you are such a humble man. I wish youtube was around when i started. One thing you forgot to mention, never stop learning. Dont get stuck in the past technologies of HVAC systems. Keep reading on whats new, and also go to conventions of the trade not only to build friendships but to see physically what you are about to see in the future /

I fully agree, Im 28 I started my HVAC career when I was 22 and now run my own business. I didnt think of it as much at first and just wanted to do it for the money for the future but as years went by I grew a passion for it. Of course I kept my main motivation towards the money but theres nothing wrong with that as long as you love what you do as well. Nothing feels better than loving what you do, supporting your family and buying yourself and your girl nice things and food haha

Your exactly right, been in the BUISNESS since 1974,I'm 70 years old, stick to code, let the guys that cut corners have the job, more times than not you'll go back and repair what the wana be didn't do. I don't advertise I don't have to , my customers generate my base, stay up on technology, give a fair price(not cheap) fair.dont sell something the customer don't need, this works ,70 and going to retire soon. Ps don't carry the job home ,when your done for the day your done.

Although I do love the idea of the younger generation starting their own gig just a few years into the trade because we desperately need the younger folks to keep this trade alive and well, the 30 year HVAC veteran in me also knows how many years it takes to be a full well rounded and experienced tech. I couldnt imagine starting my business after three or four years in the field, I didnt know jack crap compared to when I actually started my own years and years later. It takes tens and tens of thousands of service calls on all kinds of different equipment and applications to really get to know this trade. There are no legitimate short cuts to get around that fact.

Would you recommend starting slow and trying to build a customer base first before leaving our current employer are setting out on our own. Or do you think just going for it is the best option. Jesus Christ said this:
”“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matt‬ ‭6‬:‭19‬-‭21‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?“ Mark‬ ‭8‬:‭34‬-‭37‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
Put God first. A lot of people make money their god. You won’t take anything physical with you when you pass on to the afterlife.

Honestly I am an Apprentice at the moment working residential. I'm very mechanically inclined and a visual learner. Been a self employed contractor doing property management for 10yrs in the past and now hvac. This is from my experience and for many out there. Just because you see $$$ does not mean you will live a QUALITY life. From my experience, know your worth. Honesty is the best policy even if you dont get the job, they will soon be calling you back. Its has to be a passion, whats not better a passion that comes with money. If you know in your heart you are doing right by the customer, its again your self worth and your making your bed so you lay in it. Your selling yourself not just what you are capable of doing. Also its quality in life, I can live, I know I can live just as comfortable with 75K a year than someone 300k a year. Its not just how you treat others but how you treat yourself and your motives in life. And if it takes you 7 to 10 yrs to start this on a residential residential level ,its not for you. I would say if you take the time to structure yourself to study, you should have it packed down in two yrs tops on a residential level. I was shocked to see how not so complicated of doing a new install was. Two steps above a hot water heater it is. You can do it, remain teachable.

omg you're telling new business owners to go golfing... you haven't been in business long enough to know what you're doing... if you have any free time.. you should never have any free time if you're a new business owner.. first off paperwork, inventory, searching for new suppliers not only of parts but of things like insurance and other business needs.. and that doesn't even consider finding new business which you should always be doing. I said to myself I am going to click this video and see if I still want to be subscribed to you.. my advice to you rethink everything .. I have 25 years in three different fields with 2 business licenses.. you never have time to golf or take time off.. when you get to be 50-60 and your retirement is completely planned and all of your finances have been taken care of .. your kids are through college.. your house is paid off.. everything you have has long been paid off and you don't have to work but you do anyway.. then you get to take a day for yourself.. i bet right now you are in debt.. I have never been in long term debt.. and I am no one special.. I just worked my ass off 18hrs a day 7 days a week... yeah you need to have a personal life.. but you need to have money to have a personal life.. how are you going to survive 20-30 years after you retire.. and at what age are you going to retire... you think owning your own business means you are not accountable to anyone? about 50% of businesses fail in the first year.. of the ones that survive within the next 3 years 50% more fail... drinking with your buddies at the golf course isn't going to get it done... and here is the incentive that you already should have but you seem to have never thought of this.............. is it better to play a round of golf and drink with your buddies a few days a week or a few days a month or year... or is it better to make some money which you can save for retirement which you can use to feed yourself and keep a roof over your head.. and whoever else decides to spend their life with you... because once you retire there isn't any looking back... dude you know the tech but you don't know anything about the rest.. i wish you good luck.. theres no reason you shouldn't make it if you keep your head in the game.

True, only if you actually live to 50 or 60. No guarantee for that. Funny how everyone just assumes they gonna live to retirement age. Yes plan for it some but no go overboard. Also if HVAC is just a job to you that pays the bills then don't start your own business. I have been a service tech for 16 years. Pretty good career but I don't have enough passion for it to start a business. That would have to be something in motor sports, then I would enjoy every minute of it and if I don't make it to 50 or 60 is still enjoyed every minute of it. Already work long hours, would be miserable spending more time on HVAC running my own business, getting home and working on quotes and paperwork, accounting and all that till 1 in the morning. Not for me. Motorsports now, different story and will figure something out
