  • It's not very often that I happen to meet up with the guys doing clean-up, mostly because finding out when they come can either involve alot of waiting round, or just forgetting about it. Luckily enough, with knowing that the guys come on the same day as the normal bins and after doing a little run around with the greens truck, I spent the next few hours waiting around for the darn truck to make an appearance. It wasn't until around 2pm that I spotted the truck making its way around the block, which I figured was picking up other unbeknown piles.
    After all this, seeing a Dennis 26m Olympus didn't fully satisfy me, despite it just coming and going, I was more so hoping to get the old International MkIII green JP5, which I've seen it recently on the job. You may well notice the other pile in the first clip which wasn't collected, dissappointingly enough, they swung back around about an hour later and threw it all in then, as it was initially going to be classified as a missed pick up and collected the next day, but were told to not worry and go back anyway. I was definitely looking forward to seeing some of that stuff being crushed.

    One thing I have noticed on the Australian market Dennis bodies is that the packer blade doesn't have the rubber safety screen on the edge like the UK ones do. You'd think it would be all the more necessary given the trucks are completely open back and they are crushing lots of crispy stuff that can explode...

    Great video mate. Bummer you couldn‘t catch the International JP5. I‘m honestly not a big fan of these Olympus rear loaders and this video again proves why. The sweep opening of the blade is far to small, this is already bad enough on regular garbage, but bulk waste is another step above, I can‘t wrap my head around why Suez would use a truck like this for bulk waste. The blade pushes most of the stuff out instead of compacting it, I bet the drivers absolutely loath this thing.

    • @ReubenFarrelly
      @ReubenFarrelly 3 года назад +1

      Yes the blade is too small, but the hopper is pretty large! It looks to be a pretty comfortable truck to ride in and drive though.

    • @laurin4339
      @laurin4339 3 года назад +4

      @@ReubenFarrelly I wouldn‘t say the hopper is very large, or maybe I‘m just a bit spoiled after working around Geesink most of the time :P I honestly hate the Olympus rear loader, my city had three of these and they where pretty much crap, the hopper area in general is just far too small combined with the small sweep opening. They are ok for regular garbage (which doesn‘t mean they are good, there are far better alternatives on the market like the Variopress or Urbin!) but they are definitely not usable for bulk collection. Also heard that in general, they pack not as good as a Urbin or Variopress for the matter of fact. As for the Dennis chassis, I don’t really know if the new Elites like this one are good but I heard mixed opinions about the older Elites, some drivers like them others loathe them, however, I’m still a Mercedes Econic fan if you want a low entry, otherwise Acco all the way :D

    • @dennisphoenix1
      @dennisphoenix1 3 года назад +2

      Yeah the blade isn't a patch on the phoenix 1 , that would swallow sofas with aplomb . The smaller blade gives better compaction on domestic waste that's why they switched to it . A geesink vulture is great for bulk

    • @dennisphoenix1
      @dennisphoenix1 3 года назад +1

      @@laurin4339 the hopper is 1.5 cubic metres. The issue is the low rave rail , a higher rail would stop stuff being pushed out but is harder to load heavy items . A drop down rave extension would be ideal

    Aha yes you filmed Campbelltown’s plain white Dennis Olympus. The with the glasses I’ve seen do bulk waste bins on RL747 before.

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo 3 года назад +6

    It's nice to get a better look at this truck, got a pretty big body on it, but wonder how much tonnage it can actually pack in. I noticed at that first job it was pretty full so it was hard to get a good look at the packer doing a proper cycle, but even at the end clip I was trying to figure out if that's the most the sweep blade opens up and if that's as high as the slide raises. Funny I worked on the general waste version of this rear loader doing clean-up in Parramatta which had the smaller sweep blade, and even with the larger blade and hopper on this truck it still doesn't seem fantastic for bulk waste... at least it looks like it crunches down into material well, with what I can tell anyway. Curious as to how SUEZ ended up with this truck in Campbelltown, wonder if there are any more of these 8x4 Olympus units in Australia.
