The Race to Claim the Arctic - Claims, Icebreakers & Competition in the Far North
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 май 2024
- The Arctic is pretty unique. It's a place where allies like the US and Canada feud, Russia is still arguably the dominant power and the United States can casually announce a claim to an area more than twice the size of California.
But with access to Arctic resources as a draw - this unique setting is likely to see far more competition in the coming years. So let's chill a bit, and talk Arctic competition.
Note a correction - In this presentation I refer to Norway handing over presidency of the Arctic Council to Russia in 2021. Norway currently holds the presidency, Russia received it from Iceland in 2021.

Thanks to the Patrons who voted for this topic - really hoping I can justify continuing the series to look at Arctic warfare and strategy. It's a strange world, with unique demands and consideration, and one where Russia has a powerful position (albeit potentially weakened as a result of that fateful 2022 decision). With ease of access growing and potential resource wealth on the table, I think there's a genuine chance that nations continue to invest in building up in the Far North. As for what that means for the fragile ecosystem and past agreements on the region - only time will tell.
Hi Perun, so if Russia would have just waited 20 years Global Warming would have given them great northern Ports?.

The thing about calculating the population of the arctic is extra funny to me. My aunt and uncle were IRS workers in Alaska, based out of Anchorage, and would fly out to the arctic. On most occasions, entire villages and towns would “go fishing/hunting” and be nowhere to be found because someone at the airport leaked that the IRS was on the way XD
Ah. New record set for 'most impossible job.' HTF do you audit anyone whose only claimed income is the check from the State of Alaska for oil-revenue share, when they and everyone in contact with them is unavailable and if you don't show back up at the office, people just shrug and say, "Bear must have got them, or maybe they fell through the ice?"

There's significant dispute over where Santa and his workshop are located. Based on the conflicting information provided by commenters of various nationalities, I conclude he must have addresses in multiple countries, probably in some convoluted scheme to dodge paying taxes
Santa being a tax cheat charity explains so much.

Santa lives in Greenland. More specifically in Spraglebugten near Uummannaq. His workshop is located out on Greenland's permanent ice sheet, and his current primary logistical hub and warehouse is at the North pole (for tax purposes and easier routing to the rest of world).
His mailing address, and the world's largest mailbox (a popular tourist attraction) is:
Santa Claus North pole 3961 Uummannaq, Greenland.
Santa's global operations couldn't possibly work without Chinese factories. In Earfell there is a media division.

Yep, if Perun says it's time to learn about the Artic, ITS TIME TO LEARN ABOUT THE ARTIC!
Somehow I found the land border between Denmark and Canada to be the most surprising nudged of knowledge in this video. :)
Ah, the whisky bottle war...
In the process doubling the number of neighbouring countries for both Canada and Denmark. Canada had only a land border to USA, and Denmark only to Germany (the bridge to Sweden doesn't generally count as a land border, but definitions vary).
One of my professors was a man who spent every summer in the Arctic on a Canadian research ship. He said that while the extent if sea ice was decreasing a lot, the thickness of the ice was what concerned him the most. Previously even in summer there was plenty of thick multi-year ice which made travel difficult. Today (as if him telling me this 15 years ago), the summer ice may have a certain extent, but the ice is so thin and crispy, he wouldn't trust it to walk on. They didn't even need an ice breaker to clear their path. The research ship could just crush the ice as if it was nothing.
It’s been thinning a fair piece since the mid-70’s. That said, in the 1920’s, the ice was down near current levels then ballooned up through the 40’s & 50’s.

As a Canadian interested in the arctic this is a great article.
Thank you perun.
IDK what people in the US are talking about, one has to just look at the map, those are clearly your internal waters!
So, I'm from Iceland, and I went to Grímsey last year, the island in the north that the arctic circle crosses. Gorgeous place, BTW. The arctic circle marker is right at the north side of the island, and it's a giant concrete sphere with a metal tube through the centre. This is so they can drag it as the arctic circle moves (see the Wikipedia article on "Axial Tilt" for why this happens). At Grímsey, It's currently moving north at 14,5m per year and will naturally move off the island in 2047.
Well, by then you can properly claim to be a "near arctic state".
Can’t you just volcano up some more island before 2047?
@@peterfireflylund Haha.... it's not at all impossible, though in 2 1/2 decades, it seems unlikely.
Technically we have some even further north land, Kolbeinsey. But it's a skerry, only 20 meters wide and steadily eroding away. But new skerries or islands could always emerge. There was a submarine eruption in the area in 1999. Who knows, maybe we might end up with land more solidly in the Arctic Circle in the future :)

Barrow, Cumbria, UK can get a bit chilly as well (yep even in the 'summer')
As a Danish sinologist who took Greenlandic and Arctic studies at university, then nothing of this is new information for me. Except the spceifics of fleet sizes. I would like to add that no major freight company have shown interest in the area as a potential shortcut. Nor are any of the natural resources in the area accessable to commercial use. It is simply too expensive to get the resources. For the PRC, they felt excluded from a group that housed members of the EU, Russia and the USA. That is also an important aspect. There are more but you get the picture. The area is very much poopoo at the moment no value at all. But that might chance, but then again, freight conpanies faces nedsive fines for delays at their spot at harbours, and if a huge piece of ice gets in your way then you are screwed, it can take hours to clear, and that is hours that you need to pay for + the fine + your spot is getting pushed back.
And if a huge ship decides to nose dive into a side embankment, or freshwater levels are a bit low for running the locks, or the forecast calls for sporadic showers of ballistic missiles... Well, it's very easy for freight companies to have a change in tune rather rapidly, and as they say, "opportunity favors the prepared"

You'll have plenty of government powerpoints to ease the withdrawal through, right?

I feel like there should be a heavy metal rock band called "Arctic Warfare".
There is a Norwegian pop-duo called "Dronning Mauds Land" (Queen Maud's Land). The name is taken from a region of Antarctica claimed by Norway as a dependent territory. In this context, however, there are no political relations. Incidentally, Queen Maud was born Maud of Wales as the youngest daughter of Edward VII and married to Haakon VII of Norway.
As a Finn, living in a country with the most heavy metal bands per capita, I'm pretty sure we have one by that name.
A soundtrack for the very Coldest of Warriors for sure
@@Sammenluola If there's one Google doesn't seem to able to find them. However, I did find a song called "Arctic Warfare Super Magnum" by someone named Daniel Findlan on Apple Music. It wasn't heavy metal, however.
With songs like "Ice Cold War" and "Knocking on Arctic's Ice".
I had no idea that the political climate around the arctic was so....... Icey.
(pun intended!)
Great video @PerunAU
Someday my country (Canada) will absolutely nail some notable bit of military procurement.
But that day is not today.
Gentlemen, it is Sunday.
Leaving a comment for the algorithm.
I'm just reminding everybody that the russian army is a complete joke🤷♀️
It's Sunday, my dudes.
Drinking beer 🍺 for that alcorhythm 🎉
I will reply for the algorithm
Excellent choice, Sir.
A not insignificant amount of people plan their Sundays around Perun uploads
I see from your profile pick that today's topic was especially relevant.
Good dog.
ditto
I would love it if the NW Passage were recognized as Canadian internal waters. If the NW Passage were intentional, you’d have Russian warships passing freely through.
If it’s Canadian, the US just has to negotiate a military and commercial use agreement with Canada in exchange for bankrolling a series of refuel and SAR ports along the route. Canada then use those to develop its arctic interior.
There's 1 icebreaker remaining in Denmark: Thorbjorn (b. 1980). Auctioned off from the navy 8 years ago and currently lying in Svendborg, for sale.

The elite dog-sled unit is comprised of the best soldiers of the elite unit "Frømandskorpset", akin to US Navy Seals or UK SBS. It's called "Sirius Patruljen", Sirius Patrol.
Serious patrol 🤭
May I suggest a future topic? As a Czech, I am rather interested in the Czech led Artillery shell initiative. I wonder where are the shells coming from, what can those old cold war connections used to procure shells mean and so on.
Good idea. Let's see how he can crack that nut! A gauntlet is thrown down!
Excited to see how to turn discussions on Arctic exploration into defense economics analysis!
Everything is defense economics.
Remember all those offshore oil rigs Russia has? They have to have undersea storage and pipelines.
Also, all "Russian" natural gas comes from the Arctic Ocean or Siberia.
Gee, didn't there used to be the two largest natural gas pipelines in the world, running to Europe? What ever happened to those? Didn't it release an environmentally-collapsing quantity of gas contamination that, by itself, was supposed to raise global temperatures by 2/10ths of a percent Centigrade in that year alone, and add the same on a permanently cumulative basis for at least the next one hundred years, before it is re-absorbed naturally (and I would love to understand the chemistry and physics of that calculation)?
So, what are the _long-term economic costs_ if 'someone' starts taking out oil platforms?
What happens
@@davidgoodnow269 all sorts of good things. forests and lakes in saudia arabia, beach front land in colorado. banana plantations in canada. you ever had bananas and maple syrup? to die for.
I'm not worried about US/Canadian tensions in the Arctic. After all, it is too cold for geese there. So I'm sure it will stay civil.
Topic suggestion: Atrillery ammo prduction capacity around the world and its developement in the past year vs historic highs. I really would be interested in this, and hope this gets noticed.
In 1917/18 the British made circa 40million artillery shells, currently production and it's calling is just limited by finances.
'Somewhat less than existed during the Second World War,' would be my first guess, followed by, 'which peak cannot be hit again due to limitations on resource production, other markets for every precursor, and changes in environmental laws at both the national and international levels.'
I guess if you find yourself in a situation that requires WW-level amounts of shells.. Then environmental laws might not be your biggest concern ^^
@@davidgoodnow269although to be completely forthcoming, just about every US environmental law includes a provision allowing the president to suspend any or all of it in an emergency.
@@kemarisite Interesting that it would be codified that way. As head of the Executive Branch, a President can direct enforcement priorities, but is ultimately responsible that the laws are enforced. So I guess that would fall under Emergency Powers.
Fair to say this channel’s weekly content has been, at times, my favorite part of the week
You said in your Turtle Tanks video (May 12) that this video wasn't as well received as you'd like. I found it extremely informative.
This episode is true genius: You know, doing something new that no one else seems to be looking at, doing it well and doing it with style and humor. I am amazed and gratified to have my mind and knowledge expanded. My best Patreon subscription ever. Thank you, Perun!
I love this topic and I'm glad people are starting to talk about it.
I was just talking to someone on r/civ the other day about adding nuclear icebreakers as a Russian unique unit. Did you see that thread Perun?
Thank you 💛 Perun. This topic is fantastic and being a Canadian I found it both interesting and important! Please expand on it. Ty
Dannish snapps is called Akvavit. It is very good.
The amount of science fiction pop culture that you constantly reference my friend has me convinced that if you embraced the power freedom units we could be fast friends 😂
Keep up the amazing work Perun! Thanks as always for continuing to educate me on the situation of the modern geopolitical world 💪❤️
China: I is near Artic State!
Arctic Council: Ignore him. He's special.
Just fired a letter off to Congress complain about their negligence in getting the ice breakers built.
A correction, the 3rd danish icebreaker, Torbjørn, is still functional and it is privately owned and moored in Svendbog værft
The puns were glorious in this one, but my ears are not yet bleeding so I demand more.
17:58 "less of a get off my lawn vibe" 😂 lol - so Aussie. Love the immediate pivot to address any wise guy remark about the lack of lawn. Well played good Sir, well played.
Starting off the party with some ice breakers, huh?
I hope you’ll cover the historical method of claiming Arctic land, used by multiple Arctic nations, which is grabbing a bunch of indigenous nomads and announcing to them that they will now live in this particular town and aren’t allowed to leave anymore. Then you have people who can keep your flag up year round. Also their economy is wrecked so they are fully dependent on government help and can’t ever rebel.
Canada went further than just sedentarizing the nomads and also yanked some from northern Quebec up another 1,000 km to Ellesmere Island and a harbour along the northwest passage (Grise Fiord and Resolute Bay) to populate some otherwise unpopulated areas and thus strengthen its land and internal waters claims.
Shh! You are damaging Canada's carefully crafted international image.
Woke up, checked phone, Perun video 11 minutes ago. Fuck yeah.
32:48 "we're just going to break the ice on the topic a bit" OW! You sprained by brain with that one!

Wow. I was hoping for an episode on „strategically important pieces of land“ and you bring this. Thanks!😊
It was surprisingly good, informative and neutral video. Thank you.
I wonder how the Arctic Council handles the “I drink your milkshake” scenario of sideways drilling
Re: The U.S, Canada, and icebreakers, vis-a-vis NATO capabilities- This seems like a problem that is right in Canada's wheelhouse- I could see a NATO requirement for x number of icebreakers, which Canada could fufill, militarily and economically- since Canada will have to service the Northwest Passage more and more often as global warming (yes, WARMING, not 'climate change') tightwns its grip and makes the northern routes more and more viable- so much so that that capability will become indispensable, for trade.
And, if Canada continues to assert that the channels through the northern islands in Nunavik province are territorial waters and not just international sea lanes, it will have a vested interest in controlling the straights that make up the NW Passage...
So, vis-a-vis NATO, and NW Passage trade, Canada is the optimum member to fufill that icebreaking capability/requierment... Eh? Y'know what im taaking aboot.
(The US ought to maintain its own, but, again, under the responsibility deligated by NATO, and it's auspices... Oh, Canadaaa 🍁!)
Very well done. A good explanation of a situation that gets minimal news coverage. I am looking forward to the next installment.
Thanks once again Perun!
Having experienced -35 w/wind chill this past winter; layering up, it’s not a comfortable environment without protective clothing.
You're not wrong about the Houthis not being willing to set up in the Arctic circle. If there's one thing us desert folk fear... it is the cold.
One thing merchants fear more than a random rpg shot is to navigate between massive ice bricks and nuclear submarines in -60 celcius.
Don't deserts get somewhat cold during the night? OK, I think that's still only slightly below the freezing point which is a lot warmer than Arctic winters, but still.
Immediately one of my favorites of yours. I always love the ones that bring up a topic I didn't realize I was curious about.
You Sir got some timing. I was literally researching about arctic claims and polymetallic nodules the last few days and now you show up and talk about making it a series.
Perun, awesome as always-Thanks! Canadas poor performance up North is, as always, a result of our Government hating our military and science community. SAD. Regards-JHW
I don't think you took into account China's historical claims to the region since ancient times.
Half the continental US was under glaciers during the last ice age. China not so much...
I'm really looking forward to the next episodes.
Canada & Denmark should build a Bar at the boarder on that Island as a mutual check point 😂
Yay Perun discusses Canada!
Oh he's discussing our procurement and navy? Oh... yeah... that's embarassing.
it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when i think of the Arctic, but ‘international competition’ is definitely among the top 5 things
If a future discussion on arctic warfare doesn't make mention of the Arctic Warfare Magnum I will be greatly disappointed. It's an iconic weapon and a great example of arctic equipment being different sometimes in obvious but overlooked ways like needing a larger bolt handle to operate easily in cold environments due to bulkier gloves. Surely an Aussie needs to give a shout out to the Brits when they actually get a gun right...
Norway has ordered 3 "jan Mayen" class large patrol ships (10400t displacement), that are supposed to be polar class 6. So not exactly top of the class, but still a significant improvement in the number of ice-breakers available
