- The peace process between India and Pakistan has been at a standstill since 2008, after the Mumbai attacks. Despite several attempts, the two countries are unable to revive the peace process. The stalemate further deepened by the Modi government’s decision to revoke Articles 370 and 35-A of the Indian Constitution in 2019. In this talk, the author will trace the developments since 2008 and analyze the nature and scope of the stalemate. He will explain how the current stalemate is different from the past stalemates and discuss possible way forwards for the two countries. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Saeed Ahmed Rid is an Assistant Professor at National Institute of Pakistan Studies, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad. He has a PhD in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford and has done postdoctoral research as a Commonwealth Academic Scholar at the University of Oxford. He has received prestigious awards such as the Commonwealth Scholarship award and Rotary World Peace Fellowship. Dr. Rid has also collaborated on research with Indian scholar Sasmita Tripathy for their monograph, “Democracy as a conflict resolution model for terrorism: A case study of India and Pakistan” that won him the Mehbub-ul-Haq Research Award. Recently, he completed a postgraduate diploma in Federalism, Decentralization, and Conflict Resolution from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

1) Water issue - Rivers Coming From Kashmir Into India Will Become One Of The Reason Of Dispute.
2) 2 Nation theory - Perception of India Is A Hndu country. And H-M cannot Live Together. This narrative is still going to be carried by Pak.
3) Personal interest of groups - Certain groups (LeT, Hizbul) who has Kashmir as the sole reason of existence will find new reason of stay active.
4) Pak Army's Strategic Depth & Regional power agenda will get massive boost. They will have greater leverage against India.
5) China might become aggressive over India, perceiving India as weak Nation.
6) Pak's political instability will always impact the border. Where political parties might still try to divert public attention by creating border tension.
7) Nuclear tension will still be an aspect Of conflict.
8) Historical grievances - Grievances of partition in 1947 still going to haunt both the Nations.
9) Economic competition will still be an issue. Kashmir is a tourist destination bringing Foreign currency.
10) Since, India has huge Mooslem Population. Pak cannot isolate itself. It will always try to influence mooslem Population of India.
11) Rare earth material, Mineral deposits - Every new discovery will bring a sense of loss among India public.
India will take GB and POK by force. No wishful thinking by Pakistan.

This is not a stalemate. This is the correct type of relationship. By definition, these are two incompatible countries that should not have any trade or travel. The border should be permanently shut. It also looks well lit and beautiful from space. These countries have nothing in common.

There can not be peace between india and Pakistan . Pakistan can not survive without hatred and anti-india bashing. Even if Kashmir issue is resolved, a new issue will crop up between the two countries. Hostility towards india is a reality to justify two nation theory and survival of Pakistan.

The reason why India is presently in no mood to talk, is not that Pakistan appears to be self - destructing, but because in an unstable Pakistan who should it hold talks with.
I have asked myself if Kashmir is the cause of the India-Pak disputes or a symptom of a deeper malaise, like an unhealing sore reflecting a bigger health problem. Even if we resolve the Kashmir issue, would the relations improve; I think not. The deeper malaise is Pakistan's eternal hatred of Hindu (Pakistanis love calling it Baniya) India. The Pakistani elite has always weaponized religion to hold together the different provinces of the country. As we all know, this strategy had not worked in Bangladesh, nor does it seem to be working in the restive provinces of Balochistan, POK, and, of late, Sind. I have said a number of times that (1) make the LOC into an international border, (2) allow the free movement of the native Kashmiris across the border, and (3) Pakistan drop its eternal hostility towards India. Except for the minuscule and harmless Akhand Bharat crowd, the Indians are not interested in swallowing Pakistan. So, it can stop being a garrison state and divert its resources towards economic development. Pakistan has the required natural resources and a talented populace; it has to only change its mindset.
Why will India want to swallow Pakistan? Pakistan doesn't add any great human resource value to India. Capturing Pakistan will only be a liability.

I'm from Kashmir but we never asked or wanted to be part of Pakistan. The root cause of our issue is Pakistan if Pakistan didn't have invaded Kashmir in 1947 the maharaja didn't have to sign instruments of accession with India in rush without knowing the wish of the Kashmiri's ok as J & K became part of India it was acceded on terms of autonomy which India with the article 370 and 35 A which gives the states special identity which India scrapped on 5 August illegally here again without the wish of the people now in dispute of both nation Kashmiris are suffering nobody asked us what we want but we are bleeding since 70 years as UN resolution of referendum let the people decide their fate where they want to go or stay independent most probably people here want to stay independent as we are fed up because of this dispute or we can be remain part of India with autonomy like it was promised before with peaceful relation with Pakistan

But your claim that J&K wanted to be independent so that they won't be sufferer between the quarrels happening between both these nations - i think this point is far fetched thinking. I feel if J&K people takes such a stand (which they took at the time of independence to remain independent) - where Pakistan wanted J&K and has sent tribals leading to accession. There is a possibility of J&K suffering on similar lines as both countries could try such silly / stupid things - may be emotionally driven or whatever could be the reasons.
