Tell your wife thanks for letting you post this video even though she didn't want you to. I think you helped save a lot of people from buying a new machine! :-)
Tell your wife your viewers are thanking you for the information you passed on. I never thought that it was coming from the top part of the washer. This was so helpful. Thanks
First....I am a DIY husband. Not a professional. My washer was doing several things. Dancing across floor on spin cycle, agitating when filling, but most of all it smelled! Your video is the most accurate when it comes to curing the odor. Because of the repairs I had to make I actually removed the inner tub. Yuk... the grime and mold was terrible. would love to share the pictures. I have it back together and it is running great. Oh yeah. Now it smells like new :-) Thanks for the help. And everyone else. You are wasting your time thinking that you can run something through the machine to clean it. You have to take it apart and clean it. Again. Thanks.
Thank You,ThanK You, Thank You! I've seen many videos informing me of what the problem could be but yours is ONLY ONE I found showing me how to fix it! I knew running bleach &vinegar wouldn't get rid of this mess! I really wanted to take care of it BEFORE it started stinking! Please tell your wife THANK YOU, from this wife trying to DIY in KC!
Thanks. This approach saved our washer -- a little diluted bleach and a few hours work instead of new machine. Only thing I would add is that I put a small hand mirror inside the white perforated drum and saw yet more mold on underside of top lip. Our machine has these small compartments there, I think designed to reduce splashing and sloshing ... but those small pockets also retain some lint and detergent and mold. Sprayed with diluted bleach bottle. Then flushed it out using a garden hose and spray nozzle turned upward. If you do it carefully the water all runs back into washer drum. Just do another rinse cycle to get rid of dirty water.
Thank you so much!! After seeing this video I knew this was exactly what was happening to us. However my husband wasn't too enthused that I made him help me at midnight 😂 we had a scentless machine by 1 am ✨ thanks again!
Thank you for this video!!! I thought it was a sewer problem and I took part of the wall apart to make sure there was a plumbing trap (there was). I didn't realize the washer could come apart so far to be cleaned. All is good now. Thinking about opening a washing machine cleaning business ha ha
Thank you so much for posting this. Thank your wife for her generosity too. It is really really helpful to see what is causing the stink. Getting my "washing machine repairman" hat on now.
I have a Maytag that is 22 years old and never been thoroughly cleaned. I took the top ring off and dang near puked! What a mess! Thanks for posting this. It is a big help! :-)
THANK YOU!!!! 😘 Started noticing horrible stinky water when doing laundry. Causing our clothes to sink like cesspool and needing to be re-washed! I did some research also and tried the vinegar and Borax cleaning suggestion. The wash was good for a little while but it came back! 😈 After thinking about it, I realized the problem was really bad when no wash was done for several days? I never thought to take the drum top off. I have a feeling it would make sense for the nasty, dry, hard water, phosphate impregnated crude to become "really stinky" after getting wet again! Wish me luck 🍀!
OMG THIS IS IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. I live in a 22 apts building and share 4 washers and 4 dryers laundry room. They are disgusting and ruins clothes. I hate doing laundry here the past 4 years. Normally I love doing laundry. I will be doing this ASAP. I am not the manager here (above his pay grade) but the tenants will appreciate this. They come to me for things to fix. I have an amoire (big tv cabinet) that holds all my tools etc.
OMG thank you so very much I knew it was something gross like that stinky mold to be making my house smell bad. You were so right . Thanks for all the information. SO happy to not have a stinky machine anymore. THanks for telling it like it is and sharing so much.
Thank you for making this video! That smell was driving me nuts! I was worried that we would have to cough up the money and go out and buy a new washer when the one we have works just fine, but smells! Tell your wife it just goes to show that she's a busy woman doing laundry all the time! 🙂
Thanks so much, just in the middle of the same thing. Ours was given to us by a friend. Finally got mad enough at the problem to start taking it apart. This helps to focus on problem areas. Thanks again for posting brother, have a great day!
Thank you for this video!! very hel[pful. I've been told all my life, You will never get rid of any bad smell by masking it, you have to remove what ever is causing the odor. I like you video - If it makes your wife feel any better it was very helpful and we all have hidden icky stuff in our washers. I think you should make more videos like this . Hat off to you !!
Thanks so much. I had the same problem, same age washer, tried the bleach and vinegar treatments with no luck. Then I found or video and here we go. Thanks again for saving me a service call, and for the powder vs liquid detergent info!
Maaaaaaaaaaan!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!!!! I just got a free washer and it was about to get tossed, just put all sorts of cleaners on it, it's at good as new
Good god thank you i never thought about this. Your a very clever man. You justed helped a lot of people a lot of money. I was aboit to go buy a new washer.
OMG... I want to barf. We are living in an apartment that is about 8-9 years old, and noticed recently that the washer was stinky. It's probably the one installed with the apartment so about that age. I've tried all the usual Google suspects - bleach, vinegar, baking soda. To no avail. I ran across this video, which I showed hubby. He pried the top open to the washer and looked, and it was worse than yours. >.< Since we are renting, there's no way we are going to tear this thing apart - it doesn't belong to us, not to mention no room and we're on the 3rd floor. He called the office and told them they have to clean it out or replace it. It's disgusting! They're coming Tuesday. Thank you for posting this, even if your wife was grossed out, lol. Obviously, it's a real issue!
Omggggg thank you soooo much i would have never guessed what the heck is that smell that i cant get rid off. I am off to scrape off all that gunk out! You sir saved me from buying a new one! You are fantabulous!
Thanks so much for the amazing video!!! I have used OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder & Melaleuca Melapower 6x Liquid Detergent since I bought my Kitchenaid Superba washing Machine in 2002....because the tea tree oil in the liquid detergent should be removing all of this "stuff" out of the machine as well as cleaning my clothes. I will let you know what I find when I take my washing machine apart next week!!!
Thank you for posting. I’m a Sanitary clean freak 🧼 however, it’s always so satisfying watching these kinds of videos. Now I just cleaned my washer. I seen this video once I turned on the circle. Now, I will get my hubby to do this to our washer. 🙏
omg that was great video!! best one ive seen so far. the vinegar and baking soda method didnt work to good for my washer at all. this video seemed like great idea. so i tried it and worked great. good job
Thank you soo much for the info on the liquid et powder detergent! Makes so much sense. I have a samsung top load washing machine also and only 2-3 years and sometimes after a self wash there would be kinda greasy little particules.I also have a sceptic tank. I use a sachet of detergent for dishwasher once in awhile a found that it helps out alot!
Thank you so much! I knew there was more too it than just running bleach through it! I have done that and it smells better for about a day and then stinks again! I need to either clean it like you did or buy another washer!
I really appreciate your how-to, here. I am trying to destinkify (from fabric softener -- hate that stuff!) my washer I just got used from Craigslist. I have been trying to figure out how to get at the parts I can't reach, and you have cracked the case for me. Thank you! A tip for marital happiness: don't mock your wife on RUclips. Hope that helps!
i really appreciate your help, my wife was already at lowes looking for a new washer machine and she probably hates your video but it’s ok you save me some bucks
Tell ur wife THANK U for not talking u out of posting this because it is a life saver AND money saver because I was 1hr away from chucking the whole washer...BUT I'm going to see how far I get into this process and possibly SAVE my washer .. Thanks again
Good lord! I bought this fixer-upper dump with a Maytag washer and decided to get it going but it smelled like a cow fell in and died. Your vid gave me confidence to take it apart and clean it. Man, it only takes a little bit of build up to make a BIG smell. Now it runs great and no smells. This house I've lived in for 21 has a washer I bought brand new 21 years ago. I have never cleaned it, I have never done anything to it and it has "0" smells. I became curious about my 21 year old washer and how it works compared to the one from the dump and noticed it needs a new belt so I will finally have to do something to that one. I've always used perfume-free, powdered Arm&hammer in that 21 washer, but the dump I bought has a septic, I have to look into the comment you made about that. Thanks for posting the vid.
Holy hell, thanks so much for this video. I bought my first washer a month ago and it was used. Smelled fine at first but eventually started to REEEEAAK. I tried the bleach/water or vinegar/water cycles and nothing worked. When I pulled it apart i found same thing as yours. About 1/8" layer of nasty gunk. Now everything smells great (like a swimming pool)! Thanks again.
Thank you! Omg. I’m so glad u posted this. I could not believe what my washer looked like. It was insane. Just as bad as your washer. Thank u again! Tell ur wife it’s ok obviously most of us have this problem. Lol. I would have never thought to do this. So thanks again.
My Whirlpool Cabrio is stinking and I will try this. It upsets me that this problem is occurring and they haven't posted anything on their system about it. I wanna get a new washer, but I guess it will happen with a new one too!!! UGH!!! Thank you!!!!
Thank you very much for the video it was an eye opener and I have the same problem going to try it out and I am sure it will work. Let your wife know that it was a great help.
I just saw your video today. I did this to my Maytag years ago and I hate doing it but this is going to be my 5th time around. Don't know if there's a problem with this brand or same thing happens to others...but next time I will change brand and will go for a front loader....and will try alternating between liquid and powder detergents as well trying to avoid big loads.
Mine is four yrs. old, and I am lookin to take it apart. Thanks for sharing your idea's. I can not live with odor. I use he soap and clean my lines. That does not get the dirt out of a top end loader.. My mission continues, tell your wife no worries. Knowing is half the battle.
omg thank you so much for sharing this, you've so saved me from wasting my time trying a million and one things that didn't solve my stinky washer problem. I just want to say I think you ARE FUCKING AWESOME FOR POSTING THIS AND SHARING THIS WITH THE WORLD . AND TO THE FUCKIN HATERS OUT THERE SAYING JUST GET A NEW ONE , NOT EVERYONE CAN JUST GO OUT AND BUY A NEW ONE SOME OF US HAVE TO GET OUR F'N HANDS DIRTY EVERY NOW AND THEN. BUT I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND IF YOU WOULDNT KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT THAT
Excellent video I think you did an exceptional job! oh another thing don't use softener Liquid softener solidifies and sticks to the tub use instead like Downey towels in the dryer don't use liquid softener.
That was SO disgusting, thank you! LOL. Both my washing machine & dryer have died in the last week and I've been shopping for new ones but all the 'modern' washers seem to have this mold problem. Hey Robin this is my same situation looking to buy a new set, which brand did you end up getting and are you having these same issues or all good so far?
Yep. That's us. Maytag with a few years on it, liquid detergent, septic... Our washer smells like a swamp. :-( We also wash most things on cold, and do lots of half-loads. Our washer is smart enough to know how much laundry is in it, and only fills halfway. So the top half doesn't get rinsed out like it might with lots of full loads on hot. Hmm... Thank you for your video. I think Sunday afternoon is going to involve dragging the washer out onto the driveway and tearing it apart. Joy.
Thanks..however, I've repaired washers 20 yrs old that Never had this problem 🤔...So many "variables"...e.g..the "Front Loader", possible house vent pipes, clogged drains..etc...could be a combination of all these things...Thank you sir ! 👍
In a few months it may start to smell that will be all that gunk on the inside of the outer tube.Remove the spin basket and agitator then clean the plastic tube watch for new life forms.
Thanks fireman7753! You're awesome! This video was excellent. Thanks for being thorough and really explaining things. I'll be taking your advice this weekend!
Damn it!!! ...... Looks like I will be taking apart my washer tonight, thank for the video! I have tried everything from running empty loads with hot water/bleach and nothing will get rid of the smell. I have a feeling this is the problem I have...
Depending on where you live you might be able to do a grey water system and use washer water out in your yard to water trees but if that isn't an option we use Ariel laundry powder detergent and it's phosphate free
Tell your wife thanks for letting you post this video even though she didn't want you to. I think you helped save a lot of people from buying a new machine! :-)
yabby4 thanks!
I agree as well ,, thank you

yep removing the tub is the best way, it has been a few yrs, mine stinks so i throw everything in the back of the truck and go to the power wash.
And 9 years later.....this is still valuable!!!!!! I am thankful for your video.......I'm also dreading the project ahead of me 😅😳
Still helping us almost 9 years later! Thank you!
You are the only video I could find showing how to fix the problem. Thank you so much.

Leslie Prieto Your welcome. I am glad I was able to help.
I have a Kenmore mine was stinking up the whole house pull it apart and cleaned .What a relief thanks for your good video
Even after 8 years, still helping man. Thanks!!

I cant wait to clean my moms washing machine. She is going to be so happy! Thanks man!
Good to know about the liquid detergent. I never thought of that
I have a Maytag that is 22 years old and never been thoroughly cleaned. I took the top ring off and dang near puked! What a mess! Thanks for posting this. It is a big help! :-)
THANK YOU for this! I just went and got myself a tub spanner wrench and will be ripping my stinky 14 year old machine apart next month!
I'm so glad I stumbled upon this video. I'm gonna give it a shot! I do hope you'll start posting videos again!

Thanks for the clip it was helpful. We use liquid detergent and add baking soda as a booster which usually works well.
Thank you for posting this video. My machine is about 20 years old and I hate to see what is in mine. But I will tackle it .

Buddy, that helped me soooooo much. Tell your wife that you are a genius for sharing this video
Thanks for the video. When you run your cleaning load/Wash drain it in a bucket so it's not going to your septic tank
I need a man like you!
I really appreciate your how-to, here. I am trying to destinkify (from fabric softener -- hate that stuff!) my washer I just got used from Craigslist. I have been trying to figure out how to get at the parts I can't reach, and you have cracked the case for me. Thank you!

Hey, that was really well done and interesting! Thanks for doing it.
This worked for us. Not that hard to do. Thanks for posting.
THANK YOU! Same washer and same problem. I'll give it a try.

Yes!!! That’s probably a LOT more common than we would expect. I’m certain that’s why mine stinks so bad. Thank you!!! I’m going to give it a go!!
Did it. Almost exactly the same as your video. Smell is gone. Wooohooo!! It was sooooo gross, but worth the disgusting work!!!
just cleaned our washer.. YUK! all clean now.
My Whirlpool Cabrio is stinking and I will try this. It upsets me that this problem is occurring and they haven't posted anything on their system about it. I wanna get a new washer, but I guess it will happen with a new one too!!! UGH!!! Thank you!!!!
Thanks for the great video. We have the same washer and had the exact same problem.
Awesome. I have the same brand. Stinks and makes my clothes and my kids clothes stink. My washers about the same age. 2011 we bought it.
This is the type of thorough cleaning I live for...It's the little things.
Thank you very much for the video it was an eye opener and I have the same problem going to try it out and I am sure it will work. Let your wife know that it was a great help.

thanks for posting! a great help!! did the regular powder trick help?
Thank you! This was sooooo helpful! I too found some really gross goodies in mine!
5 years later, still helping people!
I know what I am doing this Friday! Thank you!
Thank you for airing your dirty laundry for the good of all things clean lol. Thank you huge help!!
U r awesome-thanks for making this video! I found mold in our washer as well! THANKS A TON!!!
That was SO disgusting, thank you! LOL. Both my washing machine & dryer have died in the last week and I've been shopping for new ones but all the 'modern' washers seem to have this mold problem. It looked fairly easy to clean all that gunk so I'm slightly less concerned as I go forward with my purchases. Tell your wife I appreciate you sharing your nastiness and there's no judging going on! :-)
Hey Robin this is my same situation looking to buy a new set, which brand did you end up getting and are you having these same issues or all good so far?
Yep. That's us. Maytag with a few years on it, liquid detergent, septic... Our washer smells like a swamp. :-(
We also wash most things on cold, and do lots of half-loads. Our washer is smart enough to know how much laundry is in it, and only fills halfway. So the top half doesn't get rinsed out like it might with lots of full loads on hot. Hmm...

Thank you for sharing I am having the same problem and tried the same things . :)
THANK YOU!!!! Oh man, my machine is finally going to get fixed now!
Thank you for video tapping this and GREAT info....Thanks man

Thank you! I'll have to try this.
Damn it!!! ...... Looks like I will be taking apart my washer tonight, thank for the video! I have tried everything from running empty loads with hot water/bleach and nothing will get rid of the smell. I have a feeling this is the problem I have...
Guess I’ll be doing this tonight! Thank you!
Thank you. I have that same washer and have that same task ahead today. Shuddering.
Depending on where you live you might be able to do a grey water system and use washer water out in your yard to water trees but if that isn't an option we use Ariel laundry powder detergent and it's phosphate free
