Exploring a 1920's Coal Power Plant in Philly - Richmond Generating Station
HTML-код

- This is Richmond Generating Station in Philadelphia, PA. You may have seen this abandoned coal power station in movies such as 12 Monkeys or Transformers 2. Its beautiful neoclassical design is something to truly behold. I don't recommend ever trying to go here as its an active area and is extremely hazardous. `

Thanks so much for this video. My dad was a boiler tender at Richmond for 25 years. Amazing to see the sheer size of this place.
No problem man and that's awesome! What a neat place to work
Does your father happen to know the pressure and temperature of the steam used at the Richmond generating station? Maybe the station heat rate or % thermal efficiency.
@@gregorymalchuk272 - Here’s some info. wikimapia.org/13296074/PECO-Richmond-Generating-Station-Building. As I read it, units 1&2 are 50 MW, 1925 vintage. Unit 3 was 135 MW, built in 1935, unrated to 165 MW with new boilers in late 40s. In 1951 they added #4 rated at 185 MW, 1200 psi.
Really neat, my Grandfather was a “Stationary fireman” in the 1920s in Runnemeade NJ. For a long time we thought it was a firefighter, but he actually fed coal boilers in New Jersey power plant.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow It's plain to see why "arch" is the root word of architecture while watching this. A uniquely stunning video. Dying for view counts would be dumb, though. It would be interesting if you could have someone who worked there narrate through the video as you ask them questions.

I've passed this place while boating on the river. I wouldn't do this myself, but its pretty cool to see the inside.
Ball of steel, Sir! A lot of the interior looked dangerously sketchy to me.... But when you climbed up the smoke stack ladder - I was like, Screw That!!! Man! Trusting 100 year old riveted, rusty steel at a height of hundreds of feet.... Wow! Just Wow!
Holy Smoke Stacks was my favourite part... You're nuts and I love it!
Chris, you have the most interesting content. And you are one brave person for bringing us this one. Don't ever stop but please be careful! We want you around for a long time! Really love your channel and content.
I started working for PECo in July of 1985 at Peach Bottom. I was unaware that Richmond had closed that year. It's surprising that they are allowed to leave it like this - that the state or city doesn't require them to restore it to green field. I laughed when you saw the Cardox test. Pretty much my entire career at PECO was in fire protection. I left PECo/Exelon in 2009. It was definitely not the same company. Times certainly have changed. Some things for the better, some things not...
Awesome video dude! I'm an EET - just caught it looking for videos on fixing up my little generator. It's a fun hobby fixing generators as looking at this its like model railroading in a way on a miniature scale so one person can see the whole process. There's no way they're getting that place running again without rebuilding it - maybe when we have a new form of energy though the site will serve?
"Is it really worth it? You tell me?" I like that. You only live once - and the most cruel way to die is not to live - just run out the clock and not do anything. To me everything is a calculated risk - if you trust it you might have to (as you may never get another chance) and you only get once chance to live. The beer bottles at the beginning are also a great theme to this video showing how much there is more to see out of life.
As a kid, I loved exploring old buildings like this. I'd like it even more when they'd have raves there and always wondered why they would fence it off. "If you're not using and don't care about it - why do you care if I look at it? Do you really got to go to such effort just to keep us from having fun?" Today I see why - I might die and then they'd get in trouble (not their fault for me going there)
This is the definition of brass balls Good exploration video of the past
Having been here 1000 times you’re fn nuts going solo
Most of my friends are not down with this kind of thing. One of my buddies likes coming sometimes, but I got to say the thrill of going alone is pretty intense. Really gets your senses sharp
I'm glad they saved this building
Yeah again... Underrated channel! Who else is doing this!??
Great fearless sense of adventure!
I wanna come on the next one !
Camera does it just.
Balls of steel... I've watched a few urbex channels before and always enjoyed the car content here. Some crazy heights and amazing views you shared with us all.
This beautiful building has been preserved, completely renovated and is now an office building. Nice landscaping and parking lot. Beautiful. So glad to see it reused.
I think you're thinking of either Chester or Delaware stations, this place is still sitting abandoned.
You can’t really tell the size of the turbines until you compare them to the staircase going to the bottom floor. Insane how much steel and concrete and engineering went into the building.
Ive been here multiple times and seen many other videos from here. This perspective mixed with everything you climbed really puts it in perspective how crazy big this is. absolutely a great video you put together! enjoyed every moment of it
A first I thought man this guy is insane and the more I watched I began to realize The Renaissance man is REALLY, REALLY insane......................another good one
awesome video! when you dropped that chunk of material from the roof into the water below, it really put into perspective how high that roof is.
Thanks! And yeah I agree. It didn't look that high on vidro until you saw how long it took for the piece to hit the water
I think that was a chunk of asbestos 👁
Wow that takes balls My man great content
That was sweet. Hope you have more of these exploration vids in the future
The proper people did a video on this exact plant a few years ago, good to see its beauty is being appreciated!
love these videos. I'm very interested in the old mills of Philadelphia. so this was right up my alley. thanks for exploring for us
Awesome to hear you liked it. I appreciate you dropping a comment as well!
You should go check it out sometime! if your local. Breathtaking even from the outside. Video doesn't do it justice
I'm not usually bothered by heights but watching this had me very tense!
And all that crumbly concrete and rusty walkways... I was scared it would give way at any moment. You have nerves of steel. Enjoyed the explore. Thanks.
Thanks man I appreciate you checking the video out. Glad to hear it got you on edge of little bit! :)
Wow just saw this for the first time. Man I do miss your exploring abandoned stuff videos lol
I did a nitrogen purge gas job job in that plant in 1995 shortly after the movie was produced. You are much too brave.
Wow Chris . This amazing. Thanks for showing us around mate , I loved it.
I would love to see more of the coaling building and the former office spaces. I know the grand hall was the goal but there's so much more to see.
I have hauled transformers out of Richmond station. I really enjoyed your video exploring this magnificent structure. You took it to whole new level sir. Climbing on the crane rail looked super sketchy. Thanks for doing a great job. Just imagine how nice it was when first built. Be careful on your next adventure!
That's awesome, sounds like a cool job. And glad to hear you enjoyed the video. Thanks for checking it out!
What an incredible view into our history. I love the engineering! Great video but stay safe!
That place is amazing. People think the steam age has ended, but we still produce electricity with it. Well done on the video you are a brave man.
Got my incredible fear of heights anxiety up. Great video!
That's good to hear! LOL. And thanks man
They are preparing to decommission Martin Drake power plant in colorado springs . But they will not let it just decay and rust away . It will be converted for a period of time to gas then disassembled and recycled
Just watching you traverse those heights made me nervous.
I used to explore some giant, old, closed down sugar mills in Hawaii, back about 10-12 years ago.
Crawled around everything, but I stayed off the high catwalks. Those parts are not for me.
They are torn down and gone now.
I’m glad I got to explore them when I did.
These old huge industrial complexes are so interesting to me.
this kind of videos can be way popular. Keep it up! Thanks for showing up that amazing place
- Haha... great video Chris! FYI @ 3:08 that section of the boiler is typically called the "penthouse" and that sloped floor your seeing is actually the roof of what is, the combustion firebox below and, is where the burners are located... Also, all of those offset tubes in the back are the leg extensions of super-heater element pendants that hang suspended inside the firebox below.
Thanks man and cool I appreciate the info!
great stuff! I read that they closed this down from operation in 1984.
I was gonna freak out if you walked around the top of that smoke stack! Great video sir!
You are a badass climbing that stack and your right people will always find a way in.
I’m kind of new to your channel and trying to catch up on older videos. This stuff is awesome, Chris!
Thanks for subscribing and checking out the videos Norm! Awesome to hear that you like them
You were making me nervous walking on those ledges. You’re nuts man. Pretty damn cool though
Awesome video. I just did some exploring in one of Edison’s old plants. Fascinating how these cavernous spaces and machinery were operated. I wish I could have seen it while it was live and experience the sounds. I do a lot of photography in abandoned places but it’s cool to see it in video. Nice job!
Amazing to think how much effort it took to build all that, now, totally useless. Also, pretty legit exploring the place as you did, not just boat rescues but no fear of heights either!
It makes you wonder what those workers are even doing there. Thanks for the video. This place is beautiful.
Well there are active utilities still surrounding the place so probably something with that. And no problem. Definitely a stunning place
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I know back in the nineties there was still active facility on site there was changing the 60 cycle to 25 cycle for the railroad
An amazing place to visit with your video. I hope that they restore some aspects of it...
Love this video awesome thanks for sharing Chris 👍
Glad you enjoyed it and appreciate you tuning in
All I can say is Wow! Fascinating but also scary.
Gave me vertigo, but I kept on watching anyway. Sure to see this in my dreams some night.
Damn. Crazy a video can do that. Hopefully no nightmares
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Man, I love these 'adventure' videos. No fears in my dreams, just strange and occasionally interesting situations. I'm thinking, are your productions capable of viewing through Virtual Reality devices?
Awesome, I'm glad you enjoy them. No I don't have any cameras capable of virtual reality at this point. Maybe in the future though. Good idea!
Cool old building! Thanks for the tour NNKH. Super sketch though😬
This was a cool episode, I was imagining the same thing, the view some employees had looking down for the control room. Now that I’ve seen this I’m going to see if there are any video of when the place was running. Some of the places you walked my palms were sweating for you though.
Nice video. This was one of my top 5 explores
Thanks man. And yeah it's a pretty spectacular Place. How long ago did you go?
2016
😅very interested thank you for you time and all your video’s .
I have seen this place before, but from an out of towers point of view.
It is a great opportunity get a view from your perspective.
I didn’t scroll through all of the comments but your one question about the net on the roof. It keeps birds and other flying animals out. Don’t want something nesting and/or disturbing something that could be catastrophic to the buildings integrity.
Outstanding job! I'm a Urbex newbie and this is way beyond my skill with having to climb to the roof to get in and active workers and everything - I'll stick to easy level stuff like Kings Park. Have you ever thought about going to North Brother Island? That's on my bucket list.
Thanks man. I've never heard of brother Island. I'll have to check it out. I've always heard about Kings Park but never went there
Vandals destroying everything, You just gotta love that!!!
I would of loved to seen that place back in the day when it was new it would of been cool to see it then and now
Wow crazy climbing and awesome video man!!
Thanks Dev. Glad you thought it was cool
This was my favoritest explore back in 2009. 💚
Definitely a great spot! I imagine it was much nicer back then
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Sweet baby jeebis on a gumdrop it was glorious af! There's a pretty cool plant in Hagerstown Maryland too😉
How do you walk around with nads so huge? This is one of your most captivating videos.
It's sad that the City Government has let it deteriorate to this condition. It could have been, or *could still be*, an Excellent Industrial Museum-Learning Center on Power Generation for children exploring Stationary Steam Engineering Careers. It really needs a roof to prevent further corrosion.
Even with a roof, it needs sealed windows and then also adequate HVAC, otherwise condensation and seasonal weather/humidity will still destroy it from the inside out.
@@furyfantoo Yes,, it does need internal controlled climate work but the City Council has failed to do what is right by trying to preserve this Historic Land Mark for future Generations. Perhaps their lack of interest is due to their personal Political Agendas ?
good to see such place ...but it is very dangerous trip ,,,thanks for it
Man, you sure go on some fun adventures!
10:17 actually, I was wondering about that, as I noticed earlier on.
12:19 yeah, that stuff seems light enough that it'd bounce right off your head from 100+feet, haha.
Nice music choices throughout.
Haha yeah, it was cold that day too, my hands were frozen after climbing the ladders.
and A big chunk of that ceiling might still knock you to the ground but you'd probably be okay. Sharp rusted wire rope inside of it might do a number though.
And thanks, appreciate the feedback
Great video, love this place
Well done!
I'll bet that bldg was absolutely beautiful in it's heyday. Proof of the term, "they don't make them like they used to".
Fantastic job man
Thanks dude
Chris, after watching all your nononsense vids, I'm floored that you took this kind of risk climbing. But yeah, it's cool stuff for sure. Was this pre Jen days?
Yeah I really enjoy doing this kind of thing but I don't video it as much anymore. And this is not pre-jen
Chris, you have some big balls!🥎🥎🏈🏐🏀🏉🏈⚽💬
Hey man, Great imagery!
Thanks Rory
that place is fantastic great video, take care,
It truly is! It's too bad they can't save it. From what I've read demolition is in its future. Thanks and appreciate you watching
Intro sounded like a discovery channel video. 🤣
I’m liking these abandoned explores. Old technology is interesting.
Yeah I tried to make the voice over sound okay but I didn't love the way it came out. I was actually going to cut it out all together but said screw it since I wasted so much time trying to make it sound okay. I'm definitely not an audio guy. I've learned that much
Went a few months back with my buddies. They’re tearing down a lot of stuff over there now
Was security around?
Yea
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow sneaky lol
Did you ever find out what the roof was made of, hopefully not asbestos?
Looked like asbestos he picked up
I thought the same thing.
Wow dude you’re a mad man!
Though utilitarian in purpose, the architecture is amazing, and most certainly must have been glorious in the past.
I thought you were going to do a will it run when you got inside
So Dope! We are totally into similar stuff. I love going to places I'm not supposed to go. :)
Awesome!
nice vid id love to check this place out myself someday
Thanks man. And yeah it's definitely a worthwhile place to visit
Cool is it still abandoned? Cuz the other power plant in philly is getting reconstructed or something so I thought I’d ask if this one is still abandoned
Yeah it's still abandoned. That's the one further south down the river that's getting reconstructed
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow really, I got them confused, is this plant hard to access ? Cuz it looks like it’s really heavily secured, I also always wanted to explore the other plant that is getting reconstructed such a shame that I’ll never get to do it,
Yeah it is definitely secured pretty good
Id like to have a place like this if i had enough recourses to get it back in shape enough to work in or have events in or like to make a multi level garage. I see alot of abandon warehouses and factories near where i live and would love to restore them and make them into functional spaces again
Other than not stabbing anyone with a pen or beating someone with a phone book, you're almost a real life Jason Bourne.
Incredible.
indeed!
thanks for the video I actually work here now it is 9/11/2022 I actually do security for this building because a lot of people breaking in just to take the copper I went in the building but didn’t get too far and it was night time so I really couldn’t see much seems like you were only on one side of the building this building is humongous and will take hours to explore love your video you have to be careful Touching and climbing keep up the good work
That's cool that you do security there. I would love to come explore it more with you if you're ever interested. You know do a thorough security sweep of the place. Shoot me an email if you're interested. Or I'm also on Instagram and Facebook under the same name
Can you even still get near it to explore? There's a huge bus lot around half of it now.
Wow!! that building was spectacular and i can only image in person it's even better . You have no fear of heights ...what does Jenn says about you doing these type of adventures?
YOUR MAD ! but in a good way 😂😂😂
Walking through the power ✅
Asbestos, asbestos, asbestos, PFAS, PCP’s, heavy metals, list goes on
Tetanus.
My fingers were tingling while you climbed that stack.
They want to keep peoples out so they don't fall to their death.
Haha crazy. And yea true. I don't blame them
I calculated 145’ when you dropped that chunk of Asbestos into the water..😂 cool video.
Haha nice, I was hoping somebody would do the calculations. I suppose it probably wasn't that accurate because I kind of tossed it. Thanks man
Not sure what it's made of but I don't think it's asbestos. I read up that they completely removed all asbestos from that plant many years ago.
You might be right. I would just be shocked if they had left it when they did the asbestos remediation
This video randomly popped up on my feed. I was about to type you sound just like the dude from nononsence when I realized it was you. hahahaha
its clear back then they took time to make the architecture esthetically pleasing even though it was industrial. those domed vaulted ceilings with arches etc etc. now it would be a giant ugly box of corrugated steel. even the greek revival exterior masonry is fantastic. they cared about what the community would see
Jeez it is funny how a RUclips video can get your heart racing just from the extreme heights. Scary 😱 😅
I expected to see a few cans of Ortliebs beer in the fridge.
Nice video. How big/long would you say that big inside area was? Looked like it was about two football fields long.
Thanks bud. I'm not sure honestly. I guess I would have to say a football field or maybe one and a half?
aint this gone now
I actually work in this building doing demolition. I would love to send you some update videos if your interested
That's cool. Are they taking it down completely? And you should post a video on RUclips about it. I'm sure people would love to see more on this and it's current state
Still doing demo ? Anything left ? Might stop by
How did you you get in there?
I showed in the video
Man, is there no end to your randomness? I'm surprised you didn't do a "Will it start" on this place.. lol
