Thanks for the video. Was thinking about giving this method a whirl on my board on board fence. Used my Graco years ago and went thru tons of stain. Ready Seal is awesome stuff, so easy to work with.
I had the same pump sprayer with the correct stain nozzle and tried to use it with Valspar semitransparent water based stain/sealant mix but it failed to spray at all and just came out like a stream. Dont know if my nozzle was improperly made or some form of user error but it was very frustrating and had to use a roller instead to finish the job which took much longer.
I did that too, it's almost like paint and I think I jacked up the sprayer. Lol The gate looks good though, but it got on the cement and coated it. Lol
I used 3 gallons for 40 ft of 6 ft high fencing. However you can easily do it with 2 if efficient with the application. It’s not cheap stain! And I think it says wait 24-48 hours.
Great video. Do you have a dedicated pump sprayer for staining? How well did it clean up the tank? Reason I ask is I’m using a rather expensive battery powered sprayer and don’t want to ruin it? Thanks
Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t think I listed a pump sprayer for the fence, but rather the Shed Makeover (different video where I used bleach). The one I’m using for staining is the HDX from Home Depot, the upgraded version that can handle stain. It’s likely the other one cannot handle it unless it’s diluted. Again my apologies.
Good question. Pretty much the same way but I brushed the posts and maneuvered the sprayer into any gaps. Just keep in mind it sprays everywhere so cover anything nearby.
@@TheDIYrealtordid you spray the 'rails' sideways and then paint the pickets up and down? Or just sprayed everything up and down aside from the hand painted post/tricky areas? Also do you reccommend doing the front or back first? Thanks!!
No back brushing required if applied correctly. I didn’t in the beginning so yes, that would have been appropriate. You can see a brush in my back pocket. I brushed the posts on the other side but again if done correctly it will dry correctly
Yeah the back brushing is not a viable idea mostly because the stain in already soaked in and if you were gonna brush it why even f*** around with a sprayer? PS.i Googled using a pump sprayer to stain and it brought me your video?@@TheDIYrealtor
I see that you got some stain on ur white shed. Whats the best way to clean that up without getting ur fence wet? I freaking over sprayed and got it on the side of my house.
There are two versions of the Home Depot brand HDX, it’s the one that’s slightly more expensive but can do stains as well. Just be warned it goes everywhere when spraying! Lol
@@RUclipsVideoViewerDEL I guess I should have been more specific. A career painter that did it for 30 years, million dollar houses, wood furniture and fences. It was just a suggestion from some with probably more experience than most of us.
@gregcolin9488 yeah, sorry, I was in a snarky mood yesterday. It's always better to back brush a penatrating coating into the grain the first time. But, it's also good to read directions and follow them... Have a good day!
Everyone wishes they would have taken the time to take a pliers and pull out all those little plastic tags on the ends of every board before nailing them up, now you can ocd over them till the end of time as they reveal themselves one by miserable one.😢
Correct. However one was a complete waste of time and stain because I was over spraying. Therefore, while the result is the same, multiple passes using extra stain only yielded a waste of about a gallon of stain. And at $44/gal it gets expensive quickly!

I have never thought about putting stain in a pump sprayer,i think it is a brilliant idea.
Thanks man
Hopefully it can speed up your project 👍🏻
Pump spray with a foam pad as a back brush "rub". It really spreads it quickly
Thanks for sharing your experiences, very helpful knowing what went wrong and what went right.
Thank you. A classic case of “less is more”
Stain and spray method looks great
Thanks for the video. Was thinking about giving this method a whirl on my board on board fence. Used my Graco years ago and went thru tons of stain. Ready Seal is awesome stuff, so easy to work with.
It is, and some of those paint sprayers waste so much paint/stain. Give it a shot!
@@TheDIYrealtor put a gallon on the fence today with the pump sprayer. Works really well.
Thanks for posting the video. I have the same sprayer. Do you remember what tip you used? Thanks again.
It’s the flat nozzle!
Thank you. This video really helped me. I think I did a good job on the first try and you really helped.
That’s so great to hear! I’m sure it looks awesome
About to go home and do this. Really glad I found this video. Thanks for the tips!!
Love it!! Good luck. Best advice: Practice on something first to get a feel for it, and COVER EVERYTHING because there is tons of overspray :)

That's the issue I am having. Did you figure it out?
Same issue we're having. When we put only water in the tank we got a perfect 'fan' . It's almost like the stain is too thick for the pump sprayer.
I did that too, it's almost like paint and I think I jacked up the sprayer. Lol The gate looks good though, but it got on the cement and coated it. Lol
Water-based stain has much larger particles than an oil-based stain like ready seal and cannot be sprayed with a pump sprayer
How dry do the fence pickets need to be before applying the oil based stain?
also how much stain did you use for how many feet?
I used 3 gallons for 40 ft of 6 ft high fencing. However you can easily do it with 2 if efficient with the application. It’s not cheap stain!
And I think it says wait 24-48 hours.
Your video was a big help. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Great video. Do you have a dedicated pump sprayer for staining? How well did it clean up the tank? Reason I ask is I’m using a rather expensive battery powered sprayer and don’t want to ruin it? Thanks
Sorry for the delay but no I just wash it out immediately, and since it’s a water based stain it doesn’t have a problem. Hope that helps!
What pump sprayer are you using. The one you listed is not the one you are using.

Did you dilute with mineral spirits or just use stain as is. Thanks
Stain as is, it says no diluting necessary
What kind of nozzle do you use? Mine didnt comes out like that 😂
Ha! It’s the flat nozzle. Came with the sprayer
Which pump sprayer did you use? Thanks.
Home Depot makes 2 types from their HDX line. I used the slightly more upgraded one that allows staining.
Thanks so much! I tried a Decks and More sprayer and had no luck. Well give this one a try.
Great advice! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
How do you do the other side of the fence. The side with the rails. Seems like all the videos do the 'easy' side.
Good question. Pretty much the same way but I brushed the posts and maneuvered the sprayer into any gaps. Just keep in mind it sprays everywhere so cover anything nearby.

What color and brand dud you use on fence here
It’s called Natural Cedar by Ready Seal: amzn.to/455MFM2
Your suppose to brush it after you spray the boards

I did two coats about 24 hours apart
Great job on the video
In a social media world full of criticism and insults, it’s really appreciated to hear the kind words. Thank you!
I wanna do this but I’m scared some may blow over onto my neighbor’s patio.
It definitely sprays everywhere!
@@TheDIYrealtordo you think it would help to hang like a shower curtain behind and move as you spray or would that make a bigger mess? Thanks

Yes the overspray is a bit much. Try a little mineral spirits or try pressure washing it or just roll a little paint over it…
@@TheDIYrealtor thank you. I will try that. Thanks for replying.
Possibly the hackiest answer I've ever read.@@TheDIYrealtor
Was this water based or oil based?
Water, with “no back brushing required”. Except for the back, which required plenty of brushing for the posts and railss
@@TheDIYrealtor I’m going to use oil. Can I spray oil based? I was planing to roll it. Spray would be much quicker.
It is not only stain, you also need to seal your fence for UV protection and mold resistance
Right
W hat sprayer you use

I was told by a painter. First pass, do small sections then back brush or back roll the fence.
Certainly wouldn’t hurt but the can specifically says no back brushing required!
Who cares what the can says...they were told by a painter! 😅 @TheDIYrealtor
