  • This time of year you are probably thinking about hitting the woods for archery deer season or planning your hunts for the waterfowl migration, but now is a great time to think fish management. The work you do in the your pond now will directly effect the aquatic environment next year. This time of year you need to think about performing an alkalinity test, liming, and fertilizing your pond. The steps you take this fall can improve your fish quality and habitat next year. The lime and fertilizer do not work instantly, but over the winter and early spring months, the application will help correct deficiencies to improve your fish management practices. To really go the extra mile to help your fish this fall, now is a great time to begin a feeding program to help your fish through the winter months. These are just some of the basics to improve the fish management in your pond or lake, but they are important to growing and hopefully catching trophy bass.

    I have a 1.25 acre pond and it's currently stocked with Largemouth bass and black crappie. I am not sure how the crappie got in there, it used to be sunfish, bluegill and Largemouth bass. I used to catch 15-30 fish in a day all from 1/2 pound to 2 pounders. I heard crappie and bass ponds don't work well, what can I do to make my bass thrive again? Crappie fishing is fun but I am after bigger bass. Is there a way to make it work? Any tips for would be much appreciated. Also, my pond is in Canada anyway to make it work here?

    I have caught 4 bass that all have been 21"-22" long. Big heads, long skinny body. None of them weighted more than 6 pounds. I live in missouri. The lake was built in 1985.
    How old do you think the fish are?
    The lake is full of old trees and gets 30' deep in spots. Clear water down 4' most of the time.

    Last fall I got a shipment of 4000 copper nose Bluegill and 40 grass carp from southeastern pond . I am considering supplemental feeding but I understand the Carp will train to the feed and become much less effective on weed control. Your thoughts?

      That would be a good questions for the guys form Southeastern Pond. It definitely makes sense that would happen.

    How do you handle waterfowl eating the fish feed? We have a ton of ducks and geese and the lake association is worried about the waterfowl and the addtional waste associated with it from the feeding.

    Playing God... Youll end up with long big headed sardines! Bass especially largemouth need trout and Kokanee to grow almost a pound a year! Thats why Bullards bar in california has the biggest spotted bass in THE WORLD! No baitfish lake all kokanee those bass are eating. Largemouth would grow even faster. A body builder takes all the suppliments in the world but they have to have the good calories to make it all work!

    • @treyferguson9393
      @treyferguson9393 5 лет назад

      Yes trout and kokannee are higher in protein, and are better foarage, but are they natural to those lake or stocked??? That whole Cali area trout deal is not the norm in most of the u.s. plus it stays warmer longer there. Longer growing season. It's everyting combined

    If you are having a lake stocked with trophy size bass and bluegill, you need to keep your ass in your office and leave the fishing to the real fishermen.

      I live in Alabama. I can not sell bass to eat but i can get a permit to sell bass to other pond owners to stock their own ponds. How much do you think people would pay (per pound) for adult largemouth bass?
