I have one similar to this and LOVE it. It provides a crisp clean edge and pulls out a slight dirt trench which makes the lawn look nice. Then you just use the blower to get the loose dirt out of the channel and back into the lawn. The blades don't last long even though they are hardened. When you are scraping concrete, nothing is going to last long. The blade on THAT machine wore out long ago and probably was not doing much of anything! 😀

I have a Yard Machines horizontal-shaft edger with B&S flathead. It error's great. I have a 100 foot lot with sidewalk across the front, plus a drive to the garage AND a circular drive. I would be there all day edging with a line trimmer! So, some people do need this type of trimmer. I might add that I've owned this trimmer since 1987!

I have several older McLane 3HP Briggs flathead edgers. I like the way the engine sounds. I love the look of a cleanly edged sidewalk and driveway. I have one similar to the one you show here also, I am rebuilding it for my daughters so that they don’t steal my favorite edger.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE at auction yesterday I bought a combo lot of 1 McLane edger, 1 old Homelite weedeater, and an old Homelite leaf blower. The homelite items look like they are old enough that they are from before the brand was cheapened. $15 all together. New toys!!

The Homelites made under Textron's ownership are pretty well built. The only issue with some of them are the Walbro HDC carbs that can be tough to service since many of the parts are no longer available.

I have one just like you have there. I love mine for my needs. I use it every time I mow. I live on a corner, with lots of edging to get done. My sidewalk touches the curb. So no curb hop needed. I only have about 6-8 feet of curved walkway. I flip edge that part. The big walk behind edgers have a few problems. One if you have to adjust the curb hop that sucks. Second if you have curved walkways and driveways ways. It really sucks to use it. I don't have those issues here except for the short bit of curve right up by the front porch. So for my needs it works great, but I can see why it wouldn't work well in a lot of yards. Especially if you have a grass easement between the walkways and the curb. I don't think any of the curb hop functions work nice and easy.

I have a 1989 Aircap 3-wheel edger, with a 3 HP Tecumseh horizontal engine. (Aircap was acquired by MTD a long time ago.) The blade on this one looks small, kind of like the 5" blade that originally came with mine I have replaced it with a 9" blade (Stens 375-139) with an edge on each end. The blades have a few different size center holes, and I had to drill out the Stens blade to fit my edger. Now, I get super-straight edges between the pavement and the grass, and so I use it a lot during the season. For someone who likes a straight edge, these are nice to have, and after you refurb and sell this for a reasonable profit, I think the buyer could be very satisfied. If it was mine, I would look for a larger & sharper blade, depending on how easy it is to adjust the effective length of the clutch cable (you might not be able to change things TOO much).

I prefer an edger over a string trimmer. An edger gives such a perfect clean line.
The one I have I bought used 25 years ago It's a little two horsepower Briggs & Stratton Flathead The engine date code says it's 1969. The edger frame is Montgomery wards (which is actually a McLane) I originally paid I believe $15 for it. Since then all 4 wheels have gotten replaced, obviously the fan belt once or twice in the blade a few times over the years... That edge are still starts in one or two pulls and I don't think I've ever adjusted the points on it

I inherited my Dad's 1984 Little Wonder with a 2.5 HP Briggs. The thing always starts on the first or second pull, with never cleaning the carb or worrying about preserved gas. It's bullet proof. It's a great machine, but as you said, they're redundant in most garages today with dedicated string trimmers or dual use devices most manufacturers offer. They're very cumbersome to use and with my device, not very safe as the blade guard is pretty small. Between sentimentality and just that it's a good edger I'll never part with it. I use it about every couple years to do the edges really well and just maintain the edges with the string trimmer weekly. I think time and ingenuity have passed them by.

Interesting. Yesterday, I picked up my first junkyard find. A Bolens edger with a 3.5 Briggs. I haven't dug into it yet, but looking at it, it's going to be a project.
I picked up this edger because I have a lot of driveway now. I have an edger attachment for my Echo PAS power head, but it still takes quite a while to do edging now. I spotted this at the dump, and decided to give it a try. If it can save me 15-20 minutes every time I edge, I'll keep it. Otherwise, I'll sell it... after I get it working.
Power edgers don't sell well, eh? Good to know. I won't put a lot of money into fixing this one. If I can't fix it for cheap, back to dump it will go. Although I might salvage a few parts off it.

I've got an old McLane edger with a flathead Briggs 3hp that I picked from the curb. It runs great and gives a nice clean edge but it's really cumbersome to use. I find that the edger attachment on my Stihl Kombi does just as good a job and is much easier to use since I use the same powerhead for trimming and hedging. I need to pass the old McLane on to someone who wants it.

Help! On this edger which way do you push the lever for the choke to be on? Or, is that just for engine speed? If I take the air cleaner off, I can't see the choke on the carb, so that doesn't help. Also, are you supposed to oil the foam air cleaner?
