The game that launched the Castlevania series was released for NES in May 1987. Join Simon Belmont on an 18 stage quest to take down the famous vampire Dracula, and a few other famous monsters on the way. The game introduced the standard knife, axe, holy water, stopwatch, and boomerang special weapons used in many future games. Source: speeddemosarchi...
For those who stumble across these videos, a speed run is a video of a person or persons, completing a game as fast as possible using any means possible. This can include glitches, abusing in-game mechanics and skipping items or even playing events out of sequence.

i appreciate this guys speed run. hes informative and shares stuff thats somewhat interesting and good tips and explanation.
agreed, I like how he talks through strategies for every stretch
Boris Baxter I wish I could of heard him more but the other guy wouldn't shut up about top final fantasy jokes that make no sense.
Kevinb1821 jeez man, you getting paid by the comment every time you mention the final fantasy jokes?
4:25 - The most casual couch sit-down ever.
+Monocle Enthusiast the left hand guy?
Yes, the one that sat down on the couch at 4:25.
+Monocle Enthusiast theyre both chillin like villians lmao
+Monocle Enthusiast i made a castlevania vs wu tang mashup trilogy vol 1 and 2 are out im workin on part 3 for its haloween release date look em up
OK that is the right hand guy...
"In game second is a little longer than a second in real life." No this is a gamer, no frills, no emotion, just raw power.
Is it me or does the guy reading the donations sound like Dracula?
He is not romanian, he is not Dracula. CHECK-MATE.
Spooky BASS Dracula was from Walacchia, my friend...
Gabriele Riva I am from Walacchia region, my city now is called Buzău. So what?
Matthew Pape he sounds like he needs to shut the duck up with all the dumb final fantasy jokes
Matthew Pape and who are you orson wells? Don't put others down
This guy is great. He obviously works hard and is enthusiastic about what he does.
Haters aren't passionate about anything.
And all that hard work actually helps people in need.
Having fun while helping = best combo.
Not the fastest speed run I’ve seen for this game but he doesn’t use some of the glitches like running through the stalactites in the Frankenstein stage. I prefer it when the game is played the way it was intended
TRUE
@@jmathieson15 then why are you watching this? Go watch the 100% or low % runs if that's your thing.
Your comment is shit.
@@ChromeCobra420 awww sorry if you didn’t like it muffin
I fucking love these "off prime-time" runs at AGDQ
It's after all the casuals have gone to bed and the only people in the room are fellow speedrunners who understand the joys and pains of the art.
You mean pros? =p
7:37 Simon Belmont is so calm even when falling 100+ feet. XD Love that.
I tried some of those damage boost and tricks on my Wii U VC version, and man, it makes a lot of difference! You guys aren't just beating games fast, your passing on knowledge to viewers and gamers! Thank you SDA!
He messed up a few times and still beat the game in 13 minutes... As someone who beat this hard game as a kid, hats off to you sir.
the last clap from the dude in the yellow is priceless!
Lindsay Carroll Someone's got to be the good sport c:
"I am going to lose some time on Medusa", proceeds to beat the hell out of Medusa faster than I would think possible. Great run.
I don't speed run games. I just stumbled upon speed running the last few days and let me say this is a great community and it's great to see all the support it gives to charity!
It's amazing to watch speedruns of this game. I remember with pride as a kid that first time I finished it. No way am I finishing in 14 minutes lol
This game can still kick your ass with R and G over 30 years later. The NES had some great games!
@@scotthartley518 RNG, not R and G.
I like the style of this dude, he is informative and serious, pretty cool.
Unpopular opinion...AGDQ from this time period is more fun to watch than the massive crowds of nowadays. The atmosphere is perfect.
Funcdoc has got this "childhood's best friend's badass player-brother" vibe over him. You know, when you went over to a friend and that friend had a brother that was there and he was like "I got some time to kill, let me show you guys how to beat this game like you'll never forget it"
His controls are tighter than his shirt.
claxan looks uncomfortable
Lol at Dracula reading the donations!
apartment906 Dracula is supposed to hang out with his bad bitches at his lair. What happened?
Dracula's souls invaded the guy only to get his tribute xD
this game made me cry like a bitch when I was young, and it still made me piss even now and you played it like a walk in a park.
I broke 2 controllers while I played this game during my childhood days. I know you're pain Dakebs Catalig!
Benjamin Gehring i too broke a controller while playing castlevania but it was castlevania 2 simon's quest. that game is a bitch
Anyone 2020 😂😂
That’s my friend I grew up with! We played games all the time. He is a wizard
So humbled after watching this guy own one of the hardest games from my youth.
Hats off to this guy; a guy who dedicates himself to what he likes doing, and strives to learn more...sounds like a winner to me!
Damn, this dude must’ve went to Castlevania college and shit
That dude in the yellow button up has been in the audience for every speed run for every event for the last 3+ years. I'm convinced he's a ghost.
So it's safe to say he has... no life.
Judgy, heh?
He's watching as much as us.
2:40 nice trick. When I was a child I wasnt able to end the game, this guy is awesome!
4:12 OMY HE DID IT AGAIN!
7:10 WHAT THE....
9:58 Yeah that hurts. Now I remeber that old times...
11:28 is there any way to avoid being hit there? that was a death spot for me
14:42 my heart...
Really like this guys style. Very calm and confident and definitely knows what he's talking about and isn't afraid to share it while he's playing. Very interesting. Also, I highly respect anyone that can play a game like this so much that they're this knowledgeable about it.
He not only explains stuff that make his speedrun amazing but also the look in his eyes when something goes wrong is priceless. That was the beauty of those games, frustration at its peak and the final battle was epic. It's sudden death at its best with the final boss and you can tell by watching his eyes when he lands the last blow after seeing how Dracula was jumping towards him and if the game glitched or slowed down he would lose (only a real NES gamer understands that)
That was awesome! The guy playing the game is a badass!
This game has eluded me for many years, been thinking bout finally dedicating the time while in quarantine
This blew my mind! O_O I remember always getting stuck on the Reaper as a child. Only beat this game twice in my life, the Reaper was always a problem... He just blew through the entire game in under 13 minutes... I mean... Wow! Bravo!
I'm on an old GDQ kick atm. GDQ used to be so much better than it is now. Not even close. And it wasn't COVID that killed it.
Player and audience are kind of hypnotized at 6:45
i just played this today and goddamn it, that's what the II and III items were for? i beat the WHOLE FUCKING GAME without using items!?
What a relaxing and nice Castlevania run to watch, also very informative about the strategies, props 👏
Great run with good commentary, can't expect less from funkdoc !
I like this guy.
The guy is simply explaining his run unlike a lot of other speed runners. I like him better than most because of it.
Wow. I'm typically not a big fan of speed runs, but I have to give credit to Funkdoc for an AMAZING run! I am speechless at his skill! It makes me want to play Castlevania when I get home and try some of his tricks. Again, well done, good sir! You ROCK!
Always a pleasure to see Funkdoc play or comment.
is it me or is the speedrunner ultra formal when he speaks
Literally cannot wait for AGDQ 2014 btw anyone who wants to tune in it starts on the 5th of January and ends on the 11th of January :)
7:10 is it some kind of glitch that causes them to take multiple hits per cross there? That's just crazy!
He explained it at 7:42.
that's not a glitch. it's an exploit from the programming
I enjoyed his commentary, a lot better than your typical speedrunner.😀
you're the man funkdoc! flawless game! awesome!
The castlevania set was my favorite of ASGDQ 2013. Especially Funkdoc's Captain Falcon like "YESSS!", with the whole fist pump.
also this guy has alot of skill. THIS GAME IS SO HARD. i first played it on the gameboy advance nes classics version which had a save feature. if you made it to a stage, you could start from there. (if you died at stage 3-2, you start at 3-1)
And it was so hard!!! like clocktower was hard so many enemies crossing the screen and getting whacked. i did make it to dracula, but then my brother beat it and the game save started over or something so i never did it myself...
but i have an nes now and castlevania, maybe ill beat it one day....
The thing that happens when the game starts over is called Second Quest
nobody has done castlevania as decent on gdq as srkfundoc. dude's on another level.
All I could hear in the back of my mind the entire time was Ogre screaming "NERDS!!!"
And you who watched it on RUclips is what?
@@Thelemorf indeed😂
It's so interesting to see the "production" quality of this AGDQ from less than 5 years ago in comparison to more recent ones.
Ii wana see this with the power glove
This dude is godlike. Great run and commentary.
@ 10:29 PJ: they're silly - Blueglass: (wakes up from 200th consecutive game attended, looks over at PJ who has been there entire time) Oh, PJ - PJ: hello
shouts out to the guy with one hand clapping, he just proved that anything is possible
I love listening to funkdoc's commentary
very good master of the masters funkdoc forever I want to say
Simon Belmont was announced in smash just a few hours ago
i love this video thanks
Mckaley Colkin grew up to be a NES speed-runner :)
Precisely! He looks exactly like the kid from Pagemaster all grown up. Guess the experience of being sucked into the Literary world traumatised him off from books and made him go to video games.
If you watched this in early 2020 or in 2019 "Wow, that room is really empty for a GDQ" Watching in in early 2021, "Wow, that room is packed and I can see their air and food holes!"
Just replayed this game today and it took me 3 hours to beat it with save states. Amazing job at conquering this game. (and yes I realize this AGDQ is from 2013)
it must have been late at night or early in the morning cause their is barely anybody there.
Good stuff man. Beating this game is one of my all time gaming achievements lol
Nice, mine was beating Mike Tyson
OMG the last boss in this game is so hard, even a world-champion class player can still have a little trouble with it.
aaaaaaaaooooooo
Dracula is simple. Phase 1 is a case of timing. Phase 2 is Holy Water stun, jump whip (x3) and repeat.
This is my favorite speedrun ever! This helped me get past Death.
I tip my hat to this guy. I've learnt new interesting facts about CV.
I didn't realise at the time how few people were in the room during this run! Chat was going nuts, from memory, and rightly so - Funkdoc's runs were the highlights of the marathon! Sadly the Australian time difference meant I was barely able to catch any of the 8/16-bit platformers live... =(
Amazing this guy is a true pro, my congratulations for him :)
When he beat the run, my heart melted.
I totally agree with DeadlyCrayonz. The reason why I love watching these speed runs is partly due to the neat explanations of the runners.
The joy in their eyes is gold.
Best Years of AGDQ
I wonder if Funkdoc is ever going to make an attempt to reclaim his record.
I was playing Castlevania last night and I did some of the things this guy was doing. Best the first one, skipped the second one, beat the third one
you are my favorite speedrunner funkdoc nice run.. i am currently trying to speedrun this game with no damage at dracula
He's one of the few people who tries to watch everyone's runs. In any run you watch, Blueglass is probably somewhere in that crowd more than other people. I think it's the same for theenglishman as well.
Blueglass is the shit
Did anyone else notice the classic dog bone controller , i fucking love that thing , i think its called the nes max
This randomly popped up in my recommended list, but I'm glad I watched it. It gives me hope that there are speed runs and runners who do things by the book. In other words, the main reason speed runs are a huge turn off to me is the use of bugs and glitches, which I consider cheating. I'm probably in the minority on this, but that is how I feel about it. Speed runs that only utilize the game mechanics, like getting hit to advance, are completely acceptable in my book. This was probably one of the few extraordinary speed runs and with one of the most memorable games on the NES. Great job all around and nice commentary as well. Hopefully more people will do speed runs only using the game mechanics or at least make it a separate category so we can see who really is the fastest without cheating.
My best speed run time was twenty five years.
let's face it. funkdoc is a total badass
A bunch of passionate gamers... I love to be there to learn a couple tricks from them :D
There are soooo many new tricks to this game.
I wish the double shot attack is perfected on Dracula so it can save Funkdoc some time.
He's a cloned (so multiple Blueglasses can be in almost very run) super human sent back from the future to warn us about our demise but was distracted by speed runs thus causing the future world to end and than a confusing time paradox. Seems perfectly reasonable.
Very impressive and way to totally wreck the Grim Reaper. He gave us nightmares back in the 80s. I first figured out the holy water trick after seeing a picture in Nintendo Power of all places where someone was using it on him. Prior to that we used axes or crosses and hoped for the best. Once I tried it out I never went back to anything else. Well unless I was trying a no sub weapon challenge with only the whip. Dracula is doable with some practice but the Grim Reaper is nearly impossible (not recommended).
This guy playing very awesome 👍.
AGDQ, when fun was allowed and when it was comfy.
Why was no nobody in the room while he was streaming, I would've wanted to watch if I had the chance.
This game is SO MUCH BETTER than Half-Life!!!!
Odd comparison
Apples and oranges.
Very odd comparison
the runner is so funky he make this game look easy
Today I found a small glitch at the end of stage 10 (at 8:11 in the video), I was standing right of the stairs and while jumping a bat killed me and knocked me to the left. I dropped onto the stairs which automatically sends you to stage 11, but probably because I was already dead the screen glitched out for a second and there was a zombie which isn't even in this stage. Then the stage restarted as usual. This was on an emulator though so not sure if it happens on a real NES as well.
Is this the cast to the update movie for revenge of the nerds.,???
once i saw his nick, i knew exactly what he was gonna look like. all hail funkdoc!
11:56 I really had some bad times with this boss. You made it look so easy. But I do remember I either had the axe or the cross.
Holy water is very overpowered here.
Wow ninja PJ sneaking in there. I didn't even notice until like 9 minutes into the run xD
DO you need audio techs for this years marathon?
Holy moly, the nerdism is immaculate in this one.
Damn, I still can't get pass the corridor. Nice one, Funky.
I have been plaingy Castlevania on NES since it's release but not a favorite of mine what so ever so don't know much about it. What do the roman numeral blocks you secretly find do?
the guy playing, has the emotions of a game manual !
If you can beat it so quickly, do the second playthrough run of the game, beat it and continue playing again. I'd watch that. Whats 16+ minutes more? How many times can you beat it without turning your console off? If you can do it twice, I'll take my hat off to you.
