That's how Shadow was originally characterized. Unfortunately some time after Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, Sega's mandates basically turned him into Vegeta. So this is really just Shadow being written back to formula.

Although he came across as mysterious and isolated, he does care about and appreciates his friends, and despite everything, he still does have respect for Sonic and shows concern for his well-being, and fights to keep a promise he made to someone he cared about. From the 2010s, Shadow basically becomes an emo edge lord parody of himself. Not caring about anyone and just being a dark, brooding loner. Sonic Prime, for all its faults, has the best writing for Shadow in years, and has him go back to that mysterious hedgehog who has a deep rooted respect for Sonic, and also his distrust for Sonic at the start is actually justified. He even has moments of snark and sarcasm, which is appreciated.

I saw this video about Shadow having PTSD, and one of the things said in the video is that Shadow is reliving Maria's death every waking moment whenever he is near someone and/or whenever someone showing Shadow compassion. He basically has a hard time showing emotions because he fears that if he gets too close to someone, he'll lose that someone the same way he lost Maria.
I'm glad shadow didn't blindly attack sonic out of rage at the beginning, I thought they just reduced shadow's edginess for this show, but no, they full on improved him, he's matured, rational, smart, and as a result, even more badass than the guy we saw in sonic boom, sonic forces, and shadow the EDGEHOG.

Shadow displayed a lot of underlying (I think that’s the right word?) care for Sonic throughout the season, and it honestly makes me happy to see him being portrayed with a “soft around the edges” persona again :) I’m glad Sonic and Shadow would be returning as a duo once again.
I really love the sibling dynamic between Sonic and Shadow. Sonic the goofy overconfident younger brother who always finds himself biting off more than he can chew and getting in trouble. And then Shadow the protective older brother who is just trying to make sure he gets out of the situation alive and in one piece.
Oddly enough (at least in my headcanon of the Sonic lore) Shadow eventually becomes Sonic's brother-in law when the former marries the latter's sister Sonia.🤭 I know it's an odd idea of a pairing, but I can see it work like a more healthier version of Vegeta & Bulma.

Going from Boom Shadow to THIS was such a glow up. He isnt even in my top Sonic characters but he was so great in this show. I really love Prime and I wish the fandom was less harsh to it. It clearly does a lot of things right. Still very pleased with the season and show in general. The fact that we even got ROUGE and even BIG to come back in a Sonic show is amazing

I love this version of Shadow. He's more akin to Piccolo than Vegeta. He's not a particularly social hedgehog, no, but he's not actively angry. More, serious. He's no less heroic than Sonic, he's just not quite as talkative. Plus, Sonic IS his friend. He just won't admit it.

I honestly didn’t expect Shadow’s rationality to lead the way for Sonic to wise up and make the right decisions for once. You don’t often get an antihero that gives their rival the motivation to fix their problems. Sure, he tried to just bypass Sonic and do it on his own, but when that failed, he wasn’t going to sit around and do nothing while the world was being torn apart. He didn’t give up on Sonic, let him make the calls, and had his back the whole time, and that’s a testament to how he’s the best character in the series.

He acts like a complete mature hero that cares when his home is destroyed and want to fix it alongside with sonic, no matter what the problem this shadow will do whatever it takes to save the world. This honestly the best shadow written since 06, forces almost got it but it missed out on an opportunity to have him interact with team dark a little more. Maybe the movie could beat prime if they mainly focussed on shadow’s personality in adventure 2, Heroes, 06, Prime, A few bits in Episode shadow.
Shadow is one of the best things in prime. Voice acting is incredible and they got his character down well. The scenes with him and sonic are my favourite interactions in this series. I know people are probably sad they didn’t get a super shadow or whatever but k didn’t mind. Hope they adapt him well in the 3rd movie and do him well in general for the rest of the games. 💙🖤
It was brief but the moment Rouge told Shadow to wait he listens. Its a bummer that Shadow doesn't acknowledge his friendship with Rouge, which is like literally the closests one to being his best friend. She's also the only one he really listens too.
Prime did every character, ESPECIALLY Shadow, justice. It reminded me why I loved Shadow in the first place. I've been NEEDING for a good written/voiced Shadow for a long time, and they delivered. Shadow is grumpy, loyal, pessimistic but realistic/logical without coming off as annoying, caring, and funny without meaning to or breaking character. This was some good food 🤌🤌🤌.

I read somewhere that the writers know this, but that had they been faithful to his character power wise the show would've been over before it even started so they had to keep him down somehow which is why they had him stuck in the void for most of the show, it sucks but we got some Shadow content at least
@areafas It's because Shadow, in general, is actually kind of broken. He's basically chaos energy itself and is even immortal. But the games and TV shows nerfed him hard because he would've brought absolute hell in the Sonic Universe.

Something like it was in Sonic X (japanesse version). Also I had a feeling that Shadow was nerfed so he won't steal Sonic's spotlight since Sega's policy nowadays is that "Sonic should be the only significant character in the franchise".

I love this show and season 3 mainly because of Shadow, he got a lot of screen time in these seasons but I kind of wished there was a bit more of him in season 1 and even season 2. But honestly I love Shadow and his character, and I hope in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 there’s more of his character and backstory

I love how Shadow's an absolute powerhouse and everyone recognizes that in this show (well, maybe except Nine who needed to be educated about the Ultimate Lifeform). At the same time, I like how he carries a calm and rational yet serious attitude.
I dislike that Shadow gets so little screen time through out the seasons, but it works to his benefit in some ways. Cause it means they use well in shorter bursts. Instead of potentially letting him fall into being an uninteresting edgelord who squabbles with Sonic CONSTANTLY. It would have gotten old very quick. It also interesting that his character is such a 'do it myself' kind of character and he's forced in the frustrating position where he must be a passive observer alot of the time, only making his anger at Sonic for screwing up and stuff all the more infuriating. But it makes it all the more satisfying for the audience, and himself, when he can finally get involved again. Also his writing in general was good. His slightly more subtle writing than Sonics blatent quipping ismore interesting. Also I like how the show just casually says Shadow was fighting an endless hoard of discount Sonics for several episodes, in a canyon and still had the energy to keep fighting, not be badly injured, take on more, plus the alpha and smash his way into stopping Nine again and drop his catchphrase. Shadow has a different kind of 'can-do' spirit.

The animation studio is called Wildbrain, they also animated for Ninjago, and in the seasons you can see how the animation quality progressed to this

Going from Boom Shadow to THIS was such a glow up. He isnt even in my top Sonic characters but he was so great in this show. I really love Prime and I wish the fandom was less harsh to it. It clearly does a lot of things right. Still very pleased with the season and show in general. The fact that we even got ROUGE and even BIG to come back in a Sonic show is amazing

I love this version of Shadow. He's more akin to Piccolo than Vegeta. He's not a particularly social hedgehog, no, but he's not actively angry. More, serious. He's no less heroic than Sonic, he's just not quite as talkative. Plus, Sonic IS his friend. He just won't admit it.

I honestly didn’t expect Shadow’s rationality to lead the way for Sonic to wise up and make the right decisions for once. You don’t often get an antihero that gives their rival the motivation to fix their problems.
Sure, he tried to just bypass Sonic and do it on his own, but when that failed, he wasn’t going to sit around and do nothing while the world was being torn apart. He didn’t give up on Sonic, let him make the calls, and had his back the whole time, and that’s a testament to how he’s the best character in the series.

Not the biggest fan of season three but Shadow’s presence rlly shined throughout this season. Not to mention he plays a bigger role

He acts like a complete mature hero that cares when his home is destroyed and want to fix it alongside with sonic, no matter what the problem this shadow will do whatever it takes to save the world.
This is probably one of the best adaptation of shadow the hedgehog ever in my opinion.

Shadow is one of the best things in prime. Voice acting is incredible and they got his character down well. The scenes with him and sonic are my favourite interactions in this series. I know people are probably sad they didn’t get a super shadow or whatever but k didn’t mind. Hope they adapt him well in the 3rd movie and do him well in general for the rest of the games. 💙🖤

Prime did every character, ESPECIALLY Shadow, justice. It reminded me why I loved Shadow in the first place. I've been NEEDING for a good written/voiced Shadow for a long time, and they delivered. Shadow is grumpy, loyal, pessimistic but realistic/logical without coming off as annoying, caring, and funny without meaning to or breaking character. This was some good food 🤌🤌🤌.

I really thought there was going to be a moment where Shadow would take off his inhibitor rings and go nuts, so imagine my disappointment when the writers seemed to forget that's a thing he can do. And also that he's perfectly capable of navigating the void himself and didn't really need that ride
They did Shadow's personality right but totally nerfed him in this show. I too was disappointed with that. Why can't we have both Shadow's personality and powers right? Is that too much to ask?
I read somewhere that the writers know this, but that had they been faithful to his character power wise the show would've been over before it even started so they had to keep him down somehow which is why they had him stuck in the void for most of the show, it sucks but we got some Shadow content at least
@areafas It's because Shadow, in general, is actually kind of broken. He's basically chaos energy itself and is even immortal. But the games and TV shows nerfed him hard because he would've brought absolute hell in the Sonic Universe.

Something like it was in Sonic X (japanesse version). Also I had a feeling that Shadow was nerfed so he won't steal Sonic's spotlight since Sega's policy nowadays is that "Sonic should be the only significant character in the franchise".

I love how Shadow's an absolute powerhouse and everyone recognizes that in this show (well, maybe except Nine who needed to be educated about the Ultimate Lifeform). At the same time, I like how he carries a calm and rational yet serious attitude.
I dislike that Shadow gets so little screen time through out the seasons, but it works to his benefit in some ways. Cause it means they use well in shorter bursts. Instead of potentially letting him fall into being an uninteresting edgelord who squabbles with Sonic CONSTANTLY. It would have gotten old very quick. It also interesting that his character is such a 'do it myself' kind of character and he's forced in the frustrating position where he must be a passive observer alot of the time, only making his anger at Sonic for screwing up and stuff all the more infuriating. But it makes it all the more satisfying for the audience, and himself, when he can finally get involved again. Also his writing in general was good. His slightly more subtle writing than Sonics blatent quipping ismore interesting.
Also I like how the show just casually says Shadow was fighting an endless hoard of discount Sonics for several episodes, in a canyon and still had the energy to keep fighting, not be badly injured, take on more, plus the alpha and smash his way into stopping Nine again and drop his catchphrase. Shadow has a different kind of 'can-do' spirit.
