I adore that they're actually casting real trans actors to play trans characters. They're finally getting their well deserved representation, and Theo, Nomi and Sophia are definitely my favourites! 💞
I don't know if I agree with Theo. I find that the writers situated his relationship with Robin in a very hetero-normative way. I can appreciate that he's a feminine gay trans man, but his portrayal and the situations he finds himself in is so stereotypically female that I sometimes forget he's a trans man. His gender identity shouldn't define him, but it should at least inform the choices he makes. For example, Nomi is in similar stereotypical female roles (damsel in distress), but always manages to overcome that role by subverting the troupe. She is an active member in the team, and her relationshipwith Amanita is vital to the plot. Theo is just tokenism, after he finds a boyfriend he no longer has purpose.
I don't think we should limit people from a role just cause they aren't the same gender or sexuality as the character I think the best actor should be casted no matter what they are
@@calebjones7868 That's true, however, you have to consider that the same is not done with trans actors... therefore it's important to give them the roles that represent them. Otherwise they won't have any acting opportunities. It's not about who's best for the role, it's about job equity. If trans actors were given cjs gender roles, as they should, then this wouldn't be an issue.
@Daniel Jaramillo It's a question that's been answered... some people just refuse to listen and understand. I can tell you H2O means water, a formula consisting of an oxygen and two hydrogen atoms, but if you won't listen you'll always wonder what the H, the 2, and the O stands for. Listening and hearing are two things you have to learn.
@Daniel Jaramillo transgender people feel that they were born in the wrong body and so they get the medical procedures to feel more comfortable in their own bodies. i hope that made sense :)
Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn in Euphoria is hands down my favorite. I like that her character is seen as a real person with struggles other than being trans. She has real and other valid struggles just like all the other characters. The general audience didn't even realise that she was trans until her backstory.
Adam Torres a King forever. They did him so dirty the way they ended his story. I personally think he deserved more than an honorable mention in this, most of the trans friends I have had told me Adam was the first representative they were exposed to and he was the first trans character I had ever seen. My awareness of the community started with Adam Torres.
Unfortunately Jordan Todosey didn't want to renew her contract and the writers wanted to make a statement about the dangers of texting and driving. Completely agree though! I'm cis myself but he was just a great written character all around and changed the game forever.
@@miaaida5187 what frustrates me about adams story is how they set up him wanting to start t, which would have been a perfect opportunity to recast the role to a trans male actor. he was the first trans guy i saw on tv and his death was really tough for me, even though his character wasn’t perfect he was all we had for a long time
Happy Pride Month everyone 🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 5:10 hey that’s my name! Well Nia is my deadname now and R.I.P Adam I loved him so much
Perhaps, but they still have the most iconic LGBT couple in comic history: Wiccan & Hulkling. And North Star was the first openly gay character in comics. I believe that Marvel actually had more LGBT characters as a whole... BUT, you're right, they never promote it. It's a shame.
@Valentino I respectfully disagree, I think it's the other way around. Throughout the year they'll focus on key characters who are LGBT, like Wiccan in the Eympre arc. That series focuses predominantly on two gay characters, and a few years ago they featured the first gay wedding in comics. There's ton of representation, just take a look at the X-men (I can think of 10 strong LGBT characters in the roster). The problem is they don't promote their representation! Like during pride month, they don't use Wiccan and Hulkling as promotion, or use Bobbh Drake as an advocate, etc. Whereas with DC, you see pics of Wonderman standing in front of the rainbow flag, etc. Edit: Northstar's wedding was part of Pride month, but Wiccan and Hulkling's wedding was not. (I read volumes not monthly issues, so I could be wrong about release dates.)
I love all seasons of Glee, especially Seasons 4 and 5 because we got to see more or Unique and she was such an inspiring person. More inspiring than Kurt was.
Nia Nal is number one in my eyes...loved her from day one. And she's finally made her comic debut, in a story written by Nicole Maines herself ( in a funny coincidence another comic released the same day featured a Batwing story written by the actor who plays Luke Fox on Batwoman...for those who don't know, Luke IS Batwing in the comics and is set to suit up as the hero in the show ) also Lexi from the new Saved By The Bell deserves a mention
You missed Trevor from Shameless. Played by transgender actor Elliot Fletcher. Appreciate he was in it a while ago but I think he was at least as impactful as Theo in Sabrina.
1. So happy that you picked Sofia as number one. I love both her and Laverne Cox so much 2. Also grateful you didn't put Beiste from Glee on this list. I understand representation is important but this storyline felt forced after so many seasons to me. Beiste along with Sue Sylvester showed a different side to femininity without going them being lesbians or otherwise. I just felt that the whole Beiste identifies as male thing just to create a stir and get ratings. If they truly wanted to turn a female character male then they should have invited back Sunshine Corazon to do the story. I love Unique and thought that was representation enough in the show. They could have also introduced a new trans character rather than force an existing one into a storyline that negated earlier work on the show. I am fully in support with anyone who feels that they have been misgendered but I don't think that's the case with Dot Marie Jones or her character. That's all I"m saying.
Wow, so happy to see that there are more and more trans characters on tv! I personally really loved Ben's story on Good Girls as well! Happy pride everyone!
