- With our big trip just a week ago, I've got a HUGE list of things to fix on my 1989 Toyota Pickup. In this video I rebuild the front solid axle, fix some wiring, re-seal the rear end, and more!

I appreciate the fact that you work on your own rig, I quit watching some youtubers that just take there stuff to a shop to install parts.
I appreciate that! I enjoy working on my truck as much as the wheeling. I feel you can also take more pride in your build if it's done by your own hands.
@@DirtGarage looks like you know your rig and know how to maintain it.
Admire the engineering with that axel.
Also the way you properly solder things. 😘
The trucks cool and all buuut that mullet though!!! Let’s take a moment to appreciate those luscious locks!
Thanks!
Ive been watching a huge amount of your videos the past few days. I want to point out that the production quality is absolutely TOP NOTCH. its extremely apparent to me the love you put into your editing on top of your trucks. the nostaligia i feel from back in the day working on my 86 toyota comes out when watching so keep it up man. I'm about sold on getting back into this
I'm never gonna complain about replacing my seals on my Dana Axle after watching you take apart that front end lol.
If your garage was made out of dirt it would be cooler in this heat 😎😎
Hope your trip goes well. I'm always excited to take out my 86. Just upgraded the ram assist cooler... getting ready to head out myself...you guys really need to make time to make out to the Rubicon....your rig is begging for it ....if your quiet you can hear it ask!!!
We will make it there at some point! Hard to make any plans right now haha
I learn so much watching your channel. I have an 88 Pickup and one of the hubs is difficult to engage/disengage. I believe a little tear down and lube is in order.
Wow man, this is really enjoyable to watch and listen to, 4 minutes in, and I'm diggin it while drinking a cold one after I was workin on my axle rebuild. Thanks, really enjoying the channel and my new project 83' long bed pickup. I also have a 1990 4x4 pickup. Thumbs up , subscribed. keep em comin! diggin it man!
I can almost smell the Red & Tacky through the video.
You should come to south Dakota. We've got really good rock crawling in the mountains
I'm jealous, can't wait to get my rig going! Great job
Getting it done. You should add rear disc conversion to that list. Those drums look past there expiration date lol. Keep up the killer videos man.
Maybe eventually. I used to have disks on rear, but had no e-brake.
Dirt Garage
Very true. It is a sacrifice. I saw a kit for it but it is pricey. I went through t.g. for my disc conversion and it was the poor man kit so no e brake lol.
Some of the shots could use better lighting to let us see but I'm really digging your editing lately. I love watching you work on something old and rusty like mine. Great content
Genius at work. Keep pressing on.
Thank you! Will do!
You worked through the heat wave?!
I almost died sweating in front of my fan last Monday. 😬
Awesome Channel 👍😎
This would have been a great time to install RCV's 😅 great video, looking forward to the upcoming trip 👍
If I could afford it I would!
I really wish you could’ve included more angles in the last part doing the 3rd member and more on the list but great video.
I see you have the starter on your list. What an absolute pain in the ass to access on the 1uz.
Good observation! I can see why he put it off!
Yeah it is not in a easy spot by any means. Not a terrible job, but not as easy as alot of other starters.
Nice build mate, I'm in AUS, I have a SAS swapped 03 Hilux dual cab, used a 97 solid axle from an ln106, do you rate your E locker?
Not sure what you mean by rate my elocker?
Never seen it so stinking hot in Cranny before...
If you ever need any spare parts come and get them I'm in New Zealand
How do you make quick detach lock out hubs? Just leave the c clip out?
We just get rid of the c clip for easy access, really it's got nowhere it can move.
so I bought a solid front axle HOUSING for my Toyota pickup, what exactly do I need to complete it to get it ready for a SAS!?
8" thirdmember with matching gear ratio to front, knuckles, spindles, birfields, hubs, locking hubs, FJ60 rotors, V6 calipers, high steer kit, knuckle sandwich / axle seal kit. Unfortunately just the housing is a small bit haha.
Ur look got me to believe in evolution
90s undertaker doppelganger. Or Isaac yankem (later becomes kane) doppelganger. U choose
👍
Is your front soild diff out of a Prado landcuriser looking at the electric locker high pinion?
Nope. 82 Pickup / Hilux, they did not come with elcokers. I retro fit the elocker in the front.
Video is here ruclips.net/video/HJODsK-S-IE/видео.html
Thanks I will enjoy that video when I get home tonight,
Mullet boyz
Where ya going?
Hi, I was wondering what front axle rebuild kit you used, or if you just bought all the parts you needed separately?
Depends on where you are from but if you are on the west coast of US Marlin Crawler is always a go to. They sell kits so you don't have to piece it all together.
Hi, I just used the one available at Low Range, It's the cheaper Trail Gear one. It's actually a pretty good deal, like $100 bucks! lowrangeoffroad.com/toyota/4runner-pickup-hilux-1979-1995/axles/toyota-knuckle-rebuild-kit.html
Where can I get a lunchbox locker or do I have to go through Amazon? I'm in the Kootenays.
We buy them from Amazon! amzn.to/3AdJHVI
@@DirtGarage Sorry to be a knob about this but how do I know which one to get or do I have to tear down my rear end first in order to make sure?
Also, I've posted questions on BC 4X4 and so far got nothing. I have another question about rims for my 89 Hilux. I put on Chev 16" spokers and I don't like the way the tires are inboard. I'd like a wider stance and possibly include some fender flares. Could you assist me on what rims I should try and get and where to get them? I had to grind a bit off my calipers and they've worked fine for years but I just don't like the narrowness of them overall especially when going to taller tires.
I'm in the Kootenays and sure wish there was a place I could drive to, show what I've got and ask a bunch of questions and maybe get more advice on things I should do to improve my ride.
If you completely went through a front axle on Toyota 4x4 and everything is good a year down the road
And then you wanted to regear
Would you replace Inner axle seals ,,there are no leaks now,,so my thinking is pull everything and do ring and pinion and just put it all back together
What’s your thoughts
I'd do inner axle seals. So easy to do while your are there. I'm surprised you got a year out of them though!
@@DirtGarage used the marlin seals and like I say ,,i haven’t done mud or anything really requiring the 4 wheel drive
@@DirtGarage what seals do you use,,marlin is out of stock
@@DirtGarage I see that grizzly makes a heavy duty seal now,,looks a lot like marlins eco seal
@@clayton203 I'm currently using a Yukon axle seal kit. Has a axle seal identical to marlins.
What's the difference between this front end and one from a 1981 toyota?
Nothing, this axle is from a 82!
He'll yeah nice hair haha
Thanks! Haha
You need some chromoly axels
Cool 😎
I learn something again
