ACCEPTED and REJECTED CalArts Sketchbook

I applied twice to CalArts, once in senior year of high school and again my freshmen year of college. I got accepted the second time but decided not to attend. I currently go to Savannah College of Art and Design.

between your first and second sketchbook it looks like your second has a lot more environments and more complex scenes with like multiple characters and stuff do you think that was something which was one of the reasons the first sketchbook wasnt accepted?

I had way more gesture drawings in my second book by far. I wanted to show my improvement in life drawing while having a good balance of personal-interest drawings. The people reviewing your sketchbook can estimate how long you spend on each drawing. So they can tell if you gold-brick on your life drawings or not. That’s why the gestures are so important. They show how fast you can capture a figure. Have a balance between life/observation drawings and a couple drawings to show your interests. Try and have more observation/gesture drawings than non-reference drawings

@@bethany.00 I used an alcohol based black ink brush pen and then a water based green brush pen. If you want specific materials: Pensk Fine Tip brush pen, and Kuretake mid green brush pen (water based)

Fantastic sketchbooks! May I ask why you decided not to go to calarts and stay at scad?

Going to one particular school won’t guarantee success, that’s a given. But after one year at SCAD I was well established in my major and realized the quality of education was fairly decent and the resources available to me were plenty. Also, there was a financial incentive. I have multiple scholarships from SCAD and CalArts gave me none. On top of that, CalArts would have me restart my four years of college education. CalArts is much more costly than SCAD. The area around SCAD, the City of Savannah, is very charming. The people as well. There were a couple social reasons I didn’t go to CalArts as well. For example I had made many friends through Bible Fellowship and club activities. I fear I wouldn’t have met them if I didn’t go to SCAD. These are all the things I considered when I heard I was accepted the second time.
