the movie Midway(2019) is surprisingly accurate. While the explosions are bombastic, almost all of the events you see happen in it are based on true events. My favorite one is the aircraft mechanic that jumped in the tailgun of a sitting plane to help in the defense of the carrier. Almost half of the movie is actually the build up to the battle and speeds through the first half of the pacific war so I'd give it a watch.
My favorite thing about the movie is that the vets got mad about them using American carriers for the Japanese but then was reminded that they were all sunk.
Agree, althought the amount of AA the Japanese throw up into the air isn't true to life. The Japanese wished they had that much metal to throw into the air. Also, for some reason every Japanese BB is a Yamato. The history department did a great job with the script, it is just a shame that the graphics department didn't bother to represent each individual ship, and instead opted to use one model for each type of ship per nation.

@@Isolder74 Yeah, Nagumo and Yamaguchi hated each other. In fact, we know of at least in case where Yamaguchi put Nagumo in a headlock (alcohol was involved). It seems like the only time they agreed was at the very end when they threw Hiryu, and by extension Yamaguchi, away.
I'm really happy you'll watch all of their episodes!!! Though it's not necessary to watch them in the order, as they do the topics/songs in a somewhat random order, you'll be introduced to the band (& the bands experiences) more organically & will get their jokes, stories etc. better if you do do them from the beginning. It WILL propably be easier for you to make sure you see them all ,if you do go in order... Don't forget that ALL of the history episodes have a SONG that corrensponds with it! After all, that is the point of Sabaton History Channel, to explain the historical/ real story behind their songs to those who don't know them, in a clear, entertaining and factual way! The story of how US Intel folks decoded and found out the Japanese plans for both the Coral Sea and Midway battles is incredibly interesting, and definitely goes back at least to the Doolittle Raid in April 1942. The Japanese had planned to make changes to the standard codes in April of 1942...which the US had been successful in deciphering...but when Doolittle's Raiders hit the home islands, the Japanese Navy went on an emergency hunt for the ships that launched the strike, and they chose to delay the change to their codebooks. It was during the time when Japan continued to use the same old codes that the US got the Japanese plans for their objectives named "MO" and "MI". Had the Japanese code change happened as planned, the US codebreakers would have needed weeks or even months to start reading Japanese messages again, and the US would almost surely not have had foreknowledge of Japan's Port Moresby/Coral Sea operation or their plans for the Midway operation.
Sweden still had a conscription based army when Pär came of age. The conscription was introduced in 1901, dropped in 2010 and was reintroduced in 2017. All men did military service up until the cold war ended and the major downsizing of the military began. After that it _almost_ became voluntary since the military could cherry pick so if you weren't interested in doing it and you weren't a "fantastic" physical specimen you would most likely not get conscripted. Women were included in the conscription after the reintroduction in 2017. I wasn't even sent away for the psychological and physical evaluation. I only had to fill in the forms. I believe I received those in 2007... For Pär it must have been around 1999 so when Sabaton was founded.
My great grandpa was on the ij akagi bruhhh, his ass was fighting torpedo bombers at low altitude ;-; akagi was a beauty. He ended up on zuikaku much later on
Yamamoto also went to college in the USA! BUT,BECAUSE, THE Emporeor had given total military power to the Japanese Army, General Tojo had full power of the Japanese military forces!!!

Great reaction as usual. yeah, I cancelled cable TV when Discovery and fiction channel (yes, yes, they still call it history channel) turned to the dark side, it is now junk.
Though, once Yorktown was damaged Fletcher turned overall command over to Spruance, since he believed Spruance was more than capable of carrying the day and he wanted to focus on saving Yorktown.
Another interesting part about the Battle of Midway from the Japanese perspective is how hard the Japanese Navy worked to cover up the extent of the defeat, from not only the Japanese people, but also from the Japanese Army and the Emperor. Oh...and you asked if Midway the film from 2019 is worth watching, and in my opinion it is. 👍
Midway (2019) is such a fun watch. Even more if you've actually done the research too. That movie made me wish I own a copy of "Shattered Sword", but there are no book sellers here in my country that has a copy and the online stores are sketchy at best.

I have always loved the orders Admiral Nimitz gave to the strike commander of the American forces: "In carrying out the task assigned in Operation Plan 29-42 you will be governed by the principle of calculated risk, which you shall interpret to mean the avoidance of exposure of your force to attack by superior enemy forces without good prospect of inflicting, as a result of such exposure, greater damage to the enemy." ~ C. W. Nimitz. This mirrors the philosophy of Sun Tzu (“He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.”) and should be the foremost principle of all military commanders. One interesting fact about Nimitz is that he wanted to be in the Army but instead joined the Navy and went to Annapolis when he could not get an appointment to West Point. He was also court-martialed as an Ensign when the destroyer he was assigned to ran aground on a mudflat due to his negligence in checking the tide charts. Due to his willingness to accept blame and his otherwise excellent record, he was given a letter of reprimand and allowed to stay in the Navy. As an aside, the so-called History Channel should be called Fantasy Island Live.
Midway the movie is a good watch. Its a bit off and over the top but good. I would definitely suggest wathing montemayor's series on midway. Its like 5 parts but just unbelievablely good. Its told from the Japanese perspective which gives it a cool twist from most other things out there. He also has another great youtube videos for pearharbor and the battle of coral sea. Midway would be the 3rd one to watch if you want to see them in order.

Iirc both planes from Yorktown and Enterprise hit Kaga, with only three planes from Enterprise led my Richard Best hitting Akagi after noticing the multiple flights focusing on Kaga
@@sirboomsalot4902 Both Enterprise dive bomber squadrons hit Kaga. Best and his two wingmen pulled out of the dive on Kaga to hit Akagi. The dive bomber group from Yorktown went after Soryu while the Yorktown Torpedo Squadron went after Hiryu. The distraction of going after the torpedo planes and the fighters commanded by Thatch made sure the CAP did not interfere with the dive bomber attacks. Kaga had the misfortune of taking a double punch while Akagi only took one real hit that hit in just the right place to turn her onto an inferno.
Wasn't The Battle of Midway one of the first if not the first where the enemy ships didn't actually see each other? (This is based off something I remember seeing on The World at War series which I saw at age 11 in 1973!)
The problem of totalitarian regime, especially so fanatical as Japan, is that you cant just retreat, accept the losses and rebuild, because you may just as well bring your resignation letter, if not last will. So even if you are losing, you have to push on. Americans on the other hand were both courageous, industrious and cautious. Also, Nagumo was put in charge of carriers, despite being no fan of carriers, as he was a battleship hardliner, unlike Yamamoto. So he lead a division he had no personal interest in, no passion for, and no skill in using. Basically all he wanted was to gain a reason to bring forth the battleship/battlecruiser division and end it his way. But Americans were far too clever than to just fight on his terms.
The 1970's version of Midway is better. This video clip has ignored the 3 Torpedo squadron's that were destroyed. 2 Squadrons, 30 planes 90 men were lost. The 3rd Torpedo Squadron lost about half. The Dive bombers came in unopposed. The 2019 version has Nimitz ordering the Yorktown be repaired in 3 days which is ABSOLUTLY wrong. The repair had been planned BEFORE it ever docked.

“History buffs” has a VERY good video about this movie. I’d DEFINITELY recommend watching the movie, then their video. It’s awesome.

Yamaguchi, who was in command of Carrier Division 2 and died at Midway, went to Yale iirc.

The Task force was commanded by Fletcher, Spruace was only in command of the Hornet and Enterprise.
Though, once Yorktown was damaged Fletcher turned overall command over to Spruance, since he believed Spruance was more than capable of carrying the day and he wanted to focus on saving Yorktown.
I did the mandatory military training as an AA gunner.

Kaga and Akagi were hit by planes from the Enterprise. Yorktown took out the Soryu.
