This is probably my favorite Capturing Car Culture episode so far. Thank you guys so much for watching. Please check out my personal channel for more car nerd content.
This was like opening the Pandora box.. i was like glued to the screen the whole clip and re-watch it like, about 3-4 times to check out slowly every angles of each car.. Damn !!!
They even documented how much lice each inmate had, week by week. They said they wanted to document how thorough of a job they were doing. Wild. Something like they had over 30 miles of binders/bookshelf space for the furher’s files.. Think of all the engineering work they have done for other car companies and all the special machines and test beds/test platforms all the various test. It’s wild. Nothing to mention of the Porsche Design division
The amount of money they've invested in protecting their heritage shows exactly why they're still so successful and why they're the benchmark for sportscars. Continuously evolution rooted in history.
Fun fact for you Larry: at 25:37 when Thomas talks about the wood panels that make up the vintage Reutter signage, when the 356 body shop division of Reutter was eventually bought out by Porsche in 1963, what was left of the company turned its attention to making racing seats for mainstream manufacturers. It rebranded itself through a portmanteau of their original name: Reutter Karosseriewerk. Or as we'd know them today, Recaro.
I bought my 1968 Porsche 912 Right Hand Drive in the UK when I was 25 and still have it. I have just turned 60 this year. I knew when I set out to buy the car back then it was a design classic and ironically more than I could afford. Today I feel so lucky to still have the car and will never part with it. One day I will visit Stuttgart to see the collection.
As also an English man a 68 RHD 912 is extremely rare, in a way as they are much rarer id prefer it over the same age 911 at the time the power difference generally must be very little.
@@PaulSchofield-p6b I rebuilt a Porsche with a broken engine which was meant to be parted out and die when I was 17. It took me more than one year to completely revise the car with my dad. We stripped everything and rebuild it properly. We rebuilt the engine, the suspension, the brakes, the interior, the roof, the headlights,.. just everything. T he paint was surprisingly still in fairly good condition, with only very small defects so chose to keep it as is with a little Patina. When I drove it for the first time a little after I was 18 it felt so surreal. All the hard work, all those long evenings and nights with my dad and all the hours put into it went flashing by as the engine screamed at me while flooring it for the first time. Now I’m 23, I still have the car and I already made so many beautiful memories with it. In total I drove almost 70.000 km with it and she’s holding on very strong. What an amazing video ,especially for us Porsche lovers, something we would otherwise never have had the honor of seeing such an amazing piece of Porsche History, thank you Larry Chen for your truly amazing work, you rock buddy!!!
Crazy video, and insane props to your tour guide for being able to tell you exactly what was going on with every car you were curious about. Part of what I love about Porsche is the clear passion the day-to-day workers clearly have for the brand... Even if they're also very German in their passion lol
Exactly, Thomas is such a knowledgeable guy and the huge amount of so special cars are there, they could make a half hour episode of almost every car there and all would be so interesting ❤
Larry … this has to be one of your better if not best behind the scenes videos . Having owned 11x 911’s , 3 944 turbos S and I have to say 1 mistake of an 88 -928s4 …. Seeing all the history here brings me back to each step in Porsche history that drive me to reach for the next car .. having the privilege of having 3 x 930 slantnose factory cars … and my first Porsche back when I was 19 , a 69s … when the cars were just merely easy cars to buy watching this video brings me back to the feeling of owning each and every car …. Keep doing what you are doing !!! 👍👍👍
I live in Austria near a VW/Porsche dealership. So I am used to see Porsches on a daily basis. But you'll never see something like this. This is so cool and breathtaking.
The Porsche Type 64 buck (Styling buck? Aero test buck?) is the one that absolutely melted my mind. Thank you for this, Larry, Thomas, and Porsche. And Thomas, saving that wood and everything else is the best kind of nuts :)
This peak behind the scenes is such a treat! Truly special development cars, historic race cars and everything in between. I saw that 918 dev car when I went to the Porsche Experience Center at Hockenheim in Sept. ‘22. It was so cool to see it in person! Hopefully one day, we’ll get a behind the scenes tour as well! Until then, I’ll just keep watching this video over and over! Great job Larry and the entire Hagerty team!
Such awesome content. Not being a Porsche guy, watching Larry Geeking out and Tomas being so lay back. A guy who has a job that he really loves. Made this so special. I can't image what a cool magazine quarterly this collection would make or an online Quarterly. Such history. THANKS to those who made this happen at Hagerty. CHEERS
And at minute 14.00, in the corner on the right in the locked section, there is a first generation Harley Davidson V-Rod. A fantastic motorcycle that, thanks to the help of Porsche, has a racing engine that is both extremely reliable and street legal. Screw all the old-fashioned Harley riders who say that this isn't a real Harley-Davidson, I ride my 2014 V-Rod Muscle with pride. Out of respect for the great work Porsche did on it, I have two Porsche emblems on it.
If the cars they have on display are all already super rare and unique, I cannot begin to imagine what lies beneath the sheets in that private collection…
This is one of the most amazing Porsche videos that I’ve ever seen. What better person to present it to us then the legendary Larry Chen. The shots were beautiful, too.
I'd take a Porsche over any italian car ANYTIME. Went to the Porsche Museum last year and man... it's something else!! Fun story: Had to drive around the place quite a lot to find a parking spot, and the amount of buildings that were part of Porsche was MINDBOGLING. I'm sure we passed next to this "secret" building. Maybe walking, maybe just driving around. What a great time we had!!
Incredible collection! Such an amazing watch. Thanks for the great filming and editing Larry/Hagarty and for making the collection available to the public Porsche. 😊
Wow, what an amazing collection of Porsche history! That GT1 is 🔥...as the kids say nowadays, Lol. My all time fav Porsche is the 959. I was a younger lad when it was developed and it just blew my mind on how cool it looked. Thank you for the tour!
Now this is the most valuable video in the entire RUclips for me. Ty for that amazing video mate, seeing all of this in a single video is just amazing. Also, I spend many time in Porsche galery online and now I know where some of the photos come from 😊
This is so cool that Porsche has like this collection, just epic, i would easy to be there 12 hours and listen the story´s, thank you Larry that you share with us this epic video
A lot of millennial car fans, don’t appreciate how significant the 928 was back to Porsche in the late 70s-early 90s. This collection sort solidifies the 928s importance.
Thank you for the channel and thank uou for the host for remembering all the cool details of each car. You can tell he's one of us for remembering all these tiny details!!! Really happy for him that he works there!!
2:59 That is the debut car for the 962 - Michael and Mario drove that #001 chassis - 1984 24 hours of Daytona 👍 (Got pole position but had mechanical failures later in the race and retired)
This is the first time I found this channel, and this !!! the history there is unbelievably an totally blown me away. All together like that is next level. & the GT 1. Crazy respect brother.
Wooow. Such an incredible video and of course, tons of respect to Larry in how much he appreciate all aspects of car culture, its enthusiasts and the stewards of car history. This episode really blew me away, though I came here with high expectations, knowing the subject matter! So cool.
Fantastic to see that he saved some part of the Reutter building ❤️. To my knowledge it was a controversial decision to demolish it due to the historic nature.
They have a Harley V-Rod in the secret room! It’s cool to see they got and kept one, a lot of people don’t know Porsche designed the engine for that bike.
"Ein Nagel im Kopf haben" ("having a nail in your head") is a common saying in Germany when someone does something irrational/absurd for their cause/hobby/passion.
I may not be a Porsche fan but this is one hell of an amazing collection of great cars. What an incredible opportunity to experience this collection. Thanks so much!!❤❤
What an amazing video and a magnificent facility! However, I do have to wonder if Larry actually could tell a 962 a 917 and a 935 apart prior to seeing this collection LOL

That GT1 just casually parked there was the biggest flex ever!
So sad that people in the comments are making fun of the Porsche employee, English isn't his native language and he's really doing a decent job of it.
