  • In this video I work on my European Hornbeam, this was one of the first trees I worked on when I started my channel. Although the work I did was correct I put it in a too small of a pot which has restricted its development over the last 2 years.
I correct that today by putting it in a nice big pot and giving it a nice root prune.
if you are interested in the first video I did the full play list is here for you.
It was only my second video on RUclips I think, so please be kind with the comments. :)

That’s a good amount of fine roots on here. The pond basket sure did its job. It’ll have a lot more room now in the new pot. Also a nice selection of branch prunes. It’s looking great!

Thanks Dave. I just wish I had put it in a larger pond basket to begin with, the tree would have been much thicker now. But overall the tree is set up ready to become a good bonsai for the future.

You have set the Hornbeam up very well for some strong growth and trunk fattening. I really like the branch structure. Still have to get myself a few hornbeams to work on. Great video thank you :-)

Those Roots are looking good. I think it’s really going to do well in that new pot. How long do you plan on leaving it in? Thanks, keep growing

Thanks Matt. I did say 2-3 years but I definitely think 3 years, possibly even 4 is going to be the best idea to get the tree to grow bigger and start to develop.

@@bonsaiexpression I was thinking a root prune in 2 then another 2/3 in that big boy. Good luck 👍🏻

If you really want the full advantage of the bigger pot give the tree atleast 3 years.

I totally agree with you. I'm going to let the tree just grow now and just do some minor trimming. Well that's the plan for now.

These are the very good roots, why are you claiming the pot was not good. It was very good.
I think there is some genetic problem with tree or it just not recovered yet prom you previous pruning and planting

The problem was the pot was far too small to develop the tree. It needs to be in a bigger pot that's why there is only a small amount of roots. I'd expect more roots to have grown in two years in a bigger pot. Basically I stunted the trees growth.
