Dionne Warwick was the best person to record this song that was written by Burt Bacharach, who just passed away. Two musical greats!

Burt and Hal were the best song writing duo ever in my opinion. That they discovered Dionne and wrote songs just for her is for us a miracle. The trio have the best songs ever in popular music. I listen to their songs constantly. However, some people here have posted that Burt wrote this song. I bet he wished he did. The song was written by Andre and Dory Previn and was released in 1968 after she re-recorded it. Warwick re-recorded a Pat Williams-arranged and Burt Bacharach-produced version of the theme at A&R Studios in New York because contractual restrictions from her home label, Scepter Records, would not allow her version from the film to be included in the 20th Century-Fox soundtrack album. In April 1968, the RIAA-certified Gold Scepter LP that contained the hit version of the song, Dionne Warwick in Valley of the Dolls, peaked at no. 6 on the Billboard album chart, and would remain on the chart for more than a year. A beautiful song sung by a beautiful voice. Dionne is the best.

To me this is one of the best songs ever produced. The perfect arrangement - did you catch the French horns at the end? The perfect arrangement showcasing the vocal range, interpretative skill, and heart of American master vocal musician Dionne Warwick. This song is as fresh as the day it was recorded and released.

In order to see the hurt, pain, hopelessness, depression-look beyond the term "cheesy movie." Even as a child when I "sneaked to watch" this movie-I did understand THIS-that these women were so unhappy and actually believed the "right pill" would put them out of their misery-if only for a little while. This movie-and the haunting song by Warwick and Bacharach was absolutely heart-wrenching. IT WAS NOT CHEESY. IT WAS HONEST, TRUTHFUL and I had hoped to see a glimmer of somebody-ANYBODY would make it out with their life INTACT - yet tattered. In this movie-Not everyone made it out of the "prison" called addiction. However, there is HOPE. His Name is Jesus, The Christ. Thank you for posting this song. THINK through these lyrics. SAME PROBLEM-DIFFERENT DRUGS. Lord help us.

What a song; what a vocal performance! For the record, it was written By Andre and Dory Previn, although it has all the hallmarks of a Bacharach-David collaboration, as were the other songs for the film, except the instrumental cues by John(ny) Williams such as "Jennifer's French Movie."
