If Sonic wasn't limited by writing issues
Personally, I think Sonic is “slow” in the games because that’s how the world looks to him. It’s why he can have the accurate reflexes he has, and why he can move so fast in cutscenes but we can never control him that way. We’re controlling Sonic, after all. If an outsider watched Sonic run through the levels he runs through, maybe it would only take a few seconds?
But that’s in-universe. Gameplay-wise, as you can see here: the speed not only breaks the game, but us humans don’t have the reflexes capable of controlling a game at this speed (unless trained very well, but Sonic is a franchise meant for all types of people). I do wish they could build the levels with a better sense of speed though. I’m not sure how to implement that myself, but it would be nice

That's why I've been pushing for different expressions of speed. Frontiers has an answer in the form of combat, or rather, how they approach Sonic's combat techniques. He can go so fast he creates cyclones, afterimages and more, but it shows that he also has to "turn on" the speed. That's why in my AU he has Infinite Acceleration rather than infinite speed. He's capable of being really fast and always remains the fastest in the universe but he has to reach that speed like everyone else.
If that’s the case (which is my headcanon too) then why does it look the same for other characters like tails, and why are badniks going normally?
I think unleashed pulled the “fast” thing really well. It’s not even that fast but it uses motion blur, animation and FOV to make it seem like breakneck speed

I refuse to believe Unleashed and Generations wasn’t TAS.

Once again, the difference is readily apparent between unleashed and all that came after.
The sheer amount of voice acting in normal gameplay (HYA, GO! WHOOO!) compared to the successors is staggering.
Also, the amount of times Sonic has bumped against the skybox while going that fast.
Compare that to Forces. STRAIGHT LINE SIMULATOR.

I think not having constant screaming is a win, you can hear the music better, and after some time hearing the exact same sound sample it gets weird.

I always imagined he liked to slow down in these games because otherwise he'd be blasting through everything instantly. Knowing Sonic, for him that wouldn't be fun.
The sad thing is that we can't even begin to imagine controlling sonic at his "real" speed like in the comics because we wouldn't be able to understand anything that is happening and so everyone underestimate sonic and think that his "real" speed is that.. I'm glad that sonic frontiers made sonic a little faster tho and the old games should be so hard to control with that speed lol great video
I am pretty sure the reason why Sonic doesn't really use his real speed in most Sonic games is because he is just trying to have fun. We see him trying to do tricks in certain stages all the time.

The way he goes fast in sa1 is a built in extra from the sonic adventure mod loader that you activate by enabling the super dash cheat in the 2nt tab of the mod manager

When it comes to video games and media sonic and the flash are exactly the same. They both WAAAAYYYY faster then what we see but its like they slow themselves down for our and their enjoyment because the reality is they can blitz just about anyone in half a milisecond or less, but then it wouldnt be interesting
