    A Common occurrence with late model BMW 3&5 series yet BMW still refuses to admit there’s a problem. I’ve been working on them since 1978 and since about 2003 I’ve been fixing lots of electrical connectors that have gotten so hot they’ve melted, for awhile there it was mostly the tail light connector but it seems they’ve been migrating forward around the Brake Master cylinder and various other spots.

    4 year or older BMW's need the valve cover gasket changed. They leak right onto the alternator and the harness. That will catch fire after you shut it off because there is no air moving, keeping the fire out. As for the ones parked for days, no idea. I own 2 and work on them, this is from experience. I had 1 catch on fire when I went into a store. Seen smoke, popped the hood and put out the fire. Tore it apart and the front drivers side corner of the valve cover was pouring a lot of oil out right onto the aforementioned parts that are hot enough to start a fire.

    You wonder how a car like this could erupt in flames so fast and so completely from one end to the other. It must have been a gasoline fuel pump failure, or the car's gas tank was somehow ruptured and the spilled gasoline set the whole car on fire. If it was simply parked there and the fire started on its own, you wonder how that could happen. So, the question is - was this car set on fire deliberately by its owner or somebody walking past it - or did the fire start by itself?
    It was so badly burned by the time the fire squad showed up to be able to figure out who or what started it.

    Seems fair to say that that particular BMW didn't have too promising a future, judging by how it looked after the blaze was extinguished - not exactly the BEST candidate for a rehab, a set of new tires and a fresh coat of paint.

    I remember the days when cars were made of steel (frame and body) and fires would not be allowed to spread because the steel body would contain the flames. Now, cars melt and allow the flames to get way out of control. Ridiculous. This is why I own an old truck.
    Nice camera work and good firefight.

    • @SLO_5oh
      @SLO_5oh 3 года назад +23

      I also remember the days when steel frame and body built vehicles had a higher fatality rate due to less inner impact resistant material and they caught fire much more easily. Take your pick though, more impact resistance and lower fatalities with a lesser chance of catching fire or a higher fatality rate that caught fire more often but contained the flames.

      Cars do not blow like people think they do. There is a lot of misconceptions about car fires and explosions like gas tanks. An tank with fumes is more likely to "blow" than a full tank because it's the fumes that react. The reality is cars don't blow up very often at all

    Back in 2012 I was driving on 75 through rural Ohio and witnessed an 18-wheeler truck burn for a long time since it was miles away from any fire station. All the tires burned and the cab was consumed to nothing. The only way to describe what was left was an ashy rectangular metal frame with six tire rims.
