  • This is a leafcutter queen ant beginning a colony. Only about 2.5% of the queens who begin a colony end up with a viable colony of leafcutter ants.

    If yall thinking to grab that, your cooked due to how big it is means the bite is also big ( really painful ) but if you see a queen or This REALLY REALLY MEGA RARE ONE which the biggest queen ant on eath not including ant driver queen since its just long but they're really rare They are leafcutter ant

      Costa Rica has some really strict laws on catching, keeping or selling indigenous wildlife. Not sure on insects but I'd bet it covers those as well. I wish I could sell some because I see dozens every year...

      No, I left her alone. We see a lot of these year after year since there are so many leaf cutter ant colonies around our farm so she isn't really anything out of the ordinary. I also prefer to never interfere in the natural way of things.

      There is ant 2.5x bigger than that and this one is only 1.5 inches

      @adamkhordale whilst they are the biggest species in their genus (Atta) they aren't the biggest ants out there 😉

      @adamkhordale Dinomyrmex gigas are the biggest in terms of total size (mass), Dinoponera gigantea are also very big, but are longer and more slender, other honourable mentions, like you said, are Myrmecia (brevinoda being the biggest) and Paraponera clavata also.
