 Very cool car. The painted stripes look very good. Much better than vinyl. I know you played with the display options so I’ll ask, is the Fox Body gauge option pretty convincing?
Yeah, the cluster stuff is pretty cool. Checkout the video below. -Landan

No
Junk numbers for the price 😂
Yet lap times say the opposite, it beat the GT350, GT500, Mach1 and Camaro ZL1 1Le around the track.
@@Jimmyxsxon a tiny goofy ass track yes. I'm assuming you're using throttle houses track numbers just like most mustang fan boys are doing. On a nurgburging or any other big track it gets absolutely demolished by higher horse power cars. If you throw a lotus on the same track it would destroy this dark horse too.
@@HtriZzy_ excuses😂😆🤣
@@Jimmyxsx that's all you have as a rebuttal? Truth hurts doesn't it? Itlaionstallion tried to argue that same track time and got demolished in the comments. Everyone is shit talking and is disappointed in the dyno numbers. Imagine hyping up a car for years and charging damn near 100k for a MUSTANG. Not even Shelby, just for it to put up worse/same numbers as the previous gen s550. YIKES
@@HtriZzy_ its not a rebuttal its a fact with video proof as well. Dark horse beat the mach 1, camaro 1le, gt500 and pretty much all of its competitors around the track lol you can argue all u want but the numbers are out there and dark horse beat all those cars.
The Dark Horse has the engine rods from the Shelby GT 500. It has the potential to handle more power and greater high-performance driving compared to the GT coyote. Also, the Dark Horse has upgraded; transmission, suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires which make the car handle as well as the S550 Shelby GT 350 R on an autocross or cuircuit race track.
A Member of my Mustang Club had a Dark Horse this past Fall already. He said the car is locked from full power and rpm until you drive it like 1000 miles and get it broke in. Might have to revisit the Dyno pulls once it's broke in.
I don't pay 70,000 for 420 hp not
Nice car ! I would definitely buy one if it wasn't priced so ridiculously.
Love this car! Kudos Ford! 💯
My gt 500 made 440 rear wheel HP it's a 2008 stock 6 speed. 416? Sounds weak to me
Your SUPERCHARGED gt500 with a 5.4 made 20 more HP than a new NA 5.0 …. 😂
Yea its sad the your pathetic Supercharged 5.4 only makes 24hp more than a N/A 5.0!
The 2008 looks way better than the 2024. I’ll take a supercharger whine over NA.
Haters😂
Awesome video, great looking, awesome car!
I think these are power limited until 1000 miles and I have heard the rev limiter is a little aggressive...maybe the buyer will let you do a few pulls after they hit the miles
Any chance we can get a Mach 1 Dyno’d? I just checked out the Bullitt video and now I’m wondering if gear ratio would make any difference on the dyno
I thinking same thing 🇺🇸💪🏼🐎
Here on YT, the channel TruckandRoll dynoed his Mach 1 with the Tremec 6-speed and it made 441 HP and 390 TQ at the wheels (SAE). I've never tested my own Mach 1, which also has the Tremec, but considering Ford claims 480 HP and 420 TQ at the crank, I feel like those numbers at the wheels are legit, assuming a 10% loss from the manual transmission.
I believe in the TR3160 1:1 is in 5th. not 4th like mt82d4
2016 GT350 looking real good right now!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why sugarcoated. This Mustang doesn't make 500HP is a lie. Maybe, they should talk about how cool is to drive the car. like me driving my 2001 Mustang Bullitt with 239K miles and maybe making 99HP. But hell is a lot of fun to drive it like I stole it.
500hp is crank horsepower. Pretty much every car advertises hp that way
Not saying I like the car but people don’t understand the distinction between wheel horse power and crank horse power. Ford claimed 500 crank not wheel. They provided it. 416/.8 = 520 Hp give or take about 20hp to the crank.
That's not how you do the math...500hp*.85 (15% drivetrain loss) is 426 wheel hp.
The math works both ways...but 20% drivetrain loss is old school.
Modern vehicle's drivetrain losses are @ 15%.
BTW: The 10 speed auto has very low losses.
Why r they pushing it at 50k miles ?
Rather have a Mach 1
Me too. -Landan
No doubt. Looks way better too, especially with the handling pack.
🔥🔥🔥
Hey buddy I hate to spoil your party but I got a 06 Mustang GT 3 valve that makes 540 to the wheels with a Paxton Novi 2200 breenspeed package😅
The Dark Horse is a naturally aspirated V8. Not boosted. The comparison is apples to oranges.
I hope so it's 20 years newer almost
I'm a Mustang guy but....
1: Why did Ford make the new Mustang look like the discontinued Crapmaro?
Chevy guys aren't going to start buying Mustangs.
2: $70 Large for a Mustang ...NO
3: $5,500 for stripes...lol
4: Less HP & TRQ than the GT model!?
5: Those HUGE Tesla display screens are a deal killer.
(Along with the ricockulous price)
Used MACH 1 in fighter jet grey...all the way!!
17% drivetrain loss is a lot. I don't own a Mustang, but I do love the look of the S650, especially in Dark Horse trim. Ford's not being honest about their numbers because there's no way a modern sports car would lose 17%.
Motor Trend dyno a Scatpack and it made 434rwhp, rated at 485hp, 10.5% loss. A Mazda3 hatchback dyno 169whp, rated at 186hp. That's 9% drivetrain loss. 2019 BMW M2 Competition 381rwhp, rated at 405, 6% loss, but we all know BMW lie about their numbers to pay less HP taxes, it's actually around 440hp.
Literally was thinking to myself for a second, why the heck they got a Camaro on the dyno, this is supposed to be about the Dark 🐎 um..........
So a 5.0 GT PP is just fine.
Stripes 👀
You have to be a millionaire to buy one of these Dark Horse Mustangs.
Why was the Dark Horse dynoed in 4th gear when 5th is the 1:1? Also, WTF is wrong with Ford that the car has a redline indicated at 7,500 RPM, but the manual cars are actually limited to 7,250 (or below, as in this video)?!? It's ridiculous, especially considering they're digital gauges and this can be easily corrected with an OTA software update!
I had seen in other videos where they had run them in 4th because they hit the factory speed limiter in 5th which stops the run short.
Yeah, none of these cars have been dynoed in their 1:1 gears because of a speed limiter, which is why I don't put much stock in the dyno videos. It'll be a long while before we'll know what any of them actually make
Doesn’t matter, the GT’s made more power and they were dyno’d the same exact way. 500 HP BS!!
Low hp and tq #’s for a top of the line 2024 Mustang. You guys have had a supercharged Foxbody that put out 430 hp and 408 torque. That is with a smaller displacement engine that was designed over 60 years ago.
A stock internal 4.6 2v with a supercharger makes similar horsepower to this dark horse as well 😂
302 vs 307? It wasn't that much smaller.
@@BeardedForever Correct 5 cubes.
Thise are disappointing dyno numbers but perhaps the runs being done in 4th gear explains why. Other Dark Horses have put down 440-445rwhp & 388-380rwtq in 5th so Ford's 500hp claim is definitely legit.
I never understood why Ford didn't set the rev limiter at 7500rpm 'cause the engine can definitely take it. The DH also needs to shed 500lb in weight.
Likely a combination of old new fuel and reserved timing until break in is done. Something about 500 miles set from the factory according to my old service manager. I would expect higher numbers by a 1000 miles..but, I have been wrong before 🤔 not often but the divorce says a lot 😂
Yep most modern performance cars have HP/RPM limits in the software until certain miles are accumulated for engine break in.
@@Turbo4Joe363 No, they don't.
The dark horse is expensive when fully loaded with options ill spend 55000 on a mustang GT before i spend the same buying a v6 charger or Challenger for the same price V8 wins all day
Then you took back to the dealership and they sold it to a customer and never told them it was beat up on a dyno with 50 miles on it 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
A lot of fluff for too much $$$. Not impressed. My '03 Mach 1 is cooler.
Personally I would rather spend the 70k on a 03-04 cobra.
U are all so internet persuaded. It's about Power Range. Within certain driving conditions the torque very well could get you 500 horse. Maybe in-between shifting certain gears the boost unlocks to give it full power. That's how cars work. Withing gear ratios and speeds.
Speak English please...
Still using a pick up? Why boat not just use the gear ratio. So much easier
The saving grace of the Dark Horse is the Tremec.
For the price there is no grace…
So Ford lied about the rating?
One is wheel and one is crank.
No way that loss is 85 HP. They lied or that drivetrain is junk!
15% loss. That translates to about 75-85 HP loss through the drivetrain.@@TNitroH
Jeez,
Guys,
The engine only had 50 miles on it.
Most new engines have HP & RPM related limits in the software until fully broken in.
70k for 416hp..yikes
He’s disappointed lol
Get a GT350 for the crazy high prices of a Dark Horse. Just crazy prices Ford wants for the Dark Horse. Not worth it at all
My gen 1 coyote makes more torque than the gen 4 coyote
Just modified it. Put a TT or Whipple supercharger make 800whp or procharger it make 700+hp
Who has modding money after dropping 70 LARGE on a Mustang!?
420 was at wheels ford rates at engine
it might make 500 if you mess with it..but no
not 500 off the showroom
floor.
No tunes are available so you can’t mess with it.
More proof these Darkhorses are duds. 70k+ no thanks
Big oof. -FoxBody Owners
For sure that's not a real German 500hp, but overrated horsepower numbers from Ford. For BMW-like prices Ford is now charging, that is very disappointing.
Love the content, not the car. Im a huge mustang guy, but after the 2015 model, I kinda lost interest.
There are better cars out there that make the claimed HP and better. It's not a V8, but it's a manual rwd car. 2023 BMW M2, known for making 440-480whp bone stock, the Nissan Z, also offered in a manual; the Supra Turbo that's also offered in a manual. And with the insane Mustang prices with options, I've started looking at BMW M2's. Better performance, better build quality, better materials, and a better performance car.
Before people start bitching about repair costs - it'll be a car I wouldn't tune. I wouldn't need to. BMW sorted out the car. I'll purchase one with an extended warranty that will give me peace of mind. 😊
We'll see how well this comment ages.
@@BeardedForever I own a Mustang. I've had 2 S550 Performance Packs. My current one is a PP2. I've also owned 2 Camaro 1les, 300zx twin turbos, 350z track model, etc.
I'm just saying that Ford is really overcharging for a glorified Mustang GT. In 2021, you could get a GT500 supercharged with a bespoke engine for 73k with a DCT.
The current Darkhorse is a marketing play. Just like the Mach 1 is. People will talk about the transmission, but that same transmission is offered in every Camaro SS manual. So again, nothing special.
Just 3 years ago you could buy a PP2 Fully loaded for low 40s with discounts. All PP2s are handling packages. You can't tell me a new Darkhorse Handling Package is 72k with Magride and Recaros. It's the same car with styling updates and tablets for screens. Horsepower I also think is overrated.
But anyways, people can spend money on what they want, but if I'm paying over 60k for a sports car, it better have the advertised horsepower and forced induction.
A used Zl1 is finally back in the 50s for 650hp and a real chassis. I'll not pay for a glorified GTMustang that pays for accolades. It's a play for suckers.
This car is a certified dud. This car is going to be taken to gapplebees and served a slice of humble pie by a s197 coyote with a Lund tune and e85 for half the price. Not worth it.
