Thank you so much for this video. I couldn’t get my edger started. New spark plug, clean air filter, fresh gas.
Darn near pulled my shoulder out. Tried your handy tip, and it started up with two pulls.
Saved me a trip to get it fixed!
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
Thank you for this tip. I had drained the old gas out, cleaned the carb, nothing. Then after watching this video, I went back outside and tried this method. Edger started right up!
Glad it worked for you Raymond Joyner for the comment I appreciate it
Thank you I’m going to try that on my edger i was about to throw in the towel with my edger and a power washer.
I thought i was the only one with the starting problem. Thank you again. Kris Hinds.
no problem and good luck
It worked! Took me doing this 3 or 4 times however. Thanks man!
Perfect . Thank thank you for the comment I appreciate it
wow just used the thumb method on 2 Tecumseh mini bike engines giving me start problems . they fired right up !!! thanks
Thank you Richard steblenko for the comment I appreciate it.
Great video worked for me. I have the exact same edger. And fyi regarding the belt. It was stated the replacement belt is 4L320. When I received mine I installed and didn't sound right. I received a 4L320 but it was a 1/2in width which wasn't the correct width or length.. After searching around it was discovered for my edger the belt was MTD 754-0142 V-Belt 3/8 X 31. Guess maybe some edgers came with different pulley wheels.
I believe you are absolutely correct
Thanks! That's an amazing trick! I'm learning more and more from your channel. Great video (as usual)
Christopher Valdes thank you for the comment. I greatly appreciate it.
I’ve got the same edger starts on first pull. Great edger
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
I use a similar sort of trick to clear out the carburettor on my dads Honda lawnmower engine whenever it idles rough except that I spray fuel into the carburettor then I close the throttle to clear out the idle speed jet.
That usually saves me pulling the whole carburettor down !
Nice trick
Thanks fixed mine.
Glad I could help
Brilliant thanks bud it started first time
Glad it helped
awesome! got'er started! Thank you
Great job!
great vid! I've used this trick many times on equipment that hasn't been ran in years.
Alan Marshall thank you for commenting. I sometimes forget about the these techniques and go right in for the carb myself.
Thank you, I’ll try it
no problem
Excelente video
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
That sure worked with a 5-horse Briggs I had on a wood splitter. If the choke plate had no hole it would've been fine but I had to close off the intake completely to get it to start, even after rebuilding the carb a couple of times. The hole in the choke plate was not one of Briggs better ideas. Thanks and Blessings!
I guess they wanted to make sure, some air got to the engine, but maybe they make it too large?
@@HomeGaragechannel I was thinking how to close it up and not have that part ve suicked into the motor but just got rid of the splitter and let someone else mess with it.
Thank you!
You're welcome
I have a Mclane edger like that with the same 3.5 hp briggs and Stratton engine. I put fresh gas in it after cleaning out the old gas and it started up but it runs a bit rough. I removed the muffler and looked at the diaphragm and it seems to be ok. Trying to avoid removing the entire carburetor.
I’m having trouble getting my edger to run at full throttle, it surges after I replaced the diaphragm and thoroughly cleaned the carburetor. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Trying to fix to sell to a friend.
Thank you very much I got same exact mach how can I fix the pull start
What exactly is wrong with it? Is all the rope out and it won't retract?
@@HomeGaragechannel when I tray pull it up to start it alway is stuk
@@alikady1 you mean the rope won't come out? Have you checked to make sure the engine spins freely?
Do you have Facebook?

?
I have this same unit having trouble finding images of the carb linkage and springs
I understand your frustration as I can't find them either. If I get a chance I'll take a pic of the linkages for you.
Starter fluid .But if that alcohol based fuel has been in there for while ;it wouldn't run good. Empty the tank.
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
Nice trick. But what is actually happening by doing that? Does it create a better suction through the bowl?
That's pretty much what it's doing. Its helping to clear any minor clogs in the carb. After that the gas will clear the rest of it away. If there's a diaphragm problem tho it won't help.
Are you fully plugging the hole to create some vacuum or you simply restricting the air even more beyond the choke?
Yes I'm plugging the hole to pull a vacuum so that the engine will clear any blockages
What’s the part number for the belt ?
sorry I don't have the part number handy. Try using ereplacementparts dot com and put in the model number.
It would have been nice to know what this "trick" actually does inside the carb.
it clears the blockage
@@HomeGaragechannel what blockage? What is blocking and how does that clear it?
Thanks, after a carburetor replacement my edger starts but dies when the drive belt is tensioned. Is that possibly due to poor compression? The edger relatively new and has been used very little.
When you activate the blade are you above the dirt or almost hitting it? The other option is that it might not have enough gas and starves when the blade activates.
Whats the model number for the edger I have the exact same edger but its missing the model number and im missing the books for it?
it's funny you say that because I don't have the label either that tells me the model or the serial number.
@@HomeGaragechannel Yeah I'm missing that exact same one as you I see where its supposed to go but its not there.
@@ZTH184 I have two of these and the same thing on that one two, someone at the factory wasn't doing their job that day.
I think it came in the owners manual but don't know where it is someone put it together for me but lost the manual and didn't apply the sticker. I don't know why they just didn't apply it at the factory though .
Why did putting a finger over the choke fix it? Thank you
it forces a lot fuel, into the engine, to help get it started, and it then, basically clears the clog, on its own.
Need blade and screw to replace blade on my edger , where can I order blade and screw .
Try ereplacementparts dot com
The recoil stater is locked in place . I cannot pull it .
Check my other response
The wire connecting to the spark plug was cut. What is the name of that part to replace it. I will appreciate your help.
its the ignition module
Home Garage yes
Yes
@@marcelomontes2092 its one piece the wire and the coil.
Can you do this trick on other style carburetors? Like the ones on a Honda mower with the small bowl?
sure can, but if it doesn't work after the first few attempts , you'll have to go into the carb.
If you still have that edger in this video do u have model number for it
no I don't
I have the same unit. I'm looking to replace the blade drive belt. Without a legible model number for the edger I can't find the proper size belt. Can you help?
sure but you'll have to wait till tomorrow when it's light. I'll get you the belt length.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you, much appreciated.
@@m0mm0m its a 4L320 belt which is 32" outside length.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thank you, I will now be able to get my edger back online again. I appreciate your time and effort on this!
@@m0mm0m no problem
What’s the oil type, I need to change it and I can’t find the manual.
Thank you That One Gamer for the comment. Its 30w heavy duty. You can use 10w30 also.
How much does this edger cost new?
a lot, now probably 300-400
Why is my Blade get loose when I run the machine?
Is the hole in the blade the same size as the shaft? If so, try adding a split washer to keep it from backing off.
@@HomeGaragechannel thank you
@@jesusaguilar8923 no problem
What's the belt size for this..can't find anywhere
not sure, I didn't replace the belt, in this video.
@@HomeGaragechannel found out 32"x3/8 fits. Says in manual 31". But that was too short
is your rod that holds the arm, moving when you lower the arm?
@@HomeGaragechannel Ya. I think. I just bought it used
if that rod isn't "sliding" like it's supposed to, the belt will try to stretch, and eventually break.
I have another question for you do you know how to change the oil on it since it has 3 different oil plugs?
actually the square bolt at the bottom the block is the drain bolt. the other two are to accommodate multiple machines for clearance.
@@HomeGaragechannel So the bolt at the bottom of the block drains the oil does it matter which of the two yellow plugs you put oil into or do you need to put so much in each one?
@@ZTH184 they both go to the block and it doesn't matter which you add oil to.
@@HomeGaragechannel okay thankyou sorry to bug you
@@ZTH184 its not a problem
I have a Yard Machine, identical to this one. Can anybody out there tell me how I can get an owner's manual for this machine? or, can someone give me the model number of the machine?
do you have the model number or any numbers you can see on it?
@@HomeGaragechannel My mistake, it has a Briggs & Stratton engine. I will try to put together the model number, the tag was damaged. The end numbers I can see are 4382.
I was able to find the information I needed on my own.
Please help
