This is higher education art. I guess a good way of thinking about it is would you expect a mathematics major to know basic arithmetic through calculus before getting into a university program? Same thing with art. Even if you haven’t taken formal art classes, the hope is that you’ve honed your skill and passion on your own.
Well, for me it should be like that, I study in a design school and I always feel slowed down because everyone else still don’t know basic stuff, so I feel like I’m not showing my full potential
dude i was watching this thinking you were some big art youtuber because of how nice the video looked, but then i looked and saw that i followed you and you only have 26 subs?!?! what is this madness
I must say, your breakdown of an accepted portfolio is the best I've seen by far (I've watched about a dozen) and I think it is largely because you breakdown the why, the prompt, the concept, and the thought process rather than just showing us what you made. Many of us need the whole picture on this process not just the picture itself and you delivered that nicely and concisely. Well done.
I'm not even applying to any art schools (my major is computer science and I do art as a hobby) but I loved the editing in this video and while I can't really use any of the info to my benefit, it was really entertaining to watch!
I was kinda happy you accepted CalArts instead of RISD. It seems like they expected so much of applicants that when they do see the most amazing portfolio, all they do is look for the imperfections. It was cool to see that you chose a program that you wanted and was cheaper over something that is considered amazing mostly for its selectivity and prestige.
To clarify, CalArts and RISD both cost around the same w/o financial aid (;_;), and the character animation program at CalArts is equally prestigious and much more selective than RISD. However, my decision was not based on the school's selectivity. I wanted to go into animation, and I was fond of the community I found there. On another note, I think RISD's prestige is founded on the vibrant artistic community it nurtures; I would disagree that it's considered amazing mostly for its prestige.
@@lemoncholy Lol yeah sorry I actually thoguht this was the RISD+Brown program when I commented. (The ivy league was where I was referring to prestige). I guess I thought it was the Brown program because your portfolio was so amazing.
Wrong. They don't look for imperfections, they look for your ability to speak and express using art. One very common misconception about art is photorealism is good. They are rarely good unless you have a strong composition.
oh my god your portfolio is amaaazing!! im attending RISD this year and its a shame that i wont see u, but im sure youll do wonderful things at calarts *o*
Okay.. not only is the video well made but the quality of the art work is insane.. how are you only entering college? Props to you for being so talented/hardworking and well versed both in the arts and your video.
This is definitely one of the most useful portfolio videos I've seen. I love how you explained the reason and thought behind every single piece. It's also amazing to see how much passion you have for art. As just started to work on my own portfolio to apply for animation programs, it helped me a ton. Thank you!
you have time! make as much work as you can, working on technical skills but don't get hung up over it. try to express ideas and really hone in on your own creative voice; this will come from experimentation and looking at lots of other art.
Don't worry! I go there and when I was a senior my work 1st semester still wasn't up to par for risd, but I kept practicing and improved a lot by 2nd semester when it was time to submit. Though technical skill does matter, if you focus your portfolio on that you will not get in. You have to let the judges know you have a story to tell.
Ah! RISD is a literal 15 minute walk from my campus! I always see the RISD students walking around (there’s even a RISD building right in front of my campus) and I’ve always wondered what it took to get accepted. I would love to be friends with a RISD student bc my perception of them is so artsy and aesthetic. And I absolutely love art, it’s a shame that I stopped making it. I’ve been to the RISD museum a couple times and I absolutely love all the displayed art of the students as well as the art from various famous painters. Your art is so beautiful and it’s no wonder you got accepted!
I love hearing your through process behind each painting! It adds another layer on instead of just the "oh, pretty!" that most people associate with art.
this is definitely my favorite risd portfolio - and even art portfolio for that matter - ever! your work is so clean and crisp and i love your almost-commercial art style! i especially like your character 2d designs, which makes sense you're going into animation! i'm so excited to see where your art takes you, you're definitely gonna make it big!
what i love about this portfolio is that it's definetly a more simplistic, humble vibe. i love niche art, but seeing so many portfolios exclusively show of technical or detailed prowess kind of discouraged me because i like bigger pictures. so, this portfolio singlehandedly reminded me that art is more than just "being the best"- it's about telling a story.
This was the best art portfolio I've seen throughout RUclips, I'm so impressed and inspired. Your video has the best quality and I love how it was edited. Your portfolio was so versatile, I love the way you had a story behind your artwork, being fluent in both digital and traditional art, painting a still life perfectly while also being an amazing designer, I love your piece "If Love Please Return Home," and both of your response to the assignment is amazing, from the design to how it was carried out. I could never created 3D or physical crafts. You will go so far!
All the of the work was interesting and very well explained!! But oh my god, the plaster cast drawing/charcoal!?!? It was beautiful-it may have been a show of your technical skill, but as soon as I saw it, I gasped! It reminded me of Bernini and gosh the just angle of the face and the cast shadows!!! It tickles all my art fancies.
This is the best portfolio video I've seen on RUclips! Your artworks are amazing, but I also love that you guide the viewers through your works with the thought processes behind those works and your decision to include them in your portfolio in such a fine, concise way.
You only have two videos out so far but I’m in LOVE with your videos and art😂😂. Love the way you’re so articulate and give out pointers to people who are interested in submitting their portfolio in addition to how clean your camera shots are
As a RISD alum I'm sorry that RISD wasn't your pick (we'd be lucky to have you), but I'm happy that you got in multiple great art schools and you made your informative decision. 👏👏👏
Art school is like a hug and a slap. 🤣 I loved it but boy it was hard! Physically, mentally, emotionally. It’s amazing when you start to discover who you are as an artist and you go through many phases on your artistic journey ❤️
this is phenomenal thank you so much !!!! I'm bingewatching RISD portfolio vids right now for guidance on starting my slideroom thing; I really appreciate this !!!!!
Woah. This video is all sorts of visually pleasing. You’ve edited it SO WELL!! More importantly though, I’m such a huge fan of your art. I absolutely love your pieces, they’re all so beautiful!! Crazy to think you’re so young. Congratulations of getting into RISD and CalArts, good luck!
Thanks so much! I can’t tell you how many hours went into adjusting text, colour correcting, and changing other tiny, tedious things, so it makes me really happy that you enjoyed it ☺️
You're probably my biggest inspiration of an artist, so I'm very thankful for this type of video! I absolutely adore your artstyle and the way you portrait art, by explaining, analyzing or just appreciating it. Thank you once again and I wish you the very best!!!! 💗💗💗
I was extremely impressed by your art. You were so talented by the age of mine. I was totally surprised by your mixed media piece of art "if lost, return home". I had thought that there should be paper art or digital art only in portfolio. I am also dreaming to enroll CalArts and Sheridan Uni and I am preparing for it. Your video helps me a lot, you showed me how an accepted portfolio of my dream school looks like. Thanks you so much from Vietnam
Hi! Times have sure changed! I attended Art Center College of Design, & CalArts, in the 1970s, & I wasn't even aware of producing a portfolio. I just put whatever home & school artworks were around into a big, paper portfolio. I did not make pieces just for an applications portfolio. I see how different things are, & now in the computer era, even harder. You've done so well! 😊
This video is so helpful! I'm going into my junior year of high school and I'll be taking my first of two AP Art Portfolio classes and I'm beginning to think about what I want my portfolio to look like when I'm applying to colleges. This was so good at explaining portfolio setups and you gave some great tips! I need all the advice I can get or find so thank you!
This opened my eyes to a lot in terms of art in general, and just how much of art, down to the negative space is technical and should be used purposefully where possible. Its daunting, but pleasant to know I still have a ton to learn
Audrey the cat nerd don’t ever give up hope if art is what you’re passionate about. Firstly, if you’re worried about skill, just remember that you have all your free time to practice and get better before you actually apply. Experiment and learn new things. Second, RISD is what you would consider a “top” art school, and you don’t have to attend that school to become an artist. Set your sights lower and practice just as hard and you’ll end up in the same place after school. Lastly, you don’t even need an art school education to become an artist. Whether you’re freelancing or applying for jobs, your work is the most important thing. As long as you have good work, you’ll find good work.
If you really want to get into an art school, you'll need a strong mentality to do so. Though some things are definitely out of your control, you've got to control what you can. For some, it takes several tries to get into the school they want to, and the common denominator to their success is determination and hard work.
i feel the exact same way about school assignments omg!! the frustration i felt all year when one of our teachers would just give us “free theme and technique”
Art and GD use the rule of 3’s, to call it your own you need to significantly change at least 3 important aspects, styles etc to call it your own. Great video!
This is the one thing I envy from American school systems, you are able to focus on creativity, and you have like 4 different art classes to work in.... I had one drawing class in high school. That was it.
Yeah, that's something I definitely appreciate about North American school curriculums. I know how it feels though - I went to a program that was ill-suited for my interests and would not let me take higher-level art courses until admin had a change of heart, but at least and I had a choice whether I wanted to quit or stay. Out of curiosity, what is the cultural scene like where you are? And is a career in the arts respected?
on first viewing, this video discouraged me because of how good the artworks are, making me think I need to be this good to be acepted to an art university. But then, i discovered that RISD is currently the ranked number 4 highest art uni in the world, and i felt a lot better
I realized that I want to become a full-time artist even though i know it’s going to be hard to attract others to see how talented I am. I have a lot of support but there are certain people that do not agree with my decision. I want to own small business and make comic books, sell art ,and make merchandise for a living. I don’t know if college is for me though, I might go to a community college for a small associates degree, but some careers aren’t meant for a degree. Unless you want to work for a company I guess. But honestly, if your portfolio is hella great and “they” ( employer) see you have lots of potential in your art work. Whoever the business is, they’ll hire you before they’ll hire someone who went to school for 4 years studying art and made a decent portfolio. It doesn’t happen to everyone though, but it happens. I’m taking a gap year to get myself and portfolio together.
Thank you so much for this! I'm still in high school and to get a scholarship from my dream school I need to nail the entrance exam and the portfolio. I still have two more years before college so I'm researching as much as I can. Thank you so much for this video, just recently subbed. 😊
i really like this video and the portfolio especially the 3D work a tip to prospective students-don’t feel like you need to do a specific type of art i applied with 0 landscapes , still life, or figure drawings and i still got in. my advice is to embrace your own unique style but still make sure you have some variety in visual and conceptual approach ...you don’t necessarily need to check boxes of “types of art”
I’m an art student in the PH and I have no hate on my college whatsoever but this video and some other yt videos are really helpful than my classes. Also, my professors are always keen on letting us just watch YT videos instead of teaching us.
For the second piece you might benefit from digitally cropping it rectangular close to the edges of the actual people and giving it a black background, possibly with food shop signs or oriental patterns in the same colour yellow in the background too if it takes away too much
Thanks for the suggestion! I did consider making the background black, but I was too attached to the line quality of the edges to do so. I also considered adding more detail (more signs, textures, etc.) to fill up the white space but I feel as if my original composition is already too compact to make the additions look natural. It's more of a poster than a work of art - I'll just have to be more careful next time.
wow, the use of color in Sweet Dream is superb - love the hot pink & rose red combination! The only thing I would suggest is that the girl character looks like a cartoon character, making it somewhat 'Disney' looking (aka commercial). Good luck with your future artistic endeavor!
funny that you should mention disney - i'm pursuing animation now so most of my current works look "commercial". but, i'm working towards finding my own voice in design that diverges from more conventional, widespread styles. thanks for the feedback!
I'm on my process making and thinking about art portfolio to go to my dream school next year. I was getting tough thesedays but your explanation about your creative portfolios is very helpful for me! Especially your story inside your portfolio made me so impressed. Also, I've never known the aicad website!!!!! OMG it's a REALLY GOOD news for me. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and amazing information♥
Your portfolio is so unique and beautiful!😍 Im obsessed with that plaster cast drawing. Did you use a blending stump to make it so smooth? And what kind of paper did you use for the drawing?
this is undoubtedly the best portfolio video I’ve ever seen. is there any way we can have a look at the planning for “if lost, please return home”? perhaps a paid file or something like that?
With the second piece I would just change he background color to black or another color to allow the yellows to pop. Also start your portfolio with your second best so that when it's continued it seems as if you're moving up artistically and then also end strong.
Hello! all of your artworks are all very VERY AMAZING!!! I can't stop repeating the clip and watching them! you are a great artist and I am not surprised that CALART and RISD both accepting you!!! this may be a bit late but, congratulation in getting accepted into your top university! I also want to go to animation someday. So I have a few questions that I would like to ask if it's not too much (I hope): 1) Most of your artwork is amazing! Do most of your artwork in your portfolio comes from IGCSE or IB?(if you didn't take any of this following system then around which years/grade) 2)At which grade do you start collecting your arts for the portfolio? 3)Did you draw all of this artworks in the school class as a course or do you do some in your free time as well? 4)Did you art grade during middle school would affect the chance of getting accepted into the university? 5)at which grade did you start your CALART sketchbook? I hope you could answer my question! I have been following your art and I really admire you so much for your skill and your talent!!! I have a dream to go to CalArts, USC or RISD for 3 years now have I'm gonna start my IB soon this autumn. So I would like your advice! I hope you can answer my question and congratulations again on getting accepted!!!! (I didn't realize I write this long, I'm really REALLY sorry if it's hard to read for you.)
Hi! Thanks so much for the kind words! 1&3) I took IB SL Art in grade 11 and about 1/3 of my pieces came from the course (2 semesters long). Some art assignments can be quite limiting, and I definitely feel like the art you make on your own provides a better sense of your artistic abilities and identity. It's all about standing out. 2) I started collecting art for my portfolio during the second half of gr 11. I have a feeling this is pretty late - many people start around a year or more before the deadline. I definitely struggled with the timeline (lots of anxiety during the last month when I was trying to pump out as many pieces as possible), so I recommend starting earlier than I did. 4) When applying to art schools, the quality of your portfolio usually matters MUCH more than your grades (the extent to which grades matter vary per school: while RISD values good grades, academic scores are the last things CalArts checks). Universities certainly do not look at your middle school marks; what they see are your gr 11 marks, and gr 12 first semester marks. *Please note that I go to school in Canada so it might be slightly different where you live. 5) I started in the summer before my gr 12 year. I had 6 months, but it was barely enough time to finish 100 pages, especially given the workload from other IB courses and extracurriculars. Another note: The IB program at my school was very limiting because initially, SL/HL Art were not offered as course options. It took a lot of asking around, nagging admin, and luck. If it didn't run, I would have been forced to take a biology or physics course, and completing my portfolio on time would not have been possible. (If that scenario had played out, I would have dropped out). Good luck with your portfolios and IB! They're both challenging tasks, but with enough dedication and active efforts to improve, you're sure to do well
Its hard to stay motivated to keep on drawing and go to college so that you can make your passion your job, when family and people around you think it’s not a real job.
I'm sorry that you don't have the support you should have, especially when so much of your financing ability can depend on your family. It's gonna be a tough journey, that's for sure. There doesn't seem to be a good answer to the dilemma of following your passion at the expense of losing respect vs. being "responsible" and regretting your choices (not to mention that going into art requires a certain level of privilege). However, I do believe that once you're in the right community, you will find people who very much believe in the importance of art careers in society. Just remember that somewhere out there a small Canadian girl supports and legitimizes your goals.
that awkward moment when you already must have incredible art skills to study in an art school.

For some, it takes several tries to get into the school they want to, and the common denominator to their success is determination and hard work.
Goodbye art dreams, it was fun in a while haha
sameee ughh its kinda my fault cause i kept putting it off and i feel so behind now cause i still dont even know the basics
i feel the exact same way about school assignments omg!! the frustration i felt all year when one of our teachers would just give us “free theme and technique”
I’m so glad you got the subs you deserve now but I hope you get so many more in the future you’re incredible!!!
very cool. I liked hearing about your graphic design piece and the glitchy aspect. pretty and unique. I also liked your departure piece.
Thank you so much for the behind the scenes ending. I needed that assurance.
your portfolio is so good, every piece was amazing! :D
Your portfolio is absolutely stunning! Wish you the best luck from a freshman in SVA :)
Wow you are truly amazing,The art and the video are flawless
I really like your artworks!!
Your ideas are amazing!
Thanks for making video💕
The overall content is wholesome
(*´ω`*)
I went to Parsons back in the nineties. I think the competition for these schools is much harder now. I don't know if I could get in again if I tried.
Art and GD use the rule of 3’s, to call it your own you need to significantly change at least 3 important aspects, styles etc to call it your own. Great video!
This was so beautifully made, well done. You'll go places :)
Wow you’re art is truly amazing! I’m glad I’ve found you’re channel
immediately subscribed when i saw that QUALITY ♥️♥️😳
The editing? The content??? Absolutely *chef's kiss* amazing
this inspired me to take drawing seriously again. thank you! i look forward to seeing your channel grow!
woah, I'm happy for you!
Your art is simply breathtaking
Amazing work and quality video! Definitely subscribing and eagerly awaiting future videos! This whole video is just so peaceful and encouraging too 🥰
This is the one thing I envy from American school systems, you are able to focus on creativity, and you have like 4 different art classes to work in....
Your work is honestly so so inspiring, thank you so much for sharing your portfolio!!
i love your sweet dreams piece so much and i did felt what you’re trying to convey by the piece 🥺🧡
Incredible video! So high quality! Thank you so much!
on first viewing, this video discouraged me because of how good the artworks are, making me think I need to be this good to be acepted to an art university.
You deserve more subs and you just earned my sub. Make more videos when you can please!!! Your vids are so satisfying :(( the editing is on point!!
Some really fantastic works and a artist in the works ;) hope everything's going well at calarts!
celina, i can always count on you for a play on words ;) hope everything's going well on your side too
Thank you so much for this! I'm still in high school and to get a scholarship from my dream school I need to nail the entrance exam and the portfolio. I still have two more years before college so I'm researching as much as I can. Thank you so much for this video, just recently subbed. 😊
i really like this video and the portfolio especially the 3D work
a tip to prospective students-don’t feel like you need to do a specific type of art
i applied with 0 landscapes , still life, or figure drawings and i still got in. my advice is to embrace your own unique style but still make sure you have some variety in visual and conceptual approach ...you don’t necessarily need to check boxes of “types of art”
Need more vids from you! This was amazing!
that's a heartwarming thing to hear! i'm currently trying to balance art school and life, so i can't promise any videos soon but there will be videos
Look forward to seeing more videos from you!
woww the editing in this video is so so cool ahhhh
Ahh now I'm sad cuz you only have 2 films, I was so ready to binge watch :)
Your art is amazing-no doubt that you'll go very far w or w out risd
I’m an art student in the PH and I have no hate on my college whatsoever but this video and some other yt videos are really helpful than my classes.
Also, my professors are always keen on letting us just watch YT videos instead of teaching us.
*the editing on this is so good*
Your artwarks are so amazing!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and amazing information♥
first time seeing this kind of video style!! sO in AWE thats SO COOL!! u earned a sub!!
Very professional videos 👏👏👏 fabulous work..from England
Hello! all of your artworks are all very VERY AMAZING!!! I can't stop repeating the clip and watching them! you are a great artist and I am not surprised that CALART and RISD both accepting you!!! this may be a bit late but, congratulation in getting accepted into your top university! I also want to go to animation someday. So I have a few questions that I would like to ask if it's not too much (I hope):
1) Most of your artwork is amazing! Do most of your artwork in your portfolio comes from IGCSE or IB?(if you didn't take any of this following system then around which years/grade)
2)At which grade do you start collecting your arts for the portfolio?
They're both challenging tasks, but with enough dedication and active efforts to improve, you're sure to do well
WOW your work looks like they belong someone who has already graduated art school. Your talent is insane!!!
OMG thank you so much for sharing and expecting to see more ur incredible art work!!!
Thank you for sharing your process with us!
Thank u for sharing what they liked and didn’t like a lot of the other youtubers just show and explain
