As someone who grew up with Duke Nukem 3D I always wanted to play this version of the game, and it actually looks like it could be better than the later version we got... after it's finished.

I'm personally fine with the 2011 version of DNF(yes, i'm one of the few weird people who like it, and i don't think that it's as bad as some people make it out to be). But it's amazing to see people taking the leaked 2001 build and trying to make a finished game out of it. Hopefully, one day we will see a completed project.
It was not a bad game, but after 12 years it was never going to live up to the absolutely insane hype. I enjoyed it too. This 2001 project is a very nice bonus though.
It got ragged on more than it deserved... kinda. If the 2011 version had come out in like 2005 or 2006 I think most people would have been okay with it. The major flaws were the dumb decision to copy halo's two weapon system and the fact they didn't finish it and just quickly jumped to a repeat of the cycloid emperor battle. Its a shame really but the biggest lesson to learn is the "when its done" mentality is ultimately a stupid and unproductive way to make games.
DNF2011 would have been way better without the padding of the levels. it's not BAD .. but it's boring real fast because of how tedious some of the levels feel

I just wanna add that the levels that are in this demo, are the ones that are the most complete in the leak build. everything after these levels in the leak is very incomplete or wasent even started yet at that time

Excellent! Also, I really miss this old UT99 engine; it _still_ looks good, in that retro early-3D-acceleration aesthetic. I'd also bet this build, had it been properly completed, would've been better than the official DNF we ended up with.
Dam we getting a lot of good DN leaks this year. Duke Nukem Extinct Species got leaked and a video of 2009 version of DNF animation reel was recently posted. Hopefully we get the latest 2002 version next year.
This game feels like a bizarre blend of Half Life 1and Postal 2 and with the little I've played I love it leagues more than current Duke Nukem Forever. Sadly I couldn't play the Buffet level because my game literally broke and would crash a few seconds in and now it's just loading the unfinished level. I really do hope we eventually get a whole game out of this.
Absolute blast, and it's even harder than initial leak. I found myself dying to enemies on the rooftop level a lot. With Duke2011 I forgot how good shooting games can be, but this might make me remember. To note, all the shooting games nowadays suck, compared to Duke2001 In them, it's simply not pleasant to shoot.
Not sure if FR mentions it as I havent watched it yet but just in case an FYI: The team has been "caught" trying to remove "problematic" features and assets from the game, they have been caught and the teammembers that were trying to alter the original vision of the game have been removed from the team allegedly.
Let us hope it's true. Censoring a game like Duke Nukem will not turn out well for the group doing this massive project. I just have this doubt in me that the troublemakers aren't truly "gone", just tucked away for the time being.

Dig the music and Gianni's voice work, but found the gameplay and level design to be an extreme letdown. It seems the team is more concerned with adding their own stuff rather then fixing and polishing what is already in place. Hence the rooftop level plays great (snipers aside), because it was mostly untouched. Team's input is all over the place as it is now. Clearly there are some talented individuals engaged in the project, but as of now the focus is off.
I was messing around on Stratosphere and, thanks to the soothing sound of a mysterious voice i decided to try the new Rage sports drink, it is all natural after all ;)
Do Gearbox have a say anymore ? Technically Duke is now owned by Embracer group. In fact I have heard some conspiracies that the leak of this build was done by them to gauge the reception, which like I said is a conspiracy.
It's great to see this becoming a vid. I was really excited for forever and it just fell short. I have to say I enjoyed the game but I felt the game could have been better in a lot of different parts of it. This game took longer than Freddy vs Jason to come to the big screen and that's saying a lot. Great job with the vid 🤟🔥🎃🎄
Downloaded it and love it, but i think there is something wrong, cause Duke is still having that out-dated model and all the stuff that is said should be there literally isn't. No clue what the deal is, but there is no newer version available than 0.1.5 so i have the right file or not? Am i missing something? Super happy seeing this being worked on tho!
Just an FYI for anyone trying this out: I've noticed that whenever one tries to load a save, it'll just flat out crash the game without fail. I dunno if that was also a problem with the original leaked build, but it's worth mentioning.
It's a bummer they didn't try to expand on the Build engine for DNF2001 instead of using the Quake II engine. It's amazing the mods and full games (Selaco) that run on gzdoom, I'm sure a more modern Build could pull off all sorts of wizardry that could bring back the old spirit of the game.
I'm still hoping we'll eventually get our hands on a later build, maybe the one from when the game was """90% complete""". I'd feel a little bad for the team working on this awesome mod, since it would probably render most of their work pointless, but man that'd be glorious

There's plenty of Duke lines to be ripped from 3D, Time to Kill or Manhattan Project, and DNF 2011 since much of the story is still the same, some of the lines are the exact same in 2011 and 2001. If you need story-specific dialogue then use a new voice.
I'm feeling the exact opposite way. I'm happy that this is being taken almost entirely into the hands of the fans to be completed. A gift from fans for fans after Duke being sabotaged for years by corporations and george broussard

Replacing Duke's iconic voice doesn't seem authentic to me. DNF 2013 salvaged content from 2011 into a much better game than 2011 was. What they've made is still impressive so I don't want to complain too much, it's great to see Duke be kind of relevant again. We know gearbox would never do anything with the old builds and new-3DR is partly to blame for losing the IP to them. It's the fans who are keeping Duke alive at this point.
This had to be done. It's obvious they want this to be a complete experience by the time they're done with it, and you just can't achieve that by ripping voice lines from previous projects. You need a voice actor to record new lines for the story to make sense. Now, story is surely not the most important part of Duke Nukem, but for the experience to feel coherent, it needs to be there. Also, all of the games with Jon St John in them have different audio quality and sound mixing. The end result of using them all at once will sound wildly random and just plain off. So, while I do agree that Jon St John is the one and only Duke, for this project and its end goal, reusing old lines was simply not an option. And the new guy does a very good job in my book.

There's many connections to be made. The man and his son turned into the book signing, the lady waiting for the elevator turned into the lady stuck in the falling elevator. There's a lot of instances like that, probably why Randy Pitchford says "It's pretty much the same game", which is a huge exaggeration but I know what he means. The plot itself is completely different, though.
imho it was kinda unprofessional of you to not mention you were a voice in this mod. you weren't tellingly biased in favor of the project, i'd say, but as a fellow VA, i gotta tell you, it's only right to declare your involvement in a project if you're going to critique it

As someone who grew up with Duke Nukem 3D I always wanted to play this version of the game, and it actually looks like it could be better than the later version we got... after it's finished.

Randy Pitchford owns it and he is absolutely the last person you want owning Duke. Pray somebody who actually has testosterone in their system buys it from him because if he even did bother making a duke game it would be incredibly pozzed.
