Thanks for watching. This Troybilt edger is really tough to start. Even when I use the the electric jump starter its takes over 10 seconds to start. I took the advice of some of the subscribers and adjusted the valve lash and that yielded little success. Time to look at the carb. Once again thanks for stopping by and please consider watching another video and commenting.
One pull? Seriously?👍 That's awesome. I now see how to disassemble and rebuild a carburetor. Will give it a try and report back when I have results.
good luck and thanks for the comment.
You have really stepped up your game brother! So complete and thorough from start to finish. I see 50,000 subs in your future. Very very good.
Thank you Dave I appreciate that greatly. If I can complete the task I'll finish the repair. These longer videos are quite the work.
Hey dave your echo arm 225 video was helpful
@@yoboi5775 Thanks buddy.
I knew you weren’t going to need a new carb! I have confidence in you!
thank you Bruce Coleman .
I love my little Troy Bilt edger. However, I can't get used to the short pull on the cord. I always feel like I am about to rip the cord clean out. I finally got me the drill attachment.
I think all these should come with the electric start. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Thank you for all the good videos keep up the good work guy you're very helpful
Thank you Luciano Raygoza for the comment I appreciate it
this troy bilt model has a thing called Jump Start you buy a Jump Start drill adapter and put it on your drill chuck,
after that you put it into the hole in the front of the engine and spin it over, you can start it way faster
Yes I have one. Makes life a whole lot easier
Nice. Carb is most likely my prob.. Used to start first pull almost. Never would have considered valve lash. Will jump on that. Thanks
Good luck!
So, to check and adjust the intake tappet, cycle the engine until the exhaust valve is all the way down. And vice versa. Unlock the adjuster, adjust and re-lock with the nut. Cycle again and check both clearances when done. And remember kids, the intake is larger and usually requires a larger clearance. If it has anything other than a rubber or cellulose gasket, you'll have to clean the cover mating surfaces and reseal with a cork gasket and/or RTV silicone. ^_^ And hey, nice job, but you forgot to wash the foam air filter. D:
Thank you 999thenewman for the comment. Great info and I washed the filter right after the video.
I have the Craftsman version of this. The pull rope doesn't feel like it's catching/engaging properly to where you can get a good pull on it.
Thanks for the comment. You need to get to the recoil pawls springs and check for damage. If they are ok spray some wd40 on the springs.
Spraying through all the orifices with carb cleaner followed by compressed air is a good idea when doing any carb.
Great point!
GOOD fix but I thought you'd have to go deeper but glad you didn't. BLESSINGS!
me too, but I don't mind if the fixes are easy .
@@HomeGaragechannel I'll 2nd this!
I would have cleaned the air filter before you put it back, great video
Ah yes that's a great point. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Good video. But I was thinking the same thing as I watched you put the air filter back in.
@@MichaelWilliams-ez7ws thank you for the comment I appreciate. Yes the filter is clean now its ready for spring.
Small four stroke engines will start easier in cold weather with 5w/30 oil in the crankcase. Regular oil changes keeps the internal parts cleaner
thank you Eric Chapman.
Great fix👍
Thank you Alan Marshall for the comment.
Awesome!!! Nice find!!
Thank you sir for the comment.
Too much valve lash causes a problem with hard starting on an electric started ride on mower as well.
I checked my grandfathers John Deere ride on mower today which runs a Briggs & Stratton engine, a battery place told him the battery tested o.k. so I checked the valve clearance only to find that the exhaust valve lash was set too tight,it wasn't enough to cause the engine to intermittently "lock up".
He had the battery on charge overnight & the voltage seemed good at 12.6 volts, but I tried starting it after 2 times & the starter motor had difficulty cranking the engine over.
I checked the voltage under no load & it was quickly sitting at 12.2 volts so I decided to check it under load, it tested between 6 & 7 volts so the battery is cactus.
He did have to jump start it with his car a few days ago so he can drive it up the hill before so he tried it again,it started.
He wants to get a second opinion at another battery place but I think he will need a new battery, my uncle gave it to him a few years ago & the battery is the original one that was fitted into the mower.
He gave it to my grandfather when it got harder to start !
Yes sometimes just getting a new battery is a good idea. Thanks for the comment.
Does it crank then stop if so i think your decompression on the cam is broken its common on briggs intek engines
I hope you see this, as this is an older video.I tend to dread the home owner 4 cycle engines, but i have noticed that especially with troy built, if they don't want to start right up and they have the jump start feature, By inserting the jump start bit in my drill and turning it for 20-30 seconds, and no it never start with the drill, But removing the bit setting the choke and pulling the recoil to start they start right up. Don't know why but it works more times than not. wonder why????
I'm not sure I have noticed that too.
It would've been nice if Troy-Bilt would have put a decal on the lower front of the air cleaner cover showing that there's a choke lever hidden underneath the air cleaner.
Yes you're right it would have been nice thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Great video. Where can I get an air filter for my 29cc craftsman edger. Not sure of the model number, but it looks just like the one on your Troy Built.

👌 good job
Thank you Tomas De Paz for the comment I appreciate it.
Good man
thanks
Put the part number and where you bought the diaphragm from please! Great video, I have the same edger with a very similar problem. Going to take it apart and see if I can get it running! Ugh!!! Lol
I don't put the part number because it may not be the exact one you need. Go to Ereplacementparts and put in the model number. It will give you the part number and you can buy it from them or use ebay or Amazon
Home Garage you have a good point! I am sure if someone made a mistake they would blame you!! I am sure The liability factor is tough when making these videos! I went out and took the bubble off. The diaphragm is good, no blockage , no cracks, no breakage! The only thing I can think of is maybe the lines have some micro cracks and is enough to allow air to enter the system! I have already soaked the diaphragm in break fluid even though it was still relatively playable. I am sure it is something so simple I am overlooking it! That is usually the case Isn’t it!! Lol thanks again for the video!
@@bret_Lambky if it looks good a replacement carb from Amazon is not very much. Replacing it is Definitely a last resort.
Home Garage thanks for the helpful advice! Technology is great when we can connect to collaborate! God bless! Have a great week!
@@bret_Lambky I will thank you
My air filter was wet when I remove the cover, I think I sprayed it with hose to wash it down after use. I went to start it and it turned over right away but now nothing
Check the gas and make sure no water got in the tank.
Why was there gas in the bubble while putting it back on the engine?
once fuel enters the primer bulb it stays there until you press the primer bulb. If you remove the bulb you'll see a check valve and that's why it works that way.
These edgers are fine, but I prefer the ones with bigger engines
The bigger ones definitely have a lot more power. this is used mainly for more frequent use, as I don't pull out the bigger edger but once or twice a year.
Question: how do you clean your hands after getting regular gasoline on them? I’ve hear old timers tell me household Amonia works, but smells worse than the gas. I also heard a few sprays of simple green does the trick too..suggestions ?
wow, I've gotten so use to the smell that I don't notice it, even hours later, but I'm sure the people around me have something to say. I'd probably use lava soap, because it doesn't smell like ammonia.
Think ya might wanna check for spark?
Its starts and runs just takes a lot of pulls to start. So it has spark.
Why do my fathers lawnmowers start up then if you shut them down to empty say the grass clippings then try to restart it will not start unless you wait a long time to I guess cool off.
Do the mowers have primer bulbs to help start them? What model mowers are they?
Where does one find the valve lash specs for small engines?
I usually use .005".
I have a tb 516 ec edger that doesn’t have any compression. What do do next?
Buy a new one.
How do you fix fuel line on craftsman’s 29cc lawn edger?
I need a model and serial number to be able to see what it looks like.
Enjoyed the video . I have the same engine on my weed eater and seemed hard to start even when new but i didnt even know it had a choke till i took the air cleaner out and noticed it i didnt see anything to indicate a choke that made it a lot easier to start
Than you hunter1953 for the comment. Yes the choke didn't help that much when it was tough to start.
Can you help me? I have a homelite 79cc and the only way it will start for only a few seconds if I put some fuel in the spark plug hole then it shuts off after a few seconds. What do you think is the next step for me? Thanks,
Rich
sure, replace the carb, fuel lines, and fuel filter.
Why is my blower very hard to start and I’ve replaced the carb
did you inspect the fuel Iines and fuel filter for damage or corrosion?
My edger starts but when you throttle up it chokes out the engine. How do I fix this problem?
Easiest way is to Replace the carb.
if it has air filter check its not clogged and starving the fuel air ratio.
What is the spark plug gap for the 4 psycho edger
not sure, if I had to guess, though probably .027"
when would you check compression?
This would have also been a good time to have checked the compression but this spark plug is the small type and I didn't have an adapter for it
@@HomeGaragechannel thanks bud, good to know.
@@BenState anytime
@@HomeGaragechannel On closer inspection turns out my edger is a POS Chinese brand that doesn't resemble your work in the slightest hahahha
@@BenState that's a shame. What brand is it?
My Edger starts but stops after it gets hot. What should I check? 4/28 1:57
sure, loosen the fuel cap and try it again
I replace my cooperator on my Troy bill TV516 edger and it still does not crank
did you check the valve lash clearance and also spark?
Great idea , design flaw
Most definitely
I have a Troy Bilt tbe515 and having trouble removing the carb. Is there an easier way to contact you to show you some pics?
I do apologize but I'd rather keep it non personal. However you can save the pics online either using google drive or drop box and post the links in the comments. I don’t have any compression
Remove the valve cover and make sure that the rocker arms are moving
The Rucker’s does move.
@@kaleiunea1202 then the rings are broken. Time for a new one.
That looks like a echo carburetor
Thank you Latrell Dixon. Yes this type carb can be found on other types of gas equipment.
Why has he got so few subscribers
I wish I knew the answer to that
My motor will start but when I hit the gas it will die
It sounds like a carb problem. I would suggest replacing it.
Found your problem, you don't know how to use a pull string starter.
