I think Kurt Hummel from Glee should be on this list at least as an Honorable Mention if not in the top five because he was an incredible character who had an amazing arc as the only openly gay character at his school, who went through hell, but still managed to find love and come out the other end happy and healthy.

Yep, me too. Season 7 was awesome. Sorry to those that missed it. Though a Tara cameo was teased and I could never get used to Kennedy as her new gf. It seemed forced.
TBH rewatching the show I know Tara was the first lesbian character, but ambers acting was so bad I actually preferred willow and Oz. Just because Seth’s acting was better
I think Santana from Glee could make a great honorable mention.. She was I think the first openly gay Latin American in a TV show and her character changed the life of a lot of people Also Kurt Hummel
Kurt Hummel should’ve been on this list. His character had a lot of flaws (who didn’t on that gd show) and through today’s lens he doesn’t seem like that big of a deal but he was. Kurt was the first representation of a gay teenager a lot of people had ever seen on tv. Him and Blaine actually getting kissing scenes (although they paled in comparison to the straight characters) was a huge deal. Yes, there had been gay characters in tv before…but I feel like Kurt was really the start of people becoming more comfortable seeing that on tv.
I’m shocked that Kurt from Glee and Cyrus from Andi Mack aren’t on here. Kurt was really a lot of teens first exposure to gay youth. It normalized gay teen romance including sex which was highly controversial. Cyrus was the first main Disney Channel character to come out. This was huge for the channel and really spoke to the young audience.
Kurt I can agree with, but Cyrus I feel like he is not ahead of his time. In fact I would argue the opposite, that due to Disney having such a hard time adding prominent LGBT+ characters on TV Cyrus would be considered late to the party
Billions is a good show and I love how people are like “they always have to have a gay character in a show and kids don’t need to know about it.” but I remember watching soap operas with my mom and sister and there will always be a few gay characters and I would always watch Degrassi as a kid just to see Adam and Claire 24/7 and a few other lgbtq characters
I was thinking about Degrassi the entire time. So much representation from even the earliest episodes like Marco and even Paige and Alex. But especially the later episodes where they explored other LGBTQIA characters like Adam, Rasha, Zane, Yael, and so many more.
It should be noted that Willow is a classic example of bi erasure, the series and the media apparently forgetting about her relationship with and love for Oz as well as other male characters she showed interest in in the earlier seasons.
Yeah , people always mention , how great Willow and Tara were , but seem to forget about Willow and Oz ! 😂I have never forgotten about Oz and wanted him and Willow back together . But it didn't happen . Ah well , I accepted Willow with Tara . Just to have them kill Tara . Even Josh Whedon makes mistakes . I didn't like Kennedy , sorry.😂
Anna from One Tree Hill Season 2, her character arc showed a very real darker side of what being LBGT+ can hold with having a homophobic brother. They also left out Alastair from Frasier, which displayed an instance of having a romantic feeling for someone who, shile an amazing friend, can't return the feels because they are straight
@@plumdutchess I get what your saying, Glee is slightly more contemporary but it did feature several LGBTQ+ characters where their sexuality were major plot points (albeit the show also has many flaws and is cringey haha). It was primarily a show about celebrating and accepting who you are, and with its younger audience, it helped many people to do this too. PLUS MsMojo will use any chance it gets to talk about Glee usually 😉
@@izzle8208 Still, the title is "Who Were Ahead Of Their Time". Which Glee wasn't. The show aired during a time when having characters that were part of the LGBTQ+ community was fairly mainstream, no matter how big those story lines were. Nowadays you can't have a show without characters like that.
Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood and Doctor who: the first openly pansexual television character. Jack McPhee in Dawson's Creek, David Fisher in Six Feet Under, Dr. George Huang in SVU, Kerry Weaver in ER...
I think Jadzia Dax from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine should have been on the Top, or at least an honorable mention. A bisexual and "transgender" character (She wasn't technically trasgender but the symbiote Dax lived both as a man and a woman multiple times so that's something) was definitely impressive for the 90s.
Denise from twin peaks. I think she was the first (or one of the first) trans characters in any tv show. And whats most beautiful, it wasnt a problem to anyone.. Also Brian 💜
Oh come on! How could you not include Adam Torres from Degrassi? He was one of the first transgender characters on a teen drama. Also, a more recent example, Izzy Garcia from Power Rangers Dino Fury.
I definitely, positively agree that Jodie on Soap was ahead of its time and Brian Kinney from QAF was not only ahead of its time but FANTASTIC to stare at for five seasons (hot, hot, hot!! 🥵🥵) but wasn’t Kurt Hummel (et al) from Glee at least worthy of an Honorable Mention? Yes, by 2010, these was more visible gay representation on tv, but Glee had numerous main characters that happened to be both gay and fantastic singers. And it delved into issues like teen bullying, gay suicide, coming out in an extremely hostile environment, as well as Introducing a trans character & more gay characters as the show continued. It also had a gay couple - Klaine- that was so beloved by fans they were featured on covers of numerous magazines. And Chris Colfer won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Kurt during season 2. Perhaps your editors didn’t believe they were “ahead of their time” but they were such a huge phenomenon, it’s strange that they weren’t even mentioned in passing. IMPO. 🥰🥰
Jack and Ianto from Torchwood get ignored yet again. I mean, there is such little representation of masculine/ badass gay and bi men, Jack and Ianto are still ahead of their time.
Agreed. Although gay characters had been represented on daytime TV before, Bianca was the first character to have a long-lasting story instead of her character being a one-and-done character that was killed off or just left town. Being Erica Kane's daughter also put major focus on the character.
I was so hoping Jodie would be number one, though I was afraid he wouldn't, because not a lot of people know who is or know about Soap. He was the first openly gay character on TV and no one seems to talk about that. I recently did a whole video about him, to give him some representation.
Roseanne should have featured on here somewhere. A gay wedding on tv? Not one, not two, but at least 4 lgbtq+ characters on the same tv show in the 90s??? I mean damn
Spencer and/or Ashley from South of Nowhere definitely should've been on this list even as an honorable mention. South of Nowhere was one of the 1st teen shows where the MAIN, not side or supporting, but MAIN characters were part of lgbtq+ community. (if I'm wrong, I would love to know what was and also why wasn't it on this list either?) Also if there's a part 2 besides Spencer or Ashley the list should include: Marco, Alex, Paige, or Adam from Degrassi and Brittany, Santana, or Kurt from Glee. All these characters were technically ahead of their time, even if only by a couple of years
The Golden Girls had at least characters that were LGBT, Dorothy's college friend who was in love with her and Blanche's brother who was gay. Plus they always made comments about Sophia's son dressing in woman's clothing. Another character is Dreamer from Supergirl who is the first trans superhero.
I'm so happy to see this!!!! I wish they'd focus on sexual orientations that are newer I'm pansexual and I don't see that represented in the movies or tv series
very very inspiring great list I like it a lot very great job mis mojo one of my very favorite list ever ❤ thank you a lot for having Jack from dawson creek on this great list
I would have been very disappointed if Jodie had not been on the list. Glad to see he was #1. To anyone out there who has never seen Soap: watch Soap! It was brilliant.
SPOILER for Omar 'The Terror' Devon Little from 'The Wire' (RIP Michael K Williams): Almost strange that throughout the whole 5 seasons of the show, out of Omar's three boyfriends Brandon is the one with the feast episodes and yet he's the favourite of the fans - and most likely the love of Omar's life. I mean I know he was happy with Renaldo and Renaldo was a clear and definite improvement from Dante but we know how much Brandon meant to him. And we can't help but compare Dante to Brandon and we can't help but look more favourably towards Brandon, and not just because Brandon had prettier eyes.
What about Justin Suarez from Ugly Betty. He deserves to be on this list. He was way ahead of his time. He had a true battle with his sexuality. He wasn't sure what he was. Not to mention Marc who was a fellow gay man was there to help him through this very difficult and confusing time.
omar little from the wire and pacho herrera from narcos were both groundbreaking gay characters. they werent the stereotypical effeminate side characters. they were the most feared and deadly badasses which no one dared to cross.
Luke Snyder should've been included somewhere. I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that he was the first male gay teenager on daytime TV to have a kiss (on the soap opera As the World Turns). The actor that played him as also openly gay.
This is about pioneers. So Why isnt CJ Lamb's kiss with Abbey in LA Law mentioned. Not only was it one of the first kisses between 2 women on network TV but CJ was openly bisexual

Willow and Tara's relationship was the best, because there was no real emphasis on the fact that they were gay. Ofcourse it was mentioned, but it wasn't like: "Look, they're gay." and nothing else. It was just their relationship, natural and they happened to be gay.
Adam on Degrassi, Rosa on brooklyn 99, carol and susans wedding on friends, that episode of of degrassi junior high when caitlyn questioned her sexuality......

Yes, there had been gay characters in tv before…but I feel like Kurt was really the start of people becoming more comfortable seeing that on tv.
Kurt and Santana both
I’m shocked that Kurt from Glee and Cyrus from Andi Mack aren’t on here.
What about Carol and Susan from Friends? They got married on an episode that was released in 1996! How are they not on this list???
I'm glad that Jack from Dawson's Creek got at least an honorable mention because too many times he has been over looked.
First kiss (well, first one done out of love/affection, not as a gag) between 2 men ever on primetime TV! A huge, largely forgotten moment.
One of the ones that I expected was Marco was Degrassi. Because I love him so much. Don't get me wrong Adam and Claire are amazing.
@@gracebleekman2557 OMG.. Marco
@@ELmayberry yeah Marco is amazing.
@@gracebleekman2557 yesss 🥰
I was thinking about Degrassi the entire time. So much representation from even the earliest episodes like Marco and even Paige and Alex. But especially the later episodes where they explored other LGBTQIA characters like Adam, Rasha, Zane, Yael, and so many more.
It should be noted that Willow is a classic example of bi erasure, the series and the media apparently forgetting about her relationship with and love for Oz as well as other male characters she showed interest in in the earlier seasons.
THIS 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yeah , people always mention , how great Willow and Tara were , but seem to forget about Willow and Oz ! 😂I have never forgotten about Oz and wanted him and Willow back together . But it didn't happen . Ah well , I accepted Willow with Tara . Just to have them kill Tara . Even Josh Whedon makes mistakes . I didn't like Kennedy , sorry.😂
#1 has to be Willow and Tara. All these years later, Alyson and Amber still have people thank them for their performances.
GROSS!
@@lasonyasuttle6839 Back atcha.
I was so freaking out with the last Willow/Tara scene in this video because it STILL HURTS
Favorite gay representation in all of tv: Mickey and Ian on shameless.
This, 100%.
I’m still reeling over the recent news of Michael K Willams. RIP
Poor darling..
"I don't need to practice, I'm very good at it" AHAHHAHAHA
Rickie Vasquez was and will always be legendary 🌈❤️
Ian And Mickey from Shameless are an iconic gay couple on tv!!
You should do an animated variant too. Amity & Luz, The McBride dads, Korra & Asami
YES! And maybe Anne and Marcy.
I’m hoping that Santana and Kurt will be here also Marco from Degrassi.
Me too, Santana, Brittany and Kurt were so iconic! 🥰🏳️🌈
Paige and Alex as well.
They weren't quite as "ahead of their time" as the people in this list.
@@LucyAnne1 Santana was a latino teenage woman who came out as lesbian. In 2012, that was pretty groundbreaking!😃😅😊🏳️🌈
This video needs a part two! Jack from Torchwood, Glee, and more!
yesss
Surprised no glee characters on here! Especially Santana
Because they weren't ahead of their time. They're from an era where it was more accepted than during the shows mentioned.
@@izzle8208 true😂😂
@@izzle8208 Still, the title is "Who Were Ahead Of Their Time". Which Glee wasn't. The show aired during a time when having characters that were part of the LGBTQ+ community was fairly mainstream, no matter how big those story lines were. Nowadays you can't have a show without characters like that.
It's rather riveting seeing Omar Little from The Wire getting recognition on this list. R.I.P. Michael K. Williams 💔
My hope in life is now to have someone ask me if I'm a practicing homosexual just so that I can answer "I don't have to practice, I'm very good at it"
David and Keith’s relationship on Six Feet Under!
Omg yes!
Dr. Kerry Weaver’s story arc on ER was fantastic.
I'm livid she's not on here
@@zoetheexasperatedhistorian2516same! So many great characters on this list but Kerry’s self discovery and acceptance was so beautiful to watch.
Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood and Doctor who: the first openly pansexual television character. Jack McPhee in Dawson's Creek, David Fisher in Six Feet Under, Dr. George Huang in SVU, Kerry Weaver in ER...
We need a part 2 this is really great thank u happy bi week ❤💜💙🙏
Can you do a LGTBQ+ cartoon characters who were ahead of their time list please?
That would be nice if they existed
I think Jadzia Dax from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine should have been on the Top, or at least an honorable mention. A bisexual and "transgender" character (She wasn't technically trasgender but the symbiote Dax lived both as a man and a woman multiple times so that's something) was definitely impressive for the 90s.
Marco Delrossi (Degrassi), Stephanie Adams-Foster (The Fosters), and/or anyone from Pose should have been here
I came to the comments looking for this. How the heck is Marco not on the list!
Top 10 LGBT Couples that Did Not End Up Together
Yes because you can do Kurt and Blaine before they got married.
Sadly, most lgbt couples in shows and movies don’t end up together. A shorter list would be those that actually do.
IMO I think Willow and Tara should be higher up the list
There’s Blane Andersen, Kurt Hummel, Brittany Pierce and Santana Lopez all form Glee apart of the LGTBQ+ community at lest acknowledge that
Thank you!
Most of them aren't ahead of their time though.
How were they ahead of their time?
Matt Fielding from Melrose Place gets my vote
susan & carol from friends
The Owl House csrtoon on Disney is a great representation for kids and young teens. It's something I hadn't seen in before.
LGBTQIA+ forever!! 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈❤️❤️
Indeed
Great list but where is cam and Mitch from modern family
In what way were they 'ahead of their time'?
IMPO. 🥰🥰
RIP Michael K Williams.
Beverley La Salle from All In The Family
Yes❤
I'm glad that Brian Kenney made the list and Ricky from my so called life🌈
I LOVE Brian Kinney, and ALL of QAF!
I am surprised that Carol and Susan from "Friends" didn't make the list. The lesbian wedding alone deserved a mention.
Ms mojo is a good channel
I’ll like to add Marco from Degrassi
HELL YEAH! I was waiting for him to be mentioned. He should be on the list.
Marco is so damn underrated
Jack and Ianto from Torchwood get ignored yet again.
I mean, there is such little representation of masculine/ badass gay and bi men, Jack and Ianto are still ahead of their time.
Thats who i was thinking of girst. Jack is my icon.
probably because it focussed on american tv not british.
I would have put Bianca Montgomery on the main list.
Agreed. Although gay characters had been represented on daytime TV before, Bianca was the first character to have a long-lasting story instead of her character being a one-and-done character that was killed off or just left town. Being Erica Kane's daughter also put major focus on the character.
As a gay man I am glad that gays are on tv and that we are everywhere.
I love that you guys are still doing posts like this, but would you please mention or do a list about the show Eyewitnesses! It needs more love!
Was expecting Jack McPhee to be number one. Tut 🙄🙄🙄
RIP Michael K. Williams
I wish he got his flowers while he was still alive 😪❤
Greg and Terry From American Dad The funniest thing Stan didn't notice they were Gay until several episodes on
I was so hoping Jodie would be number one, though I was afraid he wouldn't, because not a lot of people know who is or know about Soap. He was the first openly gay character on TV and no one seems to talk about that. I recently did a whole video about him, to give him some representation.
That Brian McKinney line was Awesome
I remember being a kid when Ellen came out. It was a huge deal.... for some reason.
Bianca Montgomery from All My Children
Roseanne should have featured on here somewhere. A gay wedding on tv? Not one, not two, but at least 4 lgbtq+ characters on the same tv show in the 90s??? I mean damn
What about Ryan Phillipe as Billy Douglas on ONE LIFE TO LIVE in 1995?
queen as folk is so good
Spencer and/or Ashley from South of Nowhere definitely should've been on this list even as an honorable mention. South of Nowhere was one of the 1st teen shows where the MAIN, not side or supporting, but MAIN characters were part of lgbtq+ community.
(if I'm wrong, I would love to know what was and also why wasn't it on this list either?)
Also if there's a part 2 besides Spencer or Ashley the list should include: Marco, Alex, Paige, or Adam from Degrassi and Brittany, Santana, or Kurt from Glee.
Ian Gallagher from Shameless
I'm so happy to see this!!!! I wish they'd focus on sexual orientations that are newer I'm pansexual and I don't see that represented in the movies or tv series
very very inspiring great list I like it a lot very great job mis mojo one of my very favorite list ever ❤ thank you a lot for having Jack from dawson creek on this great list
I loved Soap! It was hilarious.
WHAT ABOUT LAFAYETTE?
Exactly
I would have been very disappointed if Jodie had not been on the list. Glad to see he was #1.
To anyone out there who has never seen Soap: watch Soap! It was brilliant.
How about Willa & A-spen from ZOMBIES 3?
Ahead of their time, that film isn't even a year old.
Laverne Cox is awesome. She is a hero.
R.I.P. Country Mac.
SPOILER for Omar 'The Terror' Devon Little from 'The Wire' (RIP Michael K Williams):
Almost strange that throughout the whole 5 seasons of the show, out of Omar's three boyfriends Brandon is the one with the feast episodes and yet he's the favourite of the fans - and most likely the love of Omar's life. I mean I know he was happy with Renaldo and Renaldo was a clear and definite improvement from Dante but we know how much Brandon meant to him. And we can't help but compare Dante to Brandon and we can't help but look more favourably towards Brandon, and not just because Brandon had prettier eyes.
Izzy Garcia AKA Green Dino Fury Ranger for the win! 💚🏳️🌈
What about Justin Suarez from Ugly Betty. He deserves to be on this list. He was way ahead of his time. He had a true battle with his sexuality. He wasn't sure what he was. Not to mention Marc who was a fellow gay man was there to help him through this very difficult and confusing time.
Billy Douglas - One Life to Live
Santana and Brittany from Glee maybe ?????
They forgot true blood and Roseanne
Brian Kinney. No one else comes close.
omar little from the wire and pacho herrera from narcos were both groundbreaking gay characters. they werent the stereotypical effeminate side characters. they were the most feared and deadly badasses which no one dared to cross.
Luke & Noah kiss on As The World Turns in 2007 was pretty ground breaking
Luke Snyder should've been included somewhere. I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that he was the first male gay teenager on daytime TV to have a kiss (on the soap opera As the World Turns). The actor that played him as also openly gay.
Adam Torres done dirty
This is about pioneers. So Why isnt CJ Lamb's kiss with Abbey in LA Law mentioned. Not only was it one of the first kisses between 2 women on network TV but CJ was openly bisexual
What about xena and gabrielle

Going back to my old comments and copy pasting them
Willow and Tara's relationship was the best, because there was no real emphasis on the fact that they were gay. Ofcourse it was mentioned, but it wasn't like: "Look, they're gay." and nothing else. It was just their relationship, natural and they happened to be gay.
i like when the goden girls do LGBTQ on the show
Of course there was also Nicole Haught, who in the heat of the 2016 "Kill Your Gays" slaughter was the only one to wear a bullet-proof vest.
What about melrose place? 90's matt fielding, played by Doug Savant. I know Matt wasn't gay but I loved his story line.

Stories
Story wise
I'm really only finding a lot of really good stories on Archive of Our Own which is AO3
I would recommend highly
Fade into you by sailorchiron ( au but more of a what if Michael never moved back to Roswell , Alex got to go to college and they meet there this is a good story you like long and plot-y but still in character.
Finding you by myrmidryad ( is so in character it hurts sometimes, it's a beautiful story again long a lot of plot and more of a what if senior year went different what if Alex never enlisted what if they went on a road trip with Liz and Max.)myrmidryad has another one about Shadow work or something like that amazing. It and that tell waking up slowly I think it was I would highly recommend as well.
No regrets if we walk this new Road by Andrealyn again we're talking an alternative to senior year Roses Dead and Max has some choices to make and he decides to take them all to college. Beautifully done Max becomes a doctor instead of a cop. Michael is an engineer and a teacher. Fairly sure he's also a physicist but I might be wrong the story focuses a lot on Max's narrative but there's also shifts where we shift to Michael's perspective to find out what's going on with him and Alex and it's just really well done beautiful story.
Every traveler please come home by Andrealyn I say on my proper list that this is what time travel should really be like. Basically fixing what's broken and making things better than living with it. Bad explanation Amazing Story. In Canon and still a u in amazing
The cost of greatness by bestillmyslashyheart and reachedthebitterend( oh yeah I do believe this Falls more under spitefic but I love it)
When the person you take a bullet for by Author:reachedthebitterend( memory loss Alex loses his memory, and is very intent on killing pod Squad) amazing
Appetite for Destruction by Lambourn -oh god yes sat post season 3 and is amazing( basically the kind of story I wanted to read where Michael's dealing with the Fallout over being able to mind control people. And being a reluctant super powerful being. He and Alex are adorable.
JoCarthage has some amazing stuff that tackles with PTSD and season 1 TV rewrites and it's pretty good so go check her stuff out.
Nostalgia's a bitch by mythras_fire( I'm going to say that it's right before creep that it's set. Even though by the end of this story they acknowledge that part of the storyline. But because so very little was known about Michael and Alex's background this person wrote and their own narrative as to who Alex was and it's really good I really enjoyed this Au background for Alex.
Moving Forward
By laniew1 so set before creep season one- again and takes a really wild turn before coffee and it's kind of a crossover with the OG show. It goes its own way but it's amazing. Highly recommend)
Fall back into place by jule1122 also locked I think but I do love all of her stuff I would highly recommend her stories.
Contractual obligations by nestra( in a world where Alex gets Michael as a companion LOL kind of prostitution. But I ain't mad at it because it's a good story. Jesus really good story. Alex is coming back from Iraq and meet Michael who will be His companion and drive him to places and help him. Bad explanation Amazing Story)
The truth hurts by bestillmyslashyheart( Liz accidentally doses everyone in pod s with something like equivalent of truth serum lol.)
5 years from now by
Title:Five Years From Now
By mansikka( basically an alternative to season 1) also you really do need to be a member of archive our own to read this because she blocks her fics only ao3 members can read them and I try to recommend people that have open accounts but every now and again you might run into someone so try to get a membership at super easy you put in your email and they send you an invitation and you make an account it's usually within a week or so after you put it in.
A Roswell Christmas wedding by Manesalex ( major character desk for the first part of this story but time travel and fixing said character death. Highly recommend the story even as Bleak as it sounds) Okay real warnings here Jesse essentially beats Alex to death it isn't super graphic and explanation but Michael fixes it. But he's got to find out about it and it's kind of like it's your life and the one Christmas Carol only the time travels real. A really good story and I don't do angst or drama much. Manesalex also locked to Archive our own Members Only
