- HPD is still searching for a man who was driving a dark colored sedan that hit a 27-year-old woman near Sunset Beach on Wednesday, July 24, around 7:30 p.m. and then took off.

I think it’s more than anti-tourist. It is anti-people. I’m 68 yo local seen and experienced locals drive right up to my legs. Some were inattentive but majority were looking at me and mutter something with a disgusted expression. Everything is about them, right or wrong.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been harassed, assaulted, road raged at, so I’ve come to the conclusion that some people are ignorant narcissists and care not for anyone but themselves. It’s not so much a specific group unless the group is ignorant narcissists. It happens everywhere.
That driver must be watching this and hope his shitting his pants waiting to be identified.

Pedestrians have right-of-way. Period. Idc about the why this happened only that the person that hit her KNEW they just broke the law otherwise, why drive off? Ppl want to get mad and that's ok. Sorry to hear this happen to the woman. Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery. Get people like that. There are no side walks where I live and the area next to the road is often over grown. Most cars that pass will give me a wide birth when I am walking. Then there are those who will come really close to me, honk their horns real long, yell obscenities, or throw things. The real trip is its just one block away from the Pearl City Police station.
Yup, this island not the same as when I grew up in the 80s and 90s. Now days people on the road are way more nutz.

Sorry this happened to her. Hawaii ranks second in most dangerous state for pedestrians. High number of pedestrian fatalities in Hawaii. Been like this for a long time. Cars don’t yield for pedestrians. That’s why always have to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings

Years ago on Kauai I was in a crosswalk along with a couple of women one of whom was in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank. A driver who had plenty of time to stop instead drove through forcing us to stop midway. I filed a complaint at the police department and the officer said you have to pay attention. The law is not ambiguous. It hasn’t gotten better and it’s pretty much the same throughout the state.

Cannot trust drivers to stop. Need to check both ways before and during any road crossings. Too easy to be distracted or otherwise careless while driving. Not as easy to be a careless pedestrian, just no match for a vehicle in the scheme of things. Sorry for the young lady!!

I taught my kids when you’re crossing with a bunch and you know you won’t make it, don’t cross. Don’t try to follow. It’s safer to wait. If you hesitate, it’s too late. Always have eye contact with the driver not the car.

why does no one ask any questions? Was she crossing when a car was passing? why did she not wait? regardless of whether a vehicle is speeding or not do you not have any common sense to wait till there are no cars even remotely present? These are some basic things to be held accountable for.

I need more description of the incident. Were they crossing expecting an oncoming car to stop? I usually wait for the oncoming car to slow down or wave me to cross. I don’t just force them to stop by entering the road.
@@prst99this is true. Even though the law says that the pedestrians have the right of way there is also a law that says pedestrians need to follow the law too. Don’t J-Walk. And in on the other side of the coin it’s common sense to look both ways. Never believe that the car should stop because you see it. But does the DRIVER SEE You? And then if the Car doesn’t STOP. THEN DON’T GO! STAY! Until it’s clear!

This is unfortunate but it is also our responsibility to make sure we don’t put ourselves in unsafe situations because we have no control over what others do. Just because it’s Hawaii, North Shore, aloha spirit, blah blah, doesn’t mean everyone is nice. There are crazy people everywhere.
I’m pretty positive the driver didn’t speed up intentionally like her friend claims. They probably were all not paying attention crossing in an unmarked crosswalk and it’s just an accident. Dude shouldn’t have left the scene tho

Your supposed to travel in the same direction as traffic, with your back facing incomming vehicles, at least when your on a bicycle, etc. I never liked that idea!!!
