I blamed the director Mark Robson for firing her because he & 20th Fox never intended to have Judy on the picture, they were only using her for publicity for the picture. She was paid $50,000 for 1 weeks work.
Garland nails it!!!
Judy does a great job on this terrible song, definitely elevates it to not bad.
Wow!
THAT voice coming out of THAT mature sophisticated woman is fall down funny!
When Susan Hayward was offered the role of Helen Lawson from Mark Robson, she said on one condition that Judy Garland gets her full salary for being to let go from the production! This happened along with a hefty paycheck for Susan Hayward as she was less than enthusiastic about the role!
Wasn't judy in great voice at this time in her life fab !
Sempre. Meravigliosa
Judy's version was actually very very good!
They should have used Eileen Wilson or whoever it is on the soundtrack album. Although it is funny to think what Judy would have made of that mobile.
I agree - Eileen was great!
I wonder where this film would've gone if both Judy and Petula Clark had excepted their roles.
Who was Petula Clark supposed to play? Neely??
Petula Clark? Never heard anything about her being considered for Valley of the Dolls! Where did you get that information from?
How odd. Garland as a dubbing artist.
That's funny ; ) She did the animated "Gay Puree!" with Robert Goulet.
I actually think Judy's Singing voice sounds closer to Susan Hayward's voice than Margaret Whiting's dub for the film.
I've never understood how some singers like Patti Page, Margaret Whiting, Steve Lawrence, EVER became famous!!
I mean, Judy just hits this song right outta the ballpark!!
Not a lot of singers have this vocal ability.
And the singers of today 99%: NO TALENT!!
I've never liked Whiting. Steve L. had some good songs. Don't know PP well.
Eydie Gorme!
Blame It On He Bossa Nova!!
I want that mobile
Hayward is doing drag queen moves. it’s been alleged for years and obviously true.
Ce n'est pas Judy Garland !!!C'est la magnifique Susan Hayward très grande actrice et très belle !!!!!!
It’s Judy’s voice.
lyrics by Dory Previn
albertdiner Her husband was stolen away by Rosemary Woodhouse.
@@stuartlee6622 Very clever to mention Mia Farrow's role in "Rosemary's Baby"! I applaud you!!!
Grateful that this visual rubbish wasn't Judy's final film. After a great career this would be no way to go out.
There is a CD of "final" recordings, but it doesn't sound as good as this. She actually made something out of this song, didn't she? Sorry Margaret.
I always thought this was a strange little song. Not much of a lyric. Does anyone know who wrote this?
Dory Previn wrote the lyrics; Andre Previn wrote the music.
LoLoL~ Bravo!

What a damn shame they did not keep her in the role disgrace . They should have extended their love and appreciation !! It would have been perfect for her and the movie .
The character Neely O'hara was based on Judy.
wonderful but is this on cd
Someone should use CGI and make this the video it should have been all along.
I loved Judy, but if this is what she sounded like at the time then it's a good thing she didn't do it. She was great on her TV SHOW which was a little earlier than the film. You can tell by interviews she did about doing the film that she had lost alot of weight and it seemed like she was on her way down. It's a shame, because she was the best there was on stage at one time.
please where can i find a recording of this?
01:07 LOL 🤣
It was a mistake to have thought about her being in the film cause her forte was not playing bitches. It did not fit her, plus she was taking too many drugs and look too sickly ot play the part, Susan Hayward did justice to the role. She knew how to play the bitch.A she was good at it.
Pure camp
Ms. Streisand. I'm so glad I'm the homosexual and you're the "Star" This should be lots of fun, don't you think?! Don xoxo
No less believable than Margaret Whiting's voice coming out of her.
I am so glad Judy did not play the part. The character Helen Lawson was a louse!
Poor Susan got stuck with it.
to all you people who says that Garland should have been Lawson
the character of Helen is clearly not sympathetic where is Judy play mostly sympathetic Rose so it would have never worked I think putting Helen Hayes in this Betty Davis are Joan Crawford it would have been a great and interesting group I think that Judy would have been horrible in this and well Judy may have been known as someone who gets sympathy because of her life stage mom finances and drugs Helen was truly a barracuda sorry little Julian also known as Dorothy would have down the road that kind of Justice that Lawson brought to it

In the book "Valley Of The Dolls" it was obviously Ethel Merman who was the character "Helen Lawson"... It makes sense...
And Neely was Judy Garland. I am glad Judy didn't do the movie. It would have been painful and uncomfortable for Judy and the other actors.
Hillary Clinton would have been perfect as the Conniving Helen!!
this movie is like the mid sixties on amphetemines
USING MARGARET WHITING'S VOICE WAS EVEN WORSE THEN LETTING SUSAN HAYWARD DO HER OWN SINGING...WE SAW HER OWN SINGING IN I'LL CRY TOMORROW"...BAD NEWS THERE..AND I AM A BIG FAN OF SUSAN HAYWARD....
I thought she was a terrific singer in ICT. I don't understand your comment.
This was Judy’s role to loose, and she lost it! I think Susan Hayward did a good job! Had good chemistry with Patty Duke! Just like Joan Crawford getting fired from Hush,Hush Sweet Charlotte, Olivia de Havilland was the better choice!
judy really dodged a bullet on this one
Yes. I've read she hated the dialogue, "I can't say these words!" she allegedly said. Besides the way she was treated, I really think she didn't want to make this trashy movie. It was beneath her.
@@hudsony777 I agree, It really threw me for a loop when Susan Hayward was uttering all that swearing in her first scene. Never thought I would hear that kind of language outside of an X Rated film!
@@usmale49Yes, and I really like Susan's movies. Normally.
@@hudsony777 I'm with you on that! But Susan Hayward really did some very good movies...I especially like: "I'[ll Cry Tomorrow" and that argument/fight between her and Jo Van Fleet!! Very powerful, indeed!!
@@usmale49I really have to make a point of seeing that as there's a wonderful musical clip from it here on YT, but that's one of her most famous films and I've yet to see it.
Can a movie be a parody of itself?
Weird lyrics. Orchestra of 4 ? Where are the other musicians? No microphone? Flat audience reaction shots. Totally unrealistic sequence.
eurouc In the late sixties (when this film was made) nobody was miked on Broadway. Other than that defense, I find this film unwatchable today. As a teen at the time I couldn’t get enough of it. You live you grow.
Who tf wrote that song? 😩
Andre and Dory Previn
