Thanks Andrew. I think it would be really helpful to have an episode on "self experimentation". In most of the episodes I've heard so far, you emphasize various protocols we can try to improve various things in our lives. What is the most scientific way to assess if these protocols are making a difference in my life? Sometimes it is obvious, and sometimes it is not.
This is an incredibly under appreciated comment and I completely agree. Given that all of our bodies react differently to the plethora of protocols presented by Andrew, a solid base system to incorporate them into our lifestyle and what that trial” period would look like, would be great
It is the age old protocol known as "Trial and error". If you try it and it works, then keep doing it. If it doesn't work, then stop doing it and find another solution.
@@KTzu213 Sure, but what is a trial? How do you know something else did not cause the effect you're seeing? How much of a change do you have to see before you can ascribe a cause and effect relationship? I think trial and error is a good starting point, but it's a pretty deep rabbit hole. It has been alluded to a few times on this podcast - for example, in the interview with Matt Walker, Matt says if you're trying out a supplement, make sure you include a period of being off it to ensure that the effect you saw goes away. Like that, there are probably other things and I'm curious to hear Andrew's guidelines on how he experiments on himself.

Can you do a piece on coping with SSRI side effects? A subset of people have difficulty feeling a satisfying level of motivation/positive emotions/connectedness to others while on them, even though they help treat the worst of the anxiety/depression. Is there any way to increase/maximize positive emotions/feeling of connection while on these meds, aside from trying different ones/changing the dose? (I've felt this effect persist after I've stopped them, but I know that's not considered normal, and that I might be the odd one out in this case.)
For the person asking about ways to curb sugar cravings, I’ve found that Berberine has been an extremely effective supplement for me. I’m not sure that it’s one of the mechanisms by which Berberine helps to control glucose metabolism, but it has been a pleasant side effect for me. Prior to taking Berberine, I had THE WORST sweet tooth!
Question: usually when people have an inflammation problem and pain, they will take a painkiller like ibuprofen for example. But then I hear that the pain means my body is repairing itself. If I block the pain response out in my brain does that mean I am disturbing this repair process in my body? Is it better if I just deal with the pain and let my body repair itself?
Dr. Huberman, I know Yoga Nidra is good for deeper and shorter sleep, but what should one do if they want deeper and longer sleep. On normal basis, I have no problems with falling asleep at night. I have always been a light sleeper, there are times I know the second that some one took a soft step over my bedroom door's threshold, that's how aware I am of my surroundings while sleeping. I am trying to develop better sleep patterns for better hormones balance, build muscle mass and lose fat. I actually have no problem in staying asleep too, as long as I am not woken up by an external disturbance up to that 6 hour mark. My annual sleeping pattern used to be 6-7 hours (more so 6 hours) of sleep in the winter months and 4-5 hours during the summer months. But...this last summer I finally broke that summer pattern and got 6-7 hours per night by focusing on my electrolyte levels (supplementing potassium and Dimagnesium Malate). I still would like to reach a deeper sleep and extend it to as close to 8 hours. What should I try next? Should I try Theanine and Magnesium Threonate at night. Or am I being like a dog that is chasing after it's own tail and I am actually getting my body's sleep requirements? I go to bed at 10-11 pm every night. I have smart bulbs in my bedroom's lamps that change to red light at 8 pm and go off at 11 pm. They start to ramping back on at 6:30 am. I still wake up 30-60 mins before the lights starts ramping up. I have tried getting out into the rising sun every morning (30 mins at a time) for a 3-4 months (until mornings got too cold), but I didn't really noticed any difference in my sleep or daytime energy. I don't drink alcohol. I cut back major portion of my caffeine intake (sodas) and limit it to my pre-workout routine in the morning (200 mg supplement at 8 am for a workout at 9 am) 3 times per week with a rest day in between and weekends.

First of all would like to thank Andrew for all his content, very helpful. I would like to share my experience with supplementing magnesium threonate and theanine before sleep. I was A/B tssting usage and non-usage for a while and also tried different dosages and i found out that using those supplements before sleep makes me woke up around 3-4 AM, feeling fully aware and alert (after approx 4-5 hours of sleep) with having problem to fall into sleep again. Normally without usage i would wake up around 5-6 AM. It is interesting, not sure why - my hypothethis was that maybee the sleep quality is that higher that it is enough, yet now especislly during winter and longer nights it is not appreciated.
@@melissahamilton8238 previous day, make sure before bed you are calm and relaxed, no phone, no food, no light etc, but honestly just make sure you are good mentally, laugh and relax before bed.
I've been having an issue the past 6 months or so, with waking up during REM phase from a dream..a few hours before 6am (my normal waking time/alarm), the dream is usually so real or "emotional" that when I wake up from it my mind is racing, and I will lay there for the next hour or two finishing the dream on my own (consciously)....as if I didn't like how it ended or stopped in the middle of it, and I continue it on my own. I go to bed around 9-10pm regularly and usually have no trouble falling asleep. So it's not like I'm all over the place. It's like for some reason my brain is incapable of staying asleep during the REM phase, as well as incapable of going back to sleep when woken up from it. It's really starting to get annoying.
Hi Andrew and team.I’ve been missing my podcast fix recently but wondered if you could look into doing an episode on Haemochromatosis? I’d never heard of it until my wife was diagnosed with it following several investigations and visits to the doctor. Keep up the great work. It’s much valued and appreciated.
The whole point of science and health is to work simultaneously to promote longevity. As a person who takes really good care of himself, I just ask this simply out of curiosity; what about those people who drink, eat bad, smoke, etc. And live to be 95/100 and are still completely functional? Are they just genetic outliers? Is it the fact that they just don’t stress about it? It’s just paradoxical that we have all of these health recommendations and yet people who disobey them seem to have long and healthy lives. Sometimes I wonder if the healthy lifestyle is even that much more beneficial given that so many of the people I described exist lol. I appreciate your content so so much. Thank you for all you do.
Hi Andrew, I'd like you to address natural methods to avoid seizures-epilepsy (Nasal breathing - box breathing - stimulation of the vagus nerve). Thank you.
I typically fall asleep with in a few mins of hitting the bed. My Fitbit always tells me that I’m ‘awake’ for about 45 mins to 1 hour during the night. I don’t know it (I’m not talking about the time I know I struggle to sleep because my mind won’t calm down). So, 7 hours in the bed translates to ~6:15 min of ‘sleep.’ So, when Dr. Huberman says we need to get 6 hours of sleep, which number is he talking about? And how accurate is such a measurement?
Since this AMA I've been waking up at 4AM to work out for ~1:00h to 1:30h and then immediately mixing my morning coffee with some cream liqueur or scotch whisky and spark up a joint. Never slept better! ✌️😂🙏
Hey Andrew, Great episode. My question is somewhat related to this episode, though Id love your input on this. Every time I do Legs after not working on them for a long time, I tend to get Flu like symptoms the day or two after. Two days ago, I got a deep tissue massage-- I felt achy as hell the next day and even worse today with a 39.2 Fever Im sure theres a bugs going around, but I've had this happen before. It's so deterring and frustrating. I take my D3 drops and AG1 almost every day.
An interesting future study would be the effects of frequent exposure to Huberman [maybe averaging 10min/ day] and its effect on mood disorders, healthspan, lifespan etc. "Can a daily dose of Huberman treat mental disorders as effectively as current existing treatments?"
Good Morning/Evening Andrew, I love your stuff, i'm 21 and you've inspired me to start making my wellbeing a priority; the changes i have made through your influence have had a massive impact on my Physical, Mental and habitual health. Im from the UK so Living in a country with free healthcare is great however the waiting list i am on before seeing a dermatologist is a year plus long and i'm dying to know what i can do now from a source i trust such as yourself, i know a large amount of people personally with various skin conditions who have the same issues as i and would greatly, greatly appreciate your insight on the subject. Apologies in advance; i am going to post this in the comments sections all over your social media praying you will see this; so, please do not think negatively of me for the spam that is about to ensue. Very much appreciate you posting this for free. My Garmin Epix has been telling me I've been getting plenty of deep sleep (1:30-1:45), but The Quantified Scientist ran some tests showing it's highly inaccurate. He found the Apple watch to be far more accurate at detecting deep / REM, so I picked one up. Unfortunately, my Apple watch consistently tells me I'm only getting 40-50m of deep sleep a night, despite doing seemingly everything in this video. Even when I do all of these things, and supplement magnesium threonate, my apple watch still thinks I'm only getting 40-50m of deep sleep. Either my apple watch is not as accurate at TQS thinks, or there are other causes we don't yet understand (diet / inflammation? autoimmune issues?).
Cannabis use for people who exercise in the morning, have proper nutrition and eating schedules, don’t drink alcohol, don’t use caffeine in the afternoon/evening and consistently go to sleep at the same time and wake up on their own at a consistent time, might not have issues with deep wave or rem sleep or sleep quality in general…
Lead by example at your work place and people will realize how much more enegy you have than them and what not and will maybe ask you more about what you do

If I block the pain response out in my brain does that mean I am disturbing this repair process in my body? Is it better if I just deal with the pain and let my body repair itself?
Sir please tell us about self control
How to control our thought and make decisions with calm mind?
Thank you Adam for the important info man
Thank you! Super detailed and useful👏

Andrew Huberman blessing us again 🙏🏼
Premium channel as holiday gift for ME sounds like a good idea 🤔
Your right on the nail for current, very interesting knowledge.
An episode on nootropics would be incredible useful - piracetam, phenibut, Agmatine sulfate…etc
I wouldn't call phenibut a nootropic lol
Thank you for the work you do Dr. Huberman! Finally I found a Channel where I can both improve my english and also learn a lot of useful information.👏👏👏👏👏
what is your native language if you don't mind me asking? I'm currently learning Spanish so I'm not one of those stereotypical Americans who only speak english xD
@@mr_green33 I'm bilingual, my native languages are russian and moldovan. Also I have been living in Italy many years , so I speak italian too. Spanish Is great... Learning languages Is a good exercise for the brain, it will enrich you a lot! 💪
I love your work and contributions to the masses! Thank you for that! I'd like to see you collaborate with Ben the Kneesovertoesguy and have him on your podcast.
I believe they actually have collaborated! I know I saw a video of them working out together on a beach doing knees over toes stuff.
Listeners might benefit from a podcast on injury recovery and prevention. Thank you!
Seconded! and connective tissue health
So great topic. I would like to help this video to a Japanese version as well as other languages.
It's official! I love you! Yes! Absolutely!
Holy shit this is the most helpful podcast I've come across
Andrew love the content !!! Could you maybe look into doing a podcast about massage, reflexology, acupuncture, eastern medicine ect.
Why do I wake up anxious in the morning?
@@melissahamilton8238 previous day, make sure before bed you are calm and relaxed, no phone, no food, no light etc, but honestly just make sure you are good mentally, laugh and relax before bed.
Would you be able to do an episode on dyslexia please? Thank you 🙏
I've been having an issue the past 6 months or so, with waking up during REM phase from a dream..a few hours before 6am (my normal waking time/alarm), the dream is usually so real or "emotional" that when I wake up from it my mind is racing, and I will lay there for the next hour or two finishing the dream on my own (consciously)....as if I didn't like how it ended or stopped in the middle of it, and I continue it on my own.
@M Martin Not as far as I'm aware. What's the relevance of Irish descent?
Awesome as always
Thank you.
Thank you for continuing to disseminate useful information
holy lecture, dear Professor! thank you!
I LOVE Chamomile tea , never knew the active chemical in it , that makes you feel nice and relaxed and sleep well, in a HEALTHY way 🍜 😴🛌☺
looked for the downloadable pdf on the website and could not find it. Found the toolkit but no pdf. Will have to make my own pdf I guess?
New video on a thursday? WOOOOOOO
I would love to hear you talk about variées modality of somatic therapy.
Thanks!
An episode on how to remember things for longer time, training of brain to retain what we learn.
Thanks Andrew. All the best.
I typically fall asleep with in a few mins of hitting the bed. My Fitbit always tells me that I’m ‘awake’ for about 45 mins to 1 hour during the night. I don’t know it (I’m not talking about the time I know I struggle to sleep because my mind won’t calm down).
So, 7 hours in the bed translates to ~6:15 min of ‘sleep.’
So, when Dr. Huberman says we need to get 6 hours of sleep, which number is he talking about? And how accurate is such a measurement?
Thanks so much
So what I'm hearing here...is an endorsement for day drinking! 👍Just in time for the holidays!
Since this AMA I've been waking up at 4AM to work out for ~1:00h to 1:30h and then immediately mixing my morning coffee with some cream liqueur or scotch whisky and spark up a joint.
Never slept better! ✌️😂🙏
First thing i do is, press the like button.. thank you for everything
I would love to see a video about ASMR and the affects the brain and body
An interesting future study would be the effects of frequent exposure to Huberman [maybe averaging 10min/ day] and its effect on mood disorders, healthspan, lifespan etc.
"Can a daily dose of Huberman treat mental disorders as effectively as current existing treatments?"
How would one restrict alcohol to 12 hours before sleep? Stop drinking at 10 AM?
Good Morning/Evening Andrew,
I love your stuff, i'm 21 and you've inspired me to start making my wellbeing a priority; the changes i have made through your influence have had a massive impact on my Physical, Mental and habitual health. The only Kicker is that i suffer with Psoriasis and struggle to find comprehensive research on tackling this that doesn't conflict with other things i read, of course Psoriasis is an Auto-Immune disease so i found episode #44 & #62 indirectly related however not completely applicable.
Kindest of Regards Andrew, You're a great bloke.

Literary all my gym friends know more than this professor... i wish i was kidding
Such great info! I wish I could get more people to take the time to listen to this, but, I’ll just have to be content with applying it to myself.
Lead by example at your work place and people will realize how much more enegy you have than them and what not and will maybe ask you more about what you do
Can you do an episode on sleep disorders like Idiopathic Hypersomnia and Narcolepsy
