Wow this was so beautiful, your art, your voice, your explanation! I really want to take a guo hua class now, do you mind sharing where you took yours? Thank you xx
Thank you for the kind words! I wish I had a better answer: my mom found my teacher via a connection on WeChat. He paints well, but doesn't like to advertise himself and speaks no English. Fortunately I always had someone with me who was fluent in the Shanghai dialect which made communication a little easier. There was a lot of history and philosophy he talked about that supplemented the art but I wasn't able to grasp the nuances because my Chinese wasn't good enough. Generally speaking, the best guo hua teachers are located in China, and the older they are, the better they are. The limitations you'll have to navigate are location/travel and ability to speak the language.
The amount of detail you put not only into your art but also video production is so refreshing. Sometimes it can be simple and comforting to see an overhead look of a desk, or a screen recording but putting so much effort into the visuals really helps make the video so much more engaging as well as crafting a story by putting us into the same environment you were in. Really looking forward to any and all content you produce and wish you the best of luck in school! Thank you so much for sharing with us :)
Thanks for the kind words! The idea behind it was to show process beyond what goes on the final page - wasn't sure how well this format was going to work so it's good to hear feedback like this. Hopefully I'll have time in the future to make more vids like this :)
I love hearing about the your experiences, observations, and what directly impacted each decision you made I in this art piece. It helps me to think more critically about my own creations. 💛💛
I grew up in Shanghai. I never really liked it much but after I left for college, I realised how much I got used to it. The moment I saw the title of this video while scrolling on your channel, I knew that I was going to shed some tears. I severely underestimated it. This video genuinely made me bawl my eyes out. I love your art style, the way you see the world and how you put things into words. You mentioned in the video that you weren’t completely satisfied with this piece. I don’t know much about art but I’m begging you to reconsider. The color palette reflects perfectly the old streets I used to wander around, in hazy summer afternoons, holding my fathers hand. Your talent for evoking emotions through art is absolutely incredible.
Wow... I love EVERYTHING about this. I’m serious. Love the concept for the video, and the fact that you shared your entire process. As a fellow artist, I really enjoyed hearing what was in your head while you made this piece- the sentiment truly contributes to the art. Love the amazing video transitions, other video effects and cinematography in all your shots. The starting sequence is so clever! Also like always, love your art. You genuinely have such a beautiful, dynamic style! I can only imagine how long this took, and how much effort you put into it. Thank you for sharing this w us (I also noticed and appreciate how you mentioned your brushes/ other resources in the description, thank you for that!)
i'm so happy that you noticed all these things - it makes me feel like the time i spent has paid off! sometimes it's nice to leave pieces up to interpretation but other times i do feel like it's a shame that we keep so much of our thoughts to ourselves - i'm the glad the format worked, and that there is interest for these kinds of things. thanks again for the lovely comment, it really made my day ^-^
I LOVE this. Every single time I go to a gallery and museum I actually spend so much time looking at the art and thinking “I need to know how they made this” I’m always so intrigued by what the process is like, so pls make more videos like this
This is such a beautifully edited video. The visuals alone are such a treat but the stories behind are more than worth while! Its always been one of my personal fav parts of social media/online sharing, that artists can share as little or as much as they choose about the creation process. Personally, in a world full of nonartists who (tend) to consume artwork at faster and faster speeds, I find its important to show just how much goes into even a thumbnail. And it really was a treat to see every detail that went into this painting. The themes of old versus new, or old coming together with new shines through and has me feeling inspired and ready to create. Really appreciate this! And cant wait to see what else you create!
I barely ever draw, never use pen if I do, and have absolutely no idea how to use watercolour. Yet, I felt compelled by your art to give it a go. So, over the course of an hour or two, I sketched out your drawing by eye, then went over it with a quill and ink, and then threw myself into watercolour. I just finished and I must thank you for this video - I let out a few therapeutic tears as I pushed myself to take risks with every stroke and accept every mistake I made. This was truly a beautiful moment of growth for me, so thank you again! I wish you happiness and success for the rest of your days!
You're now one of my inspirations being an artist ♡ such aesthetics and emotions, you're a true artist! And we have the same taste in graphic design! I'm glad I found you here! I have a resume and a portfolio to do now, so thank you for pushing me to do my best with all my heart.
I am in the middle of falling down the rabbit hole that is your channel. Your work is wonderful but as a westerner who did time at NYU Shanghai, the thoughts and focus on food here especially hooked me. Incredible stuff!
this was an absolute delight to watch. i loved hearing your story and your thought process while ideating and making the actual illustration. i was stuck on my creative process and hearing your reflections helped me break out of my block. it was human and refreshing. i feel connected
i am in love with your videos. they are so mesmerizing to watch and listen you talk, you have inspired me to continue pursuing art. please keep on making more videos, you deserve more recognition !!
I really enjoyed this! As someone who had the pleasure of visiting Shanghai last year you summed up the experience beautifully. I think your final painting really has that lived-in feeling that makes me feel quite nostalgic
My words! I love how you put your perspective in this video so much. It's like I'm traveling with you. I've never been to Shang Hai but now I do think about getting there someday! Also, your painting is beautiful. I love how loose yet captivated it is. Thanks for making this vid. I'm looking forward for the next one! Cheers!
Love and appreciate your work a lot! Would like to see more videos like that. Thank you for your explanations of cultures interweaving, and tiny details of what colours, lines, spaces, balance mean. Very calming and inspiring videos you make. It feels you understand the history and stories behind the pieces of art, that's much more valuable you can narrate and your knowledge in such a beautiful way.
I love this video, and your perspective was very sympathetic as I'm a Filipino American. I'm glad you got a chance to see a place with personal roots and I hope you continue to find ways to connect to them :)
this video is so beautiful. i loved your art process and the video journal of you in shanghai. i really do relate your comment on how no one really acknowledges the effort one artist puts into their work on instagram. i'm a writer/poet posting her pieces on the platform too, but i guess it's the same thing for artists like you :) i also loved how you incorporated chinese themes into your work as well. please do this more often! i'm totally subscribing!!
I've felt immense awe by watching your process and listening to your words. Such deep and insightful observation that made me feel I was in those places and in your art. I believe you were able to synthesize the progressive development and the "being" nearly forgotten yet important history. More importantly, I truly think you were able to inspire a lot of artists here. Thank you so much for this beautiful, super-detailed and effortful journal!
The quality in your videos is always mind-blowing- not just the art but the way you show of your process your video looks fabulous and I really really love your channel for it
I lived 5 years in Shanghai as a child and love your video. I lived in pu xi but always though that it was to American and pu dong was so lively so natural
woah!!!! you're video production and art in this is just awesome!!! the amount of thought that goes through everything!!! this was so inspiring to me :D
I think it's been years since I've commented anything, yet today i feel compelled to do so. The sheer effort you put into your work, is so refreshing. I wonder about artists processes a lot, and with the intro you gave i really think you conveyed your ideas really well. Its inspiring, you have my thanks as a fellow creator :)
Thank you for taking the time to write this - your words mean a lot. I spent months ruminating on my experiences and revising my script, and I'm glad that it had the impact that it did 💛
thank you so much for sharing this, your process was so thoughtful and really a gem to listen!!! The art is also amazing, you're still doing so great!!
Not only was your art impressive, your process interesting and your story interesting, your video was nicely paced, so i never felt lost. I have a feeling i'll be checking out the rest of your content tonight.
as monstrous the editing process might have been, I can only hope for more of it: i'm in love with the approach of story telling the painting process, enough to aim to steal it and make it my own (hope you don't mindd)
Just found your channel and am now going through and watching every one of your videos! I love the way you edit as well! As a fellow artist and illustrator, you have inspired me greatly and I have learned so much just from this one video. Thank you! Can't wait for your future videos! 🥰
Hi, this kind of video is really great! I agree with you that the process before a piece of art, the huge amount of work and study an artist does is super interesting and inspiring to watch. I watched the whole video with awe and I can't even draw ahaha but it's been great to watch your thought process! Keep up the good work! ps: you are an amazing artist ahaha I really like your work!! can't wait for the next one :)
I really love the style that you use for backgrounds, the textures, it's so mesmerizing to watch ¿From where did you got the inspiration or style to make them like that? I'm curious because I really loved it

How the hell are you SO underrated?!?!? You are the definition of high quality videos, it's a pity the algorithm doesn't tend to promote that.
frr I thought she had at least a million
Of course your work is nice but I like how you are smart and that your observations are interesting.
not me just realizing you have less than 1M-HOW YOU'RE SO GOOD

It is so enjoyable to see the thought you put into one art piece. This will honestly change my view on how I perceive art.
