I honestly will probably never find a video better than this. I love computers, learning about weapons, and distopian (possibly spelled wrong) topics. This really hit the spot and made my day, thanks Austin
Dude, I am blown away! This video had me on the edge of my seat in a way. I found it so intriguing and you presented your information beautifully. Excellent footage, editing and transitions! Well done sir. One of your best. P.S. So gameboys are still good then? :) aww yeah lol
Probably freak out, but after I started getting used to it, I would most likely spend alot more time with friends and family, I would be more worried about the power and such as you mentioned in the video than I would be about my personal entertainment though.
Cool and different (than usual) video, you can really tell that austin has a real love for these things, doesn't just do it for the views and that really comes across in this video, unlike other popular tech youtubers (lets bend every phone that comes out).
Fun Fact: Most of the major electronic devices around the world are inside Faraday cages in case something like this ever happens. Cars act as one of these and it's why they are safe to drive in thunderstorms. Power plants have them in those fences you see around them, subways have them in the main controls, cars have one in their body and frame, your computer has one (the tower), hospitals have them over all the vital equipment, and there are tons more. I'd appreciate it if you didn't go spouting end of the world garbage.
Did u just sat a computer tower works as a Faraday cage? That's about the most unintelligent statements as they come. Please don't anyone buy into this guys garbage
an0n0musx It kinda does and it kinda doesnt... If your case is touching the power supply then I believe so, but I think many things would still fry up.
Austin Evans You're definitely the best in tech and........ This really was a eye opener. I really didn't gave importance to my PC! But now I know how much it is to me besides gaming!
I actually really enjoyed this video. Even though I enjoy most of Austins videos, this one had a different feel to it. The way he explained the story, and the way he filmed the shots, made it seem like an actual documentary/movie/skit. I'd like to see more videos in this form factor if you could Austin. :)
Austin Evans Imagine having to evaluate the worth of each page by it´s contents and also keeping track of any fake pages anyone might try to sell you! Ugh ... i´ll stick to simple bottle caps thanks you very much. :P
Quick question. An emp would kill all electronics exposed to it. But after its "gone" wouldn't it be relatively easy to rebuild it and continue as usual?
HellaranzzOps You got it. I did this video under the assumption that all computers magically stopped working but assuming someone printed off schematics for most of the worlds electronics things could eventually be brought back to normal. Assuming everyone doesn't kill each other in the meantime which is probably more likely lol
Austin Evans Can't play CoD, you say? No console or PC, you say? That store down the street says differently... -The mind of some psychos. That joke was waaaaay more sad and sick than when I thought of it. I hope you like dark humour.
Well the thing is that all electronics exposed are dead. I mean dead. We would have to rebuild the whole production line for silicone factories, then start to produce them and use them. In pre-computer times it was quite easy as we used no computers in our lifes meaning all mining equipment was computer free. Yes it would be possible but not easy at all.
0:58 Pro tip, don't let the computer screen reflect off of your glasses if you're going to pretend that computers stop working. Great explanatory video, btw.
kons or maybe there will be no clothes?? you know factories can't make 'em anymore! so guys around the world just make sure you grab/burn all the girls clothes=Natural fucking porn:)
This is in no way the most viewed video on this channel, but you can feel the vast amount of thought put into making it, and the thought provoking it does. I think this is one of the best of your videos, and I'd love to see more like it.
I heard that if you build a massive metal cage around you electronics during an emp...the emp will just go around the cage instead of hitting the electronics...I don't know if this technique will work on solar flares
If any of you are interested in this type of stuff, there is a tv show called revolution on netflix. Its amazing. The show is based on power cutting off forever. Trust me its an awesome show.
Great video! A lot of people don't think about the depth that computers have taken over our lives. It's not like it's going to slow down either. Redundancy is the key to survival in a digital world. Shame to hear about your loss in the fire also. Subbed! #endoftheworld #computers #technology
Thing is though, an EMP or a Solar flare would knock out a LOT of electronics. But not even close to all of them, a grounded un powered computer inside a house, has a decent chance of not being burnt, same with cellphones. Military Hardened electronics are also more resistant to EMP. Though it would change us drastically we would be up and running like we are now in about 10 years. One EMP doesn't mean that EVERY electronic is going to be disabled, we will still be able to manufacture them and get back to speed pretty quick. I don't see a massive EMP doing much Permanent damage.
He is theoretically saying this, by now there's alternative effects, the thing is it is considered "lucky" now by scientists that such a thing hasn't happened.
Nawnp MCPE The Carrington Event was a very specific thing and it didn't happen for awhile after and for the last few decades we haven't seen any of the signs of it happening any time soon. My guess, 2020 or 2025 would be a likely time something similar will happen.
austin123457 actually i´ve seen a programm a few years ago and the last major solar flare was in 2003 it brought nothern lights as south as florida, not as strong as the carrighton event which made it all the way to the equador, but it as able to knock out an entire power plant somewere i american the place it seft i cant remember. they also say the next would be in 2013/2014 and they were right the aftermath of the 2013 flare is still present just of last week. they predicted back then that it would be the weekest in records and they were right as well.
backblaze just saved me today...my E drive partition failed. Remembered that I installed backblaze 2 weeks ago, turns out it has been backing up everything up until the partition failed! Thank you so much for making this video (and backblaze for sponsoring!)
Even with a large EMP the odds of all computers failing would be unlikely. Sure it could happen but really unlikely. The worst damage from an EMP results from the high currents traveling down power lines, telephone lines, and other large arrays of wire. If the device isn't connected to the grid and is far enough from ground zero it would most likely survive. While a server farm may got struck by a high current pulse from an EMP the worst result would be the need to replace the machines and the control boards on the drives. The drive platters would still likely have the information stored. Most data and communication is carried over fiber optical cable which will be perfectly fine even if you have to replace the transceivers on each end. The largest amount of damage would take place on the power grid where many transformers and substations would need to be repaired or replaced. I keep a few computers stored in metal ammo cans and they would work just fine since the ammo can would act as a Faraday cage. Many cars would also be fine as long as they are far enough from ground zero because the car's body and all the metal around computers and body controllers would protect the sensitive chips enough that they would most likely still function. You would have a lot of fuses to replace and some equipment may need to have traces on boards bypassed.
***** Sorry but it is highly unlikely that everything will be fried. Sure stuff near ground zero may be but the farther you get away the less likely the EMP field will be strong enough to do any damage. www.futurescience.com/emp/EMP-myths.html
Good video Austin. What I get most from this personally is how close we are to trying to minimise the workforce instead of maximizing it. The amount of stuff already mechanized and what's already possible to make mechanized, most jobs would simply revolve around the movement of money and servicing machines (which we'll hopefully start designing and build to last a long time instead of 1-2 years)..
I've uploaded videos that I've rendered at 60fps on a different channel and when I play it back they just run at like 24 or 30. I think youtube is lying.
Even farming is using technology. They need to have things like air conditioner, tractor, monitoring system etc which all contain a computer to be able to work if it went out, we can still survive but it will be near impossible to feed the entire world.

We could survive, just think about it. If everyone knew they were going to die, we already know what people did in the past without computers. Everyone would just have to cooperate

Absolutely loved the video, you can clearly see that a lot of effort were made in the making of the video. I hope you make more videos like this one in the future :P
Back on April 27, 2011 we had some major storms that knocked out the power for 2 weeks. And in those 2 weeks without power, computers, cell phones, even a refrigerator! People actually got outside and helped EVERYONE out. But in those 2 weeks I realized how much things can change in a matter of minutes. No more hot showers or air conditioning. It was rough for the first few days. Life without computers? Yeah, it would be different but we would quickly adjust and move on. Everything here is temporary and it could change in a instant.
Wow I loved this video. Really different from what you usually do and it felt like I was watching a vsauce video but with even better production values! I love your usual content but this was really well done.
Austin, you're a really smart guy, incorporating the message about your sponsor into a video. I kinda felt like it was one big ad, but still a great video nonetheless!
Great Video austin! It was really nice to watch and very interesting. Also it Shows that lots of things are powered or managed by Computers we don't think off.
Wow, Austin this video is rather different than your other videos. Great job trying something new. I wouldn't mind seeing more thoughtful topics such as this.
Hey Austin Evans, I'm a fairly new fan, lately been interested in your tech videos and the other tech communities members work as well. I watched some of your latest videos and reviews, but I haven't seen anything like this before. Do you do these types of theoretical videos often, based around tech or not? If not, you definitely should :D The whole theme, examples, options etc were explained in full detail and in a great style. Keep up with the great work! -Svanz
I have a bicycle and a 1975 Honda CL360 motorcycle which uses dual breaker-point ignition (no electronics) so I could at least still get around. I have a collection of flashlights and radios (many of which are solar or charged with a crank handle). I'm 42, so I actually remember the pre-internet days when you would go to the library and read actual books if you wanted to learn something and when cell phones were simple and only rich people or businesspeople had them. Mankind survived for thousands of years without electricity or running water, much less computers. Life wouldn't be easy but it wouldn't end.
Having no autopilot is barely a problem compared to everything that wouldn't work. No flight displays, no ATC, no ILS for landing and so on. Fly by wire aircraft couldn't even be controlled.
I honestly will probably never find a video better than this. I love computers, learning about weapons, and distopian (possibly spelled wrong) topics. This really hit the spot and made my day, thanks Austin

You notice that to lol. I Was thinking the same.
Would have been better if Austin used his own style.
yeah everything same type of music. pronouced everything the same. worded everything the same. everything THE SAME

I was reminded of the same!
Thought this was a Vsauce video for a second.

It was rough for the first few days. Life without computers? Yeah, it would be different but we would quickly adjust and move on. Everything here is temporary and it could change in a instant.
sounds like a Vsauce video :P
Please do more videos like this Austin!
No free porn ... Nooooo ..
Seal the Deal 😂😂😂
Wow I loved this video. Really different from what you usually do and it felt like I was watching a vsauce video but with even better production values! I love your usual content but this was really well done.
AC is man kinds greatest invention
VortexFX It's funny, it actually is. Air conditioning has allowed people to live comfortably in way more places than ever before.
Austin Evans and not freeze your butt off in the winter when you step into your car
At first I thought you meant Alternate Current (as in electric current) XD
I don't think there is just ONE "greatest invention." To me it more of a series of inventions that overall improved the living of mankind.
this is a seriously deep video.... makes me think of human existence....
did i watch a vsauce video? that similar style though
Your video's are getting better and better man! Keep up the fantastic work :)

This is a nice quality video and I mean that in a technological and content way. Good job Austin!
This was a really nice vid, very good scripting, totally unexpected. Thanks Austin!
This is VERY well done video. Props to you Austin, bet it took lots of work -- but this looks fantastic.
I love these kind of "What if" videos.

That was an amazing video dude! I love the way you chance the scenes all the time :) BIG thumps up!
Awesome video man! Very informative and original, I'm liking your recent stuff man keep it up!
Austin, you're a really smart guy, incorporating the message about your sponsor into a video. I kinda felt like it was one big ad, but still a great video nonetheless!
Loved the video Austin , probably the most creative video I've seen.
Wow, really enjoyed this one Austin!
Great Video austin! It was really nice to watch and very interesting. Also it Shows that lots of things are powered or managed by Computers we don't think off.
IMO this is austin's best vid by far
Wow, Austin this video is rather different than your other videos. Great job trying something new. I wouldn't mind seeing more thoughtful topics such as this.
A nice deviation from regular tech stuff! Nice one Austin!
Keep up with the great work!

i can totally see you continuing these types of videoss!!! veratasium FTW !!
Very impressed Austin, this was really well done!
Wow dude that was an awesome video! You did a great job producing it!
