      Like the exterior, some of the interior. Not good or practical from passenger point of view. Good for commute or city driving! Not for long drive on motorway! Would have been better if had range of 200 plus miles ! 125 miles is just for local drive.

    Here in the UK the MX-30 had not so good reviews because of the short range, but I think it is a great alternative to smaller city-focused EVs like Honda e and MINI Electric which have similar range and price. Also you have the benefit of Mazda's great design and a taller crossover-style. However it is not a practical alternative to more expensive crossover EVs like Kia e-Niro and Peugeot e2008 because of small range and small rear seats. Many people in cities still prefer a crossover so I hope Mazda MX-30 will be successful. Great review by the way, I like how much detail you put in and use common sense to make conclusions.

    Once again Mazda proved here that their designer is top notch, never fail to deliver the best outcome of every model including this first EV in their fleet. The interior is as good as the cx-30 if not better.👌 👌 😀 😀

    A very competent and fair analysis review of the MX-30 by Thomas. Thank you. I’m totally smitten by this unique Crossover SUV Coupe styled BEV, and despite the initial reservations about the 35.5kWh Battery range, I’ve completely come to my senses and realised I don’t ever need more than that range in my present lifestyle - I’m perfectly okay with that.
    Home charging is an absolute necessity - unless you live virtually next door to a row of charging stations or you’ve got charging readily available at work.
    Home charging at 6.6kW/h is the key to exploiting this vehicle to the fullest.
    I’ve even considered the MX-30 R-EV over this one - that has a 50 litre fuel tank and a 0.8L Wankel Rotary Generator - giving almost 400 miles in conjunction with the reduced 17.5kWh battery.
    It’s an interesting option - but I’d still rather prefer the MX-30 EV instead - unless I regularly needed to travel longer distances between charger points.
    This IS a car I want. The 2nd hand values are already calling out to me.
    Disclosure: in late 2004, I purchased a 1998 Mazda MX-3 1.6i DOHC Coupe; it had already had 5 owners (all the same family) and had only 33k miles on the clock.
    I drove it for 8.5 years before parting with it at 77k miles. Nothing went wrong. Nothing broke. And it was hands down the most exotic head turning vehicle I had ever owned.
    I still miss it.
    I can see that same quality build in the MX-30 - that’s my next car.
    Thank you for a great review!

    Mazda interiors are really great. They're very good quality and have high quality finishes and good build quality. Even the switches and knobs feel good quality. Better than some premium carmakers. I think Mazda have overtaken VW now for mainstream premium interiors. Usually Japanese car interiors are not great. They're plasticy and cheap feeling but Mazda is different. Whoever is in charge of Mazda interiors, they need to be commended for a job well done.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 3 года назад +4

      Mazda would be glad to read this comment. Mazda has spent a lot of research and development into driver interactions. Everything from how a driver can perceive a font (which is one reason Mazda changed to two consistent fonts - one marketing, and one for human interaction), to the position of vertebrae on seat cushions. One part of this branch is what Mazda calls "shokkaku", which translates to "sense of touch".
      Kenta Kubo from Mazda is an associate professor of psychology who was hired to deal with this very problem. Along with several engineers including, Asami Yonezawa they want to answer the question: What constitutes good touch? And how can you measure something so subjective? The point Mazda wanted to determine was what type and amount of force is required to operate any switch and how much feedback should be provided back to make its use ideal.
      Kubo utilised the Russell’s Circumplex Model of Affect, a psychological emotional model to determine how Mazdas switches should feel. Kubo explained in interviews, “Everyone’s perception of touch is different. That’s why we used this model - how much force is needed to get an appealing click.”
      Kubo said, “If a button is too active you become exhausted, too smooth you become bored. We wanted an ‘up’ value that felt extremely pleasant”.
      They developed the new button feel over several years and it was first seen on the new Mazda 3.
      Google "Asami Yonezawa" and "shokkaku" and there are more interesting stories describing how much effort they have gone into.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 3 года назад +1

      @@inodesnet Interesting. I know premium carmakers do this with fonts and ergo seats and their switches are tuned to require 1 Newton of force or something like that. Never seen a mainstream carmaker do it. So good on Mazda. The new CX5's interior was really nice when I sat in one. I was very surprised.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 3 года назад +2

      @@SDav21 there are many wonderful differences and quite a few similarities between Japanese and German cultures that make their way from a way they live their life through to how they produce something.
      I spend a lot of time with family in Japan, so I am more familiar with how they live and work.
      I think one particular life philosophy they have I love is to know that perfection is a life goal (i.e. no one is perfect, you get better and improve as you practice your profession or art).
      But they have a black and white, almost clinical approach to how things are done which can unfortunately remove soul and sensation from the things they produce.
      The Koreans are a little more free thinking, but they have always turned to European design centres to put a bit of life into the look of their products.
      Mazda's wake up call was when Ford decided to dump and run to save money back in 2010. It allowed them to completely reinvent themselves which involved a lot of cleansheet, R&D, engineering work on engines (none of them follow the lead from others). They even completely changed the location of engineers and designers to be side by side with new software to ensure that both seamlessly fed into each other.
      But the focus on the human aspect was a master stroke.
      The last time I was at Mazda HQ in Hiroshima (2019), I happened to be there on the day Mazda invited Mazda car mechanics from around the world for a car repair competition (for record, the Australian team won the competition).
      But I overhead some of the US team talking about how impressed they were about feed back loops.
      For one particular issue, from reporting the issue to Mazda in Japan to having a fix be engineered, tested and onto production vehicles took under 7 months.
      That's impressive in itself!
      Some car makers would wait until a revised model to insert a change into the production line. Mazda was treating the production line like a software engineer would code. That's true continuous improvement.

    I have 3 problems:
    a. from B pillar on ear level, there is a humming constant noise
    b. the back visibility sideways, because of the tiny rear door is limited, and a bit annoying in the city traffic
    c. the charging cables have no reservoir in the trunk under the floor mat

      Same here. Leather makes no sense where I live in sub-tropical Australia since it is often very hot to touch, does not breath as well (sweating!) and is generally less comfortable since it does not conform to the body as well. Yet nearly always buyers demand it on higher priced cars without even thinking since it is historically an indicator of luxury.

    • @timotmon
      @timotmon 3 года назад +3

      @inodesnet 3 года назад +1

      It's interesting you mention the Q3. Autobild in Germany has one of the world's toughest tests on a car; it's Dauertest (endurance test). They purchase cars, drive them for 100,000km and service regularly, then dismantle the car into every single nut, bolt and panel to analyse wear and tear. Since they switched to a new style test in 2014, the Audi Q3 has proved to be their second least reliable vehicle. Two Mazda's rate very highly in the test however. The CX-5 wear and tear was compared to the Q3 stating that the Audi seemed to appear to have worn more than double the 100,000km (i.e. low durability) whereas the CX-5 seemed to have done half the distance, suggesting Mazda had chosen more durable component. To be fair to Audi though, some of their cars actually do very, very well in the new post 2014 rankings. However in the 15 years prior to this, Mazda had a couple of cars that we unique in that they were among a very small number of cars that Autobild deemed to be faultless in terms of reliability (their system rates cars by giving points to cars that have faults, recalls or abnormal wear and tear - almost every single vehicle had at least a couple of things over 100,000km).

    Kleiner Input zum Thema Fahrwerk:
    Schaut man sich die Impulserhaltung an, wird ein schweres System (das Fahrzeug) weniger stark durch ein sich bewegendes Objekt (die Räder, welche zudem durch die Federn und Dämpfer gebremst werden) in Bewegung versetzt, als ein leichteres System.
    Impuls=Masse*Geschwindigkeit
    Um ein schweres Fahrzeug also ebenso anzuregen wie ein leichteres, müssen die Räder entweder deutlich schwerer sein oder deutlich schneller in Richtung Fahrzeug aufsteigen oder weniger gefedert oder weniger gedämpft werden.
    Grundsätzlich liegen z.B. beladene Fahrzeuge deshalb erstmal "satter" auf der Straße.

I've recently spoken to one of the product managers of Mazda (who is an old friend of mine) and he told me that there's an inline 6 RWD Mazda 6 with at least 400hp in the works, and it will be in production by the beginning of 2021. And considering how fun to drive the mx 30 is, that new 6 will be a spicy competition to the BMW M5. I can't wait!!!

    This will be a great second car as range is more than sufficient for most daily needs and if you have a longer range car then the small battery makes perfect sense. Alternatively if you only need long range once or twice a year then hire a car or take the train. The interior looks superb, much better than Tesla and Mazda make sweet handling cars. And the price looks attractive and pretty competitive with ICE alternatives. Given the eco impact of battery production and end of life, plus the weight I think companies like Mazda are correct in getting people to think about the range they need rather than carrying a huge battery they use once or twice a year.

    One of the best, if not the BEST review of this car. Danke for a long an thorough review. Having been 100% EV driver now for the past 7 years, we've ordered the MX-30 to replace my wife's 2017 VW eUP. Yes, the range is so/so, but do you really need 300 km + for the second car? (Just changed my 4th Tesla with a Mercedes EQC). No... so as long as you do a thorough analysis of your daily need, believe the MX-30 is a great choice. Price is good, looks stunning, very comfortable, quiet and good chassi. Overall a winner at this price.

    Good point about the regen braking safety and the fact that you’re instantly braking the moment you take your foot off the accelerator. I used to drive a 2 tonne Daihatsu tip truck and when that thing was empty, it was a hilarious amount of fun to drive and a big part of the fun was the exhaust braking which allowed going deeper into corners before actually braking. Great insight Mr Thomas.

      Most people are extremely overrating numbers like range and charging speed. In reality for most people those numbrs are irrelevant since they simply charge at night and don't drive more than 150 km per day anyways. For those people a smaller battery is much better. For most people big batteries are a huge waste of resources (lithium production is very harmful and limited).

It’s flawed, confusing and defies convention but you know what? That’s okay. Let’s view this as something different and while Mazda got drunk in the conception stage they did pour love into this car in fact they are proud of it. It drives very well, has an engineered feel and shows the mainstream how to build a car. It’s a bullseye just moved to a different position on the dartboard. Going to be a huge bargain soon as a competent city car and I’ll definitely buy one! Keep up the great work! 💪

    Quality finishes - as to be expected from the Japanese manufacturers .
    A definite plus is ALL the Standard equipment... and here in Germany after the Government and manufacturer Discounts the total Price is VERY attractive ( Under 24.000 Euros).
    On the Downside ....
    As a current EV driver for more than a year now , I fear that the Public Charging Station Infrastructure will very shortly not be able to cope with demand . In the last 3 -4 Months I see a larger amount of EVs on the road and I now TOO often find my "usual" Charging Stations occupied with another vehicle charging .
