FINALLY someone gives the praises to Gold Key.
I stopped going after all Marvel and most DC comics and started collected strictly Atlas, Gold Key and off brand gold/silver books.
Battle of the Planets 1 - Gold Key... maybe my favorite gold key book? Anyway.. nice work :)
Love the examination of the census count! Do more of these.
I love JohnyQuest. The opening is the best
great content! The dells and gold key comics are so underrated. Loved seeing the census comparisons
I’ve been snapping up a fair number of Dells and Gold Keys in the past few years. I’m a big fan of the early Hanna-Barbera characters since those are the ones I watched as a child. I’m happy to have the Gold Key Jonny Quest and Space Ghost issues shown in your video.
I got Jonny Quest at flea market. I want a Space Ghost.
I picked up that Winnie-The-Pooh back in 1977. I was 7. Still have it too!
Thankyou Jim for this video: unlike many other RUclipsrs, you understand that the comics medium is much more than just Marvel and DC from the last two decades. Great overview of Dell and Gold Key/Western, and you chose some fantastic examples of these publishers' comics. Another aspect of Gold Key is that the titles often did not get into double digits, making it easy to collect entire series. GK also issued digest-size compilations of some titles (Boris Karloff I think may be one) which is a whole other area of GK collecting. I have a box of Dells which adapt my favourite movies of the 1950s and 1960s, I was lucky enough to find a dealer twenty years ago who let me buy his unwanted issues in ones and twos as my finances allowed for an excellent price; "Spartacus" is one one of these books. Love to see more videos like this Jim.
Great video, the first comic book I ever bought was star trek #1 in 1977 for the monumental sum of 15 dollars and I still have it, I consequently found out that there were more and decided I had to have them all. (Gold keys) Now here it is 47 years later and about 4000 comics later and I'm still not there, don't worry though I've gone to far to stop now, there turned out to be more than I ever dreamed what with the Whitman variants and the Canadian and English price variants and not to mention the Canadian pin-up back variants, don't get me wrong I wouldn't trade them for anything. I still collect and read them to this day, and at my local flea market the comic dealers called me the gold key guy. I could think of worse things to be called. Anyway let's see some more gold key content.
My favorite "Non-SuperHero" Key from my collection is Four Color #990. It's a "Mega Key" featuring 1st appearances of "Yogi Bear, BooBoo Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Pixie & Dixie and Mr. Jinks". CGC didn't bother to Notate any of these 1st appearances on the slab.
I got a copy of this book in a collection! It will be graded. I’ll have to see if the notes for CGC can be updated.
I love Charlton comics. They had some really good artists including my favorite, John Byrne, who got his start there. Maybe you could do a similar video about Charlton?
Hi Jim,
very good video.
It shows those Gold Key books in a total different light.
My grandpa has a bigish collection with about 1/3 gold key. I was sorting through it all, most of it was junk and then bam a decent looking Star Trek #1!
Good Morning Jim
Great video Jim, great content. Watched it out of order when I noticed what the content will be. Here in the land of Oz Space Ghost Green Hornet Jonny Quest Scooby Doo are the the holy grails. Endangered species indeed! Your Saturday morning TV was our Saturday morning TV . For a time the Flintstones aired at 7.00 pm, back in the day when there was only 4 channels and in Black and white. And I am not that ancient yet!
More great work please. Great DC Silver Age digging as well. You are the man.
The Gold Key Four Color Kid from Downunda
Outstanding video, and very timely for me. Last week I found a Dell Giant #48 (first Flintsones) at a local estate sale for $2. Thought that was a good score!
I'm purposely learning about these more obscure keys, and while everyone else competing for the Marvel keys, I'm scooping these lesser known books.
Interesting video!! I love those old silver age Legion books.
Great episode!
Own in this video: Addams Family, Scooby 1, Spaceghost 1, Jetsons 1, Dell Giant 48
Books for future episodes?: Astro Boy (have), Munsters 1 (have), Underdog 1, Pink Panther 1, Battle of the Planets
That doesn't even touch the PILE of Four Colors: First Alvin and the chipmunks (have), First Rocky and Bullwinkle (have), First Elmer Fudd own series (have), First Daffy own series (have), First Yogi Bear (have), First Road Runner (have), First Tweet/Sylvester, Peanuts (878), First Twilight zone
Jonny quest is on my shortlist of books I'm trying to find at a good price.
In the UK, there were 2 JQ hardcover annuals. One reprinted the one shot with several prose stories and the next year, the second annual had all prose stories with art. Then in the 70s, Australia reprinted it as well
Love these older books.
good topic, love gold key! dont forget about cracky!, the comic activity book for kids featuring of course cracky the gold key parrot, waaack!
Tom showed that in a RUclips short! Good for you bo!
Good Video. These books are starting to get their due 👍
Dell, Gold Key, Whitman - all in my wheelhouse I have longboxes of them
I have been chasing many of these cartoon related books. Just need the Jonny Quest and the Winnie.
that dell scooby doo #1 is something i've had my eye on for awhile.
Great video - would be interesting to see you do a similar one with a focus on Charlton.
Hi Jim, great comics, sorry I haven't commented lately, I was in a bad car accident, home now, broken bones are mending. Still an avid watcher
Sorry to hear that Lyle. Hope you’re better soon. Read some comics while you recuperate. All the best.
I have a raw copy of the Dr. Who 1st appearance. I love grabbing these more obscure books. Thanks for the video!
Gold Key and Dell are vastly underrated books. Can't say that I have any, but that kind of obscure stuff is what I love. I'm not a fan of slabbing as I believe comics are made to be read but I get the investment angle and why people do it.
I have 3 of the Scooby Doo comics in mid grade, 2 gold key and 1 Whitman. But I like reading a lot of tv and cartoon comics, thanks.
This was a trip down memory lane, I watched almost every one of those shows. Wide World of Disney was the best on Sunday nights!
Interesting to see comics that I wouldn’t normal run into
Those Gold Key books bring back so many Great memories !
I used to buy Gold Key books off the newsstand when I was a kid; sadly they're all gone. I do like Twilight Zone and Boris Karloff, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, etc.
Great video, nice work on the comparisons! In January 2021 I found a Scooby Doo 1 in a local antique store for $3, and despite the rough shape, I knew immediately this was a great find! It got a 3.0 from CGC, which I was very happy with. Then last June I bought a Star Trek 1 off ebay - it's a 4.0-5.0 - really happy with that. Another less known Gold Key I picked up is Boris Karloff Thriller 1 (1962), which became Boris Karloff's Tales of Mystery and ran for many years...
Great gold keys comics video. 😀👍
I certainly agree that those Hanna Barbera comics are very hard to find in high grade. I have a Scooby Doo #1 gold key and it's like a .5 to maybe a 1.0 if I'm lucky and I refuse to get rid of that book even in that grade.
Bravo, Jim! This video was right up my alley! I love, love, love obscure comics. Gold Key, Dell, & Charlton comics are the best places to find them. Unfortunately, the grades tend to be low but that doesn’t bother me much; as long as it has a cover and all the pages are present. Every now and again I do find a gem of a comic, for example; I picked up a Battle of the Planets from Gold Key that looked like it could have been a 9.8. My most obscure pick up, so far, is an Adlai Stevenson from Gold Key #612. I am kicking myself for bailing early on your last auction; looks like I missed out on that Gold Key Monkees. 😢 Oh well , I will be back next time looking for more comic gold. Great video!
Thank you for doing this. I knew most of these but not all. Flintstones and Winnie the Pooh I had no idea. Alas I only have one currently. The space ghost. I sold adams family years ago. I have been chasing Jonny Quest for years. No luck. Dr who also. The daleks how cool? And Star Trek 1??? Sold it years ago arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr oh well. Please if possible do more videos like this
Alright, who wants to know about Doctor Who? This will be a very short 14 hour dissertation on the TV series, movies, books, comics, and more. 🤣🤣 I've been hunting for a copy of that Dell Dr. Who, but I've not found it in the wild, and when I've come across it online it's been out of my price range. Same with that Star Trek book. I used to have some of the old Dell books, but they were all readers that I loved to death. The only Gold Key books I have now are a handful of Ripley's books and a couple of Boris Karloff books. Great video, Jim. I like seeing how these stack up to the more mainstream superhero books.
I have a copy of 1st Dr. Who that I would sell if you are interested...
great video
Gargoyles the movie from the 70's was based on a true story. Not far from me in Las Vegas is where the story was based and filmed
love seeing a video about gold key - thats what I collect. Interesting what you say about Jonny Quest - I have a few from Comics that were just great stories.
I have the two issues of the Andy Griffith Show. One is graded at a 7.0
Sounds like a fun collect. Those mid 60s TV show books are expensive as grade gets higher.
I owned 25 Adams Family, Green Acres, the Avengers Emma Peel, Man from Uncle, Beverly Hillbillies, and the Monkeys all of them were 10 issues of #1. I Dream of Jenniy
I found a Scooby Doo #1 at a flea market for $1 😮
Great video. I only have one of the books you spotlight, Dell Giant 48 - probably in a 7-8, nice copy for sure. Bought it for maybe $40 back around 2000. I grew up on a lot of those same shows but the Flintstones was the only one I really liked even at the time (always thought Scooby Doo in particular was stupid and can't for the life of me understand the popularity it has continued to have). I have maybe 2 dozen Flintstones comics - Dell/GK, several Charltons, and a couple of the Marvels. Most are mid-grade but I do have an absolutely flawless - I'm talking 9.8-worthy - Bigger & Boulder #1. Which is probably worth not much more than it would cost to get graded, still. Oh well. No plans to sell them anytime soon unless they really do take off in price. I used to have a Star Trek 1 (traded, back in the 90s, for I don't remember what) and a Dr. Who and the Daleks (sold a long time ago). Johnny Quest is the one I'd really like - I have the whole Comico series and loved it, and would like to catch the TV show someday.
Great topic, deserves a part 2. Will you do a Whitman video later?
Some of those high grade copies from the early 60s could've been warehouse finds in addition to file copies
I pick these up at estate sales when I see them cheap and have sold a few for decent money. I think the last one I sold was a Turok.
I am enjoying facsimile editions. They are much more affordable than the originals. I am reading one ongoing series called Antarctica.
I have a box of dell and gold key comics from 40’s, 50’s ,60’s that I recently inherited. I would say about a good sixty books are mid or higher. I have some Gene Autry, Roy Rodgers and Lone Ranger that look like high grade copies. Will know more once in my physical possession.
And Ditko art from Charlton!
Great video. With these books you can’t look at cgc for real information. Grading comics is a comic collector thing. A monster kid would drop 300 for that Addams Family book, and never think about cgc. A Hanna-barbera collector I doubt would slab there books. I have all those comics except the Scoody, and unless I was selling, I would never slab.
Gold keys, ya know I don't think 🤔 I have any... Damn I may have fallen into another comic book rabbit hole.
Space Family Robinson #1 is a great early Gold key from '62 that is classified as a "low distribution" comic. As a precursor to Lost in Space it has an interesting TV tie-in history and a low census count!
Gold key, Beatles "yellow submarine w/ poster 1968"

Space Ghost 1. I want a good presenting raw copy and everyone just wants to list top dollar slabs on ebay.
Hey Jim! I certainly remember Gold Key Comics, had a few myself, of course. Yeah, still not impressed with the ComicTom mail call. Just my personal opinion. I'm surprised to get a sense of the rarity of the Gold Key comics. I would have assumed that many of those were sitting around. Obviously I'm wrong there.
Best keys my wife will.ler me buy are bronze and copper
One can not use Deadman in a live action movie.🤣
Oh no i pretty sure i just passed on that scoobdoo comic last week for like 8 dollars ?
What is the value of a Tom and Jerry comic book?
Martha JEFFERSON? 🙃

Gold key comics starting ilate 2033 new project
Star Trek #1 is not hard to find at all. The entire Gold Key Star Trek series is easy to find.
