    When you were discussing the problems you had with the burn effect got me thinking on the inclusion of the seemingly useless 'Stand-by' phase in Yu-gi-oh which happens after draw and before MP1. You could include another check to apply the dmg using such a phase or flip the script and have both buffs and nerfs have a counter that is only applied whenever the coins use an action as opposed to being linked to turns. Could even go in between with some effects that affect coins subjectively based on if they take an action that turn with other effects that care not what the coin does and affect the coin regardless.

      Really interesting points! I actually had the same idea of the possibility of coins only taking burn damage when they execute an action. Something I will definitely consider in the future when balancing abilities.
