Description: Over the course of the war in Ukraine, Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhin and Wagner Group became household names around the world. From their fighting at Bakhmut, to their standoffs with the Russian MoD leadership, to the dramatic march on Moscow followed by a public truce, the PMC and its leader often dominated the news.
But on 23 August, Prigozhin's story seems (so far) to have come to a very public end, when a jet carrying him and other Wagner members crashed in Russia with no reported survivors.

I know some of you were waiting for an air-war video this week (and for some of the exciting stuff currently in the video production pipeline) but given the way these events stole the headline, I thought it was better to put the coda on the Wagner mutiny & MoD rivalry story now, and pivot back to the campaigns themselves next week. I had done a lot of preparation for the time when Prigozhin finally ceased to be a factor which did help with this episode - though I hadn't expected the likes of Utkin to be hit at the same time.
While it remains hypothetically possible that Prigozhin will surface again (he's done it before) - I think for now the evidence is strongly that this is his end (albeit not the end of the role Russian PMCs play in overseas operations)

The weirdest part was being alive while traveling in Russia and reportedly meeting Putin. I thought those early stories of him still being in Russia were dubious. The whole affair is just bizarre.

When you're in a position of weakness, negotiate.
After you negotiate, strengthen your position.
When you're in a position of strength, break whatever deal you negotiated.
Technically, Prigozhin broke the deal, not Putin. There is a decent chance that Prigozhin would be alive had he just stayed in Belarus.
@schmittian1313 considering how many people were talking about how the resolution of Wagner's... whatever you call that thing they did... made Putin look really weak, I think he was going to do something like this eventually.
1. Very reasonable mindset, actually. And it's not like you are supposed to stick to whatever deal you negotiated when the conditions that forced this deal upon you are gone.
2. I would speculate that maybe Prigozhin was given 2 months to get his affairs in order and move to Belarus or Africa. And then it turned out that the last day of subscription is not included.

Prigozhin is a bastard and a war criminal, but the fact that he publicly stated that the war was based on lies, is continuing based on more lies, and there is a chance in hell that the war will have a good outcome for Russia while Russian soldiers are being slaughtered for no better purpose than the ego’s of those at the top…
…a cease fire would have certainly been declared soon after he walked up the Defense Ministry or Kremlin steps, and got on the phone with Putin to discuss the public trial of those “at fault” of deceiving him. Then eventually moving the conversation to the topic of Putin’s comfortable retirement in early 2024, or his state funeral after suddenly succumbing to his long illness in mid 2023.
Yeah I was boggled when the fool did it, but even more so when he stopped.

I'm frankly surprised that Russia managed to bring down a military craft. Usually they have better luck against Dutch civilian craft.
I spit my coffee out all over my screen.
I laughed so hard that my neighbors called the cops. When they arrived I explained the situation and they had to laugh too. Then all of them and my neighbors clapped and gave me $2000.

The hubris of Wagner flying high over Russian airspace with all of its senior leadership aboard is a veritable living reenactment of the ancient Greek parable of Icarus flying too close to the sun.

Tbh I think it was Putin having a little bit of dramatic irony considering out of all the oligarchs and fall victims, Prigozhin is the only one who shot down Putin's aircraft.
The stupidity of these streetwise hoodlums is truly shocking. At the very least you’d expect to see a plane shot down with the intended victims escaping until the next time. But, oh no, they gave themselves on a plate. Very strange indeed.

A man betrayed by his country, that destroyed his mercenary force and shot down his aircraft. He'll have to rebuild, but maybe Prigozhin will make the legend come back to life.
As a South African, I hate seeing other Africans paint the West as destabilizing Africa, meanwhile Russia is the one doing the funding and continuation of the atrocities in Africa.

Accidents do happen, just look at Trevor Jacobs. His engine stopped, the door sprung open and he was sucked out - fortunately he had a parachute, but more often than not people don't have.

If Perun knew that Pregozhin was going to die, did Perun kill him?
He explores how he would do it himself so he clearly considered this course of action. As an Australian civilian, he is the last person anyone would suspect so he could easily get away with it, Furthermore he has the audience and credibility to frame a Russian actor for the murder should too much evidence be revealed.
He has the motive, creating interesting content to grow his channel, it all makes sense, Perun killed Pregozhin
Considering Perun is a Slavic deity in charge of lightnings and thunderstorms, we cannot really definitively say "no", it falls into "possible" category.
Is it actually illegal for an Australian person to kill Prigozhin? At least if he returned to Emutopia that is.
If Perun knew he was going to die, and Perun didn't reach out to let him know, then he's at least an accomplice. Not gonna judge him, but I will remember not to mess with Perun.

I have always been dismayed by the lack of pant status reporting in mainstream media.
I always love your videos... a few points that I was thinking of through this...
1) While the loss of Prigozhin and his money will hurt the Wagner Group, the death of Uktin - *the* Wagner - as he referred to himself in a video, is a bigger blow to them. If Prigozhin was the face, Utkin was the heart.
2) While almost nothing in the way the war is being fought makes sense, it wouldn't make sense to fold Wagner into another PMC. Like them or not, they are a brand. They've got musicians writing songs for them, the have people from all over the world posting pictures with their patches and flags, that said if they're just going to be sitting in Belarus for twenty years I guess recruiting isn't a high priority.
3) Assuming Ukraine wins the war, they should put up a statue for Shoigu. He's done more to assure Ukrainian victory that most.

About 8 years ago I had a long conversation with an engineer who had just finished a long contract that oversaw aeroplane maintenance in Siberia. He said the training and quality of aeroplane maintenance engineers was truly shocking and advised never to take internal flights in Russia. (as though I might have been tempted, after his conversation). I also heard from someone who worked at an airport that, under EASA regulations, Russian operators are not allowed into European Union airspace for similar reasons - though tbf, bans on other carriers from across the world also exist.
Irrelevant in this case.
To expand on what hoodoo said, no amount of missed maintenance will make a wing fall off at the root on a plane this new.
@@concinnus not in level flight, but if they lost elevator control and and dived repeatedly into sharp pull-ups (perun quoted a source which statet exactly that in the beginning of the video), they could have overloaded the wings which could have resulted in rapid structural failure. commercial planes are no stukas, you will rip off wings if you do that.
True, but one would think Prigozhin had plenty of money to make sure he had a competent pilot and maintenance crew for his personal airplane. Ruzzian leaders and oligarchs may not care about the safety of their subjects, but they certainly care about the safety of themselves.

Not sure if it was mentioned here but I think it is worth taking a moment to pay respects to the crew who also died in the crash despite seemingly having played no part in the Wagner uprising, and whose fates often get glossed over by the media amidst their coverage and focus on Prigozhin and the other passengers - *_Aleksei Levshin (pilot), Rustam Karimov (co-pilot) and Kristina Raspopova (flight attendant)._*
As a private pilot myself, this is what I was thinking about. Some poor bastards were probably so excited to get out of regional flights and start doing VIP flights. They probably didn't even know who they were going to be flying, just excited that it would be a big name. 🙁
It does get pretty difficult to think about the ostensibly innocent people who had to serve the people we hate.
They were just doing a job. I don't think they were fully aligned with Wagner. Just paid to ferry them off someplace, treating them like regular rich folks. Doesn't matter who pays them; they got mouths to feed. Wrong place, wrong people.
Still, with my sympathies for the crew of the aircraft (and in some sense the aircraft itself), I have practically none for their passengers.

I remember a Chechen being interviewed during the conflict there a few decades ago. A rogue artillery shell had hit his street, killing around 20 members of his family. He said that he didn't know who had started the war, he only knew that it wasn't him.
How many millions have felt that down the years, as they've found themselves caught up in events they have no control over?

One thing I think you missed was that the body was supposedly shown to some Wagner troops, and they positively identified it. Another interesing development is the paving over of Wagner cemeteries created by Prigozhin after Bakhmut, which also points to Putin likely trying to cut off any future lionization/martyrdom.
That 'cemetery paved over' story was literal fake news. There's an article in Russian explaining that the wooden crosses are being replaced by the permanent stone pyramids.

It was also a useful way to deploy troops on a semi-deniable basis, going around any legal hurdles by not officially being part of the Russian military. Which also makes it attractive to the most hardcore of Russian nationalists looking for a way to support Russian interests around the world, and a good place for the Russian military to send special forces types so they can work overseas. So people who will have strong opinions on how the war is going.

I think it speaks to how overstretched the Russian military is at this point. I don't think they made a strategic decision to allow the convoy to almost reach Moscow and shoot down multiple aircraft along the way.

The description of the aircraft's erratic flight pattern before the crash reminds me of the stuff you see in action films where a fight takes place on an airplane or helicopter.

Prigozhin had a real "I don't give a flying 'F' " attitude. Lukashenko quoted him as saying "The hell with it. If I die, I die." Possibly because he felt he'd been stabbed in the back so many times by "Russia". But, it's hard to believe so many others felt the same. Given the apparently good relationship between Prigozhin's troops and himself, did he not care about what their men would face afterward -- unless, of course, that was already planned out?
Maybe there was an agreement between Wagner leadership and Moscow leadership that Putin would let them live if they chose to withdraw completely from the public eye, i.e be dead to the world. So this convenient crash is actually a false flag and they're all still alive but out of the public eye and might continue to live in exile for the rest of their lives. Kinda like Nazis in Argentina type deal, you know. Restart lives as different people and Putin ensures their older selfs are dead to the Public through this fake crash - I mean the crash is real but the passenger list is probably not.
Just a theory obviously.
It is worth noting that IF the aircraft was not shot down, Russia should invite Embraer, who made the aircraft, to participate in the investigation. So unless Russia's aviation authorities invite Embraer, we can be pretty sure the aircraft was shot down

The tent photo is fairly straightforward to explain. Prighozin liked to portray himself as 'a man of the troops' so he did the basic 'treat your troops like you treat yourself'.
The Wagner fighters slept in a tent in Belarus, so just for photo ops Prigo slept there to. RUMINT says he actually did sleep there for real, with good effect on troop morale, but that's RUMINT.

One of the things that I wanted to point out, that in my view just underscores that more than anything this was an execution made very public on purpose. There were reports (and videos, that you can find) coming from russia, where wagner veterans are complaining that the cemetery of their brother-in-arms is being demolished - with piles of taken-down crosses and some areas being covered with cement by construction workers... In almost two years we are used to many stuff here in Ukraine, and I don't have any sympathy to these brutal mercenaries, but even with that - I was shocked by this move. Then again - it's very stalin-like - don't just destroy, but also erase... And still the population will support all of this. The graves of the 'heroes' of siege of Bakhmut being erased few months forward and they still have no doubts that they are on the right side of history...

Based on the witness reports, the flight data, and your analysis, I think what's most likely is that an explosion disabled the pitch controls (maybe by just blowing the tail off) but the pilot fought to keep it steady for some time, even after a wing came off, too, either from a second explosion, or from the stress of flying without a tail. It wasn't clean at all... The passengers and crew might have passed out from lack of oxygen before the plane went down.

Blowing the tail off is more than just losing pitch control: you've lost all directional stability.
The missing outboard wing section was probably caused by the jet departing straight and level flight and tumbling at high speed immediately after the tail was blown off by the explosion.
The passengers and crew would've known something terrible had occurred, but the g-forces and sudden oxygen deprivation would mean they rapidly blacked out and were unlikely to be conscious on impact.
@@mrkeogh A witness reported seeing it flying with only one wing, and the plane's erratic movement started with a sudden rapid climb, followed by a drop, with a second climb later before it eventually went out of control by entering a flat spin. So it seems the pilots were able to react to whatever happened and restore control temporarily, it just wasn't enough to stop the failure cascade.

I, personally, choose to believe that the Prig & Co. didn't get the relief of passing out... I rather more like to imagine them in absolute terror until the moment of their extremely violent demise.

In large news organizations it is very common to have background information on important people and celebrities in case a breaking store happens or an obituary needs to be written quickly.

it was just an accident, Prigozhin just fell from a window, but the window just happen to be several thousand feet in the air at the time, and attached to a plane, and there might have been some explosives needed to open the window
